“We Need A Showing Of All Hands”: Technological Utopianism In Make Magazine, Susan Currie Sivek Jan 2011

“We Need A Showing Of All Hands”: Technological Utopianism In Make Magazine, Susan Currie Sivek

Faculty Publications

Make magazine is a quarterly publication focused on do-it-yourself projects involving technology and innovation. The magazine also sponsors a biannual event, the Maker Faire, that brings “makers” together to share their knowledge. As a strategy for building audience loyalty and identification with the magazine, the Make products are skillfully crafted. However, they also invoke ideals such as environmentalism and nationalism in a potent mix that not only engages readers, but also represents an additional cultural demonstration of the phenomenon of technological utopianism.

Inward, Outward, Onward: Autoethnography Of A Dissertation In (Qualitative) Transitional Space, Genevieve Harris Jan 2011

Inward, Outward, Onward: Autoethnography Of A Dissertation In (Qualitative) Transitional Space, Genevieve Harris

Faculty Publications

This article presents the connection of a personal dissertation process to the wider world of qualitative research. Using the concept of transitional space as a metaphor, the author chronicles her theoretical transition from critical race theory to poststructural theory to emerging questions about material feminism. This transition is mapped to three major qualitative research moments within the field: modernist, crisis of representation, and the future. Autoethnography and found text are used to present the micro and macro telling of the dissertation process. White racial identity development among Christian teacher educators at a religious university was the original dissertation focus. Ethical …

Most people avoid doing qualitative research because they think it is not scientifically rigorous and requires time and lots of money. In fact, there is a lot one can do with little overhead that reaps immediate benefits for improving services and gaining unexpected valuable insights. This study uses a web redesign and assessment project to showcase some simple ways to get useful information from students.

Library web pages provide the main access point to many of the library’s services and resources, which also continue to change and accrue. Does the web site really serve students' research needs today? Where do …

Islamisation And Ethnic Identity Of The Chinese Minority In Malaysia, N.Y. Meng Jan 2011

Islamisation And Ethnic Identity Of The Chinese Minority In Malaysia, N.Y. Meng

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This study of Chinese minority set out to provide a profile of the Chinese community in Kelantan situated at the northern-east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Kelantan is significantly peculiar in the study of Chinese minority‟s response towards Islamisation policies for two reasons. First, the state has been under the strong grip of an Islamic opposition party, i.e. Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) for four consecutive electoral terms (1990, 1995, 1999 and 2004). Second, Muslims constitute 95% of the total population in Kelantan whilst the Chinese constitutes merely 4% of the state population (Census of Population, 2000). The 4% Chinese ethnic …

Mass Media And Mass Transit: A Newspaper’S Campaign On Public Transport Planning In Sydney, Rhonda Daniels, Cameron Gordon, Corinne Mulley Jan 2011

Mass Media And Mass Transit: A Newspaper’S Campaign On Public Transport Planning In Sydney, Rhonda Daniels, Cameron Gordon, Corinne Mulley

World Transit Research

The media has an important role in reporting transport news, but it can also engage in transport advocacy and shape transport policy and planning. In 2009, The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper launched an independent inquiry to develop a long term public transport plan for Sydney, with 500 page preliminary and final reports released in 2010 after community consultation including public meetings and submissions. Most members of the Inquiry team, transport professionals, donated their time to the Inquiry. The paper examines the campaign by The Sydney Morning Herald to develop a long term public transport plan for Sydney, independent of the …

Culture And Passionate Love, Elaine Hatfield, Richard L. Rapson Jan 2011

Culture And Passionate Love, Elaine Hatfield, Richard L. Rapson

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

For more than 4,000 years, poets and storytellers have sung of the delights and sufferings of love and lust. This chapter reviews what scholars from various disciplines have discovered about the nature of passionate love and sexual desire. Anthropologists and evolutionary psychologists have assumed that passionate love is a cultural universal. Cultural researchers, historians, and social psychologists have emphasized the stunning diversity in the way passionate love and sexual desire have been viewed and experienced. Culture, ethnicity and the rules passed down by political and religious authorities have a profound impact on the way people think about and act out …

Can Happiness Change? An Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Investigation Of The Dynamics Of Happiness, Franziska Deutsch, Mandy Boehnke, Ulrich Kühnen, Klaus Boehnke Jan 2011

Can Happiness Change? An Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Investigation Of The Dynamics Of Happiness, Franziska Deutsch, Mandy Boehnke, Ulrich Kühnen, Klaus Boehnke

