The Role And Influence Of Leisure Activities And Companions During A Study Abroad Experience, Cindy Hartman Aug 2011

The Role And Influence Of Leisure Activities And Companions During A Study Abroad Experience, Cindy Hartman

All Theses

In an attempt to create rigorous study abroad programs, international educators frequently debate the design of study abroad programs. Design elements include intercultural contact, level of immersion and the balance of structured and unstructured activities (Sutton, Miller, & Rubin, 2007). International education researchers have found that unstructured free time, or leisure, during study abroad programming gives students opportunities to connect with the host culture and leads to attitude changes in how students feel about themselves as well as how they perceive the host country and its citizens (McCabe, 1994; Meyer-Lee & Warfield, 2006; Nyaupane, Teye & Paris, 2008). However, no …

The Dark Continent: Europe's Encroachment Upon English Identity In Jane Eyre And Villette, Derek Williams Aug 2011

The Dark Continent: Europe's Encroachment Upon English Identity In Jane Eyre And Villette, Derek Williams

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Although there has been a deafening critical silence regarding Charlotte Bront‘'s representation of Continental identity in Jane Eyre (1847), this thesis argues that the Continental identity, as it appears in Jane Eyre, is a collection of negative cultural traits stereotypical of the Latinate countries and Germany. By creating associations between characters that embody English national identity and those that are an emblem of Continental identity, Bront‘ de-legitimizes the notion of national identity. Furthermore, her novels, specifically Jane Eyre and Villette (1853) highlight the fact that both France and Germany, elements of the Continental identity, are a central presence in …

The Northern Ireland Conflict Feasibility Of 21st Century Reunification, Robert O'Brien

HIM 1990-2015

The State of Northern Ireland has been home to a significant amount of violence between a minority of Catholic Irish nationalists and a majority of Protestant British unionists. As a result, violence has plagued the region, with the loss of over three thousand five hundred lives during the course of three decades, colloquially known as "the troubles." In 1998, the Belfast or "Good Friday" Agreement was signed by officials from The United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland to ensure a diplomatic means of cooperation amongst the various political parties of Northern Ireland, and disarmament of paramilitary groups. However, the …

Deterrents To Participation And Retention In English As A Second Language (Esl) Programs Among Adult Hispanic Immigrants, Jose Irias Aug 2011

Deterrents To Participation And Retention In English As A Second Language (Esl) Programs Among Adult Hispanic Immigrants, Jose Irias

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study explored Hispanic immigrants' perceived deterrents to participation in, and successful completion of, ESL programs in Las Vegas, Nevada. The study used a qualitative research design, as students, teachers, and administrators from two ESL program sites were interviewed in focus groups and individual interviews. Findings suggest that Hispanic immigrants face deterrents due to both their personal situations (personal deterrents) and to ESL program characteristics (institutional deterrents). Furthermore, some institutional deterrents may be easily reduced, which may in turn increase Hispanic ESL program participation.

An Investigation Of Response To Intervention Implementation In 24 Middle Schools Located Throughout Westchester, Putnam, And Rockland Counties In New York State, Noreen Urso Aug 2011

An Investigation Of Response To Intervention Implementation In 24 Middle Schools Located Throughout Westchester, Putnam, And Rockland Counties In New York State, Noreen Urso

Education Doctoral

Response to Intervention (RTI) was a major change to the way school districts across the country provided intervention to students at risk of lagging behind in the areas of reading, math, and behavior with a focus on early reading instruction, changing the way all school districts provided academic intervention to students and how they identified students with learning disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), 2004 provided legislative requirements that all public school districts across the country provide research based reading instruction prior to referring a student to be considered as having a learning disability. Although the federal government …

Motivation And Attitudes Towards Learning English: A Study Of International Undergraduates In Malaysia / Gao Yanchao, Yanchao Gao

Student Works (2010-2019)

