School of Health Professions

Study objectives: To investigate the long-term physical and chemical stability of 0.3 mg/mL and 0.7 mg/mL infusions of docetaxel (Teva) in polyolefin bags containing either 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% glucose, stored under refrigerated (2°C–8°C) and room temperature (25°C) conditions protected from the light. Methods: The infusions were prepared aseptically and stored at the two temperatures for 56 days. At various time points, chemical stability was determined using a validated stability-indicating, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay. Physical stability was ascertained in terms of visual appearance, pH, weight change of infusions, and sub-visible particles counts. Results: Irrespective of drug concentration, …

Quality Of Work Life: A Review Of Literature, Maynard R. Bagtasos Jan 2011

Quality Of Work Life: A Review Of Literature, Maynard R. Bagtasos

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The Quality of Work Life (QWL) is a multi-faceted concept, having multi-dimensional constructs brought about by the variation of interest of the researchers and/or its users. The issue of QWL has become critical due to the increasing demands of today’s business environment and of the family structure. This gave rise to an increased interest in QWL not only in business but also for many professions and fields. Determining QWL always involves the interplay between and among the worker, job content, and job context. Furthermore, the determination of the extent of QWL in an organization is a perceptual undertaking. As such, …

The Geographic Profiling Of Poverty And Accessibility: The Case Of Two Provinces In The Philippines, Alexis M. Fillone, Nicanor Roxas Jr., Cristela G. Dakila Jan 2011

The Geographic Profiling Of Poverty And Accessibility: The Case Of Two Provinces In The Philippines, Alexis M. Fillone, Nicanor Roxas Jr., Cristela G. Dakila

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study attempts to relate the poverty problem in the Philippines using spatial accessibility measures. Spatial accessibility is the ease with which one could avail of the social services and economic opportunities laid in geographic space to the individual. Using the provinces of Eastern Samar and Siquijor Island as case studies, a Social Composite Index (SCI) value for the household was derived from the 13+1 CBMS core indicators of poverty, which represents the unmet needs of the household and which was then aggregated at the barangay level. The spatial accessibility values were estimated by measuring how each barangay, specifically households, …

Phytoestrogens Directly Inhibit Tnf-Α-Induced Bone Resorption In Raw264.7 Cells By Suppressing C-Fos-Induced Nfatc1 Expression., S Karieb, Sw Fox Jan 2011

Phytoestrogens Directly Inhibit Tnf-Α-Induced Bone Resorption In Raw264.7 Cells By Suppressing C-Fos-Induced Nfatc1 Expression., S Karieb, Sw Fox

School of Biomedical Sciences

TNF-α-induced osteoclastogenesis is central to post-menopausal and inflammatory bone loss, however, the effect of phytoestrogens on TNF-α-induced bone resorption has not been studied. The phytoestrogens genistein, daidzein, and coumestrol directly suppressed TNF-α-induced osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. TRAP positive osteoclast formation and resorption area were significantly reduced by genistein (10(-7)  M), daidzein (10(-5)  M), and coumestrol (10(-7)  M), which was prevented by the estrogen antagonist ICI 182,780. TRAP expression in mature TNF-α-induced osteoclasts was also significantly reduced by these phytoestrogen concentrations. In addition, in the presence of ICI 182,780 genistein and coumestrol (10(-5) -10(-6)  M) augmented TNF-α-induced osteoclast formation and resorption. …

The Psychology Of Stroke In Young Adults: The Roles Of Service Provision And Return To Work, Reg Morris Jan 2011

The Psychology Of Stroke In Young Adults: The Roles Of Service Provision And Return To Work, Reg Morris

School of Psychology

Literature about the psychological consequences of stroke in those under 65 is reviewed focussing on services and work. Despite similarities, young and old survivors have different experiences and needs. These are attributable to the effects of stroke on age-normative roles and activities, self-image, and the young person's stage in the life-cycle, especially family and work. “Hidden” cognitive impairments, a disrupted sense of self, and the incongruity of suffering an “older person's” disease are salient. Young survivors benefit from services, but experience lack of congruence between their needs and service philosophy, methods, and aims, and consequently have unmet needs. Employment is …

The Acoustic Effects Of Vowel Equalization Training In Singers, Christopher Dromey, Emily Heaton, J. Arden Hopkin Jan 2011

The Acoustic Effects Of Vowel Equalization Training In Singers, Christopher Dromey, Emily Heaton, J. Arden Hopkin

Faculty Publications

Vowel equalization is a technique that can be used by singers to achieve a more balanced vocal resonance, or chiaroscuro, by balancing corresponding front and back vowels, which share approximate tongue heights, and also high and low vowels by means of a more neutral or centralized lingual posture. The goal of this single group study was to quantify acoustic changes in vowels following a brief training session in vowel equalization. Fifteen young adults with amateur singing experience sang a passage and sustained isolated vowels both before and after a 15 minute training session in vowel equalization. The first two …

Traditional Treatment And Altered Auditory Feedback Lead To Intelligibility Benefits In A Subset Of Speakers With Parkinson Disease, Christopher Dromey Jan 2011

Traditional Treatment And Altered Auditory Feedback Lead To Intelligibility Benefits In A Subset Of Speakers With Parkinson Disease, Christopher Dromey

Faculty Publications

Because relatively little evidence has been published that compares the long-term effects of different dysarthria treatments, the authors undertook a study to document changes in speech rate and intelligibility in response to two types of intervention. Rate control is taught in many speech-language pathology training programs as a means to improve speech intelligibility, and thus it was a logical choice for the present study. Likewise, AAF has been shown to impact both normal and disordered speech, in most cases resulting in reduced rate. In theory, either approach should have a positive effect on speech, since individuals with neuromotor control deficits …

Drilling For Micro-Foundations Of Human Capital Based Competitive Advantages, Russell Coff, David Kryscynski Jan 2011

Drilling For Micro-Foundations Of Human Capital Based Competitive Advantages, Russell Coff, David Kryscynski

Faculty Publications

From the origins of the Resource Based View, scholars have emphasized the importance of human capital as a source of sustained competitive advantage and recently there has been great interest in gaining a better understanding of the micro-foundations of strategic capabilities. Along these lines, there is little doubt that heterogeneous human capital is often a critical underlying mechanism for capabilities. Here, we explore how individual level phenomena underpin isolating mechanisms that sustain human capital-based advantages but also create management dilemmas that must be resolved in order to create value. The solutions to these challenges cannot be found purely in generic …
