The Elder Index illustrates how living costs vary geographically (specifically, by county, metropolitan area, and state), and based on the characteristics of households. Costs are calculated based on household size (one person age 65 or older, two persons age 65 or older), housing tenure (owner with no mortgage, renter, owner with a mortgage), and health status (excellent, good, poor). The expenses included in the Elder Index cover basic needs of older households, including shelter, medical care, food, and transportation; the costs reflect average market costs and do not take into account any needs-based subsidies. The Elder Index helps answer important …

The Elder IndexTM measures of the cost of living independently for older adults aged 65 or older. The Elder Index allows us to identify older people with incomes “in the gap” between the Federal Poverty Guideline (FPL) and what it takes to live with security. Older adults living “in the gap” have incomes too high to qualify for many means-tested public benefits programs, yet too low to achieve intermediate- or long-term economic stability. This fact sheet presents 2025 Elder Index for older adults living in Boston, Massachusetts.

New estimates from the 2025 Elder IndexTM demonstrate that the cost of living in Massachusetts has increased substantially in recent years for older adults, especially for renters. The Elder Index measures the necessary costs faced by households made up of one or two older adults, calculated county by county for the entire United States. Estimated costs are higher in Massachusetts than in any other state in the nation. Within the Commonwealth, the Elder Index is lowest in Western Massachusetts, and highest in Metro Boston, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, with differences in the Elder Index across locations accounted for largely …

The objective of this study was to test whether adding a text message campaign about the importance of eating eggs and other nutrition-related behaviours to an on-going package of large-scale, diverse social and behaviour change interventions would improve four types of nutrition-related knowledge and behaviour outcomes: child diets (egg consumption as the primary outcome), maternal diets, maternal nutrition knowledge, and maternal participation in additional interventions. The cluster-randomized controlled trial involved a repeat cross-sectional design, recruiting families with children 12–23 months of age at baseline and endline in one plains district of Nepal. Throughout the 1000-day period, 51 text messages were …

The HDL-specific phospholipid efflux (HDL-SPE) assay is a novel cell-free measure of HDL function that is inversely associated with coronary artery disease. However, the effect of exercise training on HDL-SPE is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of exercise training on HDL-SPE in a large, diverse cohort free of overt disease. Clinical and functional measures of HDL were taken before and after 20 weeks of endurance exercise training in 508 participants from the HERITAGE Family Study. Associations of HDL-SPE with HDL-related traits were examined using Pearson's correlations at baseline and following exercise training (significance: P …

Model For Analyzing Floorplate Morphology That Optimizes Daylighting And Cost, Andrew G. Welch, Ermal Shpuza Phd
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
One key method to improve the energy efficiency of a building is to enhance daylight levels, which reduces the need for artificial lighting. Elevated daylight levels are also associated with increased productivity and well-being of building occupants. Daylight levels are inversely proportional to the building compactness, where shallow floorplates and elongated buildings are associated with higher daylight levels. However, creating buildings that have more natural light comes with a greater construction cost due to larger envelope areas as well as greater operating costs due to the energy loss through the exterior envelope area. This research identifies the basic design strategies …

Bladder preservation remains a highly desirable therapeutic goal in urothelial carcinoma, particularly when durable survival can be achieved. Radical cystectomy is the standard treatment for muscle-invasive disease; however, it results in irreversible bladder loss and significant morbidity. Among patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma, recurrence rates after standard therapy remain high. Consolidation therapy with enfortumab vedotin and pembrolizumab following cisplatin-based induction chemotherapy has demonstrated promising efficacy, with substantial complete response rates and improved bladder preservation. This single-center retrospective analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of enfortumab vedotin plus pembrolizumab as consolidation therapy in 11 patients with metastatic urothelial …

Did A.T. Still, Do, Have An Md Degree?, David B. Fuller
PCOM Scholarly Works
A.T. Still, DO (1828–1917), founder of osteopathic medicine, was a licensed physician practicing in late 19th- and early 20th-century America. Although many assume he held an MD degree, the reality is more complex. Examining whether Dr. Still earned an MD degree provides important insight into the origins of osteopathic medicine and the profession that followed.

