Gulfwatch examines the effects of decades of development and industrialization on the water quality of the Gulf as it relates to human health primarily through assessing contaminant exposure of marine organisms. Gulfwatch scientists collect blue mussels at over 60 US and Canadian sites Gulfwide, and analyze the organisms’ tissue for potentially harmful levels and concentrations of toxins including heavy metals, chlorinated pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). New Hampshire increased the number of Gulfwatch sampling locations from two sites per year in 1997 to an average of five sites per year from 1998-2010. The increased spatial coverage …

Effects Of Animal Diet, Manure Application Rate, And Tillage On Transport Of Microorganisms From Manure-Amended Fields, Lisa M. Durso, John Gilley, David B. Marx, Bryan Woodbury

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Manure from cattle fed distillers’ grain or corn diets was applied to fields, and the fields were subjected to rainfall simulation tests. Manure was added at three rates on till and no-till plots. Correlations between microbial transport and runoff characteristics were identified. Results indicate that diet affects phage but not bacterial transport from manure-amended fields.

A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh Sep 2011

A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The beginning of modern science is marked by efforts of pioneers to understand the natural world using a quantitative approach. As Galileo wrote, "the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics". The traditional undergraduate course curriculum is heavily focused on individual disciplines like biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics rather than interdisciplinary courses. This fragmented teaching of sciences in majority of universities leave biology outside the quantitative and mathematical approaches. The landscape of biomedical science has transformed dramatically with advances in high throughput experimental approaches, which led to the huge amount of data. The best possible approach to generate …

2,5-Dimethyl-1,3-DinitroBenzene, Dean Johnston Sep 2011

2,5-Dimethyl-1,3-DinitroBenzene, Dean Johnston

Chemistry Faculty Scholarship

The title compound, C(8)H(8)N(2)O(4), was prepared via the nitration of p-xylene. The mol-ecules are stacked along the c axis in an antiparallel manner. The two nitro groups are rotated relative to the benzene ring with dihedral angles of 44.50 (7) and 31.67 (8)°. The tilt of the nitro groups allows the formation of C-H⋯O inter-actions between the ring C-H and nitro groups of adjacent mol-ecules creating puckered sheets perpendicular to the c axis. The H atoms of the methyl group in the 5-position are disordered (60° rotation) with an occupancy of 0.616 (19) for the major component. The crystal was …

Educational Curriculum Standards & Standardized Educational Tests: Comparing Apples & Oranges?, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

Mandated biology curriculum standards and standardized tests may vary widely from one state to another, making academic-performance comparisons among the states problematic. This report outlines the effects of the “No Child Left Behind” law and uses California as a test case against which teachers in other states may make comparisons of their own biology curriculum standards and tests. Several sources are cited that offer sample multiple-choice questions that have appeared on previous California standardized tests for sciences/life sciences/biology. These examples, and critique thereof, may help teachers better prepare their own tests to improve student performance in meeting the state's curriculum …

An Axiomatic Approach To The Non-Linear Theory Of Generalized Functions And Consistency Of Laplace Transforms, Todor D. Todorov Sep 2011

An Axiomatic Approach To The Non-Linear Theory Of Generalized Functions And Consistency Of Laplace Transforms, Todor D. Todorov

Mathematics

We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers who are interested in the non-linear theory of …

Park, Ryu, and Lee recently defined a Henstock-type integral, which lies entirely between the McShane and the Henstock integrals. This paper presents two characterizing convergence conditions for this integral, and derives other known convergence theorems as corollaries.

