The World's Largest Saddle Dam At Risk: Multisensor Geohazard Analysis And Downstream Impacts, Hesham El-Askary, Hesham Morgan, Surendra Maharjan, Ali Elgendy, Wenzhao Li, Rejoice Thomas, Austin Madson, Cyril Rakovski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Saddle Dam, which holds approximately 89% of the main reservoir's live storage, is one of the largest and most critical auxiliary dams globally; its construction on Ethiopia's Blue Nile has consequently raised significant regional and international concerns regarding potential environmental impacts and geohazard risks. This study presents a comprehensive risk assessment of the GERD Saddle Dam by integrating high-resolution satellite data (GRACE, Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, WorldView-3), hydrological modeling (SWAT), Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI), geospatial analysis, and advanced statistical techniques. The results highlight critical structural vulnerabilities, including groundwater infiltration estimated at approximately 41 ± 6.2 billion …

Updated Kalamazoo County Housing Plan 2025, Emily Petz, Val Klomparens, Gerrit Anderson, Lee Adams Feb 2026

Updated Kalamazoo County Housing Plan 2025, Emily Petz, Val Klomparens, Gerrit Anderson, Lee Adams

Reports

A healthy housing continuum provides homes for those in a range of incomes or in different life situations. Kalamazoo County has a shortage of housing units at multiple price points. Low rates of construction, high construction costs, increased demand from a growing population, and housing costs that are increasing faster than wages have contributed to the shortage and affordability issues. This update completed in Spring of 2025 includes new housing assessment and demand numbers to incorporate the impact of the Ford BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall. The demand shows a total of 8,000 units are needed by 2030. If all …

During the fall of 2023, Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) researchers conducted a statewide study to establish a baseline for public perceptions related to the awareness, understanding, and attitudes about challenges that Utah women and girls face. In early 2024, we published 20 short research summaries1 that shared the results of this comprehensive study (see Nos. 9–28). Next, in the fall of 2024, we administered this survey, with slight changes, around the state of Utah for the second time. Six comprehensive research white papers were then published on the results (see Nos. 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, and …

Intense Solar Radiation Constrains Plant Species Richness In Global Grasslands, Marie Spohn, Carlos Alberto Arnillas, Jonathan D. Bakker, Elizabeth T. Borer, Kari Anne Bråthen, Marc W. Cadotte, Erika I. Hersch-Green, Et Al. Feb 2026

Intense Solar Radiation Constrains Plant Species Richness In Global Grasslands, Marie Spohn, Carlos Alberto Arnillas, Jonathan D. Bakker, Elizabeth T. Borer, Kari Anne Bråthen, Marc W. Cadotte, Erika I. Hersch-Green, Et Al.

Michigan Tech Publications

The search for predictors of plant diversity has challenged scientists for decades. Here we identify intense photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) as a major factor constraining plant species richness in global grasslands. We show that the strength of the negative relationship between species richness and PAR increases with increasing elevation and that species richness is more strongly correlated with intense PAR than with UV-B radiation, climate variables, and atmospheric nitrogen deposition. In addition to species richness, plant biomass was also negatively correlated with PAR at higher elevations, indicating that intense PAR also constrains plant biomass in montane grasslands. Furthermore, we show …

Colorectal Cancer Screening In Saudi Arabia: Current Challenges And Future Directions, Abdulrahman A. Aljabri, Abdulrahman G. Alharbi

Saudi Medical Journal

Colorectal cancer has become a major public health concern in Saudi Arabia. It is the most prevalent cancer among men and the third most prevalent among women. Although screening for people aged 45-75 is recommended by national recommendations, screening uptake is still below 10%, and less than 1% of older persons have a colonoscopy. With regional differences that vary from age-standardized rates of 3.2 per 100,000 in Jouf to 21.8 per 100,000 in Riyadh among men, approximately 29% of cases are detected at late stages. Therefore, we assessed the epidemiological, social, and health-related systemic structures preventing effective colorectal cancer screening …

