Bp-Kan-Based Inversion Imaging For Borehole Resistivity Method And Its Application, Xu Zhongzhong, Yin Longlong, Cheng Jiulong, Xu Jinpeng, Lu Cunjin, Zhao Hongpeng
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective In the monitoring of coal seam mining-induced deformation and failure of surrounding rocks, the borehole resistivity method stands out due to its capacity for dynamic, three-dimensional (3D) full-space measurements. However, conventional resistivity inversion for the method is generally carried out using the least squares algorithm, leading to limited accuracy in practical engineering. In recent years, neural network-based inversion has demonstrated the potential for addressing this challenge, while its performance is yet to be further improved. Methods In this context, inversion imaging based on a back propagation-Kolmogorov-Arnold network (BP-KAN) was proposed for the borehole resistivity method, aiming to accurately monitor …

Three-Dimensional, Collaborative Detection Approach For Fire Zones In Shallowly Buried Coal Seams And Its Application, Fan Kaixiang, Hu Xiangming, Hong Haibo, Dong Hao, Yu Shijian, Wei Zhengrong, Guo Yongxiang
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Fire zones in shallowly buried coal seams have long restricted safe and efficient coal mining due to their considerably hidden and hazardous nature. However, individual methods for fire source detection are susceptible to geological conditions and ambient noise, suffering from limited detection dimensions and the presence of technical blind spots. Therefore, they fail to accurately localize hidden fire sources in shallow coal seams. Methods This study proposes a three-dimensional, collaborative multi-source detection approach that combines the self-potential (SP) method, the radon measurement (Rn) method, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT; also referred to as high-density resistivity method), and the transient electromagnetic …

Design Of An Intelligent Failure Diagnosis And Early Warning System For Tunnel Drilling Rigs In Coal Mines, Song Haitao, Zhang Naiwen, Han Jian, Wu Min
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective In coal mines, harsh environments and complex geological conditions underground lead to frequent failures of tunnel drilling rigs. However, conventional techniques for failure diagnosis and early warning suffer from limitations in diagnostic accuracy, real-time performance, and interpretability. Therefore, these techniques are insufficient for both the rapid identification of the anomalous status of tunnel drilling rigs and the early warning of their potential failures. Methods Considering the complex underground environments in coal mines, this study developed an intelligent failure diagnosis and early warning system for tunnel drilling rigs in coal mines, placing a particular emphasis on key technologies for failure …

Research Progress On Effect Of Salt On Pickling Vegetable Quality, Qi Kai, Li Ziyan, Cheng Wenbo, Fan Mingcong, Zuo Daoxi, Li Yan, Wang Li, Zhang Wenbin
Food and Machinery
Vegetable pickling is a time-honored food preservation and processing method, in which salt (primarily sodium chloride) plays an irreplaceable and core role. This paper systematically reviews the multidimensional effects of curing salt on vegetable quality. It comprehensively covers preservation mechanisms, textural transformations, the formation and conversion of flavor compounds, color stability, and nutritional value changes. Specifically, this article analyzes the decisive role of salt concentration gradients in final product characteristics. Furthermore, it examines the challenges posed by the low salinity, including microbial safety risks, textural deterioration, and flavor imbalances, while proposing corresponding strategies.

Discovery And Implications For Ore Prospecting Of Gravitational Gliding Structures In The Lutang Coal-Based Graphite Mining Area, Hunan Province, China, Xiao Jincheng, Lu Jiang, Liu Zhiyu, Zhu Linying, Xiao Haibin, Li Long, Xiao Jing
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background Data from previous exploration and studies indicate that the Lutang coal-based graphite mining area in Hunan Province falls within the Lutang-Shatian synclinorium in terms of tectonic location, with coal-bearing strata dominated by the upper member of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation. Influenced by the intrusion of granites, coal seams adjacent to the Qitianling pluton on the eastern flank of the mining area have undergone contact metamorphism, forming coal-based graphite. Previous exploration results suggest that the Qitianling pluton has a maximum burial depth measured at an elevation of 0 m or less. However, with constant underground exposure in mines, previous …