PURPOSE: Medical physicists are essential healthcare professionals who bridge the gap between technology and patient care, particularly in radiation oncology and medical imaging. With the profession expanding its clinical and global roles, the need for competencies beyond technical expertise-such as communication, leadership, and cultural awareness-is increasingly evident. These competencies, commonly referred to as soft skills, are critical for patient-centered care but remain insufficiently integrated into formal education and training pathways. The aim of the present work was to identify soft skills relevant to medical physics practice and investigate where in a career they are acquired and used.

PURPOSE: Treatment of recurrent prostate cancer following prior therapy is challenging due to the risk of toxicities to previously irradiated normal tissues, particularly the rectum. Proton therapy offers a conformal approach that may reduce this risk. Perirectal spacers have been shown to further minimize rectal dose in primary treatment, but the ability to be placed and their value in the retreatment setting have not been thoroughly evaluated to date. The purpose of this study was to evaluate feasibility of rectal spacer placement after prior pelvic radiation or other local treatments for prostate cancer.

A Right Without A Remedy: The Court’S Failure To Quantify The Agua Caliente’S Federal Reserved Water Rights, Lauren Block
Washington Law Review
The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has inhabited the Coachella Valley region since time immemorial. Through a series of 1870s executive orders, the United States government reserved land for the Tribe to establish a permanent home within the bounds of their ancestral homeland. Underlying this permanent home is the Coachella Valley aquifer, a groundwater source that has been in a continuous state of overdraft for decades. Against the backdrop of climate change, water scarcity, and other concerns, the Tribe sued Coachella Valley’s water management agencies in 2013, alleging the Tribe owned a portion of the water in the aquifer …

Triggering Receptor Expressed on Myeloid Cells 2 (TREM2) is one of the strongest genetic risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several TREM2 ligands are known, including charged lipids and AD-associated proteins like apolipoprotein E and amyloid-β, but the full range of endogenous ligands for TREM2 remains unknown. Here we combined virtual screening of the Human Metabolome Database with molecular dynamics simulations, binding free energy estimation, and biolayer interferometry to identify novel TREM2 ligands and map their binding sites. Cholecalciferol, the unmodified parent form of vitamin D3, emerged as a top candidate. Structural modeling indicated that cholecalciferol binds TREM2 at …

Sanitary environments that undergo frequent cleaning and disinfection may harbor microbial communities with potential health risks. While biofilms in healthcare settings are well studied, comparatively less is known about sink-drain microbiomes in public and educational buildings, where hundreds of people may interact with shared sink fixtures. This study characterized the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of sink-drain biofilm microbiomes in academic buildings. We sampled 16 sinks from two buildings (four floors each, with sinks closest and furthest to the bathroom entrance), which are cleaned daily with quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) disinfectants, during periods of low and high student traffic (during and …

Resurrecting Immigration Releases, Lindsay Nash

The nation’s “mandatory” immigration-detention laws sustain its largest civil-imprisonment system—and just radically expanded in scope and breadth. These laws consign broad swaths of suspected noncitizens to no-bail pretrial detention, denying tens of thousands of people facing civil regulatory charges any chance to prove they need not be detained. These laws turn split-second arrest decisions into jail sentences. They force people to give up meritorious claims. And they confound the historic presumptions—liberty, innocence, prosecutorial discretion, and bail—that undergird other pretrial-detention regimes.
Although mandatory immigration detention conflicts with fundamental constraints on analogous detention regimes, the Supreme Court has treated it as exceptional …

