Near Optimal Control Of Mobile Robot Formations, Travis Dierks, Bryan Brenner, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, the infinite horizon optimal tracking control problem is solved online and forward-in-time for leader-follower based formation control of nonholonomic mobile robots. using the backstepping design approach, the dynamical controller inputs for the robots are approximated from nonlinear optimal control techniques in order to track the control velocities designed to keep the formation. the proposed nonlinear optimal control technique, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming, uses neural networks (NN's) to solve the optimal formation control problem in discrete-time in the presence of unknown internal dynamics and a known control coefficient matrix. All NN's are tuned online using novel …

Longitudinal Emittance Blow-Up In The Lhc, P. Baudrenghien, A. Butterworth, M. Jaussi, T. Mastoridis, G. Papotti, E. Shaposhnikova, J. Tuckmantel
Longitudinal Emittance Blow-Up In The Lhc, P. Baudrenghien, A. Butterworth, M. Jaussi, T. Mastoridis, G. Papotti, E. Shaposhnikova, J. Tuckmantel
Physics
The LHC relies on Landau damping for longitudinal stability. To avoid decreasing the stability margin at high energy, the longitudinal emittance must be continuously increased during the acceleration ramp. Longitudinal blow-up provides the required emittance growth. The method was implemented through the summer of 2010. We inject band-limited RF phase-noise in the main accelerating cavities during the whole ramp of about 11 minutes. Synchrotron frequencies change along the energy ramp, but the digitally created noise tracks the frequency change. The position of the noise-band, relative to the nominal synchrotron frequency, and the bandwidth of the spectrum are set by pre-defined …
Lipschitz Regularity For Inner-Variational Equations, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Leonid V. Kovalev, Jani Onninen
Lipschitz Regularity For Inner-Variational Equations, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Leonid V. Kovalev, Jani Onninen
Mathematics - All Scholarship
We obtain Lipschitz regularity results for a fairly general class of nonlinear first-order PDEs. These equations arise from the inner variation of certain energy integrals. Even in the simplest model case of the Dirichlet energy the inner-stationary solutions need not be differentiable everywhere; the Lipschitz continuity is the best possible. But the proofs, even in the Dirichlet case, turn out to relay on topological arguments. The appeal to the inner-stationary solutions in this context is motivated by the classical problems of existence and regularity of the energy-minimal deformations in the theory of harmonic mappings and certain mathematical models of nonlinear …
Follicular Dendritic Cells, Resting Cd4+ T Cells And Human Immunodeficiency Virus Expression, Changna Wang
Follicular Dendritic Cells, Resting Cd4+ T Cells And Human Immunodeficiency Virus Expression, Changna Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Many events associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection/replication occur in and around the germinal centers (GCs) of secondary lymphoid tissues where follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) reside, suggesting that this microenvironment may contribute unique signaling that is important to viral progression. My research focused on characterizing signaling, both positive and negative, contributed by FDCs that affects HIV infection and replication. Specifically, I determined if FDC signals could induce the expression of latent HIV in T cells and if so, to characterize the signaling pathways involved. Moreover, I also examined the ability of FDCs to produce inhibitory signals that might block …
Social Interactions In The Labor Market, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner, John A. Bishop
Social Interactions In The Labor Market, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner, John A. Bishop
Economics - All Scholarship
We examine theoretically and empirically social interactions in labor markets and how policy prescriptions can change dramatically when there are social interactions present. Spillover effects increase labor supply and conformity effects make labor supply perfectly inelastic at a reference group average. The demand for a good may also be influenced by either a spillover effect or a conformity effect. Positive spillover increases the demand for the good with interactions, and a conformity effect makes the demand curve pivot to become less price sensitive. Similar social interactions effects appear in the associated derived demands for labor. Individual and community factors may …
Pulse Profile Rule In Laser Heating Of Opaque Targets In Air, Bassam H. Habib
Pulse Profile Rule In Laser Heating Of Opaque Targets In Air, Bassam H. Habib
Baghdad Science Journal
A theoretical model is developed to determine time evolution of temperature at the surface of an opaque target placed in air for cases characterized by the formation of laser supported absorption waves (LSAW) plasmas. The model takes into account the power temporal variation throughout an incident laser pulse, (i.e. pulse shape, or simply: pulse profile).Three proposed profiles are employed and results are compared with the square pulse approximation of a constant power.

Oscillations Of First Order Linear Delay Differential Equations With Positive And Negative Coefficients, Hussain Ali Mohamad, Intisar Haitham Qasem, Zainab Ahmed Abdullah
Baghdad Science Journal
Oscillation criteria are obtained for all solutions of the first-order linear delay differential equations with positive and negative coefficients where we established some sufficient conditions so that every solution of (1.1) oscillate. This paper generalized the results in [11]. Some examples are considered to illustrate our main results.

An Embedded Data Using Slantlet Transform, Iman Mohammed Ga’Fer Alwan, Enas Muzaffer Al-Ta’Ee
Baghdad Science Journal
Data hiding is the process of encoding extra information in an image by making small modification to its pixels. To be practical, the hidden data must be perceptually invisible yet robust to common signal processing operations. This paper introduces a scheme for hiding a signature image that could be as much as 25% of the host image data and hence could be used both in digital watermarking as well as image/data hiding. The proposed algorithm uses orthogonal discrete wavelet transforms with two zero moments and with improved time localization called discrete slantlet transform for both host and signature image. A …
A Mathematical Approach For Computing The Linear Equivalence Of A Periodic Key-Stream Sequence Using Fourier Transform, Raghad Kadhim Salih, Atheer Jawad Kadhim
A Mathematical Approach For Computing The Linear Equivalence Of A Periodic Key-Stream Sequence Using Fourier Transform, Raghad Kadhim Salih, Atheer Jawad Kadhim
Baghdad Science Journal
A mathematical method with a new algorithm with the aid of Matlab language is proposed to compute the linear equivalence (or the recursion length) of the pseudo-random key-stream periodic sequences using Fourier transform. The proposed method enables the computation of the linear equivalence to determine the degree of the complexity of any binary or real periodic sequences produced from linear or nonlinear key-stream generators. The procedure can be used with comparatively greater computational ease and efficiency. The results of this algorithm are compared with Berlekamp-Massey (BM) method and good results are obtained where the results of the Fourier transform are …

