Effect Of Au Content On Microstructural Evolution Of Snagcu Solder Joints That Undergo Isothermal Aging And Reliability Testing, Patrick J. Hyland Aug 2011

Effect Of Au Content On Microstructural Evolution Of Snagcu Solder Joints That Undergo Isothermal Aging And Reliability Testing, Patrick J. Hyland

Master's Theses

Electronics, especially, printed circuit boards (PCBs) are a widespread technology. Metal coatings or “surface finishes” are often added to PCB board pads and component leads during manufacturing to improve their performance. Electroplated nickel/gold over copper is a popular surface finish for printed circuit boards and component leads. The presence of gold in solder joints, however, is known to have detrimental effects referred to as gold embrittlement. It is generally understood that tin-lead solder joints with less than 3 weight percent (wt%) of gold will not experience reliability issues. The acceptable level of gold in lead-free solder joints, however, is less …

Net Operating Losses, Philip E. Harris Aug 2011

Net Operating Losses, Philip E. Harris

Rural Tax Education

Weather, disease and variable prices for inputs and commodities cause farmer’s income to fluctuate from one year to the next. Farmers can minimize their income tax liability by managing the timing of their income and deductions to keep their taxable income level. In some cases, the leveling technique is not enough to avoid a spike in taxable income or a dip that causes taxable income to go below zero. The tax effect of the spikes can be minimized with income averaging rules. The tax effect of the dips below zero can be managed with the net operating loss (NOL) rules …

"Introduction" (Chapter 1) Of Stories About Science In Law: Literary And Historical Images Of Acquired Expertise (Ashgate 2011), David S. Caudill Aug 2011

"Introduction" (Chapter 1) Of Stories About Science In Law: Literary And Historical Images Of Acquired Expertise (Ashgate 2011), David S. Caudill

Working Paper Series

This is the introductory chapter of Stories About Science in Law: Literary and Historical Images of Acquired Expertise (Ashgate, 2011), explaining that the book presents examples of how literary accounts can provide a supplement to our understanding of science in law. Challenging the view that law and science are completely different, I focus on stories that explore the relationship between law and science, and identify cultural images of science that prevail in legal contexts. In contrast to other studies on the transfer and construction of expertise in legal settings, the book considers the intersection of three interdisciplinary projects-- law and …

Creating A More Efficient And Effective Food Safety System In Memphis And Shelby County, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project Aug 2011

Creating A More Efficient And Effective Food Safety System In Memphis And Shelby County, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

The taste of a fresh-picked peach on a warm summer day is one of life’s simple joys. A store-bought peach can never truly replicate the experience. But in Memphis, getting that peach from the farmer’s tree into the customer’s hand is not as simple as one would assume. The fruit cannot be simply picked from the tree and then sold from the back of a produce truck. Instead, someone wanting to sell these fruits from his truck must obtain a permit and conform to outdated rules, such as the requirement for the truck to remain in motion at all times …

Assessment Of The Risks Associated With The Release Of Abalone Sourced From Abalone Hatcheries For Enhancement Or Marine Grow-Out In The Open Ocean Areas Of Wa, Brian J. Jones, Warrick Fletcher

Fisheries Research Reports

The virus that causes Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) is considered to be exotic to Western Australia (WA). The known distribution includes Victoria, Tasmania and Taiwan. There are a number of known strains of the virus; Tasmanian strains do not (to date) cause mortalities in wild abalone (but do so in farms and processing facilities). Victorian and Taiwanese strains cause high mortalities in wild abalone. Despite active surveillance, the virus has not been found in NSW, South Australia or Western Australia but there is a low likelihood that WA specific strains may exist undetected.

Pilot Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Electronic Monitoring On A Demersal Gillnet Vessel As An Alternative To Human Observers, R Evans, Brett Molony

Fisheries Research Reports

A large number of documents exist in peer reviewed and ‘grey’ scientific literature that describe ‘how to’ establish a generic observer program for bycatch. Rather than repeat the many reviews of establishing observer programs, this component of WAMSI project 4.4.1 undertook a pilot trial to test the efficacy of using Electronic Monitoring (EM) in place of on-board human observers to record and identify the catch composition of a commercial demersal gillnet vessel. Approximately 80% of all catch (including target, by-product and bycatch species), including interactions with threatened, endangered and protected species (TEPS) could be identified to the same taxon as …

Addressing Biased Occurrence Data In Predicting Potential Sierra Nevada Red Fox Habitat For Survey Prioritization, Casey Cleve, John D. Perrine, Barbara Holzman, Ellen Hines

Biological Sciences

The Sierra Nevada red fox Vulpes vulpes necator is listed as a threatened species under the California Endangered Species Act. It originally occurred throughout California’s Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain regions. Its current distribution is unknown but should be determined in order to guide management actions. We used occurrence data from the only known population, in the Lassen Peak region of northern California, combined with climatic and remotely sensed variables, to predict the species’ potential distribution throughout its historic range. These model predictions can guide future surveys to locate additional fox populations. Moreover, they allow us to compare the relative …

Stinky Pinkies: Variations, A. Ross Eckler Aug 2011

Stinky Pinkies: Variations, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

The standard stinky pinky is a two-word rhyming phrase such as FLOWER POWER or HAIRY LARRY. Common variations are achieved by inserting words such as THE or 'N' (as in SLICE IT 'n' ICE IT, to skin and freeze an animal, or CATCH the SCRATCH, to contract a case of poison ivy). Buzzwords (Crown Publishers, 1993) has a variety of unusual variations; a type-collection is given below.

Word Ways

We intrepid logologists love to switch around letters within words -- adjacent letters (UNITED UNTIED), separated letters (CONVERSATION CONSERVATION), and initial and terminal letters (LATCHES SATCHEL). In some words we can interchange each half to form new words. Dmitri Borgmann called these leapfrogging specimens "cyclic transpositions." I prefer the more playful "fortunate reversals."

Totally Extreme Words, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

Consider the word CLIFF. The first letter (C) has an alphabetical value of 3; the last letter (F) a value of 6. Coincidentally, the total value of the whole word is 36. CLIFF is what I call a totally extreme word. However, it doesn't end there. The total value of the middle letters situated between C and F is 27, which is 9 times the value of the first letter, C.

School Refusal Behavior: A Phenomenological Study Of Latino/A Children's Experiences, Mary Ashley Angelo Aug 2011

School Refusal Behavior: A Phenomenological Study Of Latino/A Children's Experiences, Mary Ashley Angelo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School refusal behavior (SRB) is a subset of absenteeism in which children either altogether refuse to attend school or experience great difficulty remaining in class for the duration of the school day. Child motivated SRB is a growing problem that now affects between 5% and 28% of children and adolescents at some point during their lives. The effects of SRB can extend well beyond the classroom. Long-term, SRB can lead to delinquency and psychiatric, occupational, and marital problems in adulthood. Additionally, children who consistently exhibit SRB are more likely to drop out of school, thereby limiting their career choices and …

Drowning Deaths In The Nearshore Marine Waters Of The Island Of Kauai, Hawaii 1970-2009, Charles Troy Blay Aug 2011

Drowning Deaths In The Nearshore Marine Waters Of The Island Of Kauai, Hawaii 1970-2009, Charles Troy Blay

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Drowning is the number one cause of unintentional injury death on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Steep submarine slopes, large waves, and variable coastlines combine to create hazardous conditions year round. Most victims (3/4) have been visitors (avg. age 46.2 years; 85% male), dying at more than 40 coastal localities. From 1970 to 2009, 300 people died at the island’s coastline, the death rate increasing from 5.5/yr (1970-79) to 10.1/yr (2000-09). Paradoxically, the number of lifeguards increased from a handful at two 1970’s stations to 45 at 10 stations by 2009. Kauai County provides lifeguards; the State of Hawaii emphasizes …