INTRODUCTION: Acetabular fractures in elderly patients are often the result of low-energy trauma and are complicated by osteopenia, comorbidities, and limited physiologic reserve. Minimally invasive approaches, such as percutaneous fixation have emerged as viable alternatives to open reduction in selected fracture patterns.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 76-year-old male with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and osteopenia who sustained a comminuted right anterior column and posterior hemitransverse acetabular fracture following a ground-level fall. His hospital course was complicated by rhabdomyolysis and elevated troponin levels, necessitating cardiac evaluation, which demonstrated normal left ventricular function and …

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
In this case report, we describe a patient who presented to their primary care provider with abdominal pain after returning from travel to the Caribbean island of St. Croix. The patient reported two weeks of epigastric abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and night sweats. Following an initial evaluation that revealed eosinophilia with unclear etiology, they were referred to an infectious disease clinic. Through a targeted infectious evaluation and workup, the patient was diagnosed with acute schistosomiasis syndrome and was treated with praziquantel. Treatment resulted in the complete resolution of her symptoms, and follow-up laboratory evaluation showed complete resolution of her eosinophilia. …

Volume-regulated anion channels (VRACs) are central to cell volume homeostasis. They mediate swelling-induced efflux of chloride and organic osmolytes to drive regulatory volume decrease. In the brain, VRACs have been proposed to play a key role in astrocytic volume regulation. Genetic defects in astrocytic VRAC modulating proteins (MLC1, GlialCAM, Aquaporin-4, GPRC5B) cause the leukodystrophy Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC), characterized by chronic white matter edema and myelin vacuolization. Disrupted VRAC activity in MLC-patient-derived lymphoblasts and primary astrocytes from MLC mice further supports a pathogenic link between defective VRAC activity and MLC. Here, we studied the physiological and pathological consequences …

Strengthening School Social Work: Improving Student Outcomes Through Stronger Support Systems, Kaitlyn Dailey, Faridah Kassim, Rhaleecia Rahming, Angela Soto
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
School social workers are essential to student well-being and academic success, yet current caseloads and unclear role expectations prevent them from providing effective, evidence-based support. School social workers improve graduation rates, reduce behavioral challenges, and strengthen school engagement, but only when staffing levels and role clarity allow them to work within their professional scope. Without policy action, Minnesota schools will continue to rely on crisis-driven models that leave students without early intervention and place social workers at high risk for burnout. Rural districts will face even greater inequities, as many students already depend on schools as their only access point …

No Community Left Behind: Investing In Mental Health Service Access In Rural Minnesota, Keaton Anderson, Madison Demars, Trisha Graves-Petron, Cheyenne Munoz
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Much of Minnesota has a shortage of mental health providers due to specific problems around graduating workers, recruiting them and keeping them once they are hired. Lower salaries, older population bases, and inconsistent healthcare coverage all contribute to the shortage of providers in rural areas. Long distances between mental health facilities and stigma in mental health care exacerbate the shortage. More than 1.2 million Minnesotans live in rural communities and of those at least 25% do not have access to reliable broadband internet. Rural areas face significant behavioral health workforce shortages, as seen in Figure 1. Minnesota needs to invest …

Accountability For Unlawful Actions By Ice In Minnesota, Luisalfredo Garcia, Ore-Ofe Oluwajobi, Gabriela Passmore, Mariah Wabasha
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Immigration enforcement actions have escalated since December 2025 under “Operation Metro Surge”, with deployment of 4,000 ICE agents to the Twin Cities and rural Minnesota. ICE occupation within Minnesota has included an unprecedented number of people, both documented and undocumented, who have been detained by ICE agents and unlawful actions by ICE. With federal agents disregarding constitutional laws and human rights, there has not been legal accountability or consequences for the traumatic incidents inflicted on Minnesota by Department of Homeland Security. Policy oversight must be implemented to ensure proper accountability for illegal or unjust actions.

Free Speech Trapped In Amber: The Rise Of The 'History And Tradition' Test, From Unregulated Guns To Highly Regulated Speech, Matthew D. Bunker, Emily Erickson
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
