Societal Expectations And The Profession's Responsibility To Reform The Dental Workforce To Ensure Access To Care For Children, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Societal expectations raise the issue of the nature of a profession and a profession's relationship with society. Influential policy leaders want reform of the oral health workforce and delivery system in such a manner as to ensure that improvements are made for accessing care, particularly for vulnerable and disadvantaged populations, especially children. This essay is based on a presentation to the House of Delegates of the California Dental Association on Nov.13, 2009.

Nursing Students’ Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness: Do They Change After Instruction And Clinical Exposure?, Rachel Morrison Jul 2011

Nursing Students’ Attitudes Toward People With Mental Illness: Do They Change After Instruction And Clinical Exposure?, Rachel Morrison

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

People with mental illness are among the most stigmatized groups of patients in the healthcare setting (Putnam, 2008). Nurses comprise roughly 15.3 percent of the healthcare team (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010) and have frequent direct interactions with patients. As one of the larger groups of healthcare providers, nurses can potentially influence this stigma, either by contributing to the prevalent negative attitudes, or by confronting expressions of stigma. A requirement for licensure is to take a course in Mental Health. One of the goals of this course is to decrease stigma toward people with mental illness (American Association of …

Learning About Social Capital In A Nonprofit And Philanthropy Management Class, Alexander Livshin Jul 2011

Learning About Social Capital In A Nonprofit And Philanthropy Management Class, Alexander Livshin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The SOTL project was based on the goal of developing learning tools that would help students think and act outside the narrow circles of relatives and friends and develop the potential for broader associations through participating in nonprofit organizations and philanthropy. This was done by having students work in groups to invent a charitable organization based on specific local needs during the course, and by having them reflect on the learning gained through the project work. By the end of the term, as indicated by the group projects, reflective essays and two surveys, the vast majority of the students have …

Internationalization Of A Faculty Sotl Program: Immersion Experiences Of Beijing Professors In A Canadian Research-Intensive University, Baohua Wang, Junfang Peng, Marion L. Pearson, Harry Hubball

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This essay describes an international exchange program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) for a cohort of faculty from the Bilingual Training Program (BTP) of the Beijing Teachers Training Center for Higher Education (BTTCHE). The Beijing professors’ cohort participated in an adapted version of UBC’s Faculty Certificate Program on Teaching and Learning (FCP), which provided them with an immersion experience designed to improve their English language skills and to enhance their understanding of key concepts pertaining to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) within and across disciplinary contexts. Critical reflections from both participants’ and instructors’ perspectives suggest that …

Girls Club: The Gender Imbalance Of Youth Programs, A Case Study, Shayne Bell Jul 2011

Girls Club: The Gender Imbalance Of Youth Programs, A Case Study, Shayne Bell

Capstone Collection

Youth around the world have proven that when they come together and put their energies toward a cause, impactful change can happen. While youth in the US have been involved in social issues for decades, there is a noticeable imbalance in the gender makeup of these groups: In civic engagement programs, social change organizations, and volunteer programs around the country, young women make up the large majority of those involved, creating a gender gap that cannot be ignored. It begs the question- why are so many more females involved in these programs than young men? What is causing this?

This …

Impact Of Peer Evaluation Confidentiality On Student Marks, Christina Hamme Peterson, N.Andrew Peterson Jul 2011

Impact Of Peer Evaluation Confidentiality On Student Marks, Christina Hamme Peterson, N.Andrew Peterson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Although group work is commonly used in university-level instruction, social loafing, domineering team members, poor attenders, and inequitable distribution of marks have been identified as obstacles to team-based learning. Peer evaluation has been proposed as one vehicle to address these issues. For use in grading, peer evaluations are often anonymous; however, as tools to address team functioning, they should not be conducted anonymously, but rather with the results discussed as feedback. It has been suggested, however, that non-confidential peer evaluations will artificially elevate students’ marks. In this study, we investigated the impact of peer evaluation confidentiality on students’ marks. Without …

Modernizing Marriage, Adam Candeub, Mae Kuykendall Jul 2011

Modernizing Marriage, Adam Candeub, Mae Kuykendall

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article proposes to modernize the archaic procedures states use to authorize marriages so as to provide legal flexibility, promote efficiency, and enhance individual choice. Almost universally, states require couples' presence within their borders, however briefly, for a ceremony. After considering the historical and policy rationales for this requirement and finding them either obsolete or incoherent, we propose that states offer marriages to those outside their borders. Such distance marriages could occur via video-conference, using the internet or even telephone, with readily available safeguards to prevent fraud. This simple reform would allow certain couples who cannot marry under local law …

Results: The results revealed a significant improvement for the total group in their being afraid of people with mental illness in general and being more …

Widening Batson's Net To Ensnare More Than The Unapologetically Bigoted Or Painfully Unimaginative Attorney, Jeffrey Bellin, Junichi P. Semitsu Jul 2011

Widening Batson's Net To Ensnare More Than The Unapologetically Bigoted Or Painfully Unimaginative Attorney, Jeffrey Bellin, Junichi P. Semitsu

Faculty Publications

In Snyder v. Louisiana, the Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out racially discriminatory jury selection and its belief that the three-step framework established in Batson v. Kentucky is capable of unearthing racially discriminatory peremptory strikes. Yet the Court left in place the talismanic protection available to those who might misuse the peremptory challenge—the unbounded collection of justifications that courts, including the Supreme Court, accept as “race neutral.”

To evaluate the Court’s continuing faith in Batson, we conducted a survey of all federal published and unpublished judicial decisions issued in this first decade of the new millennium (2000–2009) that …

Using Simulation Techniques To Improve The Client Flow Of The Kentucky Cabinet For Health And Family Services., Russell Edward Harpring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The client flow of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services is a complex process that deals with a high volume of clients on any given beginning half of the month. A simulation model of an average busy day in the system was built using the Arena Simulation package. Methods for creating a simulation using Arena are included in this work. Statistics were generated from a number of different sources to create an accurate representation of the model. The simulation model shows long wait times for clients coming into the system to receive benefits. Working with a state budget …

Fathers' Time Investments In Children: Do Sons Get More?, Kristin Mammen Jul 2011

Fathers' Time Investments In Children: Do Sons Get More?, Kristin Mammen

Publications and Research

Evidence suggests that, from birth, fathers treat sons differently than daughters in the U.S., as well as in developing countries. Fathers' time investments in children are one channel through which differential treatment by gender may affect children's outcomes. This paper uses data from the 2003 American Time Use Survey to explore three questions about paternal time in married two-parent families: Does the gender composition of his children affect the amount of time a father spends with them? If so, does the gender of the individual child have an additional effect? And is a girl advantaged or disadvantaged by the presence …
