Vlsi Design Methodology Based On A Parameterized Buffer Controller, Woohyung Chun Sep 2011

Vlsi Design Methodology Based On A Parameterized Buffer Controller, Woohyung Chun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis presents a VLSI design methodology utilizing a buffer-based data flow to reduce interconnect resources and to synchronize the data transfer between different processing elements (i.e. between processors / between a processor and a hardware logic). The buffer-based dataflow is a novel design representation suitable for implementing data-centric applications. Since the buffer-based dataflow isolates the functional execution and data transfer of each node by using parameterized buffer controllers, it is helpful for reducing overall design time and for increasing reconfigurability. We first propose a sharing methodology which reduces the buffer memory and the number of buses used in the …

Marx Without The Beard: A Critical History Of Spinozaï¾ S Role In The History Of Marxism, Harrison Fluss Sep 2011

Marx Without The Beard: A Critical History Of Spinozaï¾ S Role In The History Of Marxism, Harrison Fluss

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This paper investigates the theoretical relationship between Spinoza, classical Marxism, and the Marxisms of the twenth century. While Spinoza’s philosophy was itself a crucial component of Marxist philosophy, significant thinkers after Marx from East and West over-emphasized Spinoza’s materialism at the expense of the Hegelian roots of Marxism (one Soviet philosopher went so far as to say that Spinoza was Marx without the beard). Hegel’s return to Aristotle’s notion of final causality helped to supplement the mechanistic materialism of Spinoza’s, but this contribution was either neglected or rejected by the different currents of Soviet and structuralist Marxism.

Bergson And Levinas On The Time Of Art, Katherine Graham Sep 2011

Bergson And Levinas On The Time Of Art, Katherine Graham

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Emmanuel Levinas and Henri Bergson have two very different approaches to the topic of aesthetics. Yet both have made unique contributions to the philosophy of art, and, specifically, to questions surrounding the temporal nature of art. This project attempts to read these two thinkers together over the question of the time of art. In doing so, this paper aims to discover whether art has its own kind of time, distinct from both the objectively measurable time favored by science, and the variable, subjective time vividly described by both Levinas and Bergson. This exploration will also seek to discover what, if …

Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock Sep 2011

Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock

Theses

When selecting pigments from a large set for restorative inpainting, it can often be challenging to create a mixture that will provide an exact match to the original artwork under a range of viewing and illumination conditions. In this research, a prototype computer program was developed that will aid the user by providing a color match and paint recipe that exhibits minimal metamerism when compared to the original artwork. The Gamblin Conservation Colors, a set of 43 colorants specially formulated for inpainting, were characterized in terms of their optical properties, absorption and scattering, according to Kubelka-Munk turbid media theory. Formulations …

Geomathematical Characterisation Of The Mineralization Indicators: A Case Study From Tincova Magmatic Intrusion (Romania), George Tudor Sep 2011

Geomathematical Characterisation Of The Mineralization Indicators: A Case Study From Tincova Magmatic Intrusion (Romania), George Tudor

Studia UBB Geologia

Indicators of the hydrothermal mineralization in the Tincova Laramian intrusion were tested at the contact zone between the intrusive body and the metamorphic host rocks. The mineralization consists of Cu, Pb and Zn sulfides, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite in gangue of quartz, carbonates, feldspar, sericite or clay minerals, and includes areas of hydrothermal alteration or oxidation. Seventy-nine samples were analyzed and processed as two distinct populations. Geomathematical methods highlight the importance of factors such as the shape, sizes of the mineralized zones and geological processes involved in the ore genesis. Trend maps for Cu, Pb + Zn, and Ag interpolated …

Mobile Technology As A Tool For Enhancing Student Learning In Geosciences, Sam Matson

Mobile Learning Symposium

Incorporation of mobile technology into the post-secondary classroom is becoming increasingly common as universities seek to facilitate active, student-centered learning through rapid access to information, connect students with course content through social media, and evaluate digital alternatives to conventional instructor-student interaction. The m-Learning Scholars Program at Boise State University was initiated during the 2010 – 2011 academic year, and provides a venue for exploring the potential of mobile technology to enhance student learning in the geosciences. Through this program, 38 students in an introductory Earth History course for non-geoscience majors each purchased a subsidized handheld device (iPod touch) that they …

Efficient Graph Algorithms Based On Color Coding Method, Kun Wang Sep 2011

Efficient Graph Algorithms Based On Color Coding Method, Kun Wang

Student Theses and Dissertations

Graph theory is the study of graphs in theoretical computer science. Graphs are mathematical models used to describe pairwise relations between objects from a certain collection. Many practical problems can be modeled as graphs problems, so it is of great importance to develop efficient graph algorithms for different graph problems based on high-throughput data. In this work, we study several important bioinformatics problems which are modeled as problems on weighted graphs, bounded local tree-width graphs, bounded-degree graphs, or mixed graphs etc. We design very efficient algorithms based on the color-coding method for these graph problems. We also apply the idea …

Linear Obfuscation To Combat Symbolic Execution, Zhi Wang, Jiang Ming, Chunfu Jia, Debin Gao Sep 2011

Linear Obfuscation To Combat Symbolic Execution, Zhi Wang, Jiang Ming, Chunfu Jia, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Trigger-based code (malicious in many cases, but not necessarily) only executes when specific inputs are received. Symbolic execution has been one of the most powerful techniques in discovering such malicious code and analyzing the trigger condition. We propose a novel automatic malware obfuscation technique to make analysis based on symbolic execution difficult. Unlike previously proposed techniques, the obfuscated code from our tool does not use any cryptographic operations and makes use of only linear operations which symbolic execution is believed to be good in analyzing. The obfuscated code incorporates unsolved conjectures and adds a simple loop to the original code, …

High Order Finite Difference Methods With Subcell Resolution For Advection Equations With Stiff Source Terms, Wei Wang, Chi-Wang Shu, H.C. Yee, Björn Sjögreen Sep 2011

High Order Finite Difference Methods With Subcell Resolution For Advection Equations With Stiff Source Terms, Wei Wang, Chi-Wang Shu, H.C. Yee, Björn Sjögreen

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

A new high order finite-difference method utilizing the idea of Harten ENO subcell resolution method is proposed for chemical reactive flows and combustion. In reaction problems, when the reaction time scale is very small, e.g., orders of magnitude smaller than the fluid dynamics time scales, the governing equations will become very stiff. Wrong propagation speed of discontinuity may occur due to the underresolved numerical solution in both space and time. The present proposed method is a modified fractional step method which solves the convection step and reaction step separately. In the convection step, any high order shock-capturing method can be …