Funding Resilience Or Missing The Mark? An Analysis Of Rrf Allocation And Climate Risk Alignment In Italian Municipalities, Giulio Breglia, Mariagrazia D’Angeli, Giacomo Gazzellone Feb 2026

Funding Resilience Or Missing The Mark? An Analysis Of Rrf Allocation And Climate Risk Alignment In Italian Municipalities, Giulio Breglia, Mariagrazia D’Angeli, Giacomo Gazzellone

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Natural hazards are an increasing concern, placing disaster preparedness and mitigation at the forefront of policy agendas. In this context, Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) has allocated €3 billion for explicit disaster prevention, with a primary focus on hydrogeological risks such as floods and landslides. This study evaluates the geographical and thematic distribution of resilience-related funding, examining whether financial resources have been effectively targeted toward municipalities with the highest exposure to environmental hazards. Using a clustering classification, we identify substantial disparities in the allocation of resilience funds, revealing that municipalities with relatively low risk levels often receive disproportionately high …

Background

The Zanzibar archipelago has been a pre-elimination region for malaria thanks to rigorous control interventions, but recent surges in malaria cases have been observed. The contribution of non-falciparum species to the current malaria situation is unknown.

Method

This study investigates the epidemiology of falciparum and non-falciparum malaria species in Zanzibar. Leveraging plasma extracted from dried blood spots (DBS) collected during reactive case detection (RCD) activities across Unguja island from May 2022 to January 2023, we measured immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses to Plasmodium MSP1-19kD antigens using a multiplex bead-based immunoassay. Additionally, active infections were detected using species-specific real-time PCR.

Legal Implications Of The Mauritius V Maldives Case On The Delimitation Of Archipelagic States, Aishath Ruhsha Nasheed, Mohd Hisham Mohd Kamal Feb 2026

Legal Implications Of The Mauritius V Maldives Case On The Delimitation Of Archipelagic States, Aishath Ruhsha Nasheed, Mohd Hisham Mohd Kamal

Indonesian Journal of International Law

Maritime boundary delimitation is a complex field of international law characterized by uncertainty and unpredictability. Historically, States have relied on case law to develop and elaborate on the ambiguous provisions stipulated under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concerning maritime boundary delimitation. However, case law related to the maritime delimitation of archipelagic States is limited, leading to conflicting interpretations of the basic principles of maritime delimitation in the context of archipelagic States. This paper aims to examine the legal implications of the latest Mauritius v. Maldives case on the maritime boundary delimitation of archipelagic States. …

The Structural Obligations Approach To Human Rights, David Birchall Feb 2026

The Structural Obligations Approach To Human Rights, David Birchall

Indonesian Journal of International Law

This paper starts from the observations that access to socio-economic rights is retrogressing in many wealthy states and that human rights argumentation is failing to address the causes of this retrogression. The paper locates a core reason for this failure in an imbalance between narrow but forceful claim rights and inclusive but imprecise structural approaches. It builds a form of rights practice that merges the strength of each approach. It is predicated on five key principles: structural obligations should identify discrete rights-based problems that engender specific obligations upon feasibly obligated duty-bearers to make practicable changes to conduct to realise rights …

The Amazigh Language And The Marking Of Urban Heritage (The Case Of The Town Of Tiznit, Morocco), Aballa Aboudrar Feb 2026

The Amazigh Language And The Marking Of Urban Heritage (The Case Of The Town Of Tiznit, Morocco), Aballa Aboudrar

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

This study looks at the use of the Amazigh language in commercial signs in the town of Tiznit (Morocco). The aim is to find out the extent to which this language is used to mark space. We found that some shopkeepers prefer to leave their signs anonymous, either because they have not yet thought of marking their territory or because they consider it unnecessary to name them as they are known to their customers. In the inner city, Amazigh is virtually absent from shop signs, while Arabic and French are the two most widely used languages. As for English, it …
