Determining Exurbia: Is It Really Its Own Entity Or Merely An Extension Of Americas Growing Suburbia, Thomas A. Green Jan 2011

Determining Exurbia: Is It Really Its Own Entity Or Merely An Extension Of Americas Growing Suburbia, Thomas A. Green

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose for studying exurbanization is to evaluate the spatial spread of metropolitan areas into their immediate hinterlands through remote sensing satellite imagery. This includes addressing scholar's inability to define exurbia, along with plausible reasons people move into exurbia. In addition, determination will include consideration on the possibility that exurbia has become an extension of America's growing and increasingly independent suburbia or; recognize that exurbia exists, but within various geographic locations. In return to the former, an analytical approach was taken to investigate scholar's inability to provide a definition to this phenomena; as well as inconsistent results on the push …

A Multiple Additive Regression Tree Analysis Of Three Exposure Measures During Hurricane Katrina, Andrew Curtis, Bin Li, Brian D. Marx, Jacqueline W. Mills, John Pine

Faculty Publications

This paper analyses structural and personal exposure to Hurricane Katrina. Structural exposure is measured by flood height and building damage; personal exposure is measured by the locations of 911 calls made during the response. Using these variables, this paper characterises the geography of exposure and also demonstrates the utility of a robust analytical approach in understanding health-related challenges to disadvantaged populations during recovery. Analysis is conducted using a contemporary statistical approach, a multiple additive regression tree (MART), which displays considerable improvement over traditional regression analysis. By using MART, the percentage of improvement in R-squares over standard multiple linear regression ranges …

Diversification Of An Endemic Southeast Asian Genus: Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Spiderhunters (Nectariniidae: Arachnothera), Robert G. Moyle, Sabrina S. Taylor, Carl H. Oliveros, Haw Chuan Lim, Cheryl L. Haines, Mustafa A. Rahman, Frederick H. Sheldon

Faculty Publications

The phylogeny of spiderhunters (Nectariniidae: Arachnothera) was reconstructed by comparing mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences of all currently recognized species and with broad geographic sampling of two particularly variable species complexes, the Little Spiderhunter (Arachnothera longirostra) and the streaky spiderhunters (A. modesta and A. affinis). It appears to be a relatively old group, whose diversification was not caused by recent sea-level changes. However, the modern, highly sympatric distribution of the large species in the Sunda lowlands was probably a result of dispersal via recent land bridges. Within the highly variable A. longirostra group, there are substantially diverged taxa in the …

The Energy-Water Nexus In Texas, Amy Hardberger, Ashlynn Stillwell, Carey King, Michael Webber, Ian Duncan

Faculty Articles

As we confront the challenges posed by climate change, decisions on supplying energy and water to the world’s growing population should no longer be made in isolation. The challenges facing Texas and the rest of the globe require that we recognize the deep inter‐connections and trade‐offs involved in deciding how to meet power and water needs in an increasingly resource‐constrained world.

This report is the first in a series designed to explore aspects of the energy‐water nexus in Texas. It examines the water requirements for various types of electricity generating facilities, both for typical systems nationwide and here in Texas. …

On Race, Gender, And Radical Tort Reform: A Review Of Martha Chamallas & Jennifer B. Wriggins, The Measure Of Injury: Race, Gender, And Tort Law, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

The Measure of Injury is an intellectual tour de force of gender and race-based jurisprudence applied to critical issues in the law of torts. In this volume, Martha Chamallas and Jennifer B. Wriggins shed light on numerous issues related to law governing accidents and intentional injuries, while offering insights into the American tort system and the challenges it faces.

Chamallas and Wriggins draw upon the feminist theory, critical race theory, and general critical theory in analyzing tort doctrines and evaluating potential reforms. The authors explore how racial perceptions can distort even seemingly neutral inquiries, such as those related to factual …

Children's Constitutional Rights, Anne Dailey Jan 2011

Children's Constitutional Rights, Anne Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

This Article presents a developmental theory of children’s constitutional rights that focuses on the fundamental role of children’s rights in the socialization process leading to adult autonomy. The long history of denying children the full range of constitutional rights has its roots in a choice theory of rights that understands rights as deriving from the decision-making autonomy of the individual. From the perspective of choice theory, children do not enjoy most constitutional rights because they lack the capacity for autonomous choice. Choice theory not only justifies the long history of denying children rights, but it also serves to explain the …

Some Think Of The Future: Internet, Electronic, And Telephonic Labor Representation Elections, Sara Slinn, William A. Herbert Jan 2011

Some Think Of The Future: Internet, Electronic, And Telephonic Labor Representation Elections, Sara Slinn, William A. Herbert

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Amid the scholarly dialogue regarding amending labor certification procedures, there have been calls for the adoption of Internet, electronic, and/or telephonic representation voting (“IETV”) procedures in representation elections. To date, most labor relations agencies in the United States and Canada have not implemented IETV. Three notable exceptions are the National Mediation Board (“NMB”) and the Federal Labor Relations Authority (“FLRA”) in the United States, and the Canada Industrial Relations Board (“CIRB”). This Article explores the strengths and weaknesses of IETV and the potential for wider adoption of this technology in the representation election context. The Article examines NMB’s rationale in …

Grappling With Online Work: Lessons From Cyberlaw, Alek Felstiner

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Employment law is currently unequipped to decide rights and obligations in many online work scenarios. We simply do not know how the courts will address the dramatic divergence between existing law and the realities of the modern online workforce. But, it is worth remembering that courts have already grappled extensively with the general question of how to apply existing rules to the Internet. Cases dealing with online property, contract, tort, and crime can help us project how courts might approach the novel and perplexing questions sure to arise in online work disputes.

This Article identifies three basic approaches: (1) the …

  • Men dominate the teaching of Labor Law, but women have mostly narrowed the gap in Employment Law.
  • The other courses taught by Labor and Employment Law faculty members are highly sex-segregated. For example, Employment Law faculty members who also teach Family Law or Property are overwhelmingly likely to be women, and Employment Law faculty members who also teach Constitutional Law, Civil …

Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson Jan 2011

Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …
