Aging And Selective Attention In Causal Learning, Melanie Waldrop Asriel
Aging And Selective Attention In Causal Learning, Melanie Waldrop Asriel
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study investigated age differences in generalization of causal value employing similarity as a cue to causality. Exemplars from six food categories (A+, B-, C+, D-. E+, F-) were presented to both young and older adults in two contiguous training phases. Training Phase 1 included exemplars from categories A+, B-, C+, D-. Training Phase 2 included exemplars from A+, B-, E+, F-. Foods in the “+” categories were paired with an outcome of sickness and foods in the “-” categories were not paired with sickness. Tests of causal judgment and exemplar recognition were conducted. For causal judgment, individual exemplars experienced …

Comprehension Of Functional Support By Enculturated Chimpanzees Pan Troglodytes, Anna M. Yocom, Sarah T. Boysen
Sentience Collection
Studies of causal understanding of tool relationships in captive chimpanzees have yielded disparate findings, particularly those reported by Povinelli & colleagues (2000) for tool tasks by laboratory chimpanzees. The present set of experiments tested nine enculturated chimpanzees on three versions of a support task, as described by Povinelli (2000), during which food rewards were presented in different experimental configurations. In Experiment 1, stimulus pairs included a choice between a cloth with a reward on the upper right corner or with a second reward off the cloth, adjacent to a corner, with the second pair comprised of a cloth with food …

Kinesiology and Public Health
Hypovitaminosis D may be associated with diabetes, hypertension and CHD. However, because studies examining the associations of all three chronic conditions with circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(0H)D) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(0H)2D) are limited, we examined these associations in the US Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial (n 2465). Caucasian PLCO participants selected as controls in previous nested case-control studies of 25(0H)D and 1,25(0H)2D were included in this analysis. Diabetes, CHD and hypertension prevalence, risk factors for these conditions and intake of vitamin D and Ca were collected from a baseline questionnaire. Results indicated …
Posttraumatic Distress As Experienced By Adolescents: Traumatic Stress Through Adolescent Eyes, Andrea Saul
Posttraumatic Distress As Experienced By Adolescents: Traumatic Stress Through Adolescent Eyes, Andrea Saul
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation expands research regarding the types of stressors associated with PTSD among adolescents. The study utilized a broad sample of youth who were specifically queried regarding traumatic stressors and their perception of risk of death or serious injury associated with these experiences in order to examine the current DSM-IV PTSD criteria A. The impact of other significant life stressors generally recognized to fall outside the PTSD A1 criterion but that may be perceived or experienced as traumatic through the developmental lens of adolescence were also explored. The inclusion of multiple types of trauma and indicators of repeated trauma allowed …

