Curating Cultures: An Empirical Inquiry, Toni Laviece Calder
Curating Cultures: An Empirical Inquiry, Toni Laviece Calder
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The last twenty-five years have witnessed not only a veritable explosion of critical discourses across the entire gamut of academic disciplines, but also the virtual inseparability that characterizes their contemporary entanglement with one another and within the field of art history. Moreover, it is safe to say that each and every one of those fields of inquiry has made its mark on the discourse of non-Western art in some way. But while the post-colonial writer may address the visual arts and their involvement in Western cultural hegemony, or the curator of an exhibition might quote Said, or the catalogue might …
Sentence Adverbs In The Kingdom Of Agree, Chih-Hsiang Shu
Sentence Adverbs In The Kingdom Of Agree, Chih-Hsiang Shu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation offers a novel account of the syntax of sentence adverbs. The need for a new account is clear from the lack of descriptive coverage and theoretical coherence in current work on adverbial syntax. Descriptively, the majority of work has so far neglected the fact that sentence adverbs behave syntactically like typical focusing adverbs. There has been no coherent and let alone comprehensive syntactic analysis of various focus- sensitive adverbs in generative grammar. The main proposal I make is that sentence adverbs, as well as focusing adverbs in general, are `inflectional affixes writ large'. In other words, sentence adverbs …

Reading Assessments For Students With Autism, Cassie Pruitt
Education Masters
This study aims to compare the use of standardized reading assessments and informal reading assessments in students with autism. I assert that informal reading assessments provide the most benefits for both the student with autism and the teacher, while aligning with the standardized Data was collected through the assessment and observation of a high school student with autism. The study reveals that both types of assessment evaluate reading level, structural elements, and cognitive components. assessment incorporates student interest. However, only the informal The use of the informal assessment allows for flexibility and more diagnostic data for the teacher to plan …
Initial Mlu Predicts The Relative Efficacy Of Two Grammatical Treatments In Preschoolers With Specific Language Impairments, Paul J. Yoder, Dennis L. Molfese, Elizabeth Gardner
Initial Mlu Predicts The Relative Efficacy Of Two Grammatical Treatments In Preschoolers With Specific Language Impairments, Paul J. Yoder, Dennis L. Molfese, Elizabeth Gardner
Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Purpose—We sought to confirm predictions based on past findings that pre-treatment mean length of utterance (MLU) would predict which of two grammatical treatments would best facilitate generalized and maintained grammatical development in preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI).
Method—The participants were 57 preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI). A randomized group experiment was used. The two grammatical treatments were Broad Target Recasts (BTR) and Milieu Language Teaching (MLT). MLU was assessed at Time 1 in two conversational language samples. Growth rate of productive grammar was quantified using growth curve modeling on the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) from …
Tautonymic Sights And Sounds, Susan Thorpe
Tautonymic Sights And Sounds, Susan Thorpe
Word Ways
Most tautonymic words, as well as consisting of a repeated letter/group of letters, are also phonetically tautonymic, the 2 identical letter groups having identical pronunciations. On the other hand, there exist tautonymic words with a difference in pronunciation between the 2 identical letter groups. The degree of audible difference varies. it may be obvious as in ISIS, a river in Oxford, and in the TSETSE fly; or the difference may be more subtle.

Like Schubert's symphony number 8 in B minor, the listings in the following quiz are unfinished. More precisely, each of the twenty-five questions consists of a pair of word fragments from which the same final quartet of letters is missing. For instance, if LUL/WAL appeared below, then appending the letters LABY to the end of each would reveal the words LULLABY and WALLABY. Appropriately, score four points for any duo which is identified correctly.
Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford
Re-Visioning The Semantic And Semiotic Registers In The Study Of Culture And Religion, Gary S. Bedford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term `God' may be understood as the desire for the complete epistemological condition of thought; language expresses this condition in statements of `meaning.' `Religion' expresses this desire in texts and ritual practice which may be examined by in academic study; however, because the `third term' of religio is understood as the condition of being `bounded to or by,' the study of religion is itself bounded to or by this desire for the completion of thought. This desire cannot be understood as an `alterity' of thought but is rather the internal native or `alter-native' condition of thought itself. …

Epigrafía Del Apócrifo. Revisión Del Juicio Colonial, Carlos M. López
Modern Languages Faculty Research
The location of Latin-American pre-colonial era texts in a World-taxonomy of art is very problematic from the perspective of Western axiology. The concept of ‘literature’ was defined at the end of the 18th century by thinkers of the Enlightenment, particularly by Herder, Lessing, Kant and Hegel. They invented the paradigm that established the standard that written printed text, especially those on phonetic systems, are the highest expression of human spirit. According to this paradigm Europe, and particularly Prussia, were the ones to have reached the summit of History; ergo, European written-printed texts were defined as the true ‘literature’. On the …

