Fathers' Perceptions Regarding Parenting And Discipline Based On Community Norms And Practices, Anna Marie Yelick Jan 2011

Fathers' Perceptions Regarding Parenting And Discipline Based On Community Norms And Practices, Anna Marie Yelick

Wayne State University Theses

Determining fathers' perceptions of community norms on discipline is paramount to understanding how to develop social work interventions that target fathers' parenting behaviors. Understanding why a father engages in one form of discipline over another in child rearing and understanding how fathers view their parenting role is important when discussing implementation of parenting programs. This study was conducted using qualitative focus groups comprised of men ranging from late adolescents to mid-adulthood. The majority of the men were lower economic status, African American fathers recruited from a human services agency in Detroit. One-hour long, semi-structured focus group discussions were content coded, …

Outcomes, Adaptations And Performance: A Local Evaluation Of Shelter Plus Care, Sloan R. Herrick

Wayne State University Theses

Individual outcomes and barriers to program implementation for Shelter Plus Care are presented in an exploratory study investigating the impact of a permanent supportive housing program - Shelter Plus Care - in Detroit, a city that faces unique challenges and complicated needs. Individual outcomes including improved housing stability, increased income and reports of enhanced self-sufficiency suggest the program is achieving the goals projected by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Despite positive outcomes for individual consumers, barriers to program implementation emerged as thematic problems for organizations running the program. The study provides recommendations that may increase the …

Neuropathological Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease: The Relationship Between Postmortem Assessment, Cognitive Function And Functional Status In Centenarians, Emily Elizabeth Richardson Jan 2011

Neuropathological Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease: The Relationship Between Postmortem Assessment, Cognitive Function And Functional Status In Centenarians, Emily Elizabeth Richardson

Wayne State University Theses

Several sets of neuropathological criteria have been used for the postmortem diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), but few studies have examined these criteria in the oldest old. For this study, we examined a sample of centenarians, all of whom received AD assessments using four different neuropathological criteria: Khachaturian, Braak and Braak, CERAD, and NIA-R. Findings indicate that NIA-R criteria differed significantly from CERAD and Khachaturian criteria. In addition, NIA-R and CERAD criteria predicted performance on the MMSE and three FOME indices; Braak and Braak criteria predicted performance on the MMSE and one FOME index. Finally, we examined the relationship between …

Effects Of Dietary Fat Saturation On Lipoprotein Metabolism In Rodents And Humans, Deepinder Kaur Jan 2011

Effects Of Dietary Fat Saturation On Lipoprotein Metabolism In Rodents And Humans, Deepinder Kaur

Wayne State University Dissertations

Consumption of trans-fatty acids (tFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) have been associated with higher incidence of coronary heart disease. Experimental and observational data suggests that consumption of PHVO containing tFA, like SFA leads to increased total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) but compared to tFA, SFA raises HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). An attempt to eliminate PHVO from the food supply has resulted in the need to find alternatives which despite their higher dietary fat saturation as compared to naturally occurring vegetable oils, may be preferable to PHVO. However, amongst SFA, the effects on plasma lipoproteins are variable. Thus, we hypothesized that specific …

Analysis Of The Streptococcal Cpsa Protein In Dna-Binding And Regulation Of Capsule And Cell Wall Maintenance, Brett R. Hanson Jan 2011

Analysis Of The Streptococcal Cpsa Protein In Dna-Binding And Regulation Of Capsule And Cell Wall Maintenance, Brett R. Hanson

Wayne State University Dissertations

The systemic pathogens Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) and Streptococcus pneumoniae remain a significant threat to human health worldwide. The ability of these organisms to cause systemic disease is compounded by the production of a polysaccharide capsule that provides immune evasion function. The production of the polysaccharide capsule in systemic streptococcal pathogens is controlled in part by the membrane bound protein CpsA. These studies analyze the contribution of CpsA to regulation of capsule level in the model aquatic pathogen Streptococcus iniae and human specific pathogen GBS, and how this regulation affects virulence in in-vitro, ex-vivo, and in-vivo models of pathogenesis. We have …

Locating And Extracting Acoustic And Neural Signals, Na Zhu Jan 2011

Locating And Extracting Acoustic And Neural Signals, Na Zhu

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation presents innovate methodologies for locating, extracting, and separating multiple incoherent sound sources in three-dimensional (3D) space; and applications of the time reversal (TR) algorithm to pinpoint the hyper active neural activities inside the brain auditory structure that are correlated to the tinnitus pathology. Specifically, an acoustic modeling based method is developed for locating arbitrary and incoherent sound sources in 3D space in real time by using a minimal number of microphones, and the Point Source Separation (PSS) method is developed for extracting target signals from directly measured mixed signals. Combining these two approaches leads to a novel technology …

Community-Based Participatory Research With Traditional And Indigenous Communities Of The Americas: Historical Context And Future Directions, Maria Pontes Ferreira, Fidji Gendron Jan 2011

Community-Based Participatory Research With Traditional And Indigenous Communities Of The Americas: Historical Context And Future Directions, Maria Pontes Ferreira, Fidji Gendron

Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an investigative orientation that is gaining prominence in the fields of population and public health and among underserved community groups, such as traditional and indigenous peoples of the Americas. In this model, research questions are approached in a collaborative fashion with the community. The community of interest, not individual participants, is the research unit. Trained community members participate in the research process in an equitable fashion as full collaborators, not just as 'research participants'. Academic and other scientists, on the other hand, are not just 'objective investigators' but also active learners in this process. Cultural …

A Computer Simulation Based Evaluation Of Port Emergency Preparedness And Response Evacuation Plans For Predictable Natural Disasters, Maurice Antoine Jackson Jan 2011

A Computer Simulation Based Evaluation Of Port Emergency Preparedness And Response Evacuation Plans For Predictable Natural Disasters, Maurice Antoine Jackson

Theses

Given the approach of a hurricane, U.S. port decision makers are required to follow a set of policies and procedures to evacuate the infrastructure. The effectiveness of such policies can determine the level of damage that the port will experience and have implications on its recovery time. Therefore, the objective of this research is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of port emergency response and evacuation plans to predictable natural disasters, such as hurricanes. In this research, a computer-based simulation is built to capture a complex port environment in the normal operations and during the hurricane response procedure. Due to …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Benzimidazoles And Aminothiazoles As Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Cdk5/P25, Prashi Jain Jan 2011

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Benzimidazoles And Aminothiazoles As Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Cdk5/P25, Prashi Jain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel CDK5/p25 small molecule inhibitors. Cyclin dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a proline directed serine/threonine kinase which plays an important role in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). CDK5/p25 has been implicated in hyperphosphorylation of tau protein which forms neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), a contributing factor to the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Based on the deposited X-ray crystal structure of CDK5/p25 with a non-selective CDK inhibitor R-Roscovitine (PDB ID: 1UNL), eight series of novel compounds with a benzimidazole core were designed, synthesized and tested as inhibitors of CDK5/p25. An efficient …

Examining Copyright Exemptions For Web Mashups In The International Context: Applying American Constitutional Considerations As Guideposts For The Trips Three-Step Test, James De Los Reyes Jan 2011

Examining Copyright Exemptions For Web Mashups In The International Context: Applying American Constitutional Considerations As Guideposts For The Trips Three-Step Test, James De Los Reyes

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The proliferation of web mashup websites, which combine information from various online sources into new integrated works, has spurred the emergence of a mashup industry and a culture that uses the medium as a new avenue for expression and communication. By remixing content and presenting information in new ways, web mashups can benefit their creators, consumers, and even the public at large. However, concerns regarding possible copyright infringement have also become more prominent as web mashup creators incorporate greater amounts of online data and content-which may belong to other copyright holders-into their composite works with increasing ease. To determine whether …

Rectifying Wrongful Convictions: May A Lawyer Reveal Her Client's Confidences To Rectify The Wrongful Conviction Of Another, James E. Moliterno Jan 2011

Rectifying Wrongful Convictions: May A Lawyer Reveal Her Client's Confidences To Rectify The Wrongful Conviction Of Another, James E. Moliterno

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Awareness is increasing that the U.S. criminal justice system produces convictions of the innocent. Currently, except in two states (Alaska and Massachusetts), lawyer confidentiality law prevents a lawyer from revealing client information to rectify the wrongful conviction of an innocent. An interpretation of the standard future harms exception, especially with the Restatement illustration gloss, may yield permission to reveal the client's information and rectify the wrongful conviction. But that result is far from certain and is weighted down with significant factor-weighing to determine if the wrongly convicted is suffering "substantial bodily harm." Despite a broader view that would dictate revelation …

No Match For The Police: An Analysis Of Miranda's Problematic Application To Juvenile Defendants, Zoe Overbeck Jan 2011

No Match For The Police: An Analysis Of Miranda's Problematic Application To Juvenile Defendants, Zoe Overbeck

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In Fare v. Michael C. and Yarborough v. Alvarado, the Supreme Court affirmed the use of adult standards in determining whether a juvenile is under custodial interrogation and whether the juvenile has "knowingly and intelligently" waived her Miranda rights. Due to differences in juvenile cognition, young people's limited comprehension of the words and substance of the Miranda rights, and their vulnerability to police interrogation techniques, I argue in this note that states should go beyond the baseline established by the Supreme Court, as some have already, to offer juvenile suspects increased protection during a custodial interrogation. This note examines the …

Capillary Scale Reagent Introduction And Optical Detectors For Capillary Scale Analysis, Santosh K. Mishra Jan 2011

Capillary Scale Reagent Introduction And Optical Detectors For Capillary Scale Analysis, Santosh K. Mishra

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Atmospheric aerosols are of great interest as they have the potential to perturb the earth's radiative energy balance, influence the climate, reduce visibility, and adversely affect human health. The composition of atmospheric particulate matter, especially the concentrations of metals and their ratios, provide insights into sources of the aerosol. Capillary scale ion chromatography systems have several advantages over conventional chromatographic analysis systems like low reagent consumption, small sample requirement, higher efficiencies and better absolute mass detection limits. Hence, to achieve source identification and source apportionment, optical detector based capillary ion chromatography systems are proposed to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis …
