Coorbit Spaces For Dual Pairs, Jens Gerlach Christensen, Gestur Ólafsson Sep 2011

Coorbit Spaces For Dual Pairs, Jens Gerlach Christensen, Gestur Ólafsson

Faculty Publications

In this paper we present an abstract framework for construction of Banach spaces of distributions from group representations. This extends the theory of coorbit spaces initiated by H.G. Feichtinger and K. Gröchenig in the 1980s. The coorbit theory sets up a correspondence between spaces of distributions and reproducing kernel Banach spaces. The original theory required that the initial representation was irreducible, unitary and integrable. As a consequence not all Bergman spaces could be described as coorbits. Our approach relies on duality arguments, which are often verifiable in cases where integrability fails. Moreover it does not require the representation to be …

Exposing 3-Separations In 3-Connected Matroids, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Geoff Whittle Sep 2011

Exposing 3-Separations In 3-Connected Matroids, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

Let M be a 3-connected matroid other than a wheel or a whirl. In the next paper in this series, we prove that there is an element whose deletion from M or M* is 3-connected and whose only 3-separations are equivalent to those induced by M. The strategy used to prove this theorem involves showing that we can remove some element from a leaf of the tree of 3-separations of M. The main result of this paper is designed to allow us to do this. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

Load Carriage Distance Run And Pushups Tests: No Body Mass Bias And Occupationally Relevant, Paul M. Vanderburgh, Nicholas S. Mickley, Philip A. Anloague, Kimber Lucius

Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications

Recent research has demonstrated body mass (M) bias in military physical fi tness tests favoring lighter, not just leaner, service members. Mathematical modeling predicts that a distance run carrying a backpack of 30 lbs would eliminate M-bias. The purpose of this study was to empirically test this prediction for the U.S. Army push-ups and 2-mile run tests. Two tests were performed for both events for each of 56 university Reserve Offi cer Training Corps male cadets: with (loaded) and without backpack (unloaded). Results indicated signifi cant M-bias in the unloaded and no M-bias in the loaded condition for both events. …

Analyses Of Sorex Longirostris Distribution In Arkansas And Across The Mississippi River, Garrett Adam Mikel Sep 2011

Analyses Of Sorex Longirostris Distribution In Arkansas And Across The Mississippi River, Garrett Adam Mikel

Theses and Dissertations

The southeastern shrew (Sorex longirostris) is considered uncommon and a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Arkansas, exhibiting an apparent gap in eastern Arkansas. Soricinae are exceptionally small and short-lived with limited dispersal, making them especially prone to speciation through long-term zoogeographic barriers to gene flow consistent with phylogeographic category 1. Therefore, I compiled Arkansas occurrences, evaluated persistence at previous capture sites in the state, surveyed additional counties, quantified microhabitat at my capture locations, and evaluated systematic status of S. longirostris east and west of the Mississippi River using mitochondrial DNA. Number of documented specimens in Arkansas has increased to …

The F5 Criterion Revised, Alberto Arri, John E. Perry Sep 2011

The F5 Criterion Revised, Alberto Arri, John E. Perry

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this work is to generalize part of the theory behind Faugere's "F5" algorithm. This is one of the fastest known algorithms to compute a Gröbner basis of a polynomial ideal I generated by polynomials f1,…,fm. A major reason for this is what Faugere called the algorithm's "new" criterion, and we call "the F5 criterion": it provides a sufficient condition for a set of polynomialsGto be a Gröbner basis. However. the F5 algorithm is difficult to grasp, and there are unresolved questions regarding its termination. This paper introduces some new concepts that place the …

The Method Of Approximate Particular Solutions For Solving Elliptic Problems With Variable Coefficients, C.S. Chen, Chia-Ming Fan, Pihua Wen Sep 2011

The Method Of Approximate Particular Solutions For Solving Elliptic Problems With Variable Coefficients, C.S. Chen, Chia-Ming Fan, Pihua Wen

Faculty Publications

A new version of the method of approximate particular solutions (MAPSs) using radial basis functions (RBFs) has been proposed for solving a general class of elliptic partial differential equations. In the solution process, the Laplacian is kept on the left-hand side as a main differential operator. The other terms are moved to the right-hand side and treated as part of the forcing term. In this way, the close-form particular solution is easy to obtain using various RBFs. The numerical scheme of the new MAPSs is simple to implement and yet very accurate. Three numerical examples are given and the results …

Socially Induced Ovulation Synchrony And Its Effect On Seabird Population Dynamics, Shandelle M. Henson, J. M. Cushing, James L. Hayward Sep 2011

Socially Induced Ovulation Synchrony And Its Effect On Seabird Population Dynamics, Shandelle M. Henson, J. M. Cushing, James L. Hayward

Faculty Publications

Spontaneous oscillator synchrony is a form of self-organization in which populations of interacting oscillators ultimately cycle together. This phenomenon occurs in a wide range of physical and biological systems. In rats and humans, oestrous/menstrual cycles synchronize through social stimulation with pheromones acting as synchronizing signals. In previous work, we showed that glaucous-winged gulls (Larus glaucescens) can lay eggs synchronously on an every-other-day schedule, and that synchrony increases with colony density. We posed a discrete-time mathematical model for reproduction during the breeding season based on the hypothesis that pre-ovulatory luteinizing hormone surges synchronize by means of visual, auditory and/or olfactory cues. …

Farmland Values: The Effects Of Commodity Prices, Yields, Profit Margins And Capitalization Rates, Matthew C. Stockton

Cornhusker Economics

Recent price increases for many of the crops grown in Nebraska have been followed directly by higher input costs. Land cost is one of these escalating factors. Typically, those that invest in real estate or land use a ratio of income relative to opportunity cost to evaluate the value of that purchase. This ratio involves factors related to the lands use and productive capacity, and is known as the “Capitalization rate” or “Cap Rate.”