Perception Of Social Presence In Asynchronous And Synchronous Online Discussion From The Perspective Of Native And Non-Native Speaker, Abdullah A. Alruhaimi
Perception Of Social Presence In Asynchronous And Synchronous Online Discussion From The Perspective Of Native And Non-Native Speaker, Abdullah A. Alruhaimi
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The technology innovation of telecommunication gave confidence to educational institutions to substitute some of their courses from traditional courses into virtual ones. This switch in education inspired globalization. The learners use either synchronous or asynchronous communication tools to interact with each other. Most previous studies in this field show that social presence is correlated with learner achievement satisfaction and interaction. So the researcher measured the level of social presence for both groups of learners, native and non-native speakers, across both types of online communication, synchronous and asynchronous communication. The researcher conducted a 2x2 split-plot ANOVA design with repeated measure for …

How Can Prewriting Strategies Benefit Students?, Shannon O'Mealia
Education Masters
This study examined the benefits of using strategy instruction during the prewriting stage of the writing process. Research was conducted in the home of 10 year old twin brothers as they were introduced to three types of prewriting strategies: brainstorming, graphical representations, and plan, organize, write. Data was collected through student questionnaires, student writing samples, and researcher observations. The findings showed that strategy instruction in the prewriting stage improves student writing in terms of content, organization, and voice, and also improves student’s motivation and creativity towards writing. In order to be beneficial to student writing, educators need to implement instruction …

Delayed Beginnings, Jump Start? The Combined Effects On Early Literacy Of Age At Entry Into Kindergarten With Experiences Prior To Entry, Kathryn A. Wilson
Delayed Beginnings, Jump Start? The Combined Effects On Early Literacy Of Age At Entry Into Kindergarten With Experiences Prior To Entry, Kathryn A. Wilson
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
As the first compulsory grade in the elementary school program, kindergarten is designed to prepare students for the numbered grades. Students are eligible for entrance into kindergarten if they turn five before a state-determined cut-off date. These dates range from the June before the start of school until the January after. Because some states do not require that children attend kindergarten until 6, 7, or even 8 years old, some parents are delaying their child’s entry into the program on the assumption that their child will benefit from an extra year to grow cognitively, physically, and emotionally. The result is …
Non-Native Perception And Production Of Foreign Sequences, Jiwon Hwang
Non-Native Perception And Production Of Foreign Sequences, Jiwon Hwang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A major question in the study of second language learning is the extent to which mispronunciations originate in the inability to correctly perceive vs. the inability to correctly produce foreign language structures. The goal of this thesis is to determine the extent to which second language (L2) learners' pronunciation errors reflect errors in perception or gestural mistiming, by investigating Korean L2 learners' production and perception of English stop-nasal sequences. Such sequences are prohibited in Korean, where a stop before a nasal obligatorily undergoes nasalization (/kukmul/-->[kuŋmul] `soup'). In production experiments where Korean L2 learners pronounced English nonsense words containing those …

Mood Of Metaphor: Tropicality And Time In The Philippine Poetic, Jayson Pilapil Jacobo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
When the trope is exhilarated and enervated by a milieu, which in this case is tropical, the category of mood must be apprehended as a theoretical opportunity where a phenomenology of the time that it takes for the imagination to work through the limits of the earth could be delineated. What is at the heart of this undertaking is to draw the history and theory of metaphor in the Philippines nearer to its original point of reference--nativity, where time is posited as self-generative in its commencement, but also potentially moving towards the modern, in spite of this anterior existence. The …

The Phonetics Of Stress Manifestation: Segmental Variation, Syllable Constituency And Rhythm, Miran Kim
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation investigates how lexical stress in Spanish is phonetically manifested within the syllable, and how stress manifestation interacts with other prosodic effects, such as phrasal accent and initial word-boundary effects. One of the challenges in the study of prosody is the fact that multiple prosodic factors induce variation in a limited number of phonetic dimensions. For this reason, results in the literature have often been inconclusive or conflicting. The disentanglement of these prosodic effects will help us understand the complex nature of prosody. The results of this study show that stress effects can be identified independently of phrasal level …

