RNA molecules are stabilized by a wide range of non canonical interactions that are not present in DNA. Among them, the recently classified base phosphate (BPh) interactions belong to the most important ones. Twelve percent of nucleotides in the ribosomal crystal structures are involved in BPh interactions. BPh interactions are highly conserved and provide major constraints on RNA sequence evolution. Here we provide assessment of the energetics of BPh interactions using MP2 computations extrapolated to the complete basis set of atomic orbitals and corrected for higher-order electron correlation effects. The reference computations are compared with DFT-D and DFT-D3 approaches, the …

Glitter And Glints On Water, David K. Lynch, David S. P. Dearborn, James A. Lock Oct 2011

Glitter And Glints On Water, David K. Lynch, David S. P. Dearborn, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

We present new observations of glitter and glints using short and long time exposure photographs and high frame rate videos. Using the sun and moon as light sources to illuminate the ocean and laboratory water basins, we found that (1) most glitter takes place on capillary waves rather than on gravity waves, (2) certain aspects of glitter morphology depend on the presence or absence of thin clouds between the light source and the water, and (3) bent glitter paths are caused by asymmetric wave slope distributions We present computer simulations that are able to reproduce the observations and make predictions …

Alternative Proofs On The Indices Of Cacti And Unicyclic Graphs With N Vertices, Sudipta Mallik Oct 2011

Alternative Proofs On The Indices Of Cacti And Unicyclic Graphs With N Vertices, Sudipta Mallik

Mathematics Faculty Research

Let Hn be the cactus obtained from the star K1,n—1 by adding └ n—1/2┘ independent edges between pairs of pendant vertices. Let K1,+n—1 be the unicyclic graph obtained from the star by appending one edge. In this paper we give alternative proofs of the following results: Among all cacti with n vertices, Hn is the unique cactus whose spectral radius is maximal, and among all unicyclic graphs with n vertices, K1,+n—1 is the unique unicyclic graph whose spectral radius is maximal. We also prove …

A Summary Of The Effectiveness Of Two Strategies For Improving Community College Mathematics Instruction: Achieving The Dream Initiatives Undertaken By The Mathematics Program At Johnson County Community College, Jeff R. Frost Oct 2011

A Summary Of The Effectiveness Of Two Strategies For Improving Community College Mathematics Instruction: Achieving The Dream Initiatives Undertaken By The Mathematics Program At Johnson County Community College, Jeff R. Frost

Sabbatical Projects

In 2009, Johnson County Community College (JCCC) was selected to participate in the nascent Achieving the Dream (AtD) initiative. As part of that participation, the college was expected to identify significant barriers keeping their students from completing degrees and certificates. After analyzing student completion data among JCCC mathematics students, the college determined that two high-risk groups were: 1) students placing into developmental mathematics courses and; 2) students enrolled in College Algebra, the so-called gateway mathematics course at the college. In an attempt to improve success rates among those two groups of students, the mathematics division at JCCC created two initiatives—one …

Another Dimension From Lidar – Obtaining Foliage Density From Full Waveform Data, Thomas Adams, Peter Beets, Christopher Parrish Oct 2011

Another Dimension From Lidar – Obtaining Foliage Density From Full Waveform Data, Thomas Adams, Peter Beets, Christopher Parrish

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

LiDAR tells the user where surfaces are, not what they are. In this study we investigate the potential for waveform LiDAR to provide more information on the nature of the returns over forestry. Waveform LiDAR was acquired for ten Pinus radiata plots in a New Zealand plantation, along with comprehensive leaf area sampling in 2m vertical bands. The decay rate of each waveform peak was shown to be a useful tool for estimating foliage density, and has potential for identifying regions containing ground and understorey. Leaf Area Density (LAD) is an expression of foliage density per unit height, and a …

Computer Simulation Of Overtopping Of Levees, Mehrad Kamalzare, Zhongxian Chen, Christopher S. Stuetzle, Barbara Cutler, W. Randolph Franklin, Thomas F. Zimmie

Computer and Data Science Faculty Publications

There have been many cases of earth embankment failures, for example, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, where breaching occurred and devastated the surrounding population. Levee failures are preventable by a better understanding of the ways in which these embankments are designed and fail. The objective of this research is to protect levees against future failures. This paper studies various overtopping quantities and durations to represent the same level of levee erosion hazard. This study is based on experimental results of steady flows on the land side of a levee. The effect of water flow has been investigated and a comparison has …

Experiencing Literary Self-Consciousness In The Classroom, Dan Gleason Oct 2011

Experiencing Literary Self-Consciousness In The Classroom, Dan Gleason

Modern World Fiction

This activity is a fun and even bizarre response to John Barth’s highly self-referential story “Lost in the Funhouse.” In that story, Barth comments extensively on the writing as it happens (as he makes it happen), alerting the reader to the conventions of fiction as he deploys them. The following activity brings such jarring commentary into the classroom by leading students to call out the conventions of the classroom as they happen; the activity makes students live the experience of interruptive meta-commentary and can thus lead to vibrant discussion on the commentary in the story, too.

