Using Borehole Logging And Electron Backscatter Diffraction To Orient An Ice Core From Upper Fremont Glacier, Wyoming, Usa, R. W. Obbard, T. Cassano, K. Aho, G. Troderman, I. Baker Sep 2011

Using Borehole Logging And Electron Backscatter Diffraction To Orient An Ice Core From Upper Fremont Glacier, Wyoming, Usa, R. W. Obbard, T. Cassano, K. Aho, G. Troderman, I. Baker

Dartmouth Scholarship

While glacier fabric reflects the accumulated strain, detailed azimuthal information is required to link the microstructure to the flow, and this is not easily gathered at depth. Borehole logging provides a way to obtain a log of azimuthal orientation of tilted stratigraphic features that can be used to orient the core with respect to glacier flow. We demonstrate this using acoustic borehole logs and the ice core from a 162 m borehole in Upper Fremont Glacier, Wind River Range, Wyoming, USA. We measured the dip of tilted dust and bubble layers in the actual ice core, identified them on the …

The Baryon-Dark Matter Ratio Via Moduli Decay After Affleck-Dine Baryogenesis, Scott Watson, Gordon Kane, Jing Shao, Hai-Bo Yu Sep 2011

The Baryon-Dark Matter Ratio Via Moduli Decay After Affleck-Dine Baryogenesis, Scott Watson, Gordon Kane, Jing Shao, Hai-Bo Yu

Physics - All Scholarship

Low-scale supersymmetry breaking in string motivated theories implies the presence of O(100) TeV scale moduli, which generically lead to a significant modification of the history of the universe prior to Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Such an approach implies a non-thermal origin for dark matter resulting from scalar decay, where the lightest supersymmetric particle can account for the observed dark matter relic density. We study the further effect of the decay on the baryon asymmetry of the universe, and find that this can satisfactorily address the problem of the over-production of the baryon asymmetry by the Affleck-Dine mechanism in the MSSM. Remarkably, …

Effect Of Passive Integrated Transponder Tag Implantation Site On Tag Retention, Growth, And Survival Of Two Sizes Of Juvenile Bluegills And Yellow Perch, Mark A. Kaemingk, Michael J. Weber, Paul R. Mckenna, Michael L. Brown Sep 2011

Brown

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags are commonly used to monitor growth, habitat use, activity rates, and survival of individual fish. However, for successful completion of research objectives, the tags must be retained and must not affect fish growth or survival. We compared the effects of PIT tagging location on tag retention, growth, and survival of juvenile bluegills Lepomis macrochirus and yellowperch Perca flavescens. In total, 80 bluegills and 80 yellow perch from two size-classes (75–101 and 128–162 mm total length) were randomly assigned to a control or to one of three tagging location treatments: isthmus, body cavity, or dorsal musculature. …

Exposed And Strongly Exposed Points In Symmetric Spaces Of Measurable Operators, M. M. Czerwinska Sep 2011

Exposed And Strongly Exposed Points In Symmetric Spaces Of Measurable Operators, M. M. Czerwinska

Analysis Seminar

Let be a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful, normal, semifinite trace , and let be a symmetric Banach function space on [0, (1)). The symmetric space (, ) of -measurable operators consists of all -measurable operators for which the singular value function () belongs to and is equipped with the norm ‖‖ₑ(,) = ‖()‖ₑ. Special cases of noncommutative symmetric spaces include Lₚ(, ) (noncommutative Lₚ-spaces), unitary matrix spaces ₑ, and Schatten spaces ₚ, in particular trace-class ₁ and the Hilbert-Schmidt operators ₂. Let (, ‖⋅‖) be a Banach space, with the unit sphere and …

Spatial Correlation Of Interseismic Coupling And Coseismic Rupture Extent Of The 2011 Mw=9.0 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade Sep 2011

Spatial Correlation Of Interseismic Coupling And Coseismic Rupture Extent Of The 2011 Mw=9.0 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake, John P. Loveless, Brendan J. Meade

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Imaging the extent to which the rupture areas of great earthquakes coincide with regions of pre-seismic interplate coupling is central to understanding patterns of strain accumulation and release through the earthquake cycle. Both geodetic and seismic estimates of the coseismic rupture extent for the March 11, 2011 MW = 8.9–9.0 earthquake Tohoku-oki earthquake may be spatially correlated (0.26 ± 0.05 to 0.82 ± 0.05) with a region estimated to be partially to fully coupled in the interseismic period preceding the earthquake, though there is substantial variation in the estimated distribution and magnitude of coseismic slip. The ∼400 km-long region estimated …

The Initial Mass Function And Disk Frequency Of The Ρ Ophiuchi Cloud: An Extinction-Limited Sample, Kristen Erickson, Bruce Wilking, Michael Meyer, John Robinson, Lauren Stephenson Sep 2011

The Initial Mass Function And Disk Frequency Of The Ρ Ophiuchi Cloud: An Extinction-Limited Sample, Kristen Erickson, Bruce Wilking, Michael Meyer, John Robinson, Lauren Stephenson

Physics Faculty Works

We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of an unbiased, extinction-limited sample of candidate young stars covering 1.3 deg2 of the ρ Ophiuchi star-forming region. While infrared, X-ray, and optical surveys of the cloud have identified many young stellar objects (YSOs), these surveys are biased toward particular stages of stellar evolution and are not optimal for studies of the disk frequency and initial mass function. We have obtained over 300 optical spectra to help identify 135 association members based on the presence of Hα in emission, lithium absorption, X-ray emission, a mid-infrared excess, a common proper motion, reflection nebulosity, and/or …

2011 Fall Engr333 Project Assignment, Matthew K. Heun Sep 2011

2011 Fall Engr333 Project Assignment, Matthew K. Heun

ENGR 333

The Fall 2011 ENGR333 project focused on the Bunker Interpretive Center (BIC) at Calvin University.

