Energy transfer plays a significant role in numerous chemical, physical, and biological processes. While the use of fluorescent proteins in Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies of biomolecules is common, energy transfer between fluorescent proteins and inorganic nanoparticles has not been explored in detail. In this study, energy transfer from fluorescent phycobiliproteins to noble metal nanoparticles was analyzed. Solutions of B-phycoerythrin (B-PE) were mixed with colloidal Au and Ag nanoparticles and were characterized by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy to determine the magnitude and mechanism of the energy transfer. It was found that the protein fluorescence was quenched after the …

Protections For Virtual Property: A Modern Restitutionary Approach, Jordan L. Ludwig
Protections For Virtual Property: A Modern Restitutionary Approach, Jordan L. Ludwig
Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review
Virtual online worlds have become a staple of modern society. Through an avatar, individuals may enter into virtual worlds, where they can do anything from completing epic quests to speculating on virtual “real estate.” Many virtual worlds have unique currencies, which have real-world value because of the high demand for in-game property. Disputes over virtual property, however, remain mostly, if not entirely, ungoverned by any body of law. This Comment seeks to address how to handle conflicts that arise over virtual world property. It concludes that the reemerging law of restitution, as promulgated in the Restatement (Third) of Restitution and …

Climate change scenarios suggest an increase in tropical ocean temperature by 1–3°C by 2099, potentially killing many coral reefs. But Arabian/Persian Gulf corals already exist in this future thermal environment predicted for most tropical reefs and survived severe bleaching in 2010, one of the hottest years on record. Exposure to 33–35°C was on average twice as long as in non-bleaching years. Gulf corals bleached after exposure to temperatures above 34°C for a total of 8 weeks of which 3 weeks were above 35°C. This is more heat than any other corals can survive, providing an insight into the present limits …
A Method For Field Calibration Of A Multibeam Echo Sounder, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber
A Method For Field Calibration Of A Multibeam Echo Sounder, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The use of multibeam echo sounders (MBES) has grown more frequent in applications like seafloor imaging, fisheries, and habitat mapping. Calibration of these instruments is important for understanding and validating the performance of MBES. For echo sounders in general, different calibration methodologies have been developed in controlled environments such as a fresh water tank and in the actual field of operation. While calibration in an indoor tank facility can bring excellent results in terms of accuracy, the amount of time required for a complete calibration can become prohibitively large. A field calibration can reveal the actual radiation beam pattern for …

On Equitable Social Welfare Functions Satisfying The Weak Pareto Axioma Complete Characterization, Ram Dubey, Tapan Mitra
On Equitable Social Welfare Functions Satisfying The Weak Pareto Axioma Complete Characterization, Ram Dubey, Tapan Mitra
Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The present paper examines the problem of aggregating infinite utility streams with a social welfare function that respects the Anonymity and Weak Pareto Axioms. The paper provides a complete characterization of domains (of the one period utilities) on which such an aggregation is possible. A social welfare function satisfying the Anonymity and Weak Pareto Axioms exists on precisely those domains that do not contain any set of the order typeof the set of positive and negative integers. The criterion is applied to decide on possibility and impossibility results for a variety of domains. It is also used to provide an …

Sources Of Gaseous Oxidized Mercury And Mercury Dry Deposition At Two Southeastern U.S. Sites, Peter S. Weiss-Penzias, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman
USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
Wet deposition measurements have shown that relative to other parts of the US, the southeastern region has the highest mercury (Hg) inputs. The source of this Hg has been investigated by multiple researchers and is suggested to be derived from local, regional and global sources. Here we focus on trying to understand potential sources of Hg to this area during periods dominated by dry gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) deposition. Dry deposition of GOM to a surrogate surface was measured in conjunction with speciated atmospheric Hg, and ancillary parameters from September 2007 through September 2008 at two sites located within 25 …
On Portability And Scalability Issues In Heterogeneous Computing, Zhu Wang
On Portability And Scalability Issues In Heterogeneous Computing, Zhu Wang
Student Theses and Dissertations
In heterogeneous computing systems, computing nodes might be different whereas each computing node contains different system resources such as processors, graphics processing units, memories, networks, storage units, etc. These computing nodes and their internal resources have to collaborate well to provide required computing capacity. Portability is always an issue in heterogeneous computing systems. Data generated on one machine might not be able to be used by others directly because of the incompatibility issues. Data type, endianness, size and padding situation are different in heterogeneous and even in homogeneous computing systems. Data marshaling procedure is indispensable, especially in open systems. In …

Effects Of Weathering On Aromatic Compounds In Beach Tars From The Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Usa, Michael A. Kruge
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Operators aboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform lost control of the Macondo No. 1 well about 90 km southwest of the Louisiana coast on April 20, 2010, leading to a catastrophic release of ca. 550 Gg of crude oil over the next 86 days [1]. Oil from the spill soon found its way to nearby coastal areas, leaving tarry deposits on beaches and marshes. Oil was reported on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama (180 km northeast of the well) on June 5 and the relatively fresh sample discussed herein (GSA) was collected that same day. Oil reached the beach …

