Combinatorial Catalysis Assisted By A Visible Enzymatic Beacon In Real Time: New Synthetically Versatile (Pseudo)Halometalation/Carbocyclizations, Jacob A. Friest, Sylvain Broussy, Woo Jin Chung, David B. Berkowitz

David Berkowitz Publications

Combinatorial approaches to catalysis have made an impact in targeted transformation development, including Ag-mediated carbene insertion,[1] Sc-pybox-based asymmetric cyclopropanation,[2] and Rh/Ir-based asymmetric hydrogenation.[3] Useful design elements have emerged from these studies, e.g. the value of ligand self assembly,[4] or of the inclusion of peptide-like structural elements[5],[6],[7] in building ligand arrays. Efficient screening methods are of paramount importance for such efforts. Methods based on fluorescence,[8] REMPI,[9] MS,[10] NMR,[11] and IR thermography[12] have appeared. A chromophore may be installed into the substrate[13] or product[14] of the reaction under study. Alternatively, …

Synthesis Of N-Acyl-N,O-Acetals From N-Aryl Amides And Acetals In The Presence Of Tmsotf, C. Wade Downey, Alan S. Fleisher, James T. Rague, Chelsea L. Safran, Megan E. Venable, Robert D. Pike Sep 2011

Synthesis Of N-Acyl-N,O-Acetals From N-Aryl Amides And Acetals In The Presence Of Tmsotf, C. Wade Downey, Alan S. Fleisher, James T. Rague, Chelsea L. Safran, Megan E. Venable, Robert D. Pike

Secondary amides undergo in situ silyl imidate formation mediated by TMSOTf and an amine base, followed by addition to acetal acceptors to provide N-acyl-N,O-acetals in good yields. An analogous, high-yielding reaction is observed with 2-mercaptothiazoline as the silyl imidate precursor. Competing reduction of the acetal to the corresponding methyl ether via transfer hydrogenation can be circumvented by the replacement of i-Pr2NEt with 2,6-lutidine under otherwise identical reaction conditions.

Wetting Transitions At Nanostructured Surfaces, Yazdi Jamileh Seyed Sep 2011

Wetting Transitions At Nanostructured Surfaces, Yazdi Jamileh Seyed

Theses and Dissertations

Shape of a droplet atop a surface heterogeneity at a nanoscale. Small aqueous droplets on homogeneous surfaces, surrounded by a reservoir of vapor are inherently unstable. In contact with supersaturated vapor, the drops will keep growing until they coalesce and form a contiguous aqueous phase. Alternatively, if vapor pressure is below that of the droplets, the droplets gradually evaporate. Departing from this common picture, when nanoscale droplets sit above hydrophilic patches on a heterogeneous surface, at certain conditions they can maintain a stable volume, determined by the pertinent contact angle and the size of the patches. Only the region under …

Understanding Formation And Transport Of Amorphous Iron Oxyhydroxides In Porous Media Using Microfluidic Flow Cells- A Novel Method To Study Freshwater Iron Cycling, Neha A. Ghaisas Sep 2011

Understanding Formation And Transport Of Amorphous Iron Oxyhydroxides In Porous Media Using Microfluidic Flow Cells- A Novel Method To Study Freshwater Iron Cycling, Neha A. Ghaisas

Master's Theses

The ground water and surface water interface (GSI or Hyporheic zone) is a spatially- and temporally-fluctuating biogeochemical transition zone connecting these two distinct hydrological components. The mixing zone is characterized by a near neutral pH, ambient temperature and a sharp oxygen concentration which in turn has deep impact on the iron cycling and thus the fate of contaminants in the water column. We constructed an experimental micromodel that to observe key processes that affect biogeochemical iron cycling in the fresh water interface zones where the oxic surface water mixes with Fe (II) rich underlying ground water. The flow cell was …

The "Human Mental State Multiple Realizability In Silicon Thesis" Is False: An Argument Against Computational Theories Of Consciousness, Matthew Stuart Piper Sep 2011

The "Human Mental State Multiple Realizability In Silicon Thesis" Is False: An Argument Against Computational Theories Of Consciousness, Matthew Stuart Piper

Theses

In this paper, I argue that all computational theories of consciousness (CTCs) fail. CTCs hold that the right kind of computation is sufficient for the instantiation of consciousness. Given the widely-recognized importance of his work, I will use David J. Chalmers’ Thesis of Computational Sufficiency as a paradigm case. I will argue that it fails for a reason that can be formalized as a general problem plaguing any CTC: the medium-independent properties (MIPs) constitutive of computational processes are insufficient to instantiate the medium-dependent properties (MDPs) constitutive of consciousness. MIPs, like graphemes, are properties whose causal role (e.g., symbolic meaning) does …

Early Magnetic B-Type Stars: X-Ray Emission And Wind Properties., L. Oskinova, H. Todt, Richard Ignace, J. Brown, J. Cassinelli, W.-R. Hamann

