Comparative Study On The Performance Of A Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Fuelled By Ammonia And Hydrogen, S.A. Hajimolana, Mohd Azlan Hussain, Wan Mohd Ashri Wan Daud

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

In this work, a dynamic model of a cathode-supported ammonia fed-tubular solid oxide fuel cell (NH3-SOFC) is developed and presented. The model accounts for processes such as diffusion, inherent impedance, transport (heat and mass transfer), electrochemical phenomena, activation and concentration polarizations for anode and cathode, as well as ammonia decomposition. The performance of NH3-SOFC is compared to that of H2-SOFC, it is found that with the same inlet values for both SOFCs under similar conditions, the performance of the cathode-supported NH3-SOFC is much higher than that for the H2-SOFC.

Temperature Control Of Industrial Gas Phase Propylene Polymerization In Fluidized Bed Reactors Using Model Predictive Control, A. Shamiri, M.A. Hussain, F.S. Mjalli, A. Arami-Niya

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Two-phase dynamic model describing gas phase propylene polymerization in a fluidized bed reactor was used to explore the dynamic behavior and process control of the reactor temperature by manipulating the catalyst feed rate and reactor cooling water flow. The analysis was performed using a two phase model, the presence of particles in the bubbles and the excess gas in the emulsion phase and consequently polymerization reaction in both phases were considered. A model predictive control (MPC) technique is implemented to control of the nonlinear process and compared its performance with conventional PI controllers tuned using the Internal Model Control (IMC) …

Tackling Latency Using Fg, Priya Natarajan Sep 2011

Tackling Latency Using Fg, Priya Natarajan

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Applications that operate on datasets which are too big to fit in main memory, known in the literature as external-memory or out-of-core applications, store their data on one or more disks. Several of these applications make multiple passes over the data, where each pass reads data from disk, operates on it, and writes data back to disk. Compared with an in-memory operation, a disk-I/O operation takes orders of magnitude (approx. 100,000 times) longer; that is, disk-I/O is a high-latency operation. Out-of-core algorithms often run on a distributed-memory cluster to take advantage of a cluster's computing power, memory, disk space, and …

The Patentability Of Financial Methods: The Market Participants’ Perspectives, Stefania Fusco Sep 2011

The Patentability Of Financial Methods: The Market Participants’ Perspectives, Stefania Fusco

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

In the last few years, there has been a renewed interest in the validity of patenting business methods. The issue appeared to be settled in 1998 with State Street Bank & Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, Inc. However, in 2008, the Federal Circuit, responding to a more restrictive approach toward the patent system adopted by the Supreme Court, began questioning the soundness of the policy to extend patent protection to business methods. The Federal Circuit’s adjustment of its position occurred explicitly in In re Bilski when the court decided to rehear the case en banc and reconsider the …

Physics Faculty Publications

Self-compensation, the tendency of a crystal to lower its energy by forming point defects to counter the effects of a dopant, is here quantitatively proven. Based on a new theoretical formalism and several different experimental techniques, we demonstrate that the addition of 1.4 × 1021-cm−3 Ga donors in ZnO causes the lattice to form 1.7 × 1020-cm−3 Zn-vacancy acceptors. The calculated VZn formation energy of 0.2 eV is consistent with predictions from density functional theory. Our formalism is of general validity and can be used to investigate self-compensation in any degenerate semiconductor material.

Design Of A University Research Network: Analysis, Selection, And Implementation Planning, Anna P. Hopper

Master's Theses

This report focuses on the design of a university knowledge management system (KMS), and how such a system can provide the framework for students and faculty to partake in, share, and collaborate on research activities. The collaborative environment of a university KMS, or research network, must be established in order for a university to maintain its reputation as a competitive research institution and to develop its faculty and students outside the classroom. A research network may contain a variety of features, some of which include faculty profiles, forums, communication portals, publication links, biographies, faculty keywords, interest areas and contact information. …

Riverland 2.0: Blending Of Multiple User-Defined Slopes In A Procedurally Modeled Terrain, Jeffrey Jensen

Master's Projects

This writing project attempts to improve on and add features to the current program called RiverLand originally designed and implemented by Dr. Soon Tee Teoh. I discuss the original methods used by RiverLand to create procedurally generated terrain. I then explore the weaknesses of the original RiverLand which include having only linear ridges and undesirable medial axis cells. I then tackle the problem of recurring patterns when texturizing a surface with very few textures. I propose how to solve these problems and explain the methods used to accomplish this. I discuss the user interfaces that were designed to accommodate the …

Message from President: It would be fair enough to borrow from Shakespeare and proclaim the long budget crisis, which bodes to run from 2008 until 2013, as the fully nuclear winter of our discontent. Alas for the spirits of sorrow, the perpetual summer of our tropical state leaves us without adequate imagery to describe the gloom that pervades a campus that has been daunted by the people’s penury and demoralized by unaccountable private critics of exposed public servants. As Shakespeare well understood when he analyzed King Richard III, the deformity of the world eventually deforms even the strongest soul. Several …

Designing Pareto-Optimal Selection Systems: Formalizing The Decisions Required For Selection System Development, Wilfried De Corte, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The article presents an analytic method for designing Pareto-optimal selection systems where the applicants belong to a mixture of candidate populations. The method is useful in both applied and research settings. In an applied context, the present method is the first to assist the selection practitioner when deciding on 6 major selection design issues: (1) the predictor subset, (2) the selection rule, (3) the selection staging, (4) the predictor sequencing, (5) the predictor weighting, and (6) the stage retention decision issue. From a research perspective, the method offers a unique opportunity for studying the impact and relative importance of different …

Projection Of Diffracted Optical Atom Traps, Jeremy Kruger Sep 2011

Projection Of Diffracted Optical Atom Traps, Jeremy Kruger

Physics

Theoretical calculations were performed for the projection of a diffraction pattern created by a pinhole through a single-lens system using vector diffraction theory and a combination of programs (MathCAD, Igor, etc.). The projected diffraction patterns were then experimentally created, recorded, and analyzed. This work is part of a larger collaboration with Dr. Kat Gillen, to trap and manipulate atoms in a Magneto Optical Trap (MOT) and to make further steps in the direction of Quantum Computing using trapped neutral atoms.

Modeling The Collagen Fibril Network Of Biological Tissues As A Nonlinearly Elastic Material Using A Continuous Volume Fraction Distribution Function, Reza Shirazi, Pasquale Vena, Robert L. Sah, Stephen M. Klisch

Mechanical Engineering

Despite distinct mechanical functions, biological soft tissues have a common microstructure in which a ground matrix is reinforced by a collagen fibril network. The microstructural properties of the collagen network contribute to continuum mechanical tissue properties that are strongly anisotropic with tensile-compressive asymmetry. In this study, a novel approach based on a continuous distribution of collagen fibril volume fractions is developed to model fibril reinforced soft tissues as nonlinearly elastic and anisotropic material. Compared with other approaches that use a normalized number of fibrils for the definition of the distribution function, this representation is based on a distribution parameter (i.e. …
