Fundamental Solutions To The Fractional Heat Operator, Jacob Flores
Fundamental Solutions To The Fractional Heat Operator, Jacob Flores
Math Theses
In this thesis, we are interested in showing the existence of a fundamental solution to the fractional heat operator. The fractional heat operator is a nonlocal linear operator used to model the time evolution of anomalous diffusion processes whose applicability arises in a wide variety of fields in the physical sciences, engineering, economics, and finance. Fundamental solutions to a partial differential operator are a class of generalized solutions formulated with rich mathematical analysis grounded in classes of well-behaved smooth functions referred to as test functions and their continuous linear functionals referred to as distributions. A primary tool that we use …

Simulations Of Skyrmions And Merons, Ryan Friesen, Aidan Kirk, Tom Carroll, Xuemei Cheng
Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows
Skyrmions and merons are particle-like spin structures that are found in specific magnetic materials. Due to their stability and nanoscale size, these quasiparticles have been proposed as promising candidates for qubits in quantum computing applications. Our goal is to design materials that can host and stabilize these quasiparticles. Skyrmions and merons exist only under specific conditions, and the parameter space for these materials is vast. Thus, we use the simulation package MuMax3 to run simulations to test the viability of potential materials to simplify this search. We present on our simulations of these skyrmions and merons. This work was supported …

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant diversity, consistent with top-down control patterns where predator gains cause herbivore declines, enhancing crop outcomes. In grasslands and forests, increasing plant diversity was associated …

Background
In response to the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, a K–12 workforce development initiative was launched to embed microelectronics education across US school districts. To promote sustainability, the initiative employed a district-wide vertical alignment strategy that progressively integrates microelectronics content and engineering-related career experiences from kindergarten through high school. While vertical alignment is often used for curriculum planning, its broader potential as a systems-level strategy remains underexplored.
Purpose
This study investigated how vertical alignment functions within a K–12 engineering workforce development initiative, focusing on enablers/barriers toward expanding and sustaining integration efforts. The research questions addressed stakeholder experiences with the …

Radiation Effects On The Amd Versal Running An Automatic Modulation Classification Model, Allan D. Howe
Theses and Dissertations
With the recent increase of interest into artificial intelligence (AI), graphics processing units (GPUs) have been used as the main hardware architecture for AI computation. Because of their high power consumption and large size, it is necessary to consider other architectures to perform AI computing in outer-space where size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) are tightly constrained. One such architecture is the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Versal Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (ACAP), which can achieve acceptable AI throughput at a lower power and size compared to a GPU. As the Versal ACAP gets used in space applications, it is necessary …

We report reproducible magnetization anomalies appearing below room temperature in copper-doped apatite materials belonging to the LK-99 family synthesized via hydrothermal methods. These anomalies are observed consistently across samples prepared under comparable conditions. Although the extracted Mydosh parameter lies within the range often associated with vortex-glass behavior in superconductors, a detailed analysis of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, field dependence, and magnetic memory effects demonstrates that the observed phenomena are not related to superconductivity. Instead, the data are consistent with glassy magnetic freezing of interacting clusters. Compositional and structural analysis identifies covellite (CuS), one of the constituent phases in these multiphase …

Comparative Analysis Of Strain-To-Velocity Conversion Methods For Active-Source Das Data And Collocated Nodal Stations, Prajwal Panthi, Brady R. Cox
Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) provides dense spatial measurements of the dynamic strain along fiber optic cables, offering high-resolution wave sensing for ground motion monitoring and subsurface imaging applications. However, DAS records the axial strain or strain rate, whereas traditional seismic and engineering ground motion equipment and derived metrics are based on particle displacement, velocity, or acceleration, necessitating reliable strain-to-velocity conversion methods. This study evaluates three widely used conversion approaches: the fk-rescaling, curvelet-based conversion, and slant-stack methods. These approaches are applied to a unique high-energy, near-field, active-source dataset collected at the Birds Landing Site in Sherman Island, California. The dataset includes …

Early childhood education is inextricably linked to the role of adults in every aspect of its process. In addition to formal classroom learning, storytelling with a storyteller is another activity that involves adults. The dialogic interaction between storyteller and children fosters the creation of meaning. This study examines how storytelling, as an interactional practice, can dynamically construct meaning together between storyteller and children. Sixty-one kindergarten children participated in this study during a one and half hour storytelling activity. The qualitative and interactional approach used in this study focused on moment-to-moment exchanges during the naturally occurring storytelling event. The findings indicate …

