‘‘Math In A Can’’: Teaching Mathematics And Engineering Design, Ronald B. Narode
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Using an apparently simple problem, ‘‘Design a cylindrical can that will hold a liter of milk,’’ this paper demonstrates how engineeringdesign may facilitate the teaching of the following ideas to secondary students: linear and non-linear relationships; basic geometry ofcircles, rectangles, and cylinders; unit measures of area and volume; solving systems of equations with at least two variables;minimization of area to control materials costs and to prevent heat exchange; packing geometry to minimize space for transportation andstorage and for controlling for heat exchange; golden ratio as a design aesthetic; ergonomic factors in design including considerations ofcomfort of handling and safety; and …

Stem Integration: Teacher Perceptions And Practice, Hui-Hui Wang, Tamara J. Moore, Gillian H. Roehrig, Mi Sun Park
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
To gain a better understanding of teachers’ beliefs about, perceptions of, and classroom practices using STEM integration, a multi-casecase study was conducted with three middle school teachers. These teachers were purposefully selected from a pool of teachers involvedin a year-long professional development module on STEM integration to represent science, mathematics and engineering teachers. Thisstudy addresses the following research questions: (1) What are teachers’ beliefs about and perceptions of STEM integration after a yearlongteacher professional development training? and (2) What is the connection between beliefs about and perceptions of STEMintegration and teachers’ classroom practices? Data collection consisted of document analysis, classroom …

Graduate Student Perceptions Of An Effective Online Class, Steve M. Bounds
Graduate Student Perceptions Of An Effective Online Class, Steve M. Bounds
Administrative Issues Journal
Online learning is a growing trend within the higher education community. As more universities offer more graduate programs totally online for the convenience of the older student who often has a family and full-time job it is imperative that instructors give attention to what students believe constitutes an effective online class. This paper surveyed 36 graduate students to determine what they considered important in an online course. Students want a professor who uses multimedia effectively, who establishes social interaction among students, who has a well-designed online format, who has an online presence, and who is available to students.

Anomalies In The System: Is A New Educational Paradigm Upon Us?, Ed Cunliff, John Barthell
Administrative Issues Journal
In this article, we describe the palpable changes of a paradigm shift in higher education. Although this shift has been described and/or predicted elsewhere, we affirm the transition from over 30 years of collective teaching and administrative experience at a predominantly undergraduate institution (PUI) with historical roots as a state normal school. In many respects, the anomalies that Thomas Kuhn predicted in such a transition are all the more evident given our institution’s history. These anomalies include (but are not limited to) 1) the state of knowledge “ownership” (as mediated by the internet), 2) student-centered (vs. faculty-centered) educational practices, 3) …

The Leadership Triad: Identity, Integrity, Authenticity, David Henderson
Administrative Issues Journal
The purpose of this qualitative intrinsic case study was to analyze how the inner lives of fifteen educational leaders impacted their leadership practice. The common experience of the Courage To Lead (CTL) program defined the case. This case study was bound by place as the cohort of educational leaders involved in this study were all from the Seattle area in Washington State and experienced the CTL program in 2002-2004 at the same venue. The study is bounded by time in that the analysis of the participants was from the beginning of their CTL experience in November, 2002 until January, 2007. …

Revisiting The Arts In The No Child Left Behind Era, Patricia Simons
Administrative Issues Journal
Schools are responding differently to the mandates of NCLB. The purpose of this comparative case study is to investigate how two Title I elementary schools, one a member of a school reform network focused on the arts and one not a member of the network, are able to exceed AYP targets in reading and mathematics and not compromise teaching and learning in other core subjects. Included in the study is an examination of thinking skills embedded in visual arts instruction and transfer of learning to other content areas. Findings reveal that schools that are committed to the arts that are …

