Collecting International Merchant Seafarer Oral Histories: Experiences And Reflections, Tom Matyók
Collecting International Merchant Seafarer Oral Histories: Experiences And Reflections, Tom Matyók
The Qualitative Report
Investigating highly mobile labor populations presents researchers with unique challenges and opportunities. In this paper, I share my experiences and reflections in collecting international merchant seafarers' oral histories and propose to move the dialogue forward regarding the use of hybrid qualitative research practices. Seafarers are constantly moving, at sea and in port, and traditional research methodologies are inadequate in determining the nature of modern-day seafaring. I suggest how qualitative research methods must be flexible enough to accommodate researchers' needs in a chaotic global milieu. Investigators researching highly mobile labor populations, as well as mobile immigrant and refugee communities, can gain …
Methodological And Ethical Dilemmas Encountered During Field Research Of Family Violence Experienced By Adolescent Women In Buenos Aires, Natalia Luxardo, Graciela Colombo, Gabriela Iglesias
Methodological And Ethical Dilemmas Encountered During Field Research Of Family Violence Experienced By Adolescent Women In Buenos Aires, Natalia Luxardo, Graciela Colombo, Gabriela Iglesias
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this article is to examine some obstacles and dilemmas related to methodological strategies and ethical considerations that arose during the fieldwork of research focused on family violence during the stages of pregnancy and childbirth in adolescent females in Buenos Aires during 2007. From this study, we are able to contribute some reflections in the arena of qualitative and mixed methods inquiries. Some of the problematic topics encountered were: institutional constraints, questionnaires with categories too abstract for the target population, lack of interest in participating, orthodox methods that did not work in the field and ethical protocols that …

Male Offenders' Work Experiences Pre-Prison, In-Prison, And Upon Reentry: Interactions Between Work And Crime, Kerry L. Edwards
Male Offenders' Work Experiences Pre-Prison, In-Prison, And Upon Reentry: Interactions Between Work And Crime, Kerry L. Edwards
Sociology ETDs
This qualitative study explored offenders work experiences outside of prison and in-prison, and then compared these experiences to their post-release work experiences and outcomes. The subjects' criminal histories varied, but during the study's initial interview all were incarcerated at lower security level facilities in a western state. Several different types of in-prison employment were compared; these differences included the type of task, the skill level, the work-site, and the beneficiary of the labor. Outcomes were classified according to work measures, and whether the subjects had been reincarcerated within six months of their release. The pre-prison findings suggested that the skill …
Reducing Math Anxiety: Findings From Incorporating Service Learning Into A Quantitative Reasoning Course At Seattle University, Allison Henrich, Kristi Lee
Reducing Math Anxiety: Findings From Incorporating Service Learning Into A Quantitative Reasoning Course At Seattle University, Allison Henrich, Kristi Lee
Numeracy
How might one teach mathematics to math-anxious students and at the same time reduce their math anxiety? This paper describes what we found when we incorporated a service learning component into a quantitative reasoning course at Seattle University in Fall 2010 (20 students) and Spring 2011 (28 students). The course is taken primarily by humanities majors, many of whom would not take a course in math if they didn’t need to satisfy the university’s core requirement. For the service learning component, each student met with and tutored children at local schools for 1-2 hours per week (total about 15 service …

Suburban Poverty: Barriers To Services And Injury Prevention Among Marginalized Women Who Use Methamphetamine, Miriam W. Boeri, Benjamin Tyndall, Denise R. Woodall
Faculty Articles
Objective: This paper aims to identify the needed healthcare and social services barriers for women living in suburban communities who are using or have used methamphetamine. Drug users are vulnerable to injury, violence and transmission of infectious diseases, and having access to healthcare has been shown to positively influence prevention and intervention among this population. Yet little is known regarding the social context of suburban drug users, their risks behaviors, and their access to healthcare.
Methods: The data collection involved participant observation in the field, face-to-face interviews and focus groups. Audio-recorded in-depth life histories, drug use histories, and resource needs …

Adolescent mothers and their children are at risk for a myriad of negative outcomes. This study examined risk and protective factors and their impact on a sample (N = 172) of impoverished adolescent mothers. Multiple regression analyses revealed that depressed adolescent mothers report higher levels of parenting stress and that their children are more at risk for maltreatment and are developmentally behind other babies. In addition, adolescent mothers with restricted social support have babies who are at higher risk for maltreatment. Finally, mothers who were older during pregnancy were more likely to stay in school. Implications for program development are …
Ghost Dancing And The Iron Horse: Surving Through Tradition And Technology, Alex K. Ruuska
Ghost Dancing And The Iron Horse: Surving Through Tradition And Technology, Alex K. Ruuska
Publication
This article explores how railroad technologies, so critical in constructing the imagined nation of the nineteenth-century United States, were simultaneously shaped by multiple social groups including the native communities of North America. This analysis demonstrates how Native Americans’ resistance to and use of railroad technologies contributed to the revitalization and construction of ritual practices and pan-Indian identities associated with the 1890s Ghost Dance. Using case studies of the Northern Paiutes of western Nevada and the Sioux nations of South Dakota, Native Americans’ utilization of railroad technologies are examined during two periods of encroachment, revealing shifting attitudes and practices towards Euroamerican …

Sustainable Leadership: Creating Foundations For Lasting Change, Matthew Lynch
Sustainable Leadership: Creating Foundations For Lasting Change, Matthew Lynch
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The change in the United States population and the pace of Internet technology-perhaps more dramatic than most universities may have forecasted-translates into more diverse prospective students with changing needs and interests in university education (Wilson & Meyer, 2009). Immigration and U.S. population growth patterns have converged into a new prospective student profile (Banks, 2008), such that between now and the year 2050, one in three U.S. residents will be Hispanic (U.S. Census, 2009). Similarly, African Americans and Black immigrants will increase to 15% of the U.S. population, and the Asian population will grow from 5.1% to 9.2%. People of two …
Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-07-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-07-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
Family Dynamics And Career Decision Self-Efficacy: A Study Of First Year Malaysian Undergraduates, M. Sumari
Family Dynamics And Career Decision Self-Efficacy: A Study Of First Year Malaysian Undergraduates, M. Sumari
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
The study explores the relationship between family functioning and career decision making self-efficacy in a sample of 925 college students in Malaysia. The results indicate that the relationships between family functioning subscales and career decision making self-efficacy subscales were between small and moderate. The study also found that each family functioning subscale contributed less than 15% of the variance in career decision-making self-efficacy. The total variance accounted for by the six family functioning subscales was small (32%). Implications for career counseling and future studies are discussed.
Poverty As The Worse Form Of Violence, N.A. Ishak, M. Forstater, R.H. Zakaria
Poverty As The Worse Form Of Violence, N.A. Ishak, M. Forstater, R.H. Zakaria
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Poverty and violence are difficult concepts to address from conceptual and definitional perspective, merely these two concepts receive appropriate attentions. Poverty can be the worse form of violence because it leaves effect until to the future generation. In other words poverty can lead to physically and mentally abuse to individual and their heirs. Thus, poverty as a form of violence must be seen as any act or condition that causes injury to health and well being of others. Thepurpose of this paper is to explore the concepts of poverty as a form of violence. This paper suggests, these two concepts …
