Temperature Dependence Of Metal-Organic Heteroepitaxy, Geoffrey Rojas, Xumin Chen, Donna A. Kunkel, Matthias Bode, Axel Enders Oct 2011

Temperature Dependence Of Metal-Organic Heteroepitaxy, Geoffrey Rojas, Xumin Chen, Donna A. Kunkel, Matthias Bode, Axel Enders

Axel Enders Publications

The nucleation and growth of 2D layers of tetraphenyl porphyrin molecules on Ag(111) are studied with variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The organic/metal heteroepitaxy occurs by strict analogy to established principles for metal heteroepitaxy. A hierarchy of energy barriers for diffusion on terraces and along edges and around corners of adislands is established. The temperature is key to activating these barriers selectively, thus determining the shape of the organic aggregates, from a fractal shape at lower temperatures to a compact shape at higher temperatures. The energy barriers for the terrace diffusion of porpyrins and the molecule-molecule binding energy were determined to …

The Kali Yuga And Camus’ The Plague, Shantanu Jain '12 Oct 2011

The Kali Yuga And Camus’ The Plague, Shantanu Jain '12

2011 Fall Semester

Hinduism is a religion in which scientific observations play an important role. Through extensive observation of astronomical phenomena, Hindu cosmologists created a calendar based on the relative positions of planets to the moon. This calendar played an important role understanding the Hindu cycle of the creation and destruction of the universe. This cycle is referred to as the cycle of the Yugas, in which the increasingly vice-ridden world is destroyed and replaced with a morally and religiously pristine one. Camus’ The Plague explores this cycle of human malice and immorality, which is corrected by natural or supernatural forces as an …

Facial Transplantation: The Last Hope For “Monsters”, Lily Lou '13

2011 Fall Semester

For these past two hundred years I have been living in utter seclusion from the rest of humanity. Life would have lost its meaning long ago were it not for a divine occurrence. I happened to pass through a gargantuan athenaeum of sorts and I whiled my hours away devouring the intellectual delights that lay within. I read several books on a compelling issue, and one that seems to be novel, unheard-of and that has seemed to stir up quite a controversy. The issue is the surgical operation of face transplants on humans. From what I have read, a face …

Human Duplication: Miracle?, Henry Ward '13 Oct 2011

Human Duplication: Miracle?, Henry Ward '13

2011 Fall Semester

My creator tossed me into this world with little semblance of foresight, displaying the recklessness of a prodigal child too blinded by his own misled intelligence to realize the implications of his path. Perhaps – nay, certainly – he owed it to his creation to have taken more time in the consideration of my being before the deed was done. Due to his abominable lack of wisdom, to call me a miracle of science is as appalling a misnomer as may be. But, perhaps modern science has unveiled a true miracle – that of the unnatural creation of a similar …

What About Walden?, Ben Rabe '14

2011 Fall Semester

In the complete and utter blackness, I strained my eyes and ears in a constant struggle to remain aware of my surroundings, as it always seems that the inhabitants of the forest are most active when one isn’t paying attention. Still in darkness, I found myself in a perpetual struggle against myself to retain my focus. Just as I began to succumb to the pressures of sleep, the first light appeared over the horizon. Within minutes, I was bathed in the gentle, forgiving sunlight that cleansed me of all desire for rest. I felt alert, connected to my surroundings and …

The Help, Morgan Ashley Craft '12 Oct 2011

The Help, Morgan Ashley Craft '12

2011 Fall Semester

Kathryn Stockett’s The Help focuses on the racism that was prominent in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi. Two black maids, Aibileen and Minny, and a white socialite, Skeeter, join together, in secret and risking their lives, to write a book that tells the stories of black domestic maids working in white Southern households. Specifically, Skeeter focuses on beginning a career as a journalist, instead of finding a husband and starting a family, which was not a norm amongst the Southern women. The Help not only addresses racism in the 1960s, it also focuses on the importance of a husband and a family …

Initial Calibration Of Ccd Images For The Dark Energy Survey, Deokgeun Park '12, H. Thomas Diehl, Douglas Tucker

Student Publications & Research

Astronomical images taken from a telescope must go through “astronomical image processing” to remove instrumental signatures. The Dark Energy Survey (DES), which will start operations in 2012, will use a 570 megapixel Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to study the mystery of the acceleration of the expanding universe. The DECam will use DES filters and 74 of a new type of astronomical Charge Coupled Device (CCD) that is particularly efficient in detecting near-infrared light. Together, the DES filters and DECam CCDs are optimized for the measurement of redshifts of distant galaxies. In preparation for the DES, data were collected from the …

A High-Resolution Finite-Difference Method For Simulating Two-Fluid, Viscoelastic Gel Dynamics, Grady Wright, Robert D. Guy, Jian Du, Aaron L. Fogelson Oct 2011

