Why Probability Appears In Quantum Mechaincs, Jerome Blackman, Wu Teh Hsiang Oct 2011

Why Probability Appears In Quantum Mechaincs, Jerome Blackman, Wu Teh Hsiang

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Early in the development of quantum theory Bohr introduced what came to be called the Copenhagen interpretation. Specifically, the square of the absolute value of the wave function was to be used as a probability density. There followed lengthy arguments about this ranging from alternative universes to Schrodinger's cat. Einstein famously remarked "I am convinced that He (God) does not play dice." The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model of the measuring process that shows that the Copenhagen interpretation can actually follow from the fact that the time development of quantum systems is governed by the …

A Modified Stokes-Einstein Equation For Aβ Aggregation, Srisairam Achuthan, Bong Jae Chung, Preetam Ghosh, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari, Ashuwin Vaidya Oct 2011

A Modified Stokes-Einstein Equation For Aβ Aggregation, Srisairam Achuthan, Bong Jae Chung, Preetam Ghosh, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari, Ashuwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: In all amyloid diseases, protein aggregates have been implicated fully or partly, in the etiology of the disease. Due to their significance in human pathologies, there have been unprecedented efforts towards physiochemical understanding of aggregation and amyloid formation over the last two decades. An important relation from which hydrodynamic radii of the aggregate is routinely measured is the classic Stokes-Einstein equation. Here, we report a modification in the classical Stokes-Einstein equation using a mixture theory approach, in order to accommodate the changes in viscosity of the solvent due to the changes in solute size and shape, to implement a …

Aerial Rendezvous Between An Unmanned Air Vehicle And An Orbiting Target Vehicle, Mark Andrew Owen Oct 2011

Aerial Rendezvous Between An Unmanned Air Vehicle And An Orbiting Target Vehicle, Mark Andrew Owen

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we develop methods that facilitate an aerial rendezvous between two air vehicles. The objective of this research is to produce a method that can be used to insert a miniature air vehicle behind a rendezvous vehicle and then track that vehicle to enable a visual rendezvous. For this research we assume the rendezvous vehicle is following a relatively stable and roughly elliptical orbit. Path planners and controllers have been developed that can be used to effectively intercept the rendezvous vehicle by inserting the MAV onto the orbit of interest. A method for planning and following time-optimal Dubins …

Estimation Of A Non-Parametric Variable Importance Measure Of A Continuous Exposure, Chambaz Antoine, Pierre Neuvial, Mark J. Van Der Laan Oct 2011

Estimation Of A Non-Parametric Variable Importance Measure Of A Continuous Exposure, Chambaz Antoine, Pierre Neuvial, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We define a new measure of variable importance of an exposure on a continuous outcome, accounting for potential confounders. The exposure features a reference level x0 with positive mass and a continuum of other levels. For the purpose of estimating it, we fully develop the semi-parametric estimation methodology called targeted minimum loss estimation methodology (TMLE) [van der Laan & Rubin, 2006; van der Laan & Rose, 2011]. We cover the whole spectrum of its theoretical study (convergence of the iterative procedure which is at the core of the TMLE methodology; consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimator), practical implementation, simulation …

The Seminarts Experience: Restructuring A Ninth Grade Transitional Program In A Whole School Arts Academy, Mari Celi Sanchez Oct 2011

The Seminarts Experience: Restructuring A Ninth Grade Transitional Program In A Whole School Arts Academy, Mari Celi Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations

The potential problem with a student's high school experience may begin as soon as he/she enters the high school. Freshmen students experience increased changes in school environment, as well as new friends, teachers, rules and regulations, and challenging courses. They need to maneuver all of these experiences with complex social-emotional and physiological upheavals associated with adolescence. For some students, this transition to high school has negative consequences that lead to achievement loss and dropping out of school. Because of this, effective transitional programs that assist new ninth grade students into high school are needed. Freshmen require procedural, social, and academic …

Risk Management In The Arctic Offshore: Wicked Problems Require New Paradigms, Mandy Kaempf, Sharman Haley Oct 2011

Risk Management In The Arctic Offshore: Wicked Problems Require New Paradigms, Mandy Kaempf, Sharman Haley

ISER Reports

Recent project-management literature and high-profile disasters—the financial crisis, the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the Fukushima nuclear accident—illustrate the flaws of traditional risk models for complex projects. This research examines how various groups with interests in the Arctic offshore define risks. The findings link the wicked problem framework and the emerging paradigm of Project Management of the Second Order (PM-2). Wicked problems are problems that are unstructured, complex, irregular, interactive, adaptive, and novel. The authors synthesize literature on the topic to offer strategies for navigating wicked problems, provide new variables to deconstruct traditional risk models, and integrate objective and …

Constraints On Vector Unparticle Physics From Cosmic Censorship, Jonas R. Mureika Oct 2011