Exposing The Wizard Of Oz: Transparency And Testing Of Artificial Intelligence Systems, Henry H. Perritt
Journal of Science & Technology Law
The press and media, elected officials, some high-tech entrepreneurs, and a new breed of “ethicists” are calling loudly for governments to regulate artificial intelligence (“AI”), especially generative AI, popularized by ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Much of the clamor is ill-informed about the technology and based on exaggerated concerns about its risks. Nevertheless, the pressure for regulation is real and is already evoking governmental responses. Transparency requirements are far better than command-and-control regulation. The technology is far too new, however, for any form of command-and-control regulation. Would-be regulators need to take a deep breath and sit back for a while to …

Development Of Computational Imaging Pipelines To Advance Virtual Pet Imaging Trials, Suya Li
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Positron emission tomography (PET) provides functional information that is essential for disease diagnosis, treatment assessment, and biomedical research. However, the development and validation of PET imaging methods often require simulated imaging data with known ground truth, as well as large clinical datasets that are realistic and scalable. These requirements are difficult to satisfy using clinical studies alone, motivating the development of virtual PET imaging techniques. Physics-based simulation can model PET acquisition with high accuracy, but its computational cost limits its large-scale usage. Meanwhile, conventional digital phantom-based image generation approaches often lack the anatomical diversity and heterogeneous tracer uptake patterns observed …

Talking Teaching For Change: How Productive Teacher Collaborations Contribute To Teacher Efficacy Beliefs And Student Achievement Gains, Xiaohang Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Teacher collaboration and teacher efficacy beliefs are complex, multifaceted constructs that play critical roles in student learning and influence one another in multiple ways. School collaborative culture, including collegial trust, collective learning, and shared responsibility, has also been identified as an important factor shaping both effective teacher collaboration and teacher efficacy beliefs. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to (a) examine the relationships between features of collaborative discourse and teachers' instructional efficacy beliefs, as well as the extent to which school type and school collaborative culture influence these relationships, and (b) explore how these collaborative discourse features are …

Global biogeochemical models are powerful tools used to interpret observations and empirical data, create hypotheses, and make predictions. Many of these models, however, represent marine microbes as static stoichiometric reactions that convert nutrients into biomass. To better constrain the biological processes that control nutrient cycling in the global ocean, we extend the Cell Flux Model of Phytoplankton to explore the impact of dissolved iron concentration on the allocation of macromolecules and elemental ratios within phytoplankton cells. This model is supported by data obtained from a range of incubation experiments conducted with phytoplankton of varying species and size categories. Model output …

The papers in this Research Topic (RT) extend insights on the roles of social relations, institutional arrangements, Indigenous ways of knowing, local knowledge, and decisionmaking participation in shaping water governance and practice. Despite efforts to predict flows and possible hazards, we continue to observe “unintended consequences” when humans interact with waterscapes. What we often learn, we argue, is that what appears “unintended” often reflects a deliberate architecture of exclusion; one that becomes legible only when social power relations are placed at the center of analysis alongside hydrological variables. Doing so may illuminate where injustice complicates intentions and what difference participatory …

This paper proposes to solve the challenge of making databases more user-friendly by interfacing them with OpenAI's ChatGPT-3.5 model. We implemented this solution to assist researchers in easily finding others with similar research interests. Our study involves 184 researchers from 14 departments at Southern Methodist University (SMU). We collected researchers' areas of expertise and biographies and stored them in a Neo4j graph database. We used OpenAI's embedding models to create vector representations of the collected data, allowing for accurate similarity assessments via Neo4j's built-in algorithms. By integrating this system with LangChain, we enabled natural language queries. The results demonstrated high …

Stylometric And Formal Patterns In The Scholarly Impact Of Scientific Literature, Joshua Ange, Eric Godat, Rajani Sudan
SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research
Scientific communication is typically tied to promoting public engagement and interest in science, increasing scientific literacy, and playing an essential role in policymaking. The success of public communication of scientific findings is largely associated with secondary characteristics of research (e.g. the style of writing and presentation), rather than the primary content or research quality. But it is unclear to what extent the success of scientific literature intended for working scientists is influenced by those same secondary characteristics. Does the writing style of scientific articles impact their success in academic spheres? In this study, we explore the stylometric and formal characteristics …

Given a presentation $\mathcal{P}=\langle X|R\rangle $ of the group $G$ and an equation $e\in G*\langle t \rangle$, we define a solution to a van Kampen diagram over the presentation $\mathcal{P}_e=\langle X\cup\{t\}|R\cup\{e\}\rangle$. We prove that $e$ is solvable over $G$ exactly when every diagram over $\mathcal{P}_e$ has a solution.