(An)Other Gender : A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of War-Torn France And Great Britain In Which Simone De Beauvoir And Virginia Woolf Redefine "Woman"., Anna Stamp 1979-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a cross-cultural analysis of France and Great Britain during both the First World War and World War II in which Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf redefined "woman." Utilizing New Historicism, the first chapter begins with a focus on the evolution of the two cultures from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century France and Great Britain and discusses the ways in which the women's movement was both perpetuated and hindered by the volatile political and cultural climates of these two countries. The second chapter discusses the traditional woman as she was viewed in both French and British …

Code-Switching And Language Change In Tunisia, Lotfi Sayahi
Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship
This article quantitatively studies the patterns of Tunisian Arabic/French code-switching and the possible implications for contact-induced change in the Tunisian dialect. The purpose is to account for the extent of the occurrence of code-switching across gender lines and levels of education and assess its role in the interference from French into Arabic, both at the lexical and structural levels. Recorded semi-directed sociolinguistic interviews with twelve speakers are examined for type and frequency of code-switching and use of French borrowings.
Results show that education plays a role in distinguishing the group with a higher education from the group with only a …

This thesis details the process of the creation of the new script, Your Last Friend, Inc., a play about two conmen who realize that selling death isn't nearly as easy as selling life to the hopeless. It follows the many evolutions of the script; from the first version developed in the Graduate Playwriting class all the way to the final production at Boar's Head Players 2010 New Play Showcase at Nadine Baum Studios at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The playwright's choice to add humor to a serious topic is challenged, the characters actions face outside opinions, and …

The Motivated Formation Of Economic Preferences, Christopher David Johnston
The Motivated Formation Of Economic Preferences, Christopher David Johnston
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Recent research has argued that ideological orientations in the American mass public are, to a large extent, rooted in psychological dispositions related to differential needs for social order, epistemic certainty, and existential security. Citizens high in such needs tend to be conservative in their political outlook, as conservative policies offer institutional stability and a justification of the status quo, while those low in such needs, in their comfort with ambiguity and change, find liberalism appealing. In its focus on a single ideological dimension, however, such work fails to provide a full account of ideology in the American mass public, which, …

Language Of The Legal Process: An Analysis Of Interactions In The Syariah Court, A. Hashim
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
This study examines interactions from trials in the Syariah court in Malaysia. It focuses on the types of questioning, the choice of language and the linguistic resources employed in this particular context. In the discourse of law, questioning has been a prominent concern particularly in cross-examination and can be considered one of the key communicative practices in legal encounters. Usually based on expectations and assumptions about what the responses are likely to be, an extended question and answer dialogue can allocate or remove blame and make a party appear trustworthy or unreliable. Questions which are supportive of witnesses can simply …

Where The Evidence And Expert Opinion Meet: A Review Of Open-Water Recreational Safety Messages, Kevin Moran, Linda Quan, Richard Franklin, Elizabeth Bennett
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Open water aquatic recreation is a significant cause of drowning, especially in developed countries that have easy access to aquatic environments. To simplify the plethora of safety messages promoted worldwide, 18 experts from 12 countries formed the International Task Force on Open Water Drowning Prevention (ITFDP) and published 16 generic, non-boating, open water safety messages. This paper examines the supporting evidence for the messages and makes recommendations for future research. A systematic review was undertaken of the literature published from 1990 to 2010. Task force members were also asked to provide the Secretariat with organizational recommendations or the evidence base …

Children's Relative Clause Markers In Two Non-Mainstream Dialects Of English, Janna B. Oetting, Brandi L. Newkirk
Faculty Publications
We examined children's productions of mainstream and non-mainstream relative clause markers (e.g. that, who, which, what, where, Ø) in African American English (AAE) and Southern White English (SWE) as a function of three linguistic variables (syntactic role of the marker, humanness of the antecedent and adjacency of the noun phrase head). The data were language samples from 99 typically developing 46-year-olds: 61 spoke AAE and 38 spoke SWE. The majority of the children's relative clauses included mainstream markers. Non-mainstream markers were rare, with 36% involving Ø subjects and 2% involving what. The children produced who exclusively as subjects and with …

A Som+ Diagnostic System For Network Intrusion Detection, Chester Louis Langin
Dissertations
This research created a new theoretical Soft Computing (SC) hybridized network intrusion detection diagnostic system including complex hybridization of a 3D full color Self-Organizing Map (SOM), Artificial Immune System Danger Theory (AISDT), and a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS). This SOM+ diagnostic archetype includes newly defined intrusion types to facilitate diagnostic analysis, a descriptive computational model, and an Invisible Mobile Network Bridge (IMNB) to collect data, while maintaining compatibility with traditional packet analysis. This system is modular, multitaskable, scalable, intuitive, adaptable to quickly changing scenarios, and uses relatively few resources.
