We report the detection of pulsed gamma rays from the Crab pulsar at energies above 100 giga–electron volts (GeV) with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The detection cannot be explained on the basis of current pulsar models. The photon spectrum of pulsed emission between 100 mega–electron volts and 400 GeV is described by a broken power law that is statistically preferred over a power law with an exponential cutoff. It is unlikely that the observation can be explained by invoking curvature radiation as the origin of the observed gamma rays above …

Do Student Learning Styles Translate To Different "Testing Styles"?, Anika Leithner

Political Science

Professors seem to be more aware of different student learning styles than ever before and are utilizing various teaching techniques in order to appeal to different students in their classes. Unfortunately, presenting materials is only one side of the coin, while the other side—assessment—has not received the same amount of attention. After all, if teachers can agree that students have different methods for learning, does it not stand to reason that they have different methods of reproducing this knowledge as well? This article makes a case for more diverse assessment techniques within the same course, connecting our knowledge on individual …

Two-Photon Double Ionization Of Helium: Evolution Of The Joint Angular Distribution With Photon Energy And Two-Electron Energy Sharing, Zheng Zhang, Liang-You Peng, Ming-Hui Xu, Anthony F. Starace, Toru Morishita, Qihuang Gong Oct 2011

Two-Photon Double Ionization Of Helium: Evolution Of The Joint Angular Distribution With Photon Energy And Two-Electron Energy Sharing, Zheng Zhang, Liang-You Peng, Ming-Hui Xu, Anthony F. Starace, Toru Morishita, Qihuang Gong

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ab initio calculations of two-photon double ionization of helium with photon energies varying from the nonsequential regime to well above the double-ionization threshold are presented. A systematic study of the joint angular distributions of the two ionized electrons at different energy sharing shows that the role of electron correlations is imprinted in the joint angular distribution. In particular, a rather general pattern is identified in the nonsequential regime that is independent of photon energy, pulse length, and energy sharing between the two electrons. Interestingly, the same distribution pattern is found for the equal-energy-sharing case, even when the photon energy is …

Beginning Teachers’ Perceptions Of Preparedness To Differentiate Instruction For Diverse Learners, Michelle K. Casey, Robert K. Gable Oct 2011

Beginning Teachers’ Perceptions Of Preparedness To Differentiate Instruction For Diverse Learners, Michelle K. Casey, Robert K. Gable

K-12 Education

A two-phase, sequential mixed-methods design was used to assess perceptions of Preparedness (28 items, alpha = .96) to differentiate instruction for N = 36 graduates from one MAT teacher preparation program. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and t-test procedures. A focus group with N = 10 purposively selected 2010 graduates and interviews with N = 2 graduates each from the 2008 and 2009 classes, and N = 2 faculty were conducted. The following areas presented challenges to teachers when attempting differentiation: pre-existing ideas of how to teach which contradict differentiation, misinformation regarding differentiation, and classroom management skills. …

Redefinir “Desarrollo Sustentable”: El Caso De Un Grande Proyecto Hidroeléctrico, Keely Mccaskie

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

A Study Of Sponge Aquaculture In Jambiani: Is Shallow Farming Feasible?, Sarah Friday Oct 2011

A Study Of Sponge Aquaculture In Jambiani: Is Shallow Farming Feasible?, Sarah Friday

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the village of Jambiani, Unguja, a Swiss NGO called Marine Cultures has established an experimental sponge farming initiative to improve local employment and support economic development. Currently, the main farming site is only accessible through SCUBA diving. This is consistent with experimental farm sites in other oceanic regions, as most are located in depths of at least five meters with sponges suspended vertically to maximize water flow exposure. Farms located in shallower water may not be conducive to sponge growth due to highly variable environmental conditions; however, no conclusive research has been conducted on this matter (Duckworth 2009). Nonetheless, …

Seaweed Farmer Education: Is It Enough To Sustain The Industry? Analyzing The Status Of Stakeholder Investment In Muungoni And Jambiani, Unguja, Erika Davis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since Filipino researchers arrived in Zanzibar to determine the potential for cultivation of seaweed more than 20 years ago, the islands' coastal communities have relied on the resource as a main or alternative source of income. When the companies started investing at the industry’s onset, trained personnel offered farmers' education on proper farming techniques for Spinosum (Eucheuma denticulatum) and Cottonii (Kappaphycus spp.) by establishing demonstrative (demo) farms and holding seminars. Today, informal training involves experienced farmers teaching the newcomers their techniques. While demo farms remain in some villages, companies offer no extension services based on the belief that the farmers …

Sempush: Privacy-Aware And Scalable Broadcasting For Semantic Microblogging, Pavan Kapanipathi, Julia Anaya, Alexandre Passant

Kno.e.sis Publications

Users of traditional microblogging platforms such as Twitter face drawbacks in terms of (1) Privacy of status updates as a followee - reaching undesired people (2) Information overload as a follower - receiving uninteresting microposts from followees. In this paper we demonstrate distributed and user-controlled dissemination of microposts using SMOB (semantic microblogging framework) and Semantic Hub (privacy-aware implementation of PuSH3 protocol) . The approach leverages users' Social Graph to dynamically create group of followers who are eligible to receive micropost. The restrictions to create the groups are provided by the followee based on the hastags in the micropost. Both SMOB …

