Rapid Development: A Content Analysis Comparison Of Literature And Purposive Sampling Of Afrl Rapid Reaction Projects, Andrew R. Smith Dec 2011

Rapid Development: A Content Analysis Comparison Of Literature And Purposive Sampling Of Afrl Rapid Reaction Projects, Andrew R. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

In the current environment of military operations requesting faster delivery schedules to counter insurgent tactics, the engineering team often searches for how to quickly deliver the 80% solution, typically in 6-12 months. These are labeled rapid development projects. A content analysis of best practices in commercial product development literature, where time to market is often a driving factor, was accomplished showing varying emphasis of systems engineering technical and technical management processes. Technical Planning, Stakeholders Requirements Development, and Architecture Design were identified as important processes. This analysis confirms preconceived notions of plan upfront and early by emphasizing the SE processes of …

Linear-Quadratic Control Of A Mems Micromirror Using Kalman Filtering, Jamie P. Schnapp Dec 2011

Linear-Quadratic Control Of A Mems Micromirror Using Kalman Filtering, Jamie P. Schnapp

Theses and Dissertations

The deflection limitations of electrostatic flexure-beam actuators are well known. Specifically, as the beam is actuated and the gap traversed, the restoring force necessary for equilibrium increases proportionally with the displacement to first order, while the electrostatic actuating force increases with the inverse square of the gap. Equilibrium, and thus stable open-loop voltage control, ceases at one-third the total gap distance, leading to actuator snap-in. A Kalman Filter is designed with an appropriately complex state dynamics model to accurately estimate actuator deflection given voltage input and capacitance measurements, which are then used by a Linear Quadratic controller to generate a …

Power And Practice In Academic Library Materials Selection Paradigms, Elena S. Smith Dec 2011

Power And Practice In Academic Library Materials Selection Paradigms, Elena S. Smith

School of Information Student Research Journal

This article examines the theoretical and practical implications of three methods of materials acquisitions in an academic library. First, it evaluates how traditional collection development, electronic patron driven acquisitions (PDA) and other older forms of PDA affect materials storage, preservation, purchase speed and usage. Then this paper employs Foucault’s theories about power to discuss the ramifications of these acquisitions methods for librarians and three major user groups: faculty, graduate students and undergraduates. The article concludes that each method presents different practical and theoretical advantages and disadvantages.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: The Perplexing Problem Of Indexing Images, Lindsay L. Marlow, Amy Miller Dec 2011

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: The Perplexing Problem Of Indexing Images, Lindsay L. Marlow, Amy Miller

School of Information Student Research Journal

Indexing images has always been problematic due to their richness of content and innate subjectivity. Three traditional approaches to indexing images are described and analyzed. An introduction of the contemporary use of social tagging is presented along with its limitations. Traditional practices can continue to be used as a stand-alone solution, however deficiencies limit retrieval. A collaborative technique is supported by current research and a model created by the authors for its inception is explored. CONTENTdm® is used as an example to illustrate tools that can help facilitate this process. Another potential solution discussed is the expansion of algorithms used …

#Socialtagging: Defining Its Role In The Academic Library, Annalise Ammer, Katherine Bertel

School of Information Student Research Journal

The information environment is rapidly changing, affecting the ways in which information is organized and accessed. User needs and expectations have also changed due to the overwhelming influence of Web 2.0 tools. Conventional information systems no longer support evolving user needs. Based on current research, we explore a method that integrates the structure of controlled languages with the flexibility and adaptability of social tagging. This article discusses the current research and usage of social tagging and Web 2.0 applications within the academic library. Types of tags, the semiotics of tagging and its influence on indexing are covered.

Perceived Support, Belonging, And Possible Selves Strategies Among Incarcerated Juvenile Offenders, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Colleen I. Murray Dec 2011

Perceived Support, Belonging, And Possible Selves Strategies Among Incarcerated Juvenile Offenders, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Colleen I. Murray

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Possible selves theory (Markus & Nurius, 1986) suggests that future-oriented expectations, fears, and strategies are constrained by feedback in one's sociocultural context. The current paper represents a preliminary look into the relationship between support in one's immediate context and the development of strategies for the achievement of desired future selves. Youthful offenders (N = 543) were surveyed in secured treatment facilities in Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon. Program belonging was a consistent predictor of strategy generation among both males and females, and attributional support from a staff person was significant among males. The findings support further examination …

Political Competition, Relative Deprivation, And Perceived Threat: A Research Note On Anti- Christian Violence In India, Chad Bauman, Tamara Leech Dec 2011

Political Competition, Relative Deprivation, And Perceived Threat: A Research Note On Anti- Christian Violence In India, Chad Bauman, Tamara Leech

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

A preliminary subnational statistical analysis of violence against Christians in contemporary India, this article suggests that whereas the data provide very little support for simple, demographic explanations of this violence, they do more robustly support theories emphasizing the relative status of ethnic and religious minorities (vis-à-vis majorities) and the perception, among Hindus, that Christians (and other minorities) represent a threat to their numerical, political and economic strength.

Robust Estimates Of Exporter Productivity Premia In German Business Services Enterprises, Alexander Vogel, Joachim Wagner Dec 2011

Robust Estimates Of Exporter Productivity Premia In German Business Services Enterprises, Alexander Vogel, Joachim Wagner

Economic and Business Review

A large and growing number of micro-econometric studies show that exporting firms are more productive than firms that sell their products on the home market only. This so-called exporter productivity premium qualifies as a stylized fact. Only recently researchers started to look at the role of extreme observations, or outliers, in shaping these findings. These studies use micro-econometric methods that are robust against outliers to show that very small shares of firms with extreme values drive the result. The large exporter productivity premium found for samples of firms including outliers are dramatically smaller in samples without these extreme observations. Evidence …

Firm Size And The Extensive Margin, Balázs Muraközy, László Halpern Dec 2011

Firm Size And The Extensive Margin, Balázs Muraközy, László Halpern

Economic and Business Review

In this paper we rely on firm-product-destination level data to analyze Hungarian trade expansion between 1992 and 2003. We decompose trade growth to the number of firms, the number of markets and products per firm, and analyze these dimensions by firm size. We also distinguish between new firms and continuing exporters. The results suggest that the majority of small exporters exit exporting after a few years, but the survivors grow very quickly in every dimension. Firm dynamics across size categories is intensive. Large exporters grow slowly, and macro shocks, destination market and product heterogeneity strongly affects their performance.

Productivity Measurement For International Firms, Anže Burger, Črt Kostevc, Sašo Polanec Dec 2011

Productivity Measurement For International Firms, Anže Burger, Črt Kostevc, Sašo Polanec

Economic and Business Review

This paper extends recent work by Martin (2005) on estimation of total factor productivity by allowing heterogeneity of markets in terms of competitive pressure. We show that conventional methods of total factor productivity estimation yield biased measures of TFP when firms charge market-specific prices. Specifically, if, as widely believed, exporting price-cost markups are, on average, lower than domestic markups, then traditional total factor productivity measures will substantially underestimate exporter productivity and overestimate the productivity of non-exporters. Crucially, our results provide some possible clues on why empirical studies failed to find conclusive evidence on the learning-by-exporting hypothesis.

Financial Integration And Financial Development In Transition Economies: What Happens During Financial Crises?, Arjana Brezigar-Masten, Fabrizio Coricelli, Igor Masten Dec 2011

Financial Integration And Financial Development In Transition Economies: What Happens During Financial Crises?, Arjana Brezigar-Masten, Fabrizio Coricelli, Igor Masten

Economic and Business Review

This paper provides an empirical analysis of the role of financial development and financial integration in the growth dynamics of transition countries. We focus on the role of financial integration in determining the impact of financial development on growth, distinguishing “normal times” from periods of financial crises. In addition to confirming the significant positive effect on growth exerted by financial development and financial integration, our estimates show that a higher degree of financial openness tends to reduce the contractionary effect of financial crises, by cushioning the effect on the domestic supply of credit. Consequently, the high reliance on international capital …

Critical And Phase-Equilibrium Properties Of An Ab Initio Based Potential Model Of Methanol And 1-Propanol Using Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Sonal Patel, W. Vincent Wilding, Richard L. Rowley Dec 2011

Critical And Phase-Equilibrium Properties Of An Ab Initio Based Potential Model Of Methanol And 1-Propanol Using Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Sonal Patel, W. Vincent Wilding, Richard L. Rowley