It has been proven that attitudes and motivation are important for a learner in second language learning. This study explores the attitudes and motivation of international undergraduates who are non-native English speakers towards learning English in universities of Malaysia. 64 undergraduates from three different universities in Malaysia are chosen as participants. Gardner's Socio-education Model (2005) is used as the framework in this study. The use of questionnaire as an instrument in this study was adapted from Gardner's AMTB (2005). The questionnaire is used to elicit undergraduates' information and to obtain their responses towards learning English in Malaysia. In this analysis, …

Introducing Dialogue Back Into The Classroom: Blending Narrative Storytelling In Social Studies, Eun Kyoung Yu Aug 2011

Introducing Dialogue Back Into The Classroom: Blending Narrative Storytelling In Social Studies, Eun Kyoung Yu

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate influences of Blending Narrative Storytelling (BNS) on collaborators’ perceptions of learning in social studies (i.e., U.S. History) and themselves. One social studies teacher and one of her mainstream ninth grade social studies class with twenty-one students collaborated in the study.

The social studies teacher, in consultation with the researcher, provided instruction incorporating the BNS approach (Harris, 2007). The process provided an opportunity for all collaborators to explore and construct their understanding of themes in social studies by generation and sharing in dialogue of their personal stories in relation to the themes within …

The Children Left Behind: An Evaluation Of A Reading Intervention Program For Upper Elementary Students, Tahira Dupree Chase

Education Doctoral

The landmark NCLB (2001) has directed great attention and increased awareness of early literacy instruction. Still, less attention has been paid to older students who struggle to read. School districts must identify best practices and strategies to remediate students who struggle to read. The purpose of this 30-week mixed methods research was to examine the effectiveness of a reading intervention program, My Sidewalks, to improve pre-adolescent students’ reading skills and impro ve their positive attitudes toward academic and recreational reading. Reading skills were measured using the Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation. Students’ positive attitudes were measured using the Elementary …

An Electrophysiological Investigation Of The Cognitive Processes Underlying Provoked Aggression In Humans, Jennifer Renee Fanning Aug 2011

An Electrophysiological Investigation Of The Cognitive Processes Underlying Provoked Aggression In Humans, Jennifer Renee Fanning

Dissertations

Recently, the event-related potential (ERP) technique has been applied to questions of social information processing. Several studies have examined standard and social information processing variables in aggressive individuals, but little is known about the neurophysiological processes that take place in real-time during an aggressive encounter. In this study, 48 men and women high and low in aggression history exchanged noise blasts of varying intensity with a (fictitious) opponent in a modified version of a well-validated laboratory-controlled behavioral measure of aggression, the Taylor Reaction-time Task (Taylor, 1967), while ERPs were simultaneously being recorded at scalp sites. Mixed model ANOVAs were used …

The Black Plumb Line: Re-Evaluating Race And Africanist Images In Non-Black Authored American Texts, Lashondra Vanessa Robinson Aug 2011

The Black Plumb Line: Re-Evaluating Race And Africanist Images In Non-Black Authored American Texts, Lashondra Vanessa Robinson

Dissertations

This study evaluates Africanisms (representations of racialized or ethnicized blackness) within three contemporary non-black authors’ texts: Jewish American Saul Bellow’s novel Henderson the Rain King, white southerner Melinda Haynes’ novel Mother of Pearl, and Nyurican poet Victor Hernández Cruz’s works “Mesa Blanca” and “White Table.” Though not entirely unproblematic, each selection somehow redefines black identity and agency to challenge denigrated representations of Africanist people and culture. In the process, each author subverts faulty components of American myths of racial purity, particularly stratifying black-white dualisms that promote whiteness, racial supremacy, and resulting undue privilege. This study also traces how Bellow, Haynes …

