Exemplary Practices Of Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Programs With High Pass Rates On The Nclex-Rn, Wynona (Nonie) Marie Wiggins

Student Theses and Dissertations

Baccalaureate nursing programs from the Southern Regional Educational Board whose NCLEX-RN pass rates met or exceeded the national pass rate for 2006-2008 consecutively and who had at least 60 candidates sit for the exam annually were studied to determine the practices utilized to have success on the NCLEX-RN. Fifty programs met the inclusion criteria and were invited to participate. Thirty programs accepted the invitations to participate in the study. Recorded telephone interviews with baccalaureate nursing program directors, chairs, or their designee were conducted. Most of the nursing programs were upper division traditional programs. Some also offered 2nd degree accelerated option. …

Are Three Flavors Special?, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora, M. Naeem Shahid Dec 2011

Are Three Flavors Special?, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora, M. Naeem Shahid

Physics - All Scholarship

It has become clearer recently that the regular pattern of three flavor nonets describing the low spin meson multiplets seems to require some modification for the case of the spin 0 scalar mesons. One picture which has had some success, treats the scalars in a chiral Lagrangian framework and considers them to populate two nonets. These are, in turn, taken to result from the mixing of two "bare" nonets, one of which is of quark- antiquark type and the other of two quark- two antiquark type. Here we show that such a mixing is, before chiral symmetry breaking terms are …

A Shared Gene Expression Signature In Mouse Models Of Ebv-Associated And Non-Ebv-Associated Burkitt Lymphoma, Kathryn T. Bieging, Kamonwan Fish, Subbarao Bondada, Richard Longnecker Dec 2011

A Shared Gene Expression Signature In Mouse Models Of Ebv-Associated And Non-Ebv-Associated Burkitt Lymphoma, Kathryn T. Bieging, Kamonwan Fish, Subbarao Bondada, Richard Longnecker

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The link between EBV infection and Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is strong, but the mechanism underlying that link has been elusive. We have developed a mouse model for EBV-associated BL in which LMP2A, an EBV latency protein, and MYC are expressed in B cells. Our model has demonstrated the ability of LMP2A to accelerate tumor onset, increase spleen size, and bypass p53 inactivation. Here we describe the results of total gene expression analysis of tumor and pretumor B cells from our transgenic mouse model. Although we see many phenotypic differences and changes in gene expression in pretumor B cells, the transcriptional …

Informing The Public: An Examination Of Government Press Releases During Thai Political Turbulences, Pimchanok Srijamlong Dec 2011

Informing The Public: An Examination Of Government Press Releases During Thai Political Turbulences, Pimchanok Srijamlong

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine Thai governments' press releases in the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT) website in two periods. The first period was from September 2005 to September 2006 and the second period was from December 2008 to May 2010. The two Thai governments mostly employed the social division frame in their press releases. There were highly different opinions between the groups of people who were against and those who supported these two governments. In addition, over half of stories had the conflict of interest frame, which showed one of possible reasons the crisis came …

Are You Textually Active?, Kandace Dyson Dec 2011

Are You Textually Active?, Kandace Dyson

Student Theses and Dissertations

Given the frequency of text messaging, there has been some concern about whether or not the use of text language among young people has a negative impact on the written form and comprehension of Standard English. Some believe that text language positively influences literacy skills; whereas, others believe that literacy skills are negatively influenced by its use. This study was designed to explore the knowledge of text language among college students enrolled in different levels of English courses and the relationship between text language knowledge and translation of a message written in text language to SE. Participants were asked to …

Investigation Of Select Ruthenium Compounds As Hds Catalyst Models, Leslie Wayne Foster Dec 2011

Investigation Of Select Ruthenium Compounds As Hds Catalyst Models, Leslie Wayne Foster

Student Theses and Dissertations

The hydordesulfurization (HDS) process is an industrial process that removes sulfur impurities from fossil fuel feedstocks prior to refining. This process includes the use of very high temperatures and pressures of H2 in combination with a sulfided transition metal catalyst. While the exact mechanism for the HDS process is unknown, there are continual strides in improving the process. Limitations in the current HDS models include non-sulfur ligands in the coordination sphere of the central metal. Attempted reactions of cis-[Ru(dmso)4Cl2] with tri-thiocarbonate gave the unexpected fac-[Ru(dmso)3Cl2(OH2)] compound. Successful thiol coordination to CpRu(PPh3)2+ has been demonstrated in the literature. Reactions of [ç6-C6H6RuCl2]2 …

A National Study Of Student Early Alert Models At Four-Year Institutions Of Higher Education, Jill Marie Simons Dec 2011

A National Study Of Student Early Alert Models At Four-Year Institutions Of Higher Education, Jill Marie Simons