Reactive Quenching Of Od A (2)Σ(+) By H-2: Translational Energy Distributions For H- And D-Atom Product Channels, J. H. Lehman, Jesse Lyle Bertrand , '11, Thomas Alex Stephenson, M. I. Lester
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
The H- and D-atom products from collisional quenching of OD A (2)Sigma(+) by H-2 are characterized through Doppler spectroscopy using two-photon (2 S-2 <-<- 1 S-2) laser-induced fluorescence. Partial deuteration enables separation of the channel forming H + HOD products, which accounts for 75% of reactive quenching events, from the D + H2O product channel. The Doppler profiles, along with those reported previously for other isotopic variants, are transformed into product translational energy distributions using a robust fitting procedure based on discrete velocity basis functions. The product translational energy distribution for the H- atom channel is strongly peaked at low energy (below 0.5 eV) with a long tail extending to the energetic limit. By contrast, the D-atom channel exhibits a small peak at low translational energy with a distinctive secondary peak at higher translational energy (approximately 1.8 eV) before falling off to higher energy. In both cases, most of the available energy flows into internal excitation of the water products. Similar distributions are obtained upon reanalysis of D- and H- atom Doppler profiles, respectively, from reactive quenching of OH A (2)Sigma(+) by D-2. The sum of the translational energy distributions for H- and D- atom channels is remarkably similar to that obtained for OH A (2)Sigma(+) + H-2, where the two channels cannot be distinguished from one another. The product translational energy distributions from reactive quenching are compared with those obtained from a previous experiment performed at higher collision energy, quasiclassical trajectory calculations of the post-quenching dynamics, and a statistical model. Trade-Off Coding For Universal Qudit Cloners Motivated By The Unruh Effect, Tomas Jochym-O'Connor, Kamil Brádler, Mark M. Wilde

A triple trade-off capacity region of a noisy quantum channel provides a more complete description of its capabilities than does a single capacity formula. However, few full descriptions of a channels ability have been given due to the difficult nature of the calculation of such regionsit may demand an optimization of information-theoretic quantities over an infinite number of channel uses. This work analyses the d-dimensional Unruh channel, a noisy quantum channel which emerges in relativistic quantum information theory. We show that this channel belongs to the class of quantum channels whose capacity region requires an optimization over a single channel …

Musica Mechanica Organoedi • Musical Mechanics For The Organist, Jacob Adlung, Johann Lorenz Albrecht, Johann Friedrich Agricola, Quentin Faulkner
Zea E-Books Collection
This is the first English translation of Musica mechanica organoedi, originally published in Berlin in 1768. Its author Jacob Adlung (1699-1762) was a musician and scholar and organist at the Predigerkirche in Erfurt.
The Musica mechanica organoedi focuses primarily on the organ, from the perspective of the information an organist might need to know about the instrument; specifically, it encompasses the following:
• an evaluation, from an 18th-century perspective, of earlier works on its subject: Praetorius, Werkmeister, Mattheson, Niedt, Kircher and others
• an appreciation of the organ: its value and regard
• the history of the organ

Using Technology In A Differential Equations Course: Lessons Learned Implementing A New Paradigm, Thomas Wangler
Using Technology In A Differential Equations Course: Lessons Learned Implementing A New Paradigm, Thomas Wangler
CODEE Journal
Historically, a first course in Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) has been taught as a “methods course.” Namely, different types of differential equations are trotted out and the method of solution for each class of ODEs is presented. The student is then left to “master the method” by way of lengthy algebraic manipulations, a good dose of differential calculus, and of course, getting all the pieces of the new method done in the right order. All in all, it can be a daunting task for students and it usually does little to pique the interest or curiosity of most students. This …

First, a new path model, including the geometrical spreading and the quality factor functions, is developed for the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ) using recorded small and moderate earthquakes. The database consists of 500 broadband seismograms from 63 events of magnitude Mw 2.5 to 5.2. All the broadband stations are located within the Mississippi embayment. The vertical components of the records are processed and used to define the path effect term in the frequency range of 0.2 to 30 Hz. At distances less than 70 km, the spectral amplitudes decay as R-1; between 70 and 140 km, spectral amplitudes increase …
Educating Tomorrow's Workforce: New Mexico's Higher Education Funding Formula For Fiscal Year 2013, Jose Garcia
Educating Tomorrow's Workforce: New Mexico's Higher Education Funding Formula For Fiscal Year 2013, Jose Garcia
President Schmidly's Administration
The effort by the Higher Education Department this year to make fundamental changes to New Mexico's higher education funding formula has been both a monumental challenge and an historic opportunity. For years taxpayers in New Mexico have funded a system based on inputs, or costs, and on providing strong access to institutions for students. The result has been a college and university system that is relatively expensive in cost-per-degree compared to other states, a proliferation of new campuses and learning centers without a corresponding increase in the number of degrees and certificates, and a lack of synchronization between the kinds …
Taking “Grazing” To The Next Level, Edward N. Ballard
Taking “Grazing” To The Next Level, Edward N. Ballard
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Since the late 1980’s, producer awareness of pasture management has been increasing. A number of factors have brought this about. Mainly, economic conditions have forced producers to look at their bottom line and this has reflected the low returns from mismanagement of forages and pastures. Also, advancements in the technology of pasture management and improvement have made more intensive utilization of the forage resource more economically viable. Advances in equipment, especially fencing and water equipment, have also helped bring about the increased interest in better grassland management.
Giving An Inch, Then Taking A Mile: How The Government's Unrestricted Recovery Of Conditional Medicare Payments Destroys Plaintiffs' Chances At Compensation Through The Tort System, Nicole Miklos
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that the government's recovery of conditional Medicare payments should be limited to those settlement proceeds designated for past medical expenses, calling for a reconciliation of the government's financial interests and the plaintiffs compensatory interests in the tort system. Part I of this Note discusses the evolution of Medicare's and Medicaid's role as public medical insurance programs. This Part also examines the confusion regarding the extent of the government's reimbursement rights. Part II addresses the Supreme Court's recent decision in Arkansas Department of Health & Human Services v. Ahlborn, which held that Medicaid reimbursements are limited …

