Study On Neural Conduction As In Myelinated Structure Under Pathological Conditions, George J. Morales Jan 2011

Study On Neural Conduction As In Myelinated Structure Under Pathological Conditions, George J. Morales

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A method for modeling and simulating neural action potential (AP) propagation along the length of an axon containing a number of Ranvier nodes is proposed in this dissertation. A system identification approach is adopted to represent node of Ranvier (NR) response to current pulse stimulus in the form of transfer function representations for NR excitability. Segments of myelinated internodal (IN) and NR regions are cascaded, representing the remaining downstream axon after a site-of-stimulus introduction of an external current pulse. This cascading network is used to simulate "cable" properties and signal propagation along the length of the axon. This work proposes …

Synchronization Of Coupled Semiconductor Lasers, Michael S. London Jan 2011

Synchronization Of Coupled Semiconductor Lasers, Michael S. London

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The synchronization of coupled semiconductor lasers with delay is investigated by numerical simulations of the nonlinear dynamic models complemented by a stability analysis of the linearized system. The equations used in the dissertation are based on the well known "Lang-Kobayashi" model modified to include unidirectional and bidirectional coupling. Stability diagrams are calculated and supplemented by numerically integrated time series. Synchronization is determined and quantified by computing the cross-correlation function. It is found that synchronized states are achievable for a wide range of coupling constants and delay times. These findings have implications for experiment and technological applications, notably in cryptography.

The Minimal Logarithmic Signature Conjecture, Nidhi. Singhi Jan 2011

The Minimal Logarithmic Signature Conjecture, Nidhi. Singhi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The minimal logarithmic signature conjecture states that in any finite simple group there are subsets Ai, 1 i s such that the size jAij of each Ai is a prime or 4 and each element of the group has a unique expression as a product Qs i=1 ai of elements ai 2 Ai. Logarithmic signatures have been used in the construction of several cryptographic primitives since the late 1970's [3, 15, 17, 19, 16]. The conjecture is shown to be true for various families of simple groups including cyclic groups, An, PSLn(q) when gcd(n; q 1) is 1, 4 or …

Theoretical Study Of Binary Alloy Thin Film Growth, Mark R. Bouwens Jan 2011

Theoretical Study Of Binary Alloy Thin Film Growth, Mark R. Bouwens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Computer simulations of the growth of binary alloy thin films in two and three dimensions were performed using an extension of the Solid on Solid model. Snapshots for a range of interactions and diffusion rates are presented and critically compared to experiment. A wide variety of distinct phases is identified and their growth conditions analyzed. These findings are summarized in a phase diagram. In addition, a fractal analysis of the domains is performed. It is found that for negative interactions the islands are two-dimensional, while for positive interactions, regardless of diffusion rate, a fractal dimension of 1.78 is obtained.

Development Of An Ultra-Lightweight Buckling-Restrained Brace Using Analytical And Numerical Methods, John Andrew Tinker

Dissertations and Theses

An ultra-lightweight buckling-restrained brace (ULWBRB) is developed using a highly ductile aluminum core and FRP restrainer. Utilization of lightweight materials results in a BRB that is 25% the weight of traditional mortar-filled tube varieties allowing easy installation in small to medium sized buildings requiring seismic retrofit without the need for heavy equipment. Construction utilizes commonly stocked materials able to be customized for required strength, drift, and geometry limitations. Analytical single degree of freedom (SDOF) and Euler buckling models are compared with published equations to determine the required restrainer stiffness (RRS). SDOF models yield RRS values 200% higher than the Euler …

The Role Of Feedback In The Assimilation Of Information In Prediction Markets, Richard Donald Jolly Jan 2011

The Role Of Feedback In The Assimilation Of Information In Prediction Markets, Richard Donald Jolly

Dissertations and Theses

Leveraging the knowledge of an organization is an ongoing challenge that has given rise to the field of knowledge management. Yet, despite spending enormous sums of organizational resources on Information Technology (IT) systems, executives recognize there is much more knowledge to harvest. Prediction markets are emerging as one tool to help extract this tacit knowledge and make it operational. Yet, prediction markets, like other markets, are subject to pathologies (e.g., bubbles and crashes) which compromise their accuracy and may discourage organizational use.

The techniques of experimental economics were used to study the characteristics of prediction markets. Empirical data was gathered …

A Functional Approach To Memory-Safe Operating Systems, Rebekah Leslie Jan 2011

A Functional Approach To Memory-Safe Operating Systems, Rebekah Leslie

Dissertations and Theses

Purely functional languages--with static type systems and dynamic memory management using garbage collection--are a known tool for helping programmers to reduce the number of memory errors in programs. By using such languages, we can establish correctness properties relating to memory-safety through our choice of implementation language alone. Unfortunately, the language characteristics that make purely functional languages safe also make them more difficult to apply in a low-level domain like operating systems construction. The low-level features that support the kinds of hardware manipulations required by operating systems are not typically available in memory-safe languages with garbage collection. Those that are provided …

This paper presents a musical instrument, which uses in vitro neuronal networks to synthesise sounds. Cultures of dissociated neurons are grown on a dish with an embedded rectangular array of electrodes (MEA). Isolated neurons reconnect with one another via an extensive network of synaptically connected projections to form a dense monolayer of neurons. Cultures are provided with stimulation, which influences their activity, and can modify the culture’s state. The core of the sound synthesis engine of our musical instrument is a monophonic additive synthesizer using sinusoidal oscillators. We devised a method to generate frequencies, phase and amplitude values for the …

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown Jan 2011

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Science fiction has long been a site in which utopian-dystopian visions have been articulated. This paper uses one exemplar of this genre as a springboard into a discussion of the desire for a return to origin and of flawed attempts to impose an image of that origin, with discursions into illustrations drawn from contemporary conditions. In opposition to the hegemonic and reductive tendencies inherent in such attempts, this paper proposes an alternative which engages with the everyday reality of life. Intrinsic to this proposition is that our traditions and utopias must be founded upon a continual (re)making in the everyday.

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani Jan 2011

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article in its essence aims to challenge and unfold, each at a time, two different fields of methodology – cybernetics and phenomenology – that have direct effects on the product of being and the process of becoming in architectural discourse. Furthermore, this article suggests a third way philosophy for architecture that relates notions of post-phenomenology and technoscience, and considers both to be equally vital to development and speculation within current architectural discourse. First, the history of each of the two fields – cybernetics and phenomenology – will be unveiled with a focus on exploring their impact upon architecture in …