School-Within-A-School And Its Effectiveness As Measured By Improved Grades, Increased Attendance, And Student Satisfaction, Amanda E. Shelmire Sep 2011

School-Within-A-School And Its Effectiveness As Measured By Improved Grades, Increased Attendance, And Student Satisfaction, Amanda E. Shelmire

Dissertations

Although the number of high school students not graduating is alarming, a successful transition from middle school to high school can place students on the path toward graduation. In 2009, a large, suburban high school implemented a school-within-a-school program to help ease this difficult transition for incoming, at-risk freshmen students. The school-within-a-school program assists students before they begin to struggle while providing them with a team teaching approach within the traditional high school setting. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the school-within-a-school program on student success, using the school district‘s outcome measures of grades and …

An Integrated Systems Approach To Deconstructing Glycosylation, L. K. Mahal, John F. Rakus, Kanoelani Pilobello, P. Agrawal Sep 2011

An Integrated Systems Approach To Deconstructing Glycosylation, L. K. Mahal, John F. Rakus, Kanoelani Pilobello, P. Agrawal

Chemistry Faculty Research

Glycosylation involves the post-translational addition of carbohydrates to protein molecules and is an intricate and indispensable biochemical process. Study of this complicated network of interactions is hindered by the lack of a coding template analogous to the genetic code, and by the vast structural complexity inherent to carbohydrate polymers. We use lectins (non-enzymatic carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immunological origin) as microarray probes to identify carbohydrate features expressed on cellular surfaces. Specifically, we utilized lectin microarray technology to investigate the differences in carbohydrates expressed by the cell lines of the Nation Cancer Institute’s NCI-60 panel. Our investigation identified tissue-specific expression differences in …

An Architecture Maturity Model Of Software Product Line, Faheem Ahmed, Luiz Fernando Capretz Sep 2011

An Architecture Maturity Model Of Software Product Line, Faheem Ahmed, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Software architecture has been a key research area in the software engineering community due to its significant role in creating high-quality software. The trend of developing product lines rather than single products has made the software product line a viable option in the industry. Software product line architecture (SPLA) is regarded as one of the crucial components in the product lines, since all of the resulting products share this common architecture. The increased popularity of software product lines demands a process maturity evaluation methodology. Consequently, this paper presents an architecture process maturity model for software product line engineering to evaluate the …

Green Synthesis Of Polycyclic Benzimidazole Derivatives And Organic Semiconductors, Masashi Mamada, Cesar Perez-Bolivar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Sep 2011

Green Synthesis Of Polycyclic Benzimidazole Derivatives And Organic Semiconductors, Masashi Mamada, Cesar Perez-Bolivar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Polycyclic benzimidazole derivatives, an important class of compounds in organic electronics and photovoltaics, were prepared using a solvent-free "green" process based on heating carboxylic acid anhydrides and arylene diamines in the presence of zinc acetate in the solid state. Products were isolated and purified directly by train sublimation of the crude reaction mixtures. The reaction conditions were optimized using various carboxylic acid anhydrides. Optical and electrochemical properties of these materials are also described.

Bioenergy Feedstock-Specific Enrichment Of Microbial Populations During High-Solids Thermophilic Deconstruction, Amitha P. Reddy, Martin Allgaier, Steven W. Singer, Terry C. Hazen, Blake A. Simmons, Philip Hugenholtz, Jean S. Vandergheynst

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Thermophilic microbial communities that are active in a high-solids environment offer great potential for the discovery of industrially relevant enzymes that efficiently deconstruct bioenergy feedstocks. In this study, finished green waste compost was used as an inoculum source to enrich microbial communities and associated enzymes that hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose during thermophilic high-solids fermentation of the bioenergy feedstocks switchgrass and corn stover. Methods involving the disruption of enzyme and plant cell wall polysaccharide interactions were developed to recover xylanase and endoglucanase activity from deconstructed solids. Xylanase and endoglucanase activity increased by more than a factor of 5, upon four successive …

Modelling The Causes And Consequences Of Perceptions Of Personal Safety On Public Transport Ridership, Alexa Delbosc, Graham Currie Sep 2011

Modelling The Causes And Consequences Of Perceptions Of Personal Safety On Public Transport Ridership, Alexa Delbosc, Graham Currie