Mormon Contributions To Young Adult Literature, Toni Pilcher Aug 2011

Mormon Contributions To Young Adult Literature, Toni Pilcher

Student Works

Mormon authors are making big splashes in the world of young adult (YA) literature, a relatively young genre that is targeted at readers from age 12 to age 18. Since 1967, when the American Library Association officially recognized YA literature as separate from children's books, writers and publishers have been trying to define the genre. It is, in a sense, coming of age. Generally, to be considered YA, a book has to have a teenage protagonist in situations with which a teenage reader can identify. Like literature for adults, there are a few limitations to subject and theme, but unlike …

An Exploration Of Concise Redundancy In Online Multimedia Learning, Yu-Feng Wu Aug 2011

An Exploration Of Concise Redundancy In Online Multimedia Learning, Yu-Feng Wu

Dissertations

With the rapid growth of multimedia in education, the importance of investigating the effect of redundancy, repeating instructional messages to enhance conceptualization in instructional material design, is becoming more important. Various studies have been conducted recently regarding the effects of different forms of redundancy. A multimedia lesson presenting concurrent on-screen text, still graphics or animations, and narration is a typical setting in redundancy research. Concise redundancy is the revision of the on-screen text into a concise form which is presented to the learners concurrently with visualizations and narration. The purpose of this study was to investigate, while controlling for spatial …

An Extensionalist Approach To Ontological Commitment: Why Quine Is Mostly Right, William Felix Suttle Iii Aug 2011

An Extensionalist Approach To Ontological Commitment: Why Quine Is Mostly Right, William Felix Suttle Iii

Master's Theses

A criterion of ontological commitment is a formal method for determining what objects or entities a theory says exists. The most famous criterion of ontological commitment was developed by W.V.O. Quine. However, Quine's criterion has been attacked for presumably not meeting his own standards for an acceptable theory. After explaining the motivation and details of Quine's criterion, I will tum to the prominent objections against his theory. I will argue that there are problems both with Quine's formulation of his criterion, as well as the interpretation of Quine's criterion as presented by his objectors. In response to these issues, I …

The Role Of Moral Exemplars In Stanley Hauer's Ethics, Timothy William Walker Aug 2011

The Role Of Moral Exemplars In Stanley Hauer's Ethics, Timothy William Walker

Master's Theses

This thesis is on the virtue ethics of Stanley Hauerwas, with particular focus on the role of moral exemplars in his theory. Hauerwas emphasizes the role of what are called "moral exemplars" in his virtue ethics. These are people or characters of narratives that best exemplify virtue. A theory is exemplarist if the moral concepts of the theory are defined in reference to an exemplary person, moral knowledge is gained from knowledge of an exemplar, and moral exemplars are necessary for one's learning to be moral. This definition reflects the three types of roles exemplars could play in a moral …

Composing @Play, Jonathan Lashley Aug 2011

Composing @Play, Jonathan Lashley

All Theses

Modern college students traverse the boundaries of traditional literacy daily. Maturing alongside Web 2.0 and multimodal social networking, these young people tweet, blog, email, film, photograph, illustrate, hyperlink, and compose their lives regardless of formal instruction. Therefore rhetorically analyzing a student's recreational play with image, video, audio, and oral mediums often proves helpful for writing instructors who wish to better mentor and engage the communicative capacities of those born in the late 20th century and after. Yet few educators have actively pursued this line of inquiry over the last couple of decades. Many continue to favor traditional pairing of academic …

A Rhetorical Approach To Cultural Literacies Across Media, Randy Nichols Aug 2011

A Rhetorical Approach To Cultural Literacies Across Media, Randy Nichols

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
A Rhetorical Approach to Cultural Literacies Across Media finds exigency in the challenges presented to students and teachers by the growing emphasis on globalization, and by the increasing demands for literacy in new media. My research develops a theoretical model for a rhetorical reading of cultural ―texts‖ in the context of cross-cultural learning experiences. This model is built on the metaphor of ―stolons,‖ those botanical strands that serve to propagate plants across wide areas into a single woven organism, i.e., a lawn. Approaching ―culture‖ as a complex organic system of a multiplicity of sources, this model of literacies evaluates …