Santo Toribio: The Rise Of A Saint, Thomas G. Evans Aug 2011

Santo Toribio: The Rise Of A Saint, Thomas G. Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Santo Toribio (1900-28) was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 2000 as a martyr of Mexico's bloody Cristero Rebellion. He enjoyed a modest local following for decades after the Rebellion as many of the other Cristero martyr-saints did. However, around the time of his canonization, a new identity began to emerge different from that of martyr; he became the patron saint of immigration. For believers, Santo Toribio helps mitigate the criminal nature of this act by showing God's approval and blessing. He places the pain and social distortion of Border crossing in Roman Catholic contexts of holiness and divine …

Sound Production In Two Loricariid Catfishes, Amanda Lynn Webb Aug 2011

Sound Production In Two Loricariid Catfishes, Amanda Lynn Webb

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many families of catfish produce sounds via pectoral spine stridulation and/or swim bladder compression using sonic muscles attached to the swim bladder. The sound production capabilities and characteristics in Loricariidae, the largest catfish family, have not been well examined. Sounds produced by two loricariid catfish species, Macrotocinclus affinis and Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps were recorded. Both species produce broad band calls via pectoral spine stridulation. These species produce sounds by rubbing the ridges of the dorsal process of the pectoral spine base against the groove of the pectoral girdle. Call duration was generally shorter in M. affinis (2-15 ms) as opposed to …

Action Spectrum For Photoentrainment Of The Circadian Clock In Wild-Type Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Jennifer Forbes=Stovall Aug 2011

Action Spectrum For Photoentrainment Of The Circadian Clock In Wild-Type Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Jennifer Forbes=Stovall

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The circadian clock is an endogenous timer that oscillates with a period of approximately 24 hours and is reset upon environmental time cues such as the daily light/ dark or temperature cycles. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is an ideal model organism for research on the circadian clock, because it shows several well-characterized behaviors that exhibit a circadian rhythm. Its circadian rhythm of phototaxis (swimming toward light) has been automated. Former action spectrum studies using the circadian phototaxis rhythm as an indicator surprisingly found that pulses of blue light were not effective in resetting the circadian clock of dark-adapted cells. This may have …

The Relationship Of Dominance, Reproductive State And Stress In A Non-Cooperative Breeder, The Domestic Horse (Equus Caballus), Carly Anne Sinderbrand Aug 2011

The Relationship Of Dominance, Reproductive State And Stress In A Non-Cooperative Breeder, The Domestic Horse (Equus Caballus), Carly Anne Sinderbrand

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Animals that live in a social group are often organized in a hierarchy with rank determining access to resources. Maintaining a dominant position requires a high rate of energetically expensive aggressive displays and physical exertion. Lab based winnerloser studies, often conducted with individuals from non-social species, have shown that subordinates have higher stress hormone levels than dominant individuals (subordinatestress hypothesis). However, in carnivorous animals that are cooperative breeders, displays of aggression are associated with elevated stress hormone levels (dominancestress hypothesis). The effect of reproductive state on dominance and stress is not addressed within either of these hypotheses. The purpose of …

The Cumulative Impact Of Sexual Revictimization On Emotion Regulation Difficulties: An Examination Of Female Inmates, Kate Walsh, David K. Dilillo, Mario J. Scalora Aug 2011

The Cumulative Impact Of Sexual Revictimization On Emotion Regulation Difficulties: An Examination Of Female Inmates, Kate Walsh, David K. Dilillo, Mario J. Scalora

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study examined associations between child sexual abuse (CSA), adult sexual victimization, and emotion regulation difficulties in a sample of 168 incarcerated women. Approximately 50% of the participants reported CSA, 54% reported adult sexual victimization, and 38% reported sexual revictimization (i.e., CSA and adult victimization). Revictimized women reported significantly greater difficulties with several facets of emotion regulation when compared to singly victimized and nonvictimized women. Interestingly, singly victimized women did not demonstrate greater emotion regulation deficits when compared to nonvictims. Findings suggest that the negative impact of victimization experiences on adult emotion regulation abilities may be cumulative. Furthermore, they …