World Transit Research

Fears about personal safety on public transport can have an important impact on ridership. A range of studies have examined different factors that influence perceptions of crime risk. This study uses structural equation modelling to explore the influences on perceptions of safety on public transport and the impact these perceptions have on ridership using a survey sample from Melbourne, Australia. The largest direct influences on feelings of safety on public transport were trust in others and feeling safe in one’s home or on the street at night. Gender and age are commonly-cited influences in the literature but in this model …

Art Practice As Research In The Classroom: A New Paradigm In Art Education, Julia Marshall, Kimberley D'Adamo Sep 2011

Art Practice As Research In The Classroom: A New Paradigm In Art Education, Julia Marshall, Kimberley D'Adamo

Kimberley D'Adamo: Art, Curriculum, Publications, and Other Scholarly Works

Student experiences at Berkeley High School reveal the generative potential of the art practice-as-research approach—how deep, broad, and creative the learning can be, and how powerful this model is in changing student attitudes toward art and themselves as artists and learners. This model of self-directed, inquiry-based learning works well because student art practice is cast as research and is structured as research. As a result, students make discoveries and connections that go beyond their expectations. They also acquire skills and understandings that transfer into their academic studies. In partic-ular, they find that learning can be engaging and that a trail …

Performance Analysis Of Cognitive Radio Systems Under Qos Constraints And Channel Uncertainty, Sami Akin, Mustafa Cenk Gursoy Sep 2011

Performance Analysis Of Cognitive Radio Systems Under Qos Constraints And Channel Uncertainty, Sami Akin, Mustafa Cenk Gursoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, performance of cognitive transmission over time-selective flat fading channels is studied under quality of service (QoS) constraints and channel uncertainty. Cognitive secondary users (SUs) are assumed to initially perform channel sensing to detect the activities of the primary users, and then attempt to estimate the channel fading coefficients through training. Energy detection is employed for channel sensing, and different minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) estimation methods are considered for channel estimation. In both channel sensing and estimation, erroneous decisions can be made, and hence, channel uncertainty is not completely eliminated. In this setting, performance is studied and interactions between …

Combinatorial Bounds On Hilbert Functions Of Fat Points In Projective Space, Susan Cooper, Brian Harbourne, Zach Teitler Sep 2011

Combinatorial Bounds On Hilbert Functions Of Fat Points In Projective Space, Susan Cooper, Brian Harbourne, Zach Teitler

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study Hilbert functions of certain non-reduced schemes A supported at finite sets of points in PN, in particular, fat point schemes. We give combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds for the Hilbert function of A using nothing more than the multiplicities of the points and information about which subsets of the points are linearly dependent. When N = 2, we give these bounds explicitly and we give a sufficient criterion for the upper and lower bounds to be equal. When this criterion is satisfied, we give both a simple formula for the Hilbert function and combinatorially defined …

Probing Single-Molecule Enzyme Active-Site Conformational State Intermittent Coherence, Yufan He, Yue Li, Saptarshi Mukherjee, Yan Wu, Honggao Yan, H. Peter Lu Sep 2011

Probing Single-Molecule Enzyme Active-Site Conformational State Intermittent Coherence, Yufan He, Yue Li, Saptarshi Mukherjee, Yan Wu, Honggao Yan, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The relationship between protein conformational dynamics and enzymatic reactions has been a fundamental focus in modern enzymology. Using single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) with a combined statistical data analysis approach, we have identified the intermittently appearing coherence of the enzymatic conformational state from the recorded single-molecule intensity-time trajectories of enzyme 6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin pyrophosphokinase (HPPK) in catalytic reaction. The coherent conformational state dynamics suggests that the enzymatic catalysis involves a multistep conformational motion along the coordinates of substrate-enzyme complex formation and product releasing, presenting as an extreme dynamic behavior intrinsically related to the time bunching effect that we have reported previously. …
