Culture, Dissent, And The State: The Example Of Commonwealth African Marriage Law, Johanna E. Bond

Scholarly Articles

This is an explosive time for those seeking to define the meaning and parameters of marriage. The subject has generated heated debate worldwide. In June 2010, the European Court of Human Rights declined to extend marriage rights to a gay Austrian couple, but the Court carefully laid the foundation for the recognition of such rights when a European consensus on the issue emerges. In July 2010, Argentina extended to same-sex couples the right to marry, joining nine other countries that legally recognize same-sex couples' right to marry. In August 2010, a United States district judge struck down a California ban …

Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant Jan 2011

Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant

Theses

Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is a bi-segmented, double stranded RNA virus that causes high mortality in young salmonid fish worldwide. As an obligate intracellular parasite, the first stage of the IPNV infectious cycle is the binding of the virus to a receptor in the host cell membrane. Recently, research has focused on identifying the IPNV receptor, and several scientists have reported binding of IPNV to a protein of approximately 220-250 kDa. The focus of this research was to investigate and reaffirm the identity of the IPNV receptor(s) for IPNV serotypes VR-299 and Sp in Chinook Salmon Embryo (CHSE-214) cells …

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Each summer Yellowstone Wolf Project staff visit den sites to monitor the success of wolf reproduction and pup rearing behavior. For the purposes of wolf monitoring, Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is divided into two study areas, the northern range and the interior, each distinguished by their ecological and physiographical differences. The 1,000 square kilometer northern range, characterized by lower elevations (1,500–2,200 m), serves as prime winter habitat for ungulates and supports a higher density of wolves than the interior (20–99 wolves/1,000 km2 versus 2–11 wolves/1,000 km2). The interior of the park encompasses 7,991 square kilometers, is higher …

Great technical improvements have been made in dengue DNA vaccine constructs and trials are underway to study these in the clinic. The scope of this review is to highlight the rich history of this vaccine platform and the work in dengue DNA vaccines accomplished by scientists at the Naval Medical Research Center. This work resulted in the only dengue DNA vaccine tested in a clinical …

Preparing The New Graduate Nurse Entering Critical Or Progressive Care Practice Areas: What Is The Effect Of Blended Orientation Approaches On Their Level Of Self-Confidence And Satisfaction With Current Orientation Methods?, Jennifer L. Forbes Jan 2011

Preparing The New Graduate Nurse Entering Critical Or Progressive Care Practice Areas: What Is The Effect Of Blended Orientation Approaches On Their Level Of Self-Confidence And Satisfaction With Current Orientation Methods?, Jennifer L. Forbes

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

The transition from student nurse to professional nurse is often difficult for the new graduate especially if transitioning into critical or progressive care areas of practice. It is imperative for new graduates to receive a clinical orientation that meets their educational and transitional needs. The orientation process should provide them with a strong foundation in critical or progressive care practices. Educators are challenged to provide educational opportunities while accommodating diverse learning needs and continuing to maintain competency that ensures the highest quality of patient care and improved patient care outcomes.

New graduate nurses hired into the critical or progressive care …

The Nurse's Knowledge Of Blood Conservation As A Part Of Blood Management, Lindsey Putnam Austin Jan 2011

The Nurse's Knowledge Of Blood Conservation As A Part Of Blood Management, Lindsey Putnam Austin

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Medicine has historically regarded blood transfusion as an integral component of major surgery or illness. However, clinical studies have shown that allogeneic blood transfusions are associated with increased morbidity and decreased survival. Knowledge of this research and the concepts of blood conservation so as to avoid unnecessary blood transfusions is needed in order to deliver holistic care and serve as patient advocate. This knowledge reaches every specialty of nursing care.