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the state of student early alert models at nonprofit, four-year institutions of higher education through both quantitative and qualitative lenses. The use of these retention initiatives has become a much heralded practice on college campuses (Kuh, 2007a; Kuh 2007b; Seidman, 2005; Tinto, 2008). However, despite a growing trend, little documentation of these practices exists in the literature. Five broad research questions were posed to describe early alert programs. The questions sought to answer what is the nature of institutions with EAP systems, what are the major design elements, what constitutes program communication, …

Characteristics Of Extreme Droughts Inferred From Tree-Ring Data In The Qilian Mountains, 1700−2005, Yong Zhang, Xuemei Shao, Zhi-Yong Yin, Eryuan Liang, Qinhua Tian, Yan Xu

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Severe droughts were evaluated using a tree-ring network of 12 chronologies (1700−2005) from the Qilian Mountains on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. A total of 98 drought years, including 78 moderate, 15 severe, and 5 extreme events, were identified for the past 306 yr. Following the starting year of a drought phase, drought commonly continued for 1 to 2 yr. The spatial patterns of moisture conditions in central and eastern China corresponding to 19 major drought years during the period 1700−2000 were grouped into 3 clusters, with one particular pattern showing droughts of nation-wide impact (i.e. 1721, 1928 and 1966). Drought …

Children's Knowledge Of Healthy And Unhealthy Foods And Its Correlation With Body Mass Index, Sally Elizabeth Allen Dec 2011

Children's Knowledge Of Healthy And Unhealthy Foods And Its Correlation With Body Mass Index, Sally Elizabeth Allen

Student Theses and Dissertations

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in America. Children's knowledge of healthy and unhealthy food could be correlated to their Body Mass Index (BMI). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between children's BMI and their knowledge of healthy and unhealthy foods and to determine if any knowledge differences exist between overweight, obese, and healthy weight children. Participants were 54 kindergarten and 1st grade students in a small rural Arkansas school district. Data were collected quantitatively through a) a 40 question flashcard test in which participants were asked to identify the name of …

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

As in other eukaryotes, protein kinases play major regulatory roles in filamentous fungi. Although the genomes of many plant pathogenic fungi have been sequenced, systematic characterization of their kinomes has not been reported. The wheat scab fungus Fusarium graminearum has 116 protein kinases (PK) genes. Although twenty of them appeared to be essential, we generated deletion mutants for the other 96 PK genes, including 12 orthologs of essential genes in yeast. All of the PK mutants were assayed for changes in 17 phenotypes, including growth, conidiation, pathogenesis, stress responses, and sexual reproduction. Overall, deletion of 64 PK genes resulted in …

High Connectivity In The Deepwater Snapper Pristipomoides Filamentosus (Lutjanidae) Across The Indo-Pacific With Isolation Of The Hawaiian Archipelago, Michelle R. Gaither, Shelley A. Jones, Christopher Kelley, Stephen J. Newman, Laurie Sorenson, Brian W. Bowen Dec 2011

High Connectivity In The Deepwater Snapper Pristipomoides Filamentosus (Lutjanidae) Across The Indo-Pacific With Isolation Of The Hawaiian Archipelago, Michelle R. Gaither, Shelley A. Jones, Christopher Kelley, Stephen J. Newman, Laurie Sorenson, Brian W. Bowen

Fisheries Research Articles

In the tropical Indo-Pacific, most phylogeographic studies have focused on the shallow-water taxa that inhabit reefs to approximately 30 m depth. Little is known about the large predatory fishes, primarily snappers (subfamily Etelinae) and groupers (subfamily Epinephelinae) that occur at 100–400 m. These long-lived, slow-growing species support fisheries across the Indo-Pacific, yet no comprehensive genetic surveys within this group have been conducted. Here we contribute the first range-wide survey of a deepwater Indo-Pacific snapper, Pristipomoides filamentosus, with special focus on Hawai'i. We applied mtDNA cytochrome b and 11 microsatellite loci to 26 samples (N = 1,222) collected across …

Ensemble Forecast Spread Induced By Soil Moisture Changes Over Mid-South And Neighbouring Midwestern Region Of The Usa, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood Dec 2011

Ensemble Forecast Spread Induced By Soil Moisture Changes Over Mid-South And Neighbouring Midwestern Region Of The Usa, Arturo I. Quintanar, Rezaul Mahmood

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This study investigated the potential impact of soil moisture perturbations on the statistical spread of an ensemble forecast for three different synoptic events during the summer of 2006. Soil moisture was perturbed from a control simulation to generate a 12 member ensemble with six drier and six moister soils. The impacts on the near-surface atmospheric conditions and on precipitation were analysed. It was found, as previous studies have confirmed, that soil moisture can change the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation and of the overlying circulation. It was found that regardless of the conditions in synoptic forcing, temperature, relative humidity …