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

None of the major basic questions social sciences are concerned with can satisfyingly be answered from the perspective of one discipline alone. Each of them proposes theories and perspectives that make unique and important contributions. At the same time theoretical perspectives in general inevitably do have their blind spots. This fundamental insight was the reason for us to choose as the motto for the 19th IACCP congress held in Bremen in 2008 “Crossing borders – (Cross-) Cultural Psychology as an Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Endeavor”. In this chapter we first want to illustrate this motto and our reasons for choosing it by …

Seeking Deliberation On The Unborn In International Law, S De Freitas, G Myburgh Jan 2011

Seeking Deliberation On The Unborn In International Law, S De Freitas, G Myburgh

Law Papers and Journal Articles

International human rights instruments and jurisprudence radiate an understanding of international law as also serving to protect fundamental rights and the interests of the individual. The idea that human rights provide a credible framework for constructing common norms among nations and across cultures is both powerful and attractive. If the protection of being human serves as the common denominator in human rights discussion, and if human rights are deeply inclusive, despite being culturally and historically diverse, then a failure to deliberate on the legal status and protection of the unborn may be seen as a failure to extend respect where …

It then discusses case law that addresses the aftermath of unauthorized organ or tissue harvesting. Part II evaluates the United States Supreme Court's evolving conceptions of the rights of individual and family-based privacy, autonomy, and liberty, for subsequent application to the presumed consent organ donation controversy. Part III analyzes presumed consent laws in light of the donors and their families' privacy, autonomy, and liberty interests. The Note concludes that current presumed …

From Sounds Bites To Sound Policy: Reclaiming The High Ground In Criminal Justice Policy-Making, Anthony C. Thompson Jan 2011

From Sounds Bites To Sound Policy: Reclaiming The High Ground In Criminal Justice Policy-Making, Anthony C. Thompson

Fordham Urban Law Journal

In this article, the author contemplates the way the criminal justice system is portrayed in the media and suggests how the media's emphasis on "sound bites" - which makes it difficult to separate fact from hype - has had significant policy ramifications. The author makes a point of exploring the many ways that conceptions of crime are formed and influenced, as well as how the media has shaped legislation. In the author's opinion, in order to curb the excessive influence of most mainstream representations of the criminal justice system, there must be some mechanism for oversight of both the media …

Watch Out Facebook And The Need To Evaluate, Horace Dawson Jan 2011

Watch Out Facebook And The Need To Evaluate, Horace Dawson

Theses & ETDs

Online social media have come to provide an important mode of communication and social interaction among peers, and have also recently proven to be significant forces in the global political scene. A social psychological construct measuring the tendency of individuals to form attitudes known as the need to evaluate is hypothesized to correlate positively with the intensity of individuals use of the social networking website known as Facebook. Information found in the sociological literature leading to this hypothesis includes the evaluative nature of social monitoring and Facebooks use as a tool to carry out this kind of monitoring and socioeconomic …

The Tennessee Valley Authority And Nuclear Power An Examination Of Organizational Failure, Michael Cowgill Jan 2011

The Tennessee Valley Authority And Nuclear Power An Examination Of Organizational Failure, Michael Cowgill

Theses & ETDs

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a government organization formed in 1933 with the passing of the TVA act as part of the New Deal. My project focused on TVAs production of electricity and the failure of the nuclear power program in 1985. Given past success I sought to explain how and why the nuclear power program failed. To do so, I utilized primary documents, acquired from the Atlanta National Archives that consisted of correspondence between the Freeman Board, congress, division heads within TVA, constituents, and industry actors. Theoretical frameworks utilized in my analysis included Weberian, Neo-Weberian, and Neo-Institutionalist organizational …

"Smarten Up And Act Dumb, Sister!" Representations Of Sexuality And Gender In Children's Television Media, Zoe Nicole Kenney Jan 2011

"Smarten Up And Act Dumb, Sister!" Representations Of Sexuality And Gender In Children's Television Media, Zoe Nicole Kenney

Theses & ETDs

Media products created primarily for children must meet standards of acceptability that preclude sexual content. However, previous research indicates that representations of sexuality are present in childrens media. I examine this paradox through a content analysis of children's live-action television shows, with attention to the highly normative nature of the sexuality that is present. My sample includes 21 episodes from The Suite Life on Deck, the most popular show among 9-14 year olds on The Disney Channel as of Spring 2011. My data reflects the frequent heteronormativity and strictly delineated gender roles found in the content of such television programming. …