ETSU Faculty Works

We present a comprehensive study of X-ray emission by, and wind properties of, massive magnetic early B-type stars. Dedicated XMM–Newton observations were obtained for three early-type B-type stars, ξ1 CMa, V2052 Oph and ζ Cas, with recently discovered magnetic fields. We report the first detection of X-ray emission from V2052 Oph and ζ Cas. The latter is one the softest X-ray sources among the early-type stars, while the former is one of the X-ray faintest. The observations show that the X-ray spectra of our programme stars are quite soft with the bulk of X-ray emitting material having a temperature of …

Analyses Of Nocturnal Temperature Cooling-Rate Response To Historical Local-Scale Urban Land-Use/Land Cover Change, Winston T. L. Chow, Bohumil M. Svoma Sep 2011

Analyses Of Nocturnal Temperature Cooling-Rate Response To Historical Local-Scale Urban Land-Use/Land Cover Change, Winston T. L. Chow, Bohumil M. Svoma

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Urbanization affects near-surface climates by increasing city temperatures relative to rural temperatures [i.e., the urban heat island (UHI) effect]. This effect is usually measured as the relative temperature difference between urban areas and a rural location. Use of this measure is potentially problematic, however, mainly because of unclear ‘‘rural’’ definitions across different cities. An alternative metric is proposed—surface temperature cooling/warming rates—that directly measures how variations in land-use and land cover (LULC) affect temperatures for a specific urban area. In this study, the impact of local-scale (,1 km2 ), historical LULC change was examined on near-surface nocturnal meteorological station temperatures sited …

The Hard Truths Of The Easy Essays: The Crisis Of Modernity And The Social Vision Of Peter Maurin, Jim Wishloff Sep 2011

The Hard Truths Of The Easy Essays: The Crisis Of Modernity And The Social Vision Of Peter Maurin, Jim Wishloff

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

ABSTRACT The relevance of the ideas of Peter Maurin, the prophetic force behind the Catholic Worker movement in the 1930s, is reconsidered in light of the current convulsions in the global economy. Maurin’s critique of the bourgeois mind is examined and his vision of a social order rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church is presented. The implications of this for the proper conduct of enterprise are discussed. The economic activity of the world’s largest home builder, Habitat for Humanity, is brought forward as an illustration of the wisdom and practicality of Maurin’s teaching.

Theology Of The "Real Economy": Christian Economic Ethics In An Age Of Financialization, Charles A. Mcdaniel Jr. Sep 2011

Theology Of The "Real Economy": Christian Economic Ethics In An Age Of Financialization, Charles A. Mcdaniel Jr.

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

“Financialization” is a term that has come to describe the process by which economic activity shifts from the “real” production of goods and services to ever more complex forms of financial transacting. Religious critics of practices that led to the financial crisis admonish behaviors commonly associated with financialization, yet these criticisms offer incompletely articulated ideals of what constitutes real economic production from the perspective of their faith traditions. This paper contends that Christianity has the potential to transform the nature of finance and investment but only if theologians and ethicists provide more tangible definition to what is real in economic …

Magnetic Properties Of Ilmenite‐Hematite Single Crystals From The Ecstall Pluton Near Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Sarah J. Brownlee, Joshua M. Feinberg, Takeshi Kasama, Richard J. Harrison, Gary R. Scott, Paul R. Renne

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Paleomagnetic studies of the 91 Ma Ecstall pluton and other Cretaceous plutons of British Columbia imply large northward tectonic movements (>2000 km) may have occurred during the tectonic evolution of western North America. However, more recent studies have shown that the eastern edge of the Ecstall pluton experienced considerable mineralogical changes as younger Eocene plutons, such as the ∼58 Ma Quottoon Pluton, were emplaced along its margins. We investigated changes in the rock magnetic properties associated with this reheating event by examining isolated grains of intergrown ilmenite and hematite, the primary paleomagnetic recorder in the Ecstall pluton. Measurements of …

Multiwavelength Observations Of The Very High Energy Blazar 1es 2344+514, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Multiwavelength observations of the high-frequency-peaked blazar 1ES 2344+514 were performed from 2007 October to 2008 January. The campaign represents the first contemporaneous data on the object at very high energy (VHE, E >100 GeV) γ-ray, X-ray, and UV energies. Observations with VERITAS in VHE γ-rays yield a strong detection of 20σ with 633 excess events in a total exposure of 18.1 hr live time. A strong VHE γ-ray flare on 2007 December 7 is measured at F(>300 GeV) = (6.76 ± 0.62) × 10–11 photons cm–2 s–1, corresponding to 48% of the Crab Nebula flux. Excluding this flaring episode, …

