Some Like It Hot: The Influence And Implications Of Climate Change On Coffee Berry Borer (Hypothenemus Hampei) And Coffee Production In East Africa, Juliana Jaramillo, Eric Muchugu, Fernando E. Vega, Aaron Davis, Christian Borgemeister, Adenirin Chabi-Olaye Sep 2011

Some Like It Hot: The Influence And Implications Of Climate Change On Coffee Berry Borer (Hypothenemus Hampei) And Coffee Production In East Africa, Juliana Jaramillo, Eric Muchugu, Fernando E. Vega, Aaron Davis, Christian Borgemeister, Adenirin Chabi-Olaye

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The negative effects of climate change are already evident for many of the 25 million coffee farmers across the tropics and the 90 billion dollar (US) coffee industry. The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei), the most important pest of coffee worldwide, has already benefited from the temperature rise in East Africa: increased damage to coffee crops and expansion in its distribution range have been reported. In order to anticipate threats and prioritize management actions for H. hampei we present here, maps on future distributions of H. hampei in coffee producing areas of East Africa. Using the CLIMEX model we relate …

Mechanism Behind The Switching Of Current Induced By A Gate Field In A Semiconducting Nanowire Junction, Subhasish Mandal, Ranjit Pati Sep 2011

Mechanism Behind The Switching Of Current Induced By A Gate Field In A Semiconducting Nanowire Junction, Subhasish Mandal, Ranjit Pati

Department of Physics Publications

We propose an orbital-controlled model to explain the gate field induced switching of current in a semiconducting PbS-nanowire junction. A single-particle scattering formalism in conjunction with a posteriori density-functional approach involving a hybrid functional is used to study the electronic current; both first- and higher-order Stark effects are explicitly treated in our model. Our calculation reveals that after a threshold gate voltage, orbital mixing produces p components at the S atoms in the participating orbitals. This results in an interlayer orbital interaction that allows electrons to delocalize along the channel axis. As a consequence, a higher conductance state is found. …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Spatiotemporal Processes: A Case Study Of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Multiple Sclerosis, Russell T. Shinohara, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian S. Caffo, Daniel S. Reich Sep 2011

Longitudinal Analysis Of Spatiotemporal Processes: A Case Study Of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Multiple Sclerosis, Russell T. Shinohara, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian S. Caffo, Daniel S. Reich

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease in which inflammatory lesions form in the brain. In many active MS lesions, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is disrupted and blood flows into white matter; this disruption may be related to morbidity and disability. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) allows quantitative study of blood flow and permeability dynamics throughout the brain. This technique involves a subject being imaged sequentially during a study visit as an intravenously administered contrast agent flows into the brain. In regions where flow is abnormal, such as white matter lesions, this allows the quantification of the BBB damage. …

Meso-Circulation Associated With Summer Convection Over The Central Antilles, Mark Jury, Sen Chiao Sep 2011

Meso-Circulation Associated With Summer Convection Over The Central Antilles, Mark Jury, Sen Chiao

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

The mesoscale structure of the circulation and convection over central Caribbean Antilles islands in midsummer is analyzed. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent over islands such as Hispaniola and Jamaica as confluent trade winds circulate over heated mountainous topography. Observational data from a rain gauge network, profiles from aircraft and radiosonde, satellite estimates of rainfall, and mesoscale reanalysis fields are studied with a focus on July 2007. A statistical decomposition of 3-hourly high-resolution satellite rainfall reveals an “island mode” with afternoon convection. Trade winds pass over the mountains of Hispaniola and Jamaica with a Froude number <1, leading to a long meandering wake. The Weather Research and Forecasting model is used to simulate climatic conditions during July 2007. The model correctly locates areas of diurnal rainfall that develop because of island heat fluxes, confluent sea breezes, and mountain wakes.

Abstract

: Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating of hard tissue implants is widely employed for its biocompatible and osteoconductive properties as well as its improved mechanical properties. Plasma technology is the principal deposition process for coating HA on bioactive metals for this application. However, thermal decomposition of HA can occur during the plasma deposition process, resulting in coating variability in terms of purity, uniformity and crystallinity, which can lead to implant failure caused by aseptic loosening. In this study, CoBlast™, a novel blasting process has been used to successfully modify a titanium (V) substrate with a HA treatment using a dopant/abrasive regime. …

Online Ams Frontend Reconfiguration For Sensor Network Applications And Other Continuously Changing Environments, Pengbo Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis proposes a novel online analog and mixed-signal (AMS) frontend reconfiguration approach for sensor network applications and other continuously changing environments. The approach is based on a design point (DP) selection algorithm. The algorithm has two steps: DP sampling and DP pruning. This thesis also proposes a systematic methodology for reconfigurable ∆Σ modulator topology designs. The system software of traditional embedded system optimizes the allocation of a fixed set of resources under static conditions. However, the functionality and performance constraints of data processing systems are far less predictable since the characteristics of the monitored environment are continuously changing. In …

