Landscapes Of City And Self: Place And Identity In Urban Young Adult Literature, Ebony Elizabeth Thomas Jan 2011

Landscapes Of City And Self: Place And Identity In Urban Young Adult Literature, Ebony Elizabeth Thomas

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Urban landscapes feature iconic symbols from the past and contemporary times. These noticings and remembrances from literature and life contribute to the formation of readers’ identities, as well as their sense of being anchored in worlds both real and fictional.  As taken for granted as the geographic, cultural, and economic distinctions of cities are, there are broader implications for readers, teachers, and critics of adolescent literature. In this article, the author proposes that the virtual nature of many of today’s communication modes has inspired a return to that which is tangible, local, and immediate.  The urban geographies imagined and described …

Conflict, Health Care And Professional Perseverance: A Qualitative Study In The West Bank, Cindy A. Sousa, Amy Hagopian Jan 2011

Conflict, Health Care And Professional Perseverance: A Qualitative Study In The West Bank, Cindy A. Sousa, Amy Hagopian

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

The past three decades have been a time of considerable global conflict, affecting over 50 countries and causing substantial impacts on civilian health. While many effects are direct results of violence, conflict also impinges on health through indirect means. The restricted mobility of health care staff and patients, targeting of health care workers, and stressful working conditions disrupt the ability of health care workers in conflict zones to function effectively. This paper explores the challenges experienced by health care workers in West Bank, Palestine, as well as their strategies of persistence. Research activities included participant observation and interviews with health …

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Objective: Latin American-trained international medical graduates (IMGs) in psychiatry residency face multiple challenges that go beyond their medical training. These challenges call for innovative problem-solving. Although the professional development of IMGs has been discussed in the professional literature, little is written about their experiences. In this report, a group of IMGs reflect on their experiences and describe how they solved challenges. Method: Using cogenerative ethnography, four IMGs trained in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico provided insights on their

challenges and solutions while adapting to psychiatric residency training. Individual interviews, focused discussion, and written reports were analyzed using data reduction, …

Teaching Intersections, Not Assessments: Celebrating The Surprise Of Gift Giving And Gift Getting In The Cultural Commons, Anne Dalke, Alice Lesnick Jan 2011

Teaching Intersections, Not Assessments: Celebrating The Surprise Of Gift Giving And Gift Getting In The Cultural Commons, Anne Dalke, Alice Lesnick

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

Unlike current assessment protocols, which emphasize prediction and control—often at the expense of engagement with the unknown, emergent, and new—we explore here our experiences as professors opening to surprise, in pedagogical interactions that have unpredictable outcomes. We imagine and advocate for institutional structures that, rather than predetermining goals and measuring how well we have achieved them, necessitate surprise and strengthen us to respond creatively and liberally to it. Without room for surprise, we argue, education is denied, and distorted by the loss of, one of its central energies: the circulation of the gifts of chance and serendipity.

International Law In Crisis: Piracy Off The Coast Of Somalia, Milena Sterio Jan 2011

International Law In Crisis: Piracy Off The Coast Of Somalia, Milena Sterio

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The rise of piracy off the coast of Somalia over the last five years has been spectacular, amounting to a true crisis in international law. During the first six months of 2011, Somali pirates attacked 163 ships and took 361 sailors hostage. As of June 30, 2011, Somali pirates were holding 20 ships and 420 crew members, demanding millions of dollars in ransom for their release. Moreover, pirates have been attacking larger ships, such as oil tankers, and using more potent weapons, such as rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. Pirates have also been attacking during monsoon season, an otherwise risky …

Using An Adaptive Scenarios Approach To Establish Strategies For Tomorrow’S Workplace, Ruth Saurin, John Radcliffe

Articles

This paper aims to demonstrate that it is important to have a methodological process that is reflexive and flexible to achieve fluid interactions that add rigour and energy to the overall process of a built environment project. Therefore, it outlines three phases of the Prospective Through Scenarios futures process used in a study called the “Workplace of the Future”. It also discusses how and why the methodology evolved during the course of the project with participant feedback as the main source of information for the analysis. Furthermore, novel qualitative futures techniques have been applied to a discipline that is usually …

Exploring The Determinants Of High-Cost Mortgages To Homeowners In Low- And Moderate-Income Neighborhoods, Michael S. Barr, Jane K. Dokko, Benjamin J. Keys Jan 2011

Exploring The Determinants Of High-Cost Mortgages To Homeowners In Low- And Moderate-Income Neighborhoods, Michael S. Barr, Jane K. Dokko, Benjamin J. Keys