Co2 Fracturing Stimulation Technology For Low-Yield Directional Coalbed Methane Wells And Its Applications, Zhang Junsheng, Cao Yunxing, Wang Li, Wang Zhongbin, Yang Baige, Shi Bin, Cao Yongsen, Xu Fengyi
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background In China, low-yield coalbed methane (CBM) wells represent a high proportion of approximately 57% (over 12400 wells), generally encountering challenges such as low pressure, dry reservoirs, and near-wellbore formation damage and blockage. Conventional hydraulic fracturing is prone to induce water blocking damage, while treatments such as acidification offer only limited blockage-removing radii. Therefore, existing techniques are insufficient to achieve blockage removal and permeability enhancement while avoiding reservoir damage. Exploring efficient waterless stimulation technologies suitable for these low-yield wells is of great significance for increasing CBM production and advancing the CBM industry. Methods This study investigated directional wells PXC-03 and …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Significant breakthroughs have been achieved in the exploration of bauxite gas reservoirs in the Taiyuan Formation, Longdong area, Ordos Basin. Bauxites are generally considered to hold great helium generation potential due to their relatively high uranium (U) and thorium (Th) contents. However, there remains a lack of quantitative studies on their actual contribution to helium abundance in natural gas in the area. Methods To determine dominant helium source rocks and mechanisms behind helium enrichment, this study investigated the bauxite gas reservoirs within the Taiyuan Formation in the Longdong area. Through analyses of the composition, carbon isotopes, and noble gas …

Assessing Fault-Induced Floor Water Inrushes Based On Improved Water Inrush Coefficients, Jiao Bin, Tan Wenfeng, Li Hongsheng, Chen Juntao, Gao Hongbing, Zhao Zizhang, Wu Fangcan
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background As coal mining in mines constantly expands to greater depths, water hazards in the Ordovician limestone aquifers of coal seam floors pose a serious threat to the mining of coal seams in lower formations. Fault reactivation represents a primary factor inducing water inrushes. However, the original water inrush coefficient (T = p/M) suffers from certain limitations when used to assess the water inrushes in areas with faults. Methods Four models of floor water inrushes induced by non-penetrating faults (i.e., concealed hydraulically conductive faults, concealed isolated faults, and exposed faults) and penetrating faults were constructed, and …

Numerical Simulations And Dispersion Analysis Of 3d In-Seam Waves Based On Finite Difference Method On Curvilinear Grids, Liu Dan, Ren Zhiming
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background With the comprehensive advancement in intelligent coal mine construction, creating high-precision, transparent geological models of coal seams and their surrounding strata has emerged as a prerequisite for intelligent coal mining. The accurate identification of concealed geological anomalies, such as folds and faults, within coal seams represents a key challenge in safe coal mining. In-seam seismic exploration has become an important approach to detecting underground concealed structures owing to its advantages, including a considerable detection distance along coal seams, high precision, pronounced frequency dispersion effects, and facilitating the identification of waveform signatures. However, conventional methods for seam wave simulation are …