Constraints On Vector Unparticle Physics From Cosmic Censorship, Jonas R. Mureika

Physics Faculty Works

Vector unparticle couplings to standard model fields produce repulsive corrections to gravity. From a general relativistic perspective, this leads to an effective Reissner-Nordstrom-like metric whose "charge" is a function of the unparticle coupling constant λ, and therefore can admit naked singularities. Requiring the system to respect cosmic censorship provides a new method of constraining the value of λ. These limits are extremely loose for stellar-mass black holes, but commensurate with existing bounds for primordial black holes. In the case of theoretical low-mass black holes, the bounds on λ are much stricter than those derived from astrophysical and accelerator …

National Chamber Choir Of Ireland, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity

Many stories have been born from the mists of Irish mythology. None, however, can match the epic tale of St. Patrick’s encounter with Caílte and Oisín, the last of Finn mac Cumaill’s legendary band of warriors. This grand saga, the Acallam na Senórach: “An Irish Colloquy”, intertwines the ancient lore and the new religion, creating a new and lasting vision for Ireland. The tale has been adapted into an hour-long English-language music and vocal piece by composer Tarik O’Regan. Performing this regional premiere will be the incomparable National Chamber Choir of Ireland, the flagship choral ensemble of the Emerald Isle. …

Model Construction Of Option Pricing Based On Fuzzy Theory, Shang-En Yu, Ming-Yuan Leon Li, Kun-Huang Huarng, Tsung-Hao Chen, Chen-Yuan Chen Oct 2011

Model Construction Of Option Pricing Based On Fuzzy Theory, Shang-En Yu, Ming-Yuan Leon Li, Kun-Huang Huarng, Tsung-Hao Chen, Chen-Yuan Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Option pricing is a tool that investors often use for the purpose of arbitrage or hedging. However, both the BlackScholes model and the CRR model can only provide a theoretical reference value. The volatility in the CRR model cannot always appear in the precise sense because the financial markets fluctuate from time to time. Hence, the fuzzy volatility is naturally to be considered. The main purpose of this paper is the application of fuzzy sets theory to the CRR model. It is expected that fuzzy volatility, instead of the crisp values conventionally used in the CRR model, can provide reasonable …

A Generalization Of The Fujisawa–Kuh Global Inversion Theorem, M. Radulescu, S. Radulescu, Eduardo C. Balreira

Mathematics Faculty Research

We discuss the problem of global invertibility of nonlinear maps defined on the finitedimensional Euclidean space via differential tests. We provide a generalization of theFujisawa-Kuh global inversion theorem and introduce a generalized ratio conditionwhich detects when the pre-image of a certain class of linear manifolds is non-emptyand connected. In particular, we provide conditions that also detect global injectivity.

High-Power Broadband Laser Source Tunable From 3.0 Μm To 4.4 Μm Based On A Femtosecond Yb:Fiber Oscillator, Tyler W. Neely, Todd A. Johnson, Scott A. Diddams

Physics Faculty Publications

We describe a tunable broadband mid-IR laser source based on difference-frequency mixing of a 100 MHz femto second Yb:fiber laser oscillator and a Raman-shifted soliton generated with the same laser. The resulting light is tunable over 3.0 μm to 4.4 μm, with a FWHM bandwidth of 170 nm and maximum average output power up to 125 mW. The noise and coherence properties of this source are also investigated and described.

Linkages Between East Antarctic Ice Sheet Extent And Southern Ocean Temperatures Based On A Pliocene High‐Resolution Record Of Ice‐Rafted Debris Off Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, Sandra Passchier

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

[1] Ice‐rafted debris mass accumulation rates (IRD MAR) at a drill site on the Antarctic continental margin are investigated to evaluate the linkages between East Antarctic Ice Sheet extent and Southern Ocean temperatures in the early to mid‐Pliocene. ODP Site 1165 is within 400 km of the Antarctic coastline and in the direct pathway of icebergs released by the Amery Ice Shelf. The Amery Ice Shelf is the largest ice shelf in East Antarctica and it buttresses the Lambert Glacier drainage system, which accounts for 14% of the outflow from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. IRD MAR were low during …

A Simplified Approach For Estimating Soil Carbon And Nitrogen Stocks In Semi-Arid Complex Terrain, Melvin L. Kunkel, Alejandro N. Flores, Toni J. Smith, James P. Mcnamara, Shawn G. Benner

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigated soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) distribution and developed a model, using readily available geospatial data, to predict that distribution across a mountainous, semi-arid, watershed in southwestern Idaho (USA). Soil core samples were collected and analyzed from 133 locations at 6 depths (n=798), revealing that aspect dramatically influences the distribution of C and N, with north-facing slopes exhibiting up to 5 times more C and N than adjacent southfacing aspects. These differences are superimposed upon an elevation (precipitation) gradient, with soil C and N contents increasing by nearly a factor of 10 from the bottom (1100 m elevation) …