Trends Toward Alternative Teaching Certification And Compensation In Special Education: Considerations And Implications For Traditional Teacher Preparation Programs, Theresa Quigney Oct 2011

Trends Toward Alternative Teaching Certification And Compensation In Special Education: Considerations And Implications For Traditional Teacher Preparation Programs, Theresa Quigney

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Within a framework of trust markets, this study compares expenses, instructional expenses, and revenues per FTE of not-for-profit and for-profit postsecondary institutions using IPEDS data. Median expenses per FTE at not-for-profit institutions were double those at the for-profit institutions. Median revenue beyond instructional expenses increased at the 4-year-and-above level institutions while decreasing at other levels. Percent of revenue allocated to instructional expenses, other expenses, and excess revenue is presented. Surprisingly, 4-year-and-above, not-for-profit institutions generate more excess revenue per FTE than 4-year-and-above for-profit institutions. Implications of the nondistribution constraint for trust markets and the policy implications of these findings are discussed.

Governmental Data Mining And Its Alternatives, Tal Z. Zarsky Oct 2011

Governmental Data Mining And Its Alternatives, Tal Z. Zarsky

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Governments face new and serious risks when striving to protect their citizens. Of the various information technology tools discussed in the political and legal sphere, data mining applications for the analysis of personal information have probably generated the greatest interest. Data mining has captured the imagination as a tool which can potentially close the intelligence gap constantly deepening between governments and their targets. Data mining initiatives are popping up everywhere. The reaction to the data mining of personal information by governmental entities came to life in a flurry of reports, discussions, and academic papers. The general notion in these sources …

Development Of A Passive Sampler For Gaseous Mercury, Mae S. Gustin, Seth N. Lyman, P. Kilner, E. Prestbo

USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications

Here we describe work toward development of the components of a cost effective passive sampling system for gaseous Hg that could be broadly deployed by nontechnical staff. The passive sampling system included an external shield to reduce turbulence and exposure to precipitation and dust, a diffusive housing that directly protects the collection surface during deployment and handling, and a collection surface. A protocol for cleaning and deploying the sampler and an analytical method were developed. Our final design consisted of a polycarbonate external shield enclosing a custom diffusive housing made from expanded PTFE tubing. Two collection surfaces were investigated, gold …

Green Marine Construction, Sylvain Pioch, Kirk Kilfoyle, Harold Levrel, Richard E. Spieler Oct 2011

Green Marine Construction, Sylvain Pioch, Kirk Kilfoyle, Harold Levrel, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The oceans incorporate three-quarters of the Earth's surface, and most of humanity lives in coastal regions. For example, more than half of the total U.S. population presently lives in coastal areas, and the coastal population is projected to increase by 7 million between now and 2015. Similar projections can be made for other developed countries many of which depend on the coastal zone as a major source of tourism-related income. The long-term ecological health and sustainability of the marine and coastal environments are obviously at risk. Coastal projects such as beach re-nourishment, housing developments, and pipe-line, harbor and marina construction …

Fairy Tale Stylization Project, Dan Gleason Oct 2011

Fairy Tale Stylization Project, Dan Gleason

Modern World Fiction

The Fairy Tale project is a group project that captures the key distinctions in literary style that we analyze in our Modern World Fiction class. In that class, we look at fiction through the lens of different stylistic flavors: maximalism, minimalism, ludic (playful) style, surrealism, and magical realism. The fairy tale project helps students look back on all these different styles, reflect on them, and note their key features and differences more clearly. In this project, groups of students will rewrite a fairy tale in all (five) literary styles. Each member of the group will rewrite the tale in one …

Walden, Addison Schwaller '14 Oct 2011

Walden, Addison Schwaller '14

2011 Fall Semester

Nature is the source of humanity’s wisdom and philosophy. In his book Walden, Henry David Thoreau mentioned nature almost constantly, which is fitting because his writing includes him immersing himself in nature for “two years and two months” (Thoreau 827). When he became more involved and intimate with nature, he managed to escape bustling society and look at it from a new perspective, which enabled him to criticize it. This new perspective makes Walden a controversial read, especially for the time it was written. Thoreau fearlessly challenged himself to see the natural world as it actually was, and to …

In the recent past, software product line engineering has become one of the most promising practices in software industry with the potential to substantially increase the software development productivity. Software product line engineering approach spans the dimensions of business, architecture, software engineering process and organization. The increasing popularity of software product line engineering in the software industry necessitates a process maturity evaluation methodology. Accordingly, this paper presents a business maturity model of software product line, which is a methodology to evaluate the current maturity of the business dimension of a software product line in an organization. This model examines the …

Computer Simulation Of A Mathematical Model Of Haart Therapy For Hiv-1 Aids, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

A clinically plausible mathematical model is constructed to describe the patho-physiological dynamics or HIV-1 induced AIDS during HAART therapy. The model equations incorporate physiological interactions between non-infected helper T cells, HIV-1 infected helper T cells, HIV-1 virions in the blood plasma, HIV-1 specific cytotoxic T cells and drug molecules or the HAART protocol. Investigative computer simulations arc performed to elucidate some therapeutic scenarios such as viral annihilation and efficacious HAART therapy. In particular, some mathematical criteria are derived for therapeutic outcomes such as viral persistence and viral annihilation.