Modelling The Ability Of Fare To Spread Am Peak Passenger Loads Using Rooftops, Neil J. Douglas, Liesel Henn, Keith Sloan Sep 2011

Modelling The Ability Of Fare To Spread Am Peak Passenger Loads Using Rooftops, Neil J. Douglas, Liesel Henn, Keith Sloan

World Transit Research

‘Rooftops' originates from theoretical work by Hotelling into location choice. In the 1970s, Hotelling’s ideas were applied to passengers' choice of intercity trains which gave rise to the name ‘rooftops' since the graphs resembled streets of rooftops. Rooftop models have focused on time but including fare is not difficult requiring ‘values of time' to convert fare into minutes. As a demonstration, a rooftops model was applied to a rail corridor to assess the effect of discounts and surcharges on passenger's choice of AM peak trains. The demand parameters such as the value of time and displacement were estimated by Stated …

Multi-Touch 3d Exploratory Analysis Of Ocean Flow Models, Thomas J. Butkiewicz, Colin Ware Sep 2011

Multi-Touch 3d Exploratory Analysis Of Ocean Flow Models, Thomas J. Butkiewicz, Colin Ware

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Modern ocean flow simulations are generating increasingly complex, multi-layer 3D ocean flow models. However, most researchers are still using traditional 2D visualizations to visualize these models one slice at a time. Properly designed 3D visualization tools can be highly effective for revealing the complex, dynamic flow patterns and structures present in these models. However, the transition from visualizing ocean flow patterns in 2D to 3D presents many challenges, including occlusion and depth ambiguity. Further complications arise from the interaction methods required to navigate, explore, and interact with these 3D datasets. We present a system that employs a combination of stereoscopic …

Continuous Maximal Regularity And Analytic Semigroups, Jeremy Lecrone, Gieri Simonett Sep 2011

Continuous Maximal Regularity And Analytic Semigroups, Jeremy Lecrone, Gieri Simonett

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we establish a result regarding the connection between continuous maximal regularity and generation of analytic semigroups on a pair of densely embedded Banach spaces. More precisely, we show that continuous maximal regularity for a closed operator A : E1 → E0 implies that A generates a strongly continuous analytic semigroup on E0 with domain equal E1.

Complete Determination Of The Pin1 Catalytic Domain Thermodynamic Cycle By Nmr Lineshape Analysis, Alexander I. Greenwood, Monique J. Rogals, Soumya De, Kun Ping Lu, Evgenii L. Kovrigin, Linda K. Nicholson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The phosphorylation-specific peptidyl-prolyl isomerase Pin1 catalyzes the isomerization of the peptide bond preceding a proline residue between cis and trans isomers. To best understand the mechanisms of Pin1 regulation, rigorous enzymatic assays of isomerization are required. However, most measures of isomerase activity require significant constraints on substrate sequence and only yield rate constants for the cis isomer, kciscatand apparent Michaelis constants, KAppM . By contrast, NMR lineshape analysis is a powerful tool for determining microscopic rates and populations of each state in a complex binding scheme. The isolated catalytic domain of Pin1 was employed as …

There is broad consensus regarding the health impact of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, yet considerable ambiguity exists about the nature and consequences of thirdhand smoke (THS). We introduce definitions of THS and THS exposure and review recent findings about constituents, indoor sorption-desorption dynamics, and transformations of THS; distribution and persistence of THS in residential settings; implications for pathways of exposure; potential clinical significance and health effects; and behavioral and policy issues that affect and are affected by THS. Physical and chemical transformations of tobacco smoke pollutants take place over time scales ranging from seconds to months and include …

Whispering-Gallery Acoustic Sensing: Characterization Of Mesoscopic Films And Scanning Probe Microscopy Applications, Andres H. La Rosa, Nan Li, Rodolfo Fernandez, Xiaohua Wang, Richard Nordstrom, S. K. Padigi

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Full understanding of the physics underlying the striking changes in viscoelasticity, relaxation time, and phase transitions that mesoscopic fluid-like films undergo at solid-liquid interfaces, or under confinement between two sliding solid boundaries, constitutes one of the major challenges in condensed matter physics. Their role in the imaging process of solid substrates by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is also currently controversial. Aiming at improving the reliability and versatility of instrumentation dedicated to characterize mesoscopic films, a noninvasive whispering-gallery acoustic sensing (WGAS) technique is introduced; its application as feedback control in SPM is also demonstrated. To illustrate its working principle and potential …

Kino: A Generic Document Management System For Biologists Using Sa-Rest And Faceted Search, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Priti Parikh, Maryam Panahiazar, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Document management has become an important consideration for the scientific community over the last decade. Human knowledge is central to many scientific domains, thus it is not possible to completely automate the document management process. Managing scientific documents require a semi-automatic approach to overcome issues of large volume, yet support the human participation in the process. In this paper we present Kino, a set of tools that streamline the document management process in life science domains. Kino is integrated with National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO), providing scientists access to quality domain models. Annotated documents are indexed using a faceted …

Use Of Optimal Control Models To Predict Treatment Time For Managing Tick-Borne Disease, Holly D. Gaff, Elsa Schaefer, Suzanne Lenhart

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Tick-borne diseases have been on the rise recently, and correspondingly, there is an increased interest in implementing control measures to decrease the risk. Optimal control provides an ideal tool to identify the best method for reducing risk while accounting for the associated costs. Using a previously published model, a variety of frameworks are assessed to identify the key factors influencing mitigation strategies. The level and duration of tick-reducing efforts are key metrics for understanding the successful reduction in tick-borne disease incidence. The results show that the punctuated nature of the tick's life history plays a critical role in reducing risk …