This study of the nurse's knowledge of blood conservation as a part of blood management utilizes The Conservation Model developed by Myra E. Levine in 1973. Levine's work is a …

Evaluation Of Syracuse Healthy Start’S Program For Abnormal Flora Management To Reduce Preterm Birth Among Pregnant Women, Emilia H. Koumans, Sandra D. Lane, Richard Aubry, Kathleen Demott, Noah Webster, Brooke A. Levandowski Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Syracuse Healthy Start’S Program For Abnormal Flora Management To Reduce Preterm Birth Among Pregnant Women, Emilia H. Koumans, Sandra D. Lane, Richard Aubry, Kathleen Demott, Noah Webster, Brooke A. Levandowski

Falk College Research Center

Randomized trials of bacterial vaginosis (BV) treatment among pregnant women to reduce preterm birth have had mixed results. Among non-pregnant women, BV recurs frequently after treatment. Randomized trials of early BV treatment for pregnant women in which recurrence was retreated have shown promise in reducing preterm birth. Syracuse’s Healthy Start (SHS) program began in 1997; in 1998 prenatal care providers for pregnant women living in high infant mortality zip codes were encouraged to screen for abnormal vaginal flora at the first prenatal visit. Vaginal swabs were sent to a referral hospital laboratory for Gram staining and interpretation. SHS encouraged providers …

Age-Corrected Beta Cell Mass Following Onset Of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Correlates With Plasma C-Peptide In Humans, David J. Klinke Ii Jan 2011

Age-Corrected Beta Cell Mass Following Onset Of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Correlates With Plasma C-Peptide In Humans, David J. Klinke Ii

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

The inability to produce insulin endogenously precipitates the clinical symptoms of type 1 diabetes mellitus. However, the dynamic trajectory of beta cell destruction following onset remains unclear. Using model-based inference, the severity of beta cell destruction at onset decreases with age where, on average, a 40% reduction in beta cell mass was sufficient to precipitate clinical symptoms at 20 years of age. While plasma C-peptide provides a surrogate measure of endogenous insulin production post-onset, it is unclear as to whether plasma C-peptide represents changes in beta cell mass or beta cell function. The objective of this paper was to …

We determined the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of enterococci isolated from raw foods of animal origin. All samples were positive for enterococci. The lowest count of enterococci was found in pork (2.00 log CFU/cm2), while bryndza cheese contained the highest count (4.99 log CFU/g). Among the 349 Enterococcus isolates, 49% were E. faecalis, 29% E. faecium, and 13% Enterococcus spp. Tetracycline and gentamicin resistance was the most common. We found the highest tetracycline resistance levels (91%) in isolates from poultry samples. The isolates from the poultry samples also displayed multidrug resistance to all antibiotics tested. The most common …

Left Knee Prosthesis-Related Mycobacterium Goodii Infection, Sharjeel Ahmad, Rashida A. Khakoo

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are increasingly being recognized as important human pathogens. We present the case of a 44-year-old non-diabetic male who underwent left total knee arthroplasty for degenerative arthritis after trauma. He developed left knee swelling and progressively worsening pain over the next 4 weeks. He was referred for treatment using whirlpool baths and developed a blister at the surgical incision site. Repeated aspirations of the left knee failed to show any growth of organism on routine cultures. He finally underwent explantation of the left knee prosthesis with antimicrobial spacer placement 4 months later. Cultures of three different intra-operative specimens turned …

Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications

The potential for smallpox to be disseminated in a bioterror attack has prompted development of new, safer smallpox vaccination strategies. We designed and evaluated immunogenicity and efficacy of a T-cell epitope vaccine based on conserved and antigenic vaccinia/variola sequences, identified using bioinformatics and immunological methods. Vaccination in HLA transgenic mice using a DNA-prime/peptide-boost strategy elicited significant T cell responses to multiple epitopes. No antibody response pre-challenge was observed, neither against whole vaccinia antigens nor vaccine epitope peptides. Remarkably, 100% of vaccinated mice survived lethal vaccinia challenge, demonstrating that protective immunity to vaccinia does not require B cell priming.