My Grazing Experience: Reflections And Observations, Russell C. Hackley
Kentucky Grazing Conference
My pastures are utilized by a beef operation consisting primarily of a small cow/calf herd (30 cows), and a stocker operation numbering from 300-350 head annually, which are grazed only, from spring until fall. These stockers are purchased, continental breed calves, weighing from 500-550 pounds. In the fall, they are sold to Laura’s Lean Beef, usually at a forward contracted price after adding 300 pounds of gain. Occasionally, the stocking includes calves not eligible for Laura’s Lean which are then sold in truckload lots through internet sales.

Whether you call it rotational grazing, intensive grazing or management intensive grazing, the economic benefits of controlling how and where your cattle graze are well documented. Increased forage utilization, greater stocking rates, greater legume persistence, reduced hay feeding and more uniform nutrient recycling are just some of the many benefits producers can take advantage of when practicing some form of controlled grazing. However, one of the greatest challenges to implementing a controlled grazing system is the delivery of stock water to the grazing animal.

An opportunity that Kentucky cattle farmers have in reducing their hay requirements is to apply nitrogen on select pastures to stockpile for fall and winter grazing. By increasing the total pasture production during this time period, the grazing season can be extended and the amount of hay required can be reduced.
Ryzup Smartgrass: Growth Promotion For Forages, S. Ray Smith
Ryzup Smartgrass: Growth Promotion For Forages, S. Ray Smith
Kentucky Grazing Conference
Whenever we discuss grazing management we emphasize how proper grazing will produce the maximum amount of plant growth. Giving forage plants an adequate rest period after each grazing event is essential to allow growth and storage of carbohydrates for the next growth cycle. With grasses, leaving leaf area after grazing allows the plant to maintain photosynthesis and regrow faster. On a more basic level though, all plants regulate growth with hormones. These hormones are termed “plant growth regulators.” Auxin controls cell division and the direction of plant growth. Gibberellic acid (abbrev. GA) has three main functions in plants: 1) stimulate …

Benefits Of "Improved" Grazing--More Important Now Than Ever!, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Grazing Conference
At this Conference twelve years ago I talked about the “Benefits of Improved Grazing”. We have had aspects of that theme at every Kentucky Grazing Conference since and also emphasized that message at 10 Heart of America Grazing Conferences and three National Grazing Conferences. With all that emphasis, why do I bring this up again and even have the nerve to say “More Important Now than Ever”? Well, the short answer is “things are different now!”

Building A Nomogram For Survey-Weighted Cox Models Using R, Marinela Capanu, Mithat Gonen
Building A Nomogram For Survey-Weighted Cox Models Using R, Marinela Capanu, Mithat Gonen
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Nomograms have become a very useful tool among clinicians as they provide individualized predictions based on the characteristics of the patient. For complex design survey data with survival outcome, Binder (1992) proposed methods for fitting survey-weighted Cox models, but to the best of our knowledge there is no available software to build a nomogram based on such models. This paper introduces R software to accomplish this goal and illustrates its use on a gastric cancer dataset. Validation and calibration routines are also included.

Local Linear Regression With Censored Data, Meng Zhao
Local Linear Regression With Censored Data, Meng Zhao
Probability & Statistics Seminar
We propose a self-consistency based method to conduct local linear estimation of mean functions for general regression models with censored data. Self-consistent estimation techniques are frequently used to obtain consistent estimation of survival functions when data are censored. Such techniques have also been proven useful for estimation of linear regression parameters in censored setting. We extend such methods to local linear estimation of the regression functions for nonparametric models. The bandwidth will be selected adaptively according to the data. Simulation studies are conducted. Some basic asymptotic results are also obtained. *This work was done jointly with Dr. K. Kulasekera, Clemson …