Cluster Observations Of Bow Shock Energetic Ion Transport Through The Magnetosheath Into The Cusp, K. J. Trattner, S. M. Petrinec, S. A. Fuselier, K. Nykyri, E. Kronberg

Publications

The observation of energetic particles by polar orbiting satellites in the magnetospheric cusp resulted in a controversy about their source region. It has been suggested that these cusp energetic particles (CEP) with significant fluxes from magnetosheath energies up to several hundred keV/e are accelerated locally in the cusp by the turbulence found in cusp diamagnetic cavities (CDC). As an alternative to the local acceleration region, the quasi‐parallel shock is successful as a source region for CEP events. Energetic ions accelerated at the bow shock can be transported downstream and enter the cusp along newly reconnected field lines. Composition and energy …

Energy Spectrum Of Energetic Particles Accelerated By Shock Waves: From Focused Transport To Diffusive Acceleration, Pingbing Zuo, Ming Zhang, Konstantin V. Gamayunov, Hamid K. Rassoul, Xi Luo

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The focused transport equation (FTE) includes all the necessary physics for modeling the shock acceleration of energetic particles with a unified description of first-order Fermi acceleration, shock drift acceleration, and shock surfing acceleration. It can treat the acceleration and transport of particles with an anisotropic distribution. In this study, the energy spectrum of pickup ions accelerated at shocks of various obliquities is investigated based on the FTE. We solve the FTE by using a stochastic approach. The shock acceleration leads to a two-component energy spectrum. The low-energy component of the spectrum is made up of particles that interact with shock …

The threat of bioterrorism with smallpox and the broad use of vaccinia vectors for other vaccines have led to the resurgence in the study of vaccinia immunological memory. The importance of the role of CD4+ T cells in the control of vaccinia infection is well known. However, more CD8+ than CD4+ T cell epitopes recognized by human subjects immunized with vaccinia virus have been reported. This could be, in part, due to the fact that most of the studies that have identified human CD4+ specific protein-derived fragments or peptides have used IFN-γ production to evaluate vaccinia specific T cell responses. …

Chemistry

For organic semiconductors to find ubiquitous electronics applications, the development of new materials with high mobility and air stability is critical. Despite the versatility of carbon, exploratory chemical synthesis in the vast chemical space can be hindered by synthetic and characterization difficulties. Here we show that in silico screening of novel derivatives of the dinaphtho[2,3-b:2′2,3′2-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene semiconductor with high hole mobility and air stability can lead to the discovery of a new high-performance semiconductor. On the basis of estimates from the Marcus theory of charge transfer rates, we identified a novel compound expected to demonstrate a theoretic twofold improvement in mobility …

Are Symbolic Powers Highly Evolved?, Brian Harbourne, Craig Hunkeke

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Searching for structural reasons behind old results and conjectures of Chudnovksy regarding the least degree of a nonzero form in an ideal of fat points in PN, we make conjectures which explain them, and we prove the conjectures in certain cases, including the case of general points in P2. Our conjectures were also partly motivated by the Eisenbud-Mazur Conjecture on evolutions, which concerns symbolic squares of prime ideals in local rings, but in contrast we consider higher symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings.

Measurement Of The Elastic Tensor Of Smsco3 And Ndsc03 Using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy With Ab Initio Calculations, K. A. Pestka Ii, E. S. Scott, Y. Le Page

Faculty Publications

The complete elastic tensors of SmScO3 and NdScO3 were measured using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) in combination with ab-initio calculations. Measurement of the elastic tensor of these recently synthesized single crystal RE scandates is essential for understanding dynamic lattice applications including phonon confinement, strain induced thin film growth and superlattice construction. On average, the experimental elastic constants differed by less than 5% of the theoretical values, further validating the accuracy of modern ab-initio calculations as a means of estimating the initial elastic constants used in RUS measurements.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to implement dialogue journals into a fourth grade classroom to find out if they fostered a relationship between the teacher and students. Over the course of five weeks, students were each given a journal in which he/she would correspond with me. As a class, topics to write about were brainstormed. However, students were welcomed to write about any topic of their choice. Students were asked to write one journal entry per week. Journals were returned the following Monday morning with my response. Data collection consisted of pre-dialogue journal survey, anecdotal teacher notes, the dialogue …

Vision-Based Path Planning, Collision Avoidance, And Target Tracking For Unmanned Air And Ground Vehicles In Urban Environments, Huili Yu

Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned vehicle systems, specifically Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) have found potential use in both military and civilian applications. For many applications, unmanned vehicle systems are required to navigate in urban environments where obstacles with various types and sizes exist. The main contribution of this research is to offer vision-based path planning, collision avoidance, and target tracking strategies for Unmanned Air and Ground vehicles operating in urban environments. Two vision-based local-level frame mapping and planning techniques are first developed for Miniature Air Vehicles (MAVs). The techniques build maps and plan paths in the local-level frame of …