Similarity Scaling Of Turbulence Spectra And Cospectra In A Shallow Tidal Flow, Ryan K. Walter, Nicholas J. Nidzieko, Stephen G. Monismith Oct 2011

Similarity Scaling Of Turbulence Spectra And Cospectra In A Shallow Tidal Flow, Ryan K. Walter, Nicholas J. Nidzieko, Stephen G. Monismith

Physics

Measured turbulence power spectra, cospectra, and ogive curves from a shallow tidal flow were scaled using Monin‐Obukhov similarity theory to test the applicability to a generic tidal flow of universal curves found from a uniform, neutrally stable atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). While curves from individual 10 min data bursts deviate significantly from similarity theory, averages over large numbers of sufficiently energetic bursts follow the general shape. However, there are several differences: (1) Variance in the measured curves was shifted toward higher frequencies, (2) at low frequencies, velocity spectra were significantly more energetic than theory while cospectra were weaker, and (3) …

On The N-Wave Equations And Soliton Interactions In Two And Three Dimensions, Vladimir S. Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Assen V. Kyuldjiev Oct 2011

On The N-Wave Equations And Soliton Interactions In Two And Three Dimensions, Vladimir S. Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Assen V. Kyuldjiev

Articles

Several important examples of the N-wave equations are studied. These integrable equations can be linearized by formulation of the inverse scattering as a local Riemann–Hilbert problem (RHP). Several nontrivial reductions are presented. Such reductions can be applied to the generic N-wave equations but mainly the 3- and 4-wave interactions are presented as examples. Their one and two-soliton solutions are derived and their soliton interactions are analyzed. It is shown that additional reductions may lead to new types of soliton solutions. In particular the 4-wave equations with Z2xZ2 reduction group allow breather-like solitons. Finally it is demonstrated that …

A Method Of Analysis Integrating Hcr And Eta Modeling For Determining Risks Associated With Inadequate Flight Separation Events, Ruishan Sun, Yunfei Chen, Xinyi Liu, Tianchi Peng, Lu Liu

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This paper proposes an event tree to analyze the risk of inadequate flight separation based on the HCR model. We explore how theconsequences of such an event depend on factors such as abilities and mental states of pilots and air traffic controllers, and the efficiencyof human-machine interaction. We also discuss possible practical measures to control risks in an effort to improve civil aviation safety.

The Black Experience In Business Aviation: An Exploratory Case Study, Tara L. Harl Dr., Phil Roberts Oct 2011

The Black Experience In Business Aviation: An Exploratory Case Study, Tara L. Harl Dr., Phil Roberts

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Despite a rich heritage of interest in aviation as a career choice, Blacks have been underrepresented across all three areas of aviation inthe United States: airline/air transport, military, and general/business aviation. The lack of interest in aviation careers by Blacks has notbeen the issue; societal obstacles, historical ignorance of the Black aviation experience, and an industry that traditionally closed mostdoors to professional aviation careers for minorities have been the culprits. Business and corporate aviation (corporate flight departments/service providers) in particular has experienced low entrance and retention numbers for Black professionals, a reflection of the widercivilian aviation industry. An exploratory single …

Elementary Teachers’ Views About Teaching Design, Engineering, And Technology, Ming-Chien Hsu, Senay Purzer, Monica E. Cardella

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

While there is a growing interest in infusing engineering into elementary classrooms, very little is known about how well positionedelementary teachers are to teach engineering. This study examined elementary teachers’ perceptions of and familiarity with design, engineering, and technology (DET). We collected data from 192 elementary teachers using the DET teacher survey. While theseelementary teachers thought teaching DET was important (Mean 5 3.46; SD 5 0.43), they were relatively unfamiliar with DET (Mean 52.01; SD 5 0.65). Years of teaching experience did not affect teachers’ familiarity with teaching DET and their perceptions of how important DET was. Moderately experienced teachers showed …

Exploring Complex Engineering Learning Over Time With Epistemic Network Analysis, Gina Navoa Svarovsky Oct 2011

Exploring Complex Engineering Learning Over Time With Epistemic Network Analysis, Gina Navoa Svarovsky

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Recently, K-12 engineering education has received increased attention as a pathway to building stronger foundations in math andscience and introducing young people to the profession. However, the National Academy of Engineering found that many K-12engineering programs focus heavily on engineering design and science and math learning while minimizing the development ofengineering habits of mind. This narrowly-focused engineering activity can leave young people – and in particular, girls – with a limitedview of the profession. This study describes Digital Zoo, an engineering learning environment that engaged girls in authentic engineeringactivity in order to link the development of engineering skills and knowledge …