I asked the students “What would it take for Calvin College to obtain an Energy Star rating for the BIC? Or, if the BIC already qualifies for an Energy Star rating, what would it take to improve the energy efficiency of the BIC (as measured by Energy Star metrics) by 15%, thereby ensuring Energy Star performance of the building into the future?”

Customer

As I recall, the customer for this project was Biology faculty member Randy Van Dragt.

Looking To The Future: An Examination Of The Potential For Sat-Optional Admissions, Albert Betts Jr Sep 2011

Looking To The Future: An Examination Of The Potential For Sat-Optional Admissions, Albert Betts Jr

Theses and Dissertations

The use of SAT scores in the college admissions process has been increasingly criticized in recent years for a variety of reasons. There are those who continue to support the use of the SAT in the college admissions process, those who oppose its use, and those who believe the best option is to make the submission of standardized tests scores optional. Currently, all applicants for undergraduate admission to Rowan University with less than 24 college credits earned must submit standardized test scores along with their high school and college transcripts when applying for admission to the university. The purpose of …

Facilitating Joint Chaos And Fractal Analysis Of Biosignals Through Nonlinear Adaptive Filtering., Jianbo Gao, Jing Hu, Wen-Wen Tung Sep 2011

Facilitating Joint Chaos And Fractal Analysis Of Biosignals Through Nonlinear Adaptive Filtering., Jianbo Gao, Jing Hu, Wen-Wen Tung

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Chaos and random fractal theories are among the most important for fully characterizing nonlinear dynamics of complicated multiscale biosignals. Chaos analysis requires that signals be relatively noise-free and stationary, while fractal analysis demands signals to be non-rhythmic and scale-free.

Methodology/Principal Findings

To facilitate joint chaos and fractal analysis of biosignals, we present an adaptive algorithm, which: (1) can readily remove nonstationarities from the signal, (2) can more effectively reduce noise in the signals than linear filters, wavelet denoising, and chaos-based noise reduction techniques; (3) can readily decompose a multiscale biosignal into a series of intrinsically bandlimited functions; and (4) …

Fluorescence Emission Study Of Cdse/Zns Quantum Dot And Au Nanoparticles Composite For Application In Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators, Subhash Chandra, John Doran, Manus Kennedy, S Mccormack, A Chatten Sep 2011

Fluorescence Emission Study Of Cdse/Zns Quantum Dot And Au Nanoparticles Composite For Application In Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators, Subhash Chandra, John Doran, Manus Kennedy, S Mccormack, A Chatten

Conference Papers

Fluorescence of core shell (CdSe/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) and Au nanoparticles (NPs) composite has been studied for application in quantum dot solar concentrators (QDSC). We conclude two points from the particular QD/Au NP composite studied. One; for the particular Au NPs concentration, the relative fluorescence emission enhancement increases with decreasing QD concentration. Second; the enhancement is more pronounced for the Au nanoparticles whose surface plasmon resonance wavelength overlaps with the absorption peak of QDs. The fundamental concept that could describe the change in fluorescence emission of QDs in the presence of Au NPs is the locally enhanced electromagnetic field induced …

Extracting An Entanglement Signature From Only Classical Mutual Information, David J. Starling, Curtis J. Broadbent, John C. Howell Sep 2011

Extracting An Entanglement Signature From Only Classical Mutual Information, David J. Starling, Curtis J. Broadbent, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We introduce a quantity which is formed using classical notions of mutual information and which is computed using the results of projective measurements. This quantity constitutes a sufficient condition for entanglement and represents the amount of information that can be extracted from a bipartite system for spacelike separated observers. In addition to discussion, we provide simulations as well as experimental results for the singlet and maximally correlated mixed states.

Bodyweight Squat Movement Changes After A High-Intensity Short-Rest Workout, David R. Hooper Sep 2011

Bodyweight Squat Movement Changes After A High-Intensity Short-Rest Workout, David R. Hooper

Master's Theses

High intensity (≥75%1RM), short rest (≤30 seconds) workouts (HISR) have increased in popularity in recent years despite very little scientific study as well as contradicting the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) position stand. The purpose of this study was to assess the changes in movement associated with the fatigue resulting from a HISR workout. 14 males underwent a 3 dimensional analysis of 5 bodyweight squats before and after a HISR workout. Peak angle, total displacement and rate were assessed for knee flexion, trunk flexion, hip flexion, hip rotation and hip adduction. Subjects were split in to two groups: high …

Evaluation Of Cathode Materials For Low Temperature (500-700c) Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Alexander M. Lassman Sep 2011

Evaluation Of Cathode Materials For Low Temperature (500-700c) Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Alexander M. Lassman

Master's Theses

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have gained a great deal of interest, due to their potential for high efficiency power generation and ability to utilize hydrogen fuel, as well as various hydrocarbon-based fuels. A recent trend in SOFC development has been towards lower operating temperatures (500-700°C), which can substantially reduce the cost and complexity of the system. This thesis presents an investigation into state of the art Ba- and La- based cathode materials for use in low temperature (500-700°C) solid oxide fuel cells.

Synthesis of A-site deficient [A=0.97] Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 (BSCF) was …