Book Chapters

In spite of the recent impetus to reform home mortgage markets, particularly as they affect low- and moderate-income (LMI) households, little systematic evidence is available about how potential abuses in mortgage lending manifest in the mortgages held by those households. While racial discrimination in mortgage markets has a long history in the United States, the role of mortgage brokers in lending has only recently increased and become controversial. In this chapter, we uncover two mechanisms through which differential mortgage pricing occurs among LMI homeowners: black borrowers and borrowers who use mortgage brokers pay more for mortgage loans than other borrowers, …

Attraction And Motivation Of Millennial Generation Volunteers By Nonprofit Organizations, Yuliya Shkuro Jan 2011

Attraction And Motivation Of Millennial Generation Volunteers By Nonprofit Organizations, Yuliya Shkuro

Attracting and motivating volunteers, especially younger generation volunteers, is a critical but not easy task for leaders in nonprofit sector. This paper examines what factors have been found to motivate Generation Y to volunteer in nonprofit organizations. Furthermore, the paper focuses on examining literature pertaining to help nonprofit organizations gain information about attraction and retention of younger volunteers. The trends learned from literature review have shown that Millennial volunteers are most likely to volunteer when they want to self-improve (professionally, academically), learn new skills, help disadvantaged, develop identity through association with nonprofit organization, socialize, meet new friends, and establish social …

Portfolio Decision Quality, Jeffrey Keisler Jan 2011

Portfolio Decision Quality, Jeffrey Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

The decision quality framework has been useful for integrating decision analytic techniques into decision processes in a way that adds value. This framework extends to the specific context of portfolio decisions, where decision quality is determined at both the project level and the portfolio level, as well as in the interaction between these two levels. A common heuristic says that the perfect amount of decision quality is the level at which the additional cost of improving an aspect of the decision is equal to the additional value of that improvement. A review of several models that simulate portfolio decision-making approaches …

Narratives Of Identity, Nation, And Outsiders Within Outsiders: Not Yet A Post-Anything World, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol Jan 2011

Narratives Of Identity, Nation, And Outsiders Within Outsiders: Not Yet A Post-Anything World, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

The essays in this cluster all deploy narratives of identity and nation. They also bring to life the status of outsiders as racialized "others." This reality of racialization contradicts the popular narrative that we live in a post-racial society. The current claim of post-racialism is grounded in the simple fact that in the United States a huge margin of the popular vote elected a Black man as president. That man is Barack Hussein Obama, someone who has to engage, as those who are the subject of the essays, with concerns about nation, identity, and being a racialized "other."

Uncertainty In Modelling Of Faecal Coliform Overland Transport Associated With Manure Application In Maryland, A. K. Guber, Y. A. Pachepsky, A. M. Yakirevich, D. R. Shelton, A. M. Sadeghi, D. C. Goodrich, C. L. Unkrich

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Concerns for microbial safety of surface water facilitate development of predictive models that estimate concentrations and total numbers of pathogen and indicator organisms leaving manure-fertilized fields in overland flow during runoff events. Spatial variability of bacterial concentrations in applied manure introduces high uncertainty in the model predictions. The objective of this work was to evaluate the uncertainty in model predictions of the manure-borne bacteria overland transport caused by limited information on the spatial distribution of bacteria in surface-applied manure. Experiments were carried out at the ARS Beltsville experimental watershed site (OPE3) in Maryland. Dairy bovine manure was applied at a …

Towards Estimation Of Canopy Foliar Biomass With Spectral Reflectance Measurements, Lingli Wang, E. Raymond Hunt Jr., John J. Qu, Xianjun Hao, Craig S.T. Daughtry Jan 2011

Towards Estimation Of Canopy Foliar Biomass With Spectral Reflectance Measurements, Lingli Wang, E. Raymond Hunt Jr., John J. Qu, Xianjun Hao, Craig S.T. Daughtry

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Canopy foliar biomass, defined as the product of leaf dry matter content and leaf area index, is an important measurement for global biogeochemical cycles. This study explores the potential for retrieving foliar biomass in green canopies using a spectral index, the Normalized Dry Matter Index (NDMI). This narrow-band index is based on absorption at the C–H bond stretch overtone and is correlated with leaf dry matter content in fresh green leaves. PROSPECT and SAIL model simulations suggest that the NDMI at the canopy scale is able to minimize the effects of leaf thickness and leaf water content and to maximize …

A Lidar‐Derived Evaluation Of Watershed‐Scale Large Woody Debris Sources And Recruitment Mechanisms: Coastal Maine, Usa, A. Kasprak, F. J. Magilligan, K. H. Nislow, N. P. Snyder Jan 2011