A High-Resolution Finite-Difference Method For Simulating Two-Fluid, Viscoelastic Gel Dynamics, Grady Wright, Robert D. Guy, Jian Du, Aaron L. Fogelson

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An important class of gels are those composed of a polymer network and fluid solvent. The mechanical and rheological properties of these two-fluid gels can change dramatically in response to temperature, stress, and chemical stimulus. Because of their adaptivity, these gels are important in many biological systems, e.g. gels make up the cytoplasm of cells and the mucus in the respiratory and digestive systems, and they are involved in the formation of blood clots. In this study we consider a mathematical model for gels that treats the network phase as a viscoelastic fluid with spatially and temporally varying material parameters …

Mapping Agroforestry Design In Project Tipitamba: The Influence Of Spacing On Tree Growth, Joseph Lee Oct 2011

Mapping Agroforestry Design In Project Tipitamba: The Influence Of Spacing On Tree Growth, Joseph Lee

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Agriculturalists in Brasil’s Zona Bragantina are balancing short term social and economic goals with the long term productivity of their agroecosystems. While these goals often times are seen as conflicting, the implementation of agroforestry systems through EMBRAPA’s Projeto Tipitamba has provided an opportunity for farmers in the region to intercrop quick growing, marketable, non-timber forest products with highly valued lumber species all on the same area of land. As Projeto Tipitamba also provides the associated farmers with access to a bush-chopper, it also allows for farmers to stop swidden, slash-and-burn, agriculture and convert to chop-and-mulch land preparation. As a result, …

Computational Studies Of Ion Transport In Polymer Electrolytes, Hui Wu Oct 2011

Computational Studies Of Ion Transport In Polymer Electrolytes, Hui Wu

Doctoral Dissertations

Improving ionic conductivity and lithium mobility in polymer electrolytes is important for their practical use for battery electrolytes. In this study, a combination of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations was used to bring insight into lithium ion transport in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with plasticizers and also next to alumina solid surface doped with lithium salt. The simulations were performed using a moderately high molecular weight polymer (Mn = 10,000 g/mol) at an EO:Li ratio of 15. For the plasticized system, the PEO with LiN(CF3SO 2)2 (LiTFSI) was mixed with 10 wt% plasticizers that included either cyclic ethylene carbonate …

Gifted Is As Gifted Does, Theresa Monaco Oct 2011

Gifted Is As Gifted Does, Theresa Monaco

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In the last decades, interest in instructional process has drawn the attention of linguists to classroom discourse studies (Lee, 2007; Chen, 2007; Hall, 2007; Macbeth, 2004). Such growing attention has been attributed to the importance associated with verbal discourse in meaning making (Chin, 2006). Chin further notes that a common ground available in the literature on pedagogical discourse is the three-turn sequence interaction called “triadic dialogue” (Lemke, 1990 cited in Macbeth, 2004), or Initiation Response Evaluation (IRE) (Menham ,1979 cited in Chin, 2006), or Initiation Response Feedback (IRF) (Sinclair & Coulthard, 1975 cited in Macbeth, 2004). In other words, a …

Transforming Data Into Knowledge, Lane Mills, James Mcdowelle, William Rouse Jr.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Hans Selye, the first major researcher of stress coined the word ‘stress’ in 1936 and defined it as “a non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”. Selye (1974) is of the view that stress is a facet of life which human beings cannot avoid. In fact he confidently declares that “total freedom from stress is death” Selye (1976) stated that stress in moderate levels enhances function. Kaplan and Sadock (2000) in their study on students also found out that moderate stress among students enhances learning ability. Pfeiffer (2001) emphasizes that stress helps students to peak their performance. …

Photoinduced Electron Transfer In Naphthalimide-Pyridine Systems: Effect Of Proton Transfer On Charge Recombination Efficiencies, Pavel Kucheryavy, Renat Khatmullin, Ekaterina Mirzakulova, Dapeng Zhou, Ksenija D. Glusac Oct 2011

Photoinduced Electron Transfer In Naphthalimide-Pyridine Systems: Effect Of Proton Transfer On Charge Recombination Efficiencies, Pavel Kucheryavy, Renat Khatmullin, Ekaterina Mirzakulova, Dapeng Zhou, Ksenija D. Glusac

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We studied the effect of proton-coupled electron transfer on lifetimes of the charge-separated radicals produced upon light irradiation of the thiomethyl-naphthalimide donor SMe-NI-H in the presence of nitro-cyano-pyridine acceptor (NO(2)-CN-PYR). The dynamics of electron and proton transfer were studied using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy in the UV/vis range. We find that the photoinduced electron transfer between excited SMe-NI-H and NO(2)-CN-PYR occurs with a rate of 1.1 x 10(9) s(-1) to produce radical ions SMe-NI-H(center dot+) and NO(2)-CN-PYR(center dot-). These initially produced radical ions in a solvent cage do not undergo a proton transfer, possibly due to unfavorable geometry between N-H proton …