Physics
Loss of Landau damping leading to a single bunch longitudinal instability has been observed in the LHC during the ramp and on the 3.5 TeV flat top for small injected longitudinal emittances. The first measurements are in reasonable agreement with the threshold calculated for the expected longitudinal reactive impedance budget of the LHC as well as with the threshold dependence on beam energy. The cure is a controlled longitudinal emittance blow-up during the ramp which for a constant threshold through the cycle should provide an emittance proportional to the square root of energy.

The Prediction Of The Electromagnetic Properties And The Ꟙ(E2/M1) Of 110-116cd-Isotopes In Ibm Model, Saddon Taha Ahmad, Diary Omar Kakil
Baghdad Science Journal
The Nuclear structure of 110-116Cd isotopes was studied theoretically in the framework of the interacting boson model of IBM-l and IBM-2. The properties of the lowest mixed symmetry states such as the 1+, 2+ and 3+ levels produced by the IBM-2 model in the vibrational-limit U(5) of Cd - isotopes are studied in details. This analysis shows that the character of mixed symmetry of 2+ is shared between and states in 110-114Cd – isotopes, the large shar goes to s, while in isotope, the state is declared as a mixed symmetry state without sharing. This identification is confirmed by the …

Semigroup Ideal In Prime Near-Rings With Derivations, Abdullrahman H. Majeed, Hiba A. Ahmed
Baghdad Science Journal
In this paper we generalize some of the results due to Bell and Mason on a near-ring N admitting a derivation D , and we will show that the body of evidence on prime near-rings with derivations have the behavior of the ring. Our purpose in this work is to explore further this ring like behavior. Also, we show that under appropriate additional hypothesis a near-ring must be a commutative ring.

Let R be a commutative ring with identity and M be a unitary R- module. We shall say that M is a primary multiplication module if every primary submodule of M is a multiplication submodule of M. Some of the properties of this concept will be investigated. The main results of this paper are, for modules M and N, we have M N and HomR (M, N) are primary multiplications R-modules under certain assumptions.
A Different Viewpoint On Student Retention, Watson Scott Swail
A Different Viewpoint On Student Retention, Watson Scott Swail
Higher Learning Research Communications
Although student retention, persistence, and graduation is a high priority for institutions and policymakers, graduation rates are not improving. Nowadays, more students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds have access to traditional higher education. In this essay, the author argues that an educational system that fails to prepare many students for higher education and the growing costs of attending college are making it more and more difficult for many students to persist and graduate. He concludes by stating that ultimately, we might need to decide, on a policy basis, who we want to go to college, who we want to succeed, …

The Effects Of Implementing Heterogeneous Writing Groups In A Fifth Grade Classroom, Jennifer Cady
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how heterogeneous grouping, particularly in writing, would impact the learning and social community in a fifth grade inclusion classroom. The students were given writing prompts that enforced the use of collaborative writing. Qualitative data was collected through the use of student artifacts, student surveys, student interviews, and a teacher researcher journal. After analyzing this data, it was revealed that heterogeneous writing groups can lead to improved writing amongst all students. It was also revealed that working collaboratively with peers led to a correlation with positive social interactions and constructive revelations from the …

We report far-infrared and submillimeter observations of supernova 1987A, the star whose explosion was observed on 23 February 1987 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy located 160,000 light years away. The observations reveal the presence of a population of cold dust grains radiating with a temperature of about 17 to 23 kelvin at a rate of about 220 times the luminosity of the Sun. The intensity and spectral energy distribution of the emission suggest a dust mass of about 0.4 to 0.7 times the mass of the Sun. The radiation must originate from the supernova ejecta and requires the …

We investigate the multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channel with channel distribution information available at the transmitter. the so-called fading-paper model is considered with Nt transmit antennas, and each user having Nr receive antennas. Near-optimal designs are proposed for the inflation factor matrix under general fading conditions, based on maximizing the approximation of linear assignment capacity. It is proved that for Nt ≤ Nr, this matrix has a similar structure and achieves a similar interference elimination effect as dirty-paper coding. Also, low complexity iterative algorithms are proposed for Nt > N r case, which yield a good choice for the inflation factor matrix …

On-chip cellular force sensors are fabricated from cantilever poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) filaments that visibly deflect under forces exerted at individual pseudopod-filament adhesive contacts. The shape of the deflected filaments and their ∼3 nN/μm spring constants are predicted by cantilever rod theory. Pulling forces exerted by Dictyostelium discoideumcells at these contacts are observed to reach ∼20 nN without breaking the contact.

Stochastically Resilient Observer Design For A Class Of Continuous-Time Nonlinear Systems, Chung Seop Jeong, Edwin E. Yaz, Yvonne I. Yaz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This work addresses the design of stochastically resilient or non-fragile continuous-time Luenberger observers for systems with incrementally conic nonlinearities. Such designs maintain the convergence and/or performance when the observer gain is erroneously implemented due possibly to computational errors i.e. round off errors in computing the observer gain or changes in the observer parameters during operation. The error in the observer gain is modeled as a random process and a common linear matrix inequality formulation is presented to address the stochastically resilient observer design problem for a variety of performance criteria. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.