A Lidar‐Derived Evaluation Of Watershed‐Scale Large Woody Debris Sources And Recruitment Mechanisms: Coastal Maine, Usa, A. Kasprak, F. J. Magilligan, K. H. Nislow, N. P. Snyder

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In‐channel large woody debris (LWD) promotes quality aquatic habitat through sediment sorting, pool scouring and in‐stream nutrient retention and transport. LWD recruitment occurs by numerous ecological and geomorphic mechanisms including channel migration, mass wasting and natural tree fall, yet LWD sourcing on the watershed scale remains poorly constrained. We developed a rapid and spatially extensive method for using light detection and ranging data to do the following: (i) estimate tree height and recruitable tree abundance throughout a watershed; (ii) determine the likelihood for the stream to recruit channel‐spanning trees at reach scales and assess whether mass wasting or channel migration …

Spatial Ramifications Of Crop Selection: Water Quality And Biomass Energy, M. P. Russelle, D. W. Kelley, A. S. Birr, D. C. Tiffany Jan 2011

Spatial Ramifications Of Crop Selection: Water Quality And Biomass Energy, M. P. Russelle, D. W. Kelley, A. S. Birr, D. C. Tiffany

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The use of GIS in concert with simple or complex simulation modeling provides an unparalleled way to generate new data and to help a variety of audiences understand spatial patterns of data. From improved understanding, policy incentives can be crafted to reduce adverse environmental impacts of agricultural production at lower costs than would be necessary otherwise. In this chapter, two case studies demonstrate how GIS and modeling can be used to understand how crop selection and soils interact to effect environmental outcomes across an agricultural landscape. We addressed the needs of two distinctly different audiences: (1) a public drinking water …

Modeling Least-Impact Atv Trails In Berlin, Nh With Established Fine-Grained Evaluation Criteria (Rsa 215-A: 43), Shawn C. Herrick

Master's Theses and Capstones

The evaluation of 7200 acres of land in Berlin, NH was conducted using the New Hampshire State Statues regarding fine-grained evaluation criteria for ATV trails (RSA 215-A: 43) to determine its viability as a multi-use trail park. A geographical information system (GIS) was used to facilitate the location of land, which is suited for trail construction. A comprehensive exploration of data led to the development of a geospatial database in which each criteria was given spatial value. Next, each of the 29 statutes regarding trail placement was analyzed and mapped to determine co-occurrence. Approximately, 1800 acres, or 25% of the …

International Civil Religion: Respecting Religious Diversity While Promoting International Cooperation, Amos Prosser Davis Jan 2011

International Civil Religion: Respecting Religious Diversity While Promoting International Cooperation, Amos Prosser Davis

UC Law SF International Law Review

International civil religion grounds moral claims that permeate and transcend traditional religious paradigms. Given the inevitability of international interactions - interactions that cross geographic, religious, and cultural boundaries - our global society is in need of a universally endorsable framework that undergirds the United Nations international human rights regime. International civil religion provides that framework.

Numerous scholars and moral theorists have incrementally discerned the parameters of civil religion including, inter alia, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Alexis de Tocqueville, Robert Bellah, Martin Marty, and Harold Berman. The tenets of international civil religion infuse the diplomatically drafted United Nations covenants and conventions on human …

The Impact Of Opinion On Foreign Trade, Nikolaus Williams Jan 2011

The Impact Of Opinion On Foreign Trade, Nikolaus Williams

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper examines the impact that opinion has on foreign trade. Specifically, the paper examines how opinion towards the U.S. impacts U.S. exports and how changes in opinion toward the U.S. impact U.S. exports. Using survey data from the Pew Global Attitudes Projects and export data, the paper examines these relationships for 21 countries between 2002 and 2010. Regression analysis of the panel data reveals that positive opinion levels and positive changes in opinion have statistically significant positive impacts on U.S. exports. However, this conclusion is somewhat tempered by the unbalanced nature of the available data which prevents a greater …

The Power Of Definition: Brazil's Contribution To Universal Concepts Of Indigeneity, Jan Hoffman French Jan 2011

The Power Of Definition: Brazil's Contribution To Universal Concepts Of Indigeneity, Jan Hoffman French

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article builds on discussions about the potential benefits and difficulties with developing a universal definition of indigenous peoples. It explores the spaces made available for theorizing indigeneity by the lack of a definition in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, adopted in 2007. Specifically, this article addresses the challenge presented by the diversity of groups claiming indigenous status in Brazil. To what extent do distinct cosmologies and languages that mark Amazonian Indians as unquestionably indigenous affect newly recognized tribes in the rest of Brazil who share none of the indicia of authenticity? This article theorizes …
