Optical Polarization And Spectral Variability In The M87 Jet, Eric S. Perlman, Mihai Cara, Matthew Bourque, Raymond C. Simons Dec 2011

Optical Polarization And Spectral Variability In The M87 Jet, Eric S. Perlman, Mihai Cara, Matthew Bourque, Raymond C. Simons

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

During the last decade, M87's jet has been the site of an extraordinary variability event, with one knot (HST-1) increasing by over a factor 100 in brightness. Variability has also been seen on timescales of months in the nuclear flux. Here we discuss the optical-UV polarization and spectral variability of these components, which show vastly different behavior. HST-1 shows a highly significant correlation between flux and polarization, with P increasing from 20% at minimum to >40% at maximum, while the orientation of its electric vector stayed constant. HST-1's optical-UV spectrum is very hard (αUV-O 0.5, F ν ∞ ν-α), and …

On The Radio And Optical Luminosity Evolution Of Quasars, Jack Singal, V. Petrosian, A. Lawrence, L. Stawarz Dec 2011

On The Radio And Optical Luminosity Evolution Of Quasars, Jack Singal, V. Petrosian, A. Lawrence, L. Stawarz

Physics Faculty Publications

We calculate simultaneously the radio and optical luminosity evolutions of quasars, and the distribution in radio loudness R defined as the ratio of radio and optical luminosities, using a flux-limited data set containing 636 quasars with radio and optical fluxes from White et al. We first note that when dealing with multi-variate data it is imperative to first determine the true correlations among the variables, not those introduced by the observational selection effects, before obtaining the individual distributions of the variables. We use the methods developed by Efron and Petrosian which are designed to obtain unbiased correlations, distributions, and evolution …

Detection Of Micro Emboli Using Signal Energy And Discrete Fourier Transform / Basil Mathew Panamkuttiyil, Panamkuttiyil Basil Mathew Dec 2011

Detection Of Micro Emboli Using Signal Energy And Discrete Fourier Transform / Basil Mathew Panamkuttiyil, Panamkuttiyil Basil Mathew

Student Works (2010-2019)

A micro embolus is a plug of clot, fat, air or other material not normally found in blood that moves with flowing blood between two points in the circulation. Micro emboli have been detected with pathologies such as carotid artery disease, atrial fibrillation and also in association with implanted vascular devices, such as prosthetic heart valves or left ventricular assist devices. Conventional method for detecting the presence of emboli is done manually which is a very tedious procedure. In this case examiner needs to spend long time to detect emboli by visual or audio identification. This also can result in …

Self-Regenerating Nanotips For Low-Power Electric Propulsion (Ep) Cathodes, Lyon Bradley King Dec 2011

Self-Regenerating Nanotips For Low-Power Electric Propulsion (Ep) Cathodes, Lyon Bradley King

Michigan Tech Patents

Spindt-type field-emission cathodes for use in electric propulsion (EP) systems having self-assembling nanostructures that can repeatedly regenerate damaged cathode emitter nanotips. A nanotip is created by applying a negative potential near the surface of a liquefied base metal to create a Taylor cone converging to a nanotip, and solidifying the Taylor cone for use as a field-emission cathode. When the nanotip of the Taylor cone becomes sufficiently blunted or damaged to affect its utility, the base metal is re-liquefied by application of a heat source, a negative potential is reapplied to the surface of the base metal to recreate the …

Ordered Phases In Ruthenium Binary Alloys From High-Throughput First-Principles Calculations, Gus L. W. Hart, Lance J. Nelson, Michal Jahnátek, Ohad Levy, Roman V. Chepulskii, J. Xue, Stephano Curtarolo Dec 2011

Ordered Phases In Ruthenium Binary Alloys From High-Throughput First-Principles Calculations, Gus L. W. Hart, Lance J. Nelson, Michal Jahnátek, Ohad Levy, Roman V. Chepulskii, J. Xue, Stephano Curtarolo

Faculty Publications

Despite the increasing importance of ruthenium in numerous technological applications, e.g., catalysis and electronic devices, experimental and computational data on its binary alloys are sparse. In particular, data are scant on those binary systems believed to be phase-separating. We performed a comprehensive study of ruthenium binary systems with the 28 transition metals, using high-throughput first-principles calculations. These computations predict novel unsuspected compounds in 7 of the 16 binary systems previously believed to be phase-separating and in two of the three systems reported with only a high-temperature σ phase. They also predict a few unreported compounds in five additional systems and …

Catching A Cold: A Look At The Expected Contagion Effect Of Neighboring Income Inequality, Jared Dellinger Dec 2011

Catching A Cold: A Look At The Expected Contagion Effect Of Neighboring Income Inequality, Jared Dellinger

Master's Theses - Economics

Previous literature relative to income inequality has made available a number of demographic, economic, and policy determinants. This paper, using growth transmission literature as a basis for analysis, develops an argument showing that these results are biased and unreliable due to an omitted variable bias and a model misspecification. The model developed in this paper corrects for the bias by including a missing spatial factor that accounts for a contagion effect experienced by neighboring states. Income inequality is shown to be transmissible through multiple channels and may therefore be combatted only through a concerted group effort, rather than through individual …

Development Of Photographic Dynamic Measurements Applicable To Evaluation Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Jeremy C. Murray Dec 2011

Development Of Photographic Dynamic Measurements Applicable To Evaluation Of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles, Jeremy C. Murray

Theses and Dissertations

Developments in the area of flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) of a small size and with limited range. This has lead to a great deal of interest in biomimetric designs based on flapping wing flyers, including the North American Hawkmoth (Manduca Sexta). By utilizing high speed photography and photogrammetry the dynamic flapping of the wing can be characterized for comparison with mathematical models, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA).To successfully utilize high speed image capture, a method of successfully digitizing many data points in a short period of time needs to be developed. The effort …

Rice Consumption Contributes To Arsenic Exposure In Us Women, Diane Gilbert-Diamond, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Joann F. Gruber, Tracy Punshon, Vicki Sayarath, A. Jay Gandolfi, Emily R. Baker, Brian P. Jackson, Carol L. Folt, Margaret R. Karagas Dec 2011

Rice Consumption Contributes To Arsenic Exposure In Us Women, Diane Gilbert-Diamond, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Joann F. Gruber, Tracy Punshon, Vicki Sayarath, A. Jay Gandolfi, Emily R. Baker, Brian P. Jackson, Carol L. Folt, Margaret R. Karagas

Dartmouth Scholarship

Emerging data indicate that rice consumption may lead to potentially harmful arsenic exposure. However, few human data are available, and virtually none exist for vulnerable periods such as pregnancy. Here we document a positive association between rice consumption and urinary arsenic excretion, a biomarker of recent arsenic exposure, in 229 pregnant women. At a 6-mo prenatal visit, we collected a urine sample and 3-d dietary record for water, fish/seafood, and rice. We also tested women's home tap water for arsenic, which we combined with tap water consumption to estimate arsenic exposure through water. Women who reported rice intake (n …

Swept - Tone Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions: Stimulus Calibration And Equalization, Todor Mihajloski Dec 2011

Swept - Tone Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions: Stimulus Calibration And Equalization, Todor Mihajloski

Open Access Theses

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) are minute acoustic responses originating from the cochlea as a result of an external acoustic stimulus and are recorded using a sensitive microphone placed in the ear canal. OAEs are acquired by synchronous stimulation with an acoustic click or tone burst and recording of the post-stimulus responses. This method of acquiring OAEs is known as transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEAOE) and is commonly used in clinics as a screening method for hearing and cochlear functionality in infants. Recently, a novel method of acquiring OAEs utilizing a swept-tone, or chirp, as a stimulus was developed. This method used …