The Helmholtz Maneuver, Or The Idea Of (Honors In) A University, Richard England Oct 2011

The Helmholtz Maneuver, Or The Idea Of (Honors In) A University, Richard England

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

What does honors offer the university that supports it? On the NCHC listserv this summer, a plea for help came from a colleague whose university was considering dropping its honors program. As budgets grow tight, small, expensive honors programs become vulnerable, and their defenders need arguments that administrators can hear and understand. Most campuswide honors programs offer a general-education-based curriculum. Unfortunately, few campus units defend the idea of general education as a whole although they may fiercely guard their particular piece of it. At many schools, campus-wide honors is one of the few academic programs to be rooted in a …

Future Participation In The Conservation Reserve Program In North Dakota, Lorilie M. Atkinson, Rebecca J. Romsdahl, Michael J. Hill

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The purpose of this study was to gauge the impact of agriculture and energy policies on conservation practices through a survey of conservation reserve program (CRP) contract holders in a selected Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota-Burleigh, Kidder, and Stutsman Counties. The survey results showed that 48% of respondents are considering returning CRP acres to annual crop production once the contract expires. The largest influence on post-CRP land use was the market prices for production of annual crops. Respondents also identified lack of knowledge of conservation programs as a large hurdle to participation. This may indicate a need for improved …

Review Of Grass: In Search Of Human Habitat. By Joe C. Truett. Foreword By Harry W. Greene., Mary Ann Vinton Oct 2011

Review Of Grass: In Search Of Human Habitat. By Joe C. Truett. Foreword By Harry W. Greene., Mary Ann Vinton

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Much of the book is devoted to discussing the heavy human dependence on grasslands and whether this relationship can be maintained in company with grassland conservation. Can humans continue to use grasslands for food, fiber, and newer uses like biofuels and carbon banking while still sustaining the ecosystem? Many of us in academic ecology struggle with resolving perceived conflicts between conservation and human grassland use. In many cases, a "win-win" scenario exists in which, for example, the proper use of livestock grazing is perfectly compatible with a healthy grassland ecosystem. In other cases, such as conserving prairie dog populations, tensions …

Api And Method Call Selection In An Automated Mashup Composer, Joseph Durham

Senior Seminars

With internet technologies expanding at a very rapid rate, the need for immediate data acquisition from many different sources is higher than ever before. While web mashups have helped bring this information to the user in a quick and desirable manner, the development of these mash ups is still a time consuming, programming intensive process. Currently there is no true automatic environment that will allow the user to create a new mash up without requiring any knowledge of programming.

This paper introduces a module that will help solve a portion of this automatic mash up composer by determining which sources …

(Wp 2011-08) Identity, John B. Davis Oct 2011

(Wp 2011-08) Identity, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This chapter introduces the economics and identity literature, and discusses the relationship between social identity and personal identity. It distinguishes categorical and relational types of social identities, and argues that the former are more readily associated with instrumentally rational behavior, while the latter, which involve close contact with others in roles and social positions, are more readily associated with behavior in which individuals unilaterally reciprocate the actions of others – what Bruni terms unilateral altruism, which involves a non-instrumental or deontological type of motivation. The chapter also distinguishes two views of personal identity as relational in nature, Bachrach's game-theoretic approach …

Evaluation And In Vitro Studies Of Folate Peg Biotin And Other Peg Agents, Vikram Reddy Kasarala Oct 2011

Evaluation And In Vitro Studies Of Folate Peg Biotin And Other Peg Agents, Vikram Reddy Kasarala

All Capstone Projects

Folate is an essential component for cell growth and cell division, playing a major role in DNA synthesis. It is common sense that the rapidly dividing cells synthesize more DNA, including cancer cells. Also, it was reported that cancer cells over express Folate receptors and this was the basis for our probe for cancer cells. We used long PEG biotin in conjugation with Folate. Previous studies in our group showed that the PEG could be used in the sensor to detect and capture cancer cells. The present study was aimed at evaluating the effect of Long PEG containing Folate based …