Population Genetic Structure Of Lemon Sharks In The Western Atlantic: Is There Evidence Of Gender-Biased Dispersal And Differences Between Neutral And Adaptive Loci?, Jimiane Lee Ashe
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Sampling difficulties and low genetic diversity have limited population genetic studies of large, vagile shark species. Through extensive sampling (580 individuals from 12 locations) and a multilocus approach involving two mitochondrial DNA loci (control region and ND2, composite sequence 1,730 bp) and eight microsatellites, I was able to delineate the population genetic structure of the lemon shark, Negaprion brevirostris, in the western Atlantic. I articulated two hypotheses to explain genetic structure in coastal sharks: (1) females exhibit natal philopatry to parturition sites, resulting in local population structure and (2) males are dispersive, resulting in high male-mediated gene flow. I predicted …
The Functional Morphology Of Subchondral And Trabecular Bone In The Hominoid Tibiotalar Joint, Anne Su
The Functional Morphology Of Subchondral And Trabecular Bone In The Hominoid Tibiotalar Joint, Anne Su
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation investigated whether the internal bone morphology of the distal tibia and talus may help to further clarify the controversial mosaics of external morphological traits previously found in fossil hominin ankle bones that have suggested varying levels of obligate bipedal and arboreal abilities. The morphology of both subchondral bone and trabecular bone has independently been hypothesized to reflect habitual loads incurred during life. This dissertation examined these properties concurrently in a single joint to test if these properties were consistent with each other and consistent in reflecting known and assumed habitual joint loads. Using micro-CT scans from humans, chimpanzees, …
Assessing The Role Of Amyloid Beta In Alzheimer's Disease Using The 5xfad And Tgswdi Transgenic Mouse Strains, Wen Jin Xu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The Amyloid Cascade theory of Alzheimer's disease (AD) states that formation and accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain leads to deleterious downstream effects such as neurodegeneration and gliosis that ultimately cause behavioral deficits and memory loss. In recent years however, the exact role amyloid beta (A&beta) plays in AD has come into question. The most prevalent theory is that amyloid plaque deposition in the parenchyma is the main contributor of pathology in AD. More recent hypotheses state that A&beta deposition in the neural microvasculature in the form of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) plays a central role in AD. The …
The Effects Of Self-Expansion In Relationships On Nicotine Craving In Deprived Smokers: Fmri And Behavioral Evidence, Xiaomeng Xu
The Effects Of Self-Expansion In Relationships On Nicotine Craving In Deprived Smokers: Fmri And Behavioral Evidence, Xiaomeng Xu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
fMRI studies have found that brain areas associated with the reward of relationship self-expansion are also the same areas that are associated with the reward of smoking cigarettes (Aron et al. | 2005; Ikemoto et al. | 2006; Xu et al. | 2011). This raises the possibility that one reward may be able to substitute for another, and that self-expansion may be able to aid in smoking abstinence and cessation. One recent study found that successful quitters experienced significantly more self-expanding experiences (both in and out of the relationships context) immediately prior to their quitting, and even unsuccessful quitters were …

Joint Genetic And Microrna Study Of The Human Thrombocytosis Under A System Biology Scheme, Xiao Xu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The disease of human thrombocytosis is a type of myeloproliferative disorder (MPD) characterized by a complex alteration of genetic and epigenetic factors. Consequently, the pathological cellular environment is permeated by transcriptomic deregulation, interferomic aberrations, protein level irregularity and disrupted cellular pathways. In this dissertation, we present a novel study of the human thrombocytosis disease through a multi-layered genetic, microRNA and proteomic platelet modeling and analysis in a systems biology scheme. This includes (1) the extraction of distinctive messenger RNA and microRNA expression profiles in human platelets for two subtypes of thrombocytosis patients versus the normal control group, (2) the derivation …