Faculty Publications

Two-phase molecular dynamics simulations employing a Monte Carlo volume sampling method were performed using an ab initio based force field model parameterized to reproduce quantum-mechanical dimer energies for methanol and 1-propanol at temperatures approaching the critical temperature. The intermolecular potential models were used to obtain the binodal vapor-liquid phase dome at temperatures to within about 10 K of the critical temperature. The efficacy of two all-atom, site-site pair potential models, developed solely from the energy landscape obtained from high-level ab initio pair interactions, was tested for the first time. The first model was regressed from the ab initio landscape without …

Differences In Export Behavior Of Services And Manufacturing Firms In Slovenia, Tanja Grublješič, Jože P. Damijan Dec 2011

Differences In Export Behavior Of Services And Manufacturing Firms In Slovenia, Tanja Grublješič, Jože P. Damijan

Economic and Business Review

We provide new comprehensive evidence on similarities and differences in export Behavior of Slovenian manufacturing and services firms by using detailed firm-level panel data for Slovenia. Main findings show that export Behavior in these two types of firms is similar and in line with the big picture that is by now familiar from the literature. Slovenian exporting services firms are more productive than non-exporting firms when observed and unobserved heterogeneity are controlled for. Export premia of services firms is even larger than for exporting manufacturing firms. Similarly, pre-entry premia over non-exporters is even larger than for manufacturing firms. We find …

Interstaple Dithiol Cross-Linking In Au 25(Sr) 18 Nanomolecules: A Combined Mass Spectrometric And Computational Study, Vijay Reddy Jupally, Rajesh Kota, Eric Van Dornshuld, Daniell L. Mattern, Gregory S. Tschumper, De En Jiang, Amala Dass Dec 2011

Interstaple Dithiol Cross-Linking In Au 25(Sr) 18 Nanomolecules: A Combined Mass Spectrometric And Computational Study, Vijay Reddy Jupally, Rajesh Kota, Eric Van Dornshuld, Daniell L. Mattern, Gregory S. Tschumper, De En Jiang, Amala Dass

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A systematic study of cross-linking chemistry of the Au 25(SR) 18 nanomolecule by dithiols of varying chain length, HS-(CH2)n-SH where n = 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, is presented here. Monothiolated Au25 has six [RSAuSRAuSR] staple motifs on its surface, and MALDI mass spectrometry data of the ligand exchanged clusters show that propane (C3) and butane (C4) dithiols have ideal chain lengths for interstaple cross-linking and that up to six C3 or C4 dithiols can be facilely exchanged onto the cluster surface. Propanedithiol predominately exchanges with two monothiols at a time, making cross-linking bridges, …

Construction Of Mse Wall Using Tire Shred-Sand Mixture As Backfill (Spr-3470), Monica Prezzi, Varenya Kumar Duvvuru Mohan Dec 2011

Construction Of Mse Wall Using Tire Shred-Sand Mixture As Backfill (Spr-3470), Monica Prezzi, Varenya Kumar Duvvuru Mohan

JTRP Other Publications and Reports

A large number of waste tires are generated each year throughout the world. Instead of disposing these tires in landfills, they can be used beneficially in road construction, MSE walls or structural fills that require large quantities of material. Such use of tires not only saves the costs of landfilling, but also provides certain desirable mechanical properties. The focus of this research was on determining important geotechnical properties of tire shred-sand mixtures required for their use as a lightweight backfill for MSE walls. Accordingly, the shear strength and pullout characteristics of tire shred-sand mixtures at various mixing ratios were determined …

Multi- Autonomous Vehicle Insertion-Extraction System (Mavies), Jamie C. Macbeth, Manal Habib, Armen Mkrtchyan, Missy Cummings

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

MAVIES (Multi-Autonomous Vehicle Insertion-Extraction System) is the culmination of a year-long multi-stakeholder e ort between UTRC and the Humans and Automation Lab at MIT to design a human inter- face for insertion and extraction missions with multiple UAVs and option- ally piloted rotorcraft. The design process is a successful application of the Hybrid Cognitive Task Analysis (hCTA) process that tracks dozens of tasks, decision-making processes and their associated situation aware- ness requirements to determine the proper allocation of responsibilities between the human operator and the automated mission planner.

This paper discusses the various accomplishments through several phases of a disciplined …