STAT3, also known as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, is a DNA transcription enzyme. In mammals including humans, STAT3 regulates the expression of a variety of genes that play a role in embryonic development. Specifically, STAT3 regulates cell division, cell differentiation and cell death (apoptosis). During embryonic development, STAT3 proteins are phosphorylated in a cell's cytoplasm in response to chemical growth factors. Once phosphorylated, STAT3 proteins pair up to form homodimers that act like pliers. STAT3 homodimers are transferred into the cell nucleus, where they bind to DNA to regulate embryonic development. When mutations of the STAT3 gene …
Quantitatively Understanding Transit Behavior From The Rider’S Point Of View, Colin Bick
Quantitatively Understanding Transit Behavior From The Rider’S Point Of View, Colin Bick
Journal of Public Transportation
Arrival time uncertainty is a major source of negative perception by riders, yet how this uncertainty manifests in the rider's experience is not well-studied. While operators constantly make efforts to improve reliability, and real-time arrival predictions reduce uncertainty for riders in transit, it is also possible to lessen frustration by better informing riders of system behavior beforehand. This work introduces a new method for understanding transit behavior through an analysis of historical arrival time data from San Francisco. The results identify impacts of timeliness on rider experience, such as that average wait time is minimized by showing up five minutes …

Using Avl Data To Improve Transit On-Time Performance, Fabian Cevallos, Xiaobo Wang, Zhenmin Chen, Albert Gan
Journal of Public Transportation
This paper describes an approach for improving on-time performance at transit agencies. It takes advantage of the schedule adherence information from an AVL system. A methodology that can be used to update the bus timetables by using AVL schedule adherence data is described. Using statistical analysis, the main goal is to maximize the density area of the on-time performance range. From this distribution, the optimal value is obtained and used to update the times in the timetables. Then, a comparison process is used to assess the on-time performance improvements. In addition, a simulation process is presented to provide a different …

An Examination Of Three Approaches To Metro Rolling Stock Design To Ameliorate Extended Dwell Times Due To Passenger Growth And Associated Crowding., Selby Coxon, Karen Burns, Arthur De Bono, Robbie Napper
World Transit Research
Increased patronage of suburban rail in many cities of the world has effected network performance. Crowding, especially during peak travel times detrimentally effects dwell times thus reducing network capacity. This paper examines three approaches undertaken by three rail operators to the design of rolling stock in order to ameliorate this problem. Each of the network operations examined in this paper were selected due to their different approaches to the problem but reflecting their own set of circumstances. Stockholm Lokaltrafik AB ran experimental carriages amongst its regular system to determine a new interior carriage design. The Melbourne suburban rail system explored …

Case Methods In Civil Engineering Teaching, Timothy A. Newson, Norbert J. Delatte
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
English: There have been significant changes in undergraduate civil engineering curricula in the last two decades. Key issues for university curriculum committees are selection and transference of appropriate skills and attributes for students to succeed in the industry. Despite significant changes occurring in teaching theories, civil engineering education still relies heavily on deductive instruction. Case-based teaching is one of the most widespread forms of inductive learning and this paper describes the differences between two of the most familiar types: 'case-histories' and 'case-studies'. These methods are presented using the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkway collapse as an exemplar. The benefits of …

The Constructions Of Almost Binary Sequence Pairs And Binary Sequence Pairs With Three-Level Autocorrelation, Xiuping Peng, Chengqian Xu, Guang Li, Krishnasamy T. Arasu
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In this letter, a new class of almost binary sequence pairs with a single zero element and three autocorrelation values is presented. The new almost binary sequence pairs are based on cyclic difference sets and difference set pairs. By applying the method to the binary sequence pairs, new binary sequence pairs with three-level autocorrelation are constructed. It is shown that new sequence pairs from our constructions are balanced or almost balanced and have optimal three-level autocorrelation when the characteristic sequences or sequence pairs of difference sets or difference set pairs are balanced or almost balanced and have optimal autocorrelations.
Addressing Gaps In The Dodd-Frank Act: Directors' Risk Management Oversight Obligations, Kristin N. Johnson
Addressing Gaps In The Dodd-Frank Act: Directors' Risk Management Oversight Obligations, Kristin N. Johnson
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
In the years leading to the recent financial crisis, finance theorists introduced innovative methods, including quantitative financial models and derivative instruments, to measure and mitigate risk exposure. During the financial crisis, financial institutions facing insolvency revealed pervasive misunderstandings, misapplications, and mistaken assumptions regarding these complex risk management methods. As losses in financial markets escalated and caused liquidity and solvency crises, commentators sharply criticized directors and executives at large financial institutions for their risk management decisions. By adopting the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Congress directly and indirectly addresses certain risk management oversight concerns at large, complex financial …