This thesis is about my progress from photography to video installation. There is an exploration of my use of material, such as light, porcelain, photography and video and the importance of the screen with the pieces. While discussing the use of the screen, attention is paid to the process of using photography and how it evolved from photography to video. There is also a discussion of my progress from thinking two dimensionally within the space, one point perspective of the image, going towards the expansion of the work into the space. Although the work has evolved from photography to video …
On The Anelastic Behavior Of Plasma Sprayed Ceramic Coatings: Observations, Characterizations And Applications, Gopal Dwivedi
On The Anelastic Behavior Of Plasma Sprayed Ceramic Coatings: Observations, Characterizations And Applications, Gopal Dwivedi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Plasma sprayed ceramic materials contain an assortment of microstructural defects, including pores, cracks, and interfaces arising from the droplet based assemblage of the spray deposition technique. The defective architecture of the deposits introduces a novel anelastic response in the coatings comprising of their non-linear and hysteretic stress-strain relationship under mechanical loading. It has been established that this anelasticity can be attributed to the relative movement of the embedded defects under varying stresses; while the non-linear response of the coatings arises from the opening/closure of defects, hysteresis is produced by the frictional sliding among defect surfaces. Recent studies have indicated that …
In Search Of Mirna Function In The Mouse Neocortex And Cerebellum, Miao He
In Search Of Mirna Function In The Mouse Neocortex And Cerebellum, Miao He
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
MicroRNAs (miRNA) are implicated in brain development and function, but the underlying mechanisms have been difficult to study in part due to the cellular heterogeneity in neural circuits. The cellular diversity of the brain necessitates studies at the level of individual neuron types. During my thesis research, I have taken two complementary approaches to study miRNA function in mouse neocortex and cerebellum. One is to analyze cell type specific miRNA expression profiles, and the other is to disrupt miRNA production in subpopulations of cortical GABAergic neurons. To establish genetic access of diverse interneuron subtypes, our laboratory has initiated the first …
Mechanisms Underlying Angiotensin Ii Type 1 Receptor Mediated Electrical Remodeling In Left Ventricular Myocytes, Jeremy Kim
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor is a G protein coupled receptor that is highly active in various cardiac disease states. Both the AT1 receptor and its primary effector, angiotensin II (A2), are known to be expressed in cardiac tissue. AT1 receptor activation leads to the transactivation of various intracellular signaling pathways that are known to be responsible for physiological and pathological changes in both cardiac structure and function. In particular, AT1 receptors are involved in physiological adaptation to increased hemodynamic load, but they are also involved in the development of pathological cardiac hypertrophy, …
Fluid Structure Interaction (Fsi) For Evaluation Of Biomedical Implant Devices For Novel Hypertension Treatment Therapy, Dinesh Amirtharaj Peter
Fluid Structure Interaction (Fsi) For Evaluation Of Biomedical Implant Devices For Novel Hypertension Treatment Therapy, Dinesh Amirtharaj Peter
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Drug-resistant hypertensive patients may be treated by mechanical stimulation of stretch-sensitive baroreceptors located in the sinus of carotid arteries. To evaluate the ability of custom devices to stretch the carotid sinus such that the induced stretch might trigger baroreceptors to increase action potential firing rate and thereby reduce hypertension, numerical simulations were conducted of several biomedical implant devices deployed in subject based carotid models. Two different carotid models were chosen to serve as virtual vascular environment for device deployment evaluation - a physiologic model and a diminutive non-physiologic model. Extravascular and endovascular device designs, custom built for the carotid models, …

Relationship Patterns And Dream Content: Attachment Security, Emotions And Relational Scenarios In Dreams Containing Romantic Partners., Dylan Selterman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The current study examined associations between attachment/relational variables in waking life and in sleep mentation (dream content). The general prediction was that individuals in dating relationships would have dreams about romantic partners and relational situations that reflected the dynamics of their relationships in waking life, arising from personal feelings of security as well as interactions with romantic partners on specific days. Sixty-one young adults in committed dating relationships participated in the study. Participants completed measures of attachment, relationship interdependence, and closeness, followed by a two-week daily diary of dream reports and their interactions with romantic partners each day. Participants reported …
The Complexity Of Domestic Interiors: Laurie Simmons's Depiction Of Women's Identity In The Home, Lauren Elise Cesiro
The Complexity Of Domestic Interiors: Laurie Simmons's Depiction Of Women's Identity In The Home, Lauren Elise Cesiro
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Laurie Simmons was among a group of artists in the 1980’s working in photography, film, video, and performance who recognized the influence of the mass media on the American public. Simmons used her art practice to comment on these images tailored to the consumer. Much of her photographic work of dolls and dollhouses challenges the viewer’s concept of the relationship between women and their domestic interiors. This thesis examines three photographs from the following series: Color Coordinated Interiors (1982-1983), The Instant Decorator (2001-2004), and The Long House (2002-2004). In these series, Simmons presents the home as a complex environment that …

A Longitudinal Study Of Fetal Tissue Transplantation Surgery For The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease: Can Quality Of Life And Optimism At Baseline Predict Patient Outcome 10 Years Later?, Emily B. Fazio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and progressive condition that affects the physical, emotional, and social functioning of individuals. Freed et al. (2001) conducted a double-blind sham-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness of fetal tissue transplantation for the treatment of advanced PD. The authors of that study examined the effects of the surgery across the dimensions of physical and neurological functioning. A quality of life (QoL) study was conducted to determine if there were differences in QoL when comparing those who received the fetal tissue transplantation with those who received the sham surgery (McRae et al., 2004).