Solutions To Quasi-Relativistic Multi-Configurative Hartree-Fock Equations In Quantum Chemistry, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard Sep 2011

Solutions To Quasi-Relativistic Multi-Configurative Hartree-Fock Equations In Quantum Chemistry, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard

Articles

We establish existence of infinitely many distinct solutions to the multi-configurative Hartree-Fock type equations for N-electron Coulomb systems with quasi-relativistic kinetic energy for the n th electron. Finitely many of the solutions are interpreted as excited states of the molecule. Moreover, we prove existence of a ground state. The results are valid under the hypotheses that the total charge Z of K nuclei is greater than N-1 and that Z is smaller than a critical charge. The proofs are based on a new application of the Lions-Fang-Ghoussoub critical point approach to nonminimal solutions on a complete analytic Hilbert-Riemann manifold.

The Pulled-Macro-Dataflow Model: An Execution Model For Multicore Shared-Memory Computers, Daniel Joseph Richins Sep 2011

The Pulled-Macro-Dataflow Model: An Execution Model For Multicore Shared-Memory Computers, Daniel Joseph Richins

Theses and Dissertations

The macro-dataflow model of execution has been used in scheduling heuristics for directed acyclic graphs. Since this model was developed for the scheduling of parallel applications on distributed computing systems, it is inadequate when applied to the multicore shared-memory computers prevalent in the market today. The pulled-macro-dataflow model is put forth as an alternative to the macro-dataflow model, having been designed specifically to accurately describe the memory bandwidth limitations and request-driven nature of communications characteristic of today's machines. The performance of the common scheduling heuristics DSC and CASS-II are evaluated under the pulled-macro-dataflow model and it is shown that their …

Early Maladaptive Schemas And Negative Life Events In The Prediction Of Depression And Anxiety, Lindsay Anmuth Sep 2011

Early Maladaptive Schemas And Negative Life Events In The Prediction Of Depression And Anxiety, Lindsay Anmuth

Theses and Dissertations

This study tested the relationships between Young's (1990, 2003) model of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs), negative life events occurring over the past 4 months, depressive symptoms, and anxious symptoms. We also replicated a design testing the ability of EMSs, negative life events, and their interaction to predict depressive and anxious symptoms and extended the design to include specific categories of negative life events (interpersonal and achievement). Results of this study showed that EMSs are predictive of depressive and anxious symptoms, but that negative life events account for a greater prediction. The EMS model was just as highly associated with and …

Accurate Interaction Energies For Problematic Dispersion-Bound Complexes: Homogeneous Dimers Of Nccn, P2, And Pccp, Edward G. Hohenstein, Heather M. Jaeger, Emily J. Carrell, Gregory S. Tschumper, C. David Sherrill Sep 2011

Accurate Interaction Energies For Problematic Dispersion-Bound Complexes: Homogeneous Dimers Of Nccn, P2, And Pccp, Edward G. Hohenstein, Heather M. Jaeger, Emily J. Carrell, Gregory S. Tschumper, C. David Sherrill

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

All intermolecular interactions involve London dispersion forces. The accurate treatment of dispersion is essential for the computation of realistic interaction potentials. In general, the most reliable method for computing intermolecular interactions is coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] in conjunction with a sufficiently flexible Gaussian atomic orbital basis set, a combination which is not routinely applicable due to its excessive computational demands (CPU time, memory, storage). Recently, many theoretical methods have been developed that attempt to account for dispersion in a more efficient manner. It is well-known that dispersion interactions are more difficult to compute in some systems …

Efficient And Accurate Methods For The Geometry Optimization Of Water Clusters: Application Of Analytic Gradients For The Two-Body:Many-Body Qm:Qm Fragmentation Method To (H2o)N, N = 3-10, Desiree M. Bates, Joshua R. Smith, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The structures of more than 70 low-lying water clusters ranging in size from (H2O)3 to (H2O)10 have been fully optimized with several different quantum mechanical electronic structure methods, including second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) in conjunction with correlation consistent triple-ζ basis sets (aug-cc-pVTZ for O and cc-pVTZ for H, abbreviated haTZ). Optimized structures obtained with less demanding computational procedures were compared to the MP2/haTZ ones using both MP2/haTZ single point energies and the root-mean-square (RMS) deviations of unweighted Cartesian coordinates. Based on these criteria, B3LYP/6-31+G(d,2p) substantially outperforms both HF/haTZ and MP2/6-31Gz.ast. B3LYP/6-31+G(d,2p) structures never …