Water quality analysis plays an essential role in maintaining the health and sustainability of river ecosystems, especially in semi-arid regions like the Arroyo Colorado Watershed in South Texas. Since the river is a vital source of water supply for local communities, agriculture, and wildlife, it faces significant challenges and pollution from land use changes, climate variation, and agricultural runoff. Continuous monitoring and assessment of water quality parameters and their temporal variability are essential to ensure the drinking water supply and aquatic ecosystem health. However, comprehensive laboratory-based water quality investigations are often constrained by higher costs, logistical complexity, and limited manpower. …
An Infinite Number Of Roads Diverged In A Wood: Robert Heinlein’S Maximalist Road Trip In The Number Of The Beast, Patrick Julian
An Infinite Number Of Roads Diverged In A Wood: Robert Heinlein’S Maximalist Road Trip In The Number Of The Beast, Patrick Julian
Mythcon
Robert Heinlein, Grand Master of Speculative Fiction, was born in Butler, MO (one hour north of Route 66), raised in Kansas City, and lived much of his early adult life in Los Angeles, the westernmost terminus of Route 66. Given this proximity to the Mother Road, it’s no surprise that Heinlein spent a considerable portion of his career writing about various versions of the Road Trip, whether it was taken via foot, horse-drawn carriage, automobile or spaceship. The Roads Must Roll, his 3rd published short story (1940), name checks Route 66, while many of his early works of juvenile …

Museums are a vital source of educational resources for the general public. They provide information on a variety of topics and disciplines and encourage visitors to be excited about and engaged in learning something new. As we work to comprehend key topics such as climate change, it is especially important for the broader public to better understand science, including geology. While the geological collection at Ursinus, Pieces of Earth’s History, is not in a museum, implementing methods that museums use can improve the reception of the collection. Through the application of research gathered through articles, journals, books, and talking with …
Can Machines Testify? Llms And The Boundaries Of Testimonial Epistemology, Michael J. Cummins
Can Machines Testify? Llms And The Boundaries Of Testimonial Epistemology, Michael J. Cummins
Philosophy Summer Fellows
As Large Language Models and AI chatbots become increasingly prevalent, pressing questions are raised about whether beliefs formed through LLM interactions carry the same epistemic weight as beliefs formed through human testimony. How we answer this question depends on whether LLMs can function as testifiers, a role which is typically assumed to require a human or human-like agent. This assumption has gone largely unexamined, yet its consequences are significant: if LLM outputs cannot constitute testimony, then the justificatory tools of testimonial epistemology are unavailable to any beliefs formed through LLM interaction. This paper challenges that assumption. It first argues that …
Identity-Dependent Externalities Can Mitigate Overbidding In Tullock Contests: Theory And Evidence, Dan Kovenock, Jian Song, Francesco Trevisan
Identity-Dependent Externalities Can Mitigate Overbidding In Tullock Contests: Theory And Evidence, Dan Kovenock, Jian Song, Francesco Trevisan
ESI Working Papers
We investigate how identity-dependent externalities infuence bidding behavior in Tullock lottery contests. While experimental studies of standard contests, in which losers are indiferent to the winner’s identity, consistently document overbidding, the role of identity-dependent preferences remains less explored. We address this gap by frst showing that the class of three-player Tullock lottery contests with identity-dependent externalities considered here can be mapped into a standard Tullock lottery contest with appropriately chosen prize valuations and endowments, yielding identical Nash equilibrium predictions. We then use this mapping to design a laboratory experiment that directly compares the two “equilibrium-equivalent” contest formats. In our three-player …

Whole-Life Carbon–Cost–Circularity Optimization For Ai-Era Data Centers: A Robust Multi-Objective Framework Under Carbon Pricing Uncertainty, Arezou Shafaghat, Da Hu, Ali Keyvanfar
Faculty Articles
The explosive growth of artificial intelligence workloads has triggered unprecedented data center construction, yet environmental assessment remains focused on operational energy efficiency. This paper introduces DC-WLC3O, a framework that simultaneously optimizes three objectives across the full data center lifecycle: whole-life cost, whole-life carbon, and material circularity index. The framework integrates cradle-to-cradle lifecycle assessment with dynamic material flow analysis, employing a four-layer analytical stack: Monte Carlo simulation with Latin Hypercube Sampling and Iman–Conover rank correlation; NSGA-III tri-objective Pareto optimization; Sobol’ variance-based global sensitivity analysis; and Many-Objective Robust Decision Making (MORDM). The framework evaluates 192 design configurations for a 30 MW hyperscale …

Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee
Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Entity-aware document retrieval uses query-associated entities as ranking signals, assuming that semantically relevant entities are also useful retrieval signals. We show this assumption is insufficient - and explain why. Unlike terms, which are ground-truth observations, entity links are hypotheses produced by an imperfect linker: an entity can be topically central yet provide no discriminative signal if the linker fires indiscriminately across relevant and non-relevant documents. We formalize this as a distinction between Conceptual Entity Relevance (CER) - whether an entity is topically related to a query - and Observable Entity Relevance (OER) - whether its observed presence in a collection …
Who Do You Think You’Re Talking To? A Longitudinal Study Of How Disclosed Partner Identity Shapes Relational Communication With Ai Among College Students, Vito Anthony Borio
Who Do You Think You’Re Talking To? A Longitudinal Study Of How Disclosed Partner Identity Shapes Relational Communication With Ai Among College Students, Vito Anthony Borio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This study presents a longitudinal, two-condition, between-subjects experiment in which partner identity is disclosed as either human or AI in text-based chat; however, all participants (N = 60) interacted with the same chatbot. Informed by both Social Information Processing Theory (SIPT; Walther, 1995) and the Computers Are Social Actors Paradigm (CASA; Nass & Moon, 2000), this design draws on the former’s longitudinal measurement tradition to empirically test whether its predictions hold, using the latter as both a framework and procedure for investigating chatbot interactions. The findings inform both theories, indicating that perceived partner identity significantly affects perceptions of relational …

Design And Structural Architecture Of A Non-Equilibrium Hydrothermal Liquefaction Reactor Utilizing Multi-Stage Wave-Field Catalysis And Fluidized Acoustic Boundary Transport, Christopher L. Eckes
Design And Structural Architecture Of A Non-Equilibrium Hydrothermal Liquefaction Reactor Utilizing Multi-Stage Wave-Field Catalysis And Fluidized Acoustic Boundary Transport, Christopher L. Eckes
Defensive Publications Series
This technical design paper presents the formalized architecture for a continuous-flow, process-intensified Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) system designed to convert heterogeneous, highly viscous organic waste streams—such as municipal sewage sludge, microplastics, and halogenated industrial wastes—into drop-in synthetic biocrude and valuable chemical fractions.
Legacy HTL systems suffer from severe, interlocking mechanical liabilities: thermal boundary-layer coking, flow stagnation, extreme chloride/fluoride corrosion, and rapid catalytic deactivation via structural sintering. This architecture systematically bypasses these limits by abandoning static reactor geometry and internal dynamic mechanical components.
The physical configuration relies on a vertical, gravity-assisted cascade of high-pressure, un-equilibrated spherical reaction vessels constructed from high-performance alloys …

Mapping Media Literacy Assessment: A Systematic Review To Connect The Dots, Lara Azar, Casey Frechette, Hafsa Zia, Joy Amulya
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The goal of this study was to address persistent challenges in assessing media literacy by reviewing assessments developed between 2011 and 2020. We combined landscape analysis, research synthesis, and grounded theory to select assessments, identify key attributes, iteratively code, analyze, and create an integrated synthesis of approaches to media literacy assessments. The analysis classified media literacy constructs by learning dimension (knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors) and participation mode (consumption, engagement, creation). The results showed that while most assessments focused on consumption-oriented constructs, engagement- and creation-oriented constructs were also included. Assessments primarily served three research purposes: evaluating media literacy levels in populations, …

This paper offers a theoretical reflection on the evolving landscape of automated media, focusing on how automation and so-called Artificial Intelligence (AI) are reshaping traditional media-related practices and the competences required for media literacy. It examines how automated media technologies, such as recommendation algorithms and generative AI, might reshape the critical skills necessary to navigate a complex digital ecosystem. By framing AI-driven media practices through a social-action perspective and treating media as human activities, we argue that media literacy models should encompass competences related to the operation of computational automata, particularly through the management of inbound and outbound information flows. …
