Community-Based Instruction And Vocational Learning In Special Education: A Meta-Synthesis, Sean A. Joslyn Aug 2011

Community-Based Instruction And Vocational Learning In Special Education: A Meta-Synthesis, Sean A. Joslyn

Special Education Masters Program Theses

This meta-synthesis on community-based instruction and vocational learning in special education explores the training and skills individuals with disabilities require need to survive and thrive in employment and post-school activities designed to improve self-reliance, personal responsibility, and increase exposure to the community and all of the activities and opportunities that exist there. Substantial barriers must be addressed for all individuals with disabilities, but particularly for those individuals with moderate to more severe disabilities. Through proper trainings, and the utilization of the necessary tools and equipment, individuals with disabilities will continue to increasingly transition into meaningful employment and community-based programs intended …

Formation, Grace, And Pneumatology: Or, Where's The Spirit In Gregory's Augustine?, James K.A. Smith

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Eric Gregory's Politics and the Order of Love takes up an audacious project: enlisting Saint Augustine in order to “help imagine a better liberalism.” This article first provides a summary of Gregory's argument, focusing on his emphasis on love as a “motivation” for neighborly care, and hence democratic participation. This involves tracing the theme of motivation in the book, which is tied to his articulation of liberal perfectionism and an emphasis on civic virtue. In conclusion I raise the question of whether his project has ignored a key aspect of Augustine's account of love, namely, the role of the Holy …

The Characterization Of Avian Polyomavirus, Satellite Tobacco Mosaic Virus, And Bacteriophage Cw02 By Means Of Cryogenic Electron Microscopy, Peter S. Shen

Theses and Dissertations

Viruses are the most abundant biological entity in the biosphere and are known to infect hosts from all domains of life. The aim of my work is to identify conserved and non-conserved features among the capsid structures of related and divergent icosahedral viruses via cryogenic electron microscopy, sequence analysis, molecular modeling, and other techniques. Bird polyomaviruses often cause severe disease in their hosts whereas mammalian polyomaviruses generally do not. Avian polyomavirus is a type of bird polyomavirus with an unusually broad host range compared to the restricted tropism of other polyomaviruses. Although most polyomaviruses have a conserved, rigid capsid protein …

Carotid Plaque Regression Following 6-Month Statin Therapy Assessed By 3t Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance: Comparison With Ultrasound Intima Media Thickness, Raymond Q. Migrino, Mark Bowers, Leanne Harmann, Robert W. Prost, John F. Ladisa Aug 2011

Carotid Plaque Regression Following 6-Month Statin Therapy Assessed By 3t Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance: Comparison With Ultrasound Intima Media Thickness, Raymond Q. Migrino, Mark Bowers, Leanne Harmann, Robert W. Prost, John F. Ladisa

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows volumetric carotid plaque measurement that has advantage over 2-dimensional ultrasound (US) intima-media thickness (IMT) in evaluating treatment response. We tested the hypothesis that 6-month statin treatment in patients with carotid plaque will lead to plaque regression when measured by 3 Tesla CMR but not by IMT.

Methods

Twenty-six subjects (67 ± 2 years, 7 females) with known carotid plaque (> 1.1 mm) and coronary or cerebrovascular atherosclerotic disease underwent 3T CMR (T1, T2, proton density and time of flight sequences) and US at baseline and following 6 months of statin therapy (6 had initiation, …

Educational Attainment: Success To The Successful, Peter John Anthony, David Gould, Gina Smith Aug 2011

Educational Attainment: Success To The Successful, Peter John Anthony, David Gould, Gina Smith

Higher Learning Research Communications

Systems archetypes are patterns of structure found in systems that are helpful in understanding some of the dynamics within them. The intent of this study was to examine educational attainment data using the success-to-the-successful archetype as a model to see if it helps to explain the inequality observed in the data. Data covering 1990 to 2009 was collected from the United States Census Bureau for the United States, as well as for the States of Georgia and Washington. Findings indicated that this archetype is useful in explaining the variation, and there are several other terms and concepts that are helpful …

Male Mating Competitiveness Of A Wolbachia-Introgressed Aedes Polynesiensis Strain Under Semi-Field Conditions, Eric W. Chambers, Limb Hapairai, Bethany A. Peel, Hervé Bossin, Stephen L. Dobson

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a global public health problem affecting approximately 120 million people worldwide, is a leading cause of disability in the developing world including the South Pacific. Despite decades of ongoing mass drug administration (MDA) in the region, some island nations have not yet achieved the threshold levels of microfilaremia established by the World Health Organization for eliminating transmission. Previously, the generation of a novel Aedes polynesiensis strain (CP) infected with an exogenous type of Wolbachia has been described. The CP mosquito is cytoplasmically incompatible (i.e., effectively sterile) when mated with wildtype mosquitoes, and a strategy was proposed …

Interspecies Comparison Of Αii-Spectrin Abundance Between Chinook Salmon And Steelhead, Brielle D. Kemis, Ann L. Miracle, Katie A. Wagner, Christa M. Woodley

STAR Program Research Presentations

Salmonids, such as Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead (O. mykiss), are a staple economic, recreational, tribal, and environmental resource, yet many populations are unsustainable. This study was part of a broad scale effort to monitor the impact of downstream migration obstacles on juvenile salmonid health and survival, which is an essential step towards increasing Smolt-to-Adult Return ratios (SARs). The objective of this study was to determine if juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead exhibit differing quantities of alphaII-Spectrin Breakdown Products (SBDPs) over two consecutive spring migration periods, indicative of neurogenesis rate and/or biological response to head …

An Intelligent Supply Chain Planning And Execution Environment, Jens Pohl Aug 2011

An Intelligent Supply Chain Planning And Execution Environment, Jens Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Logistic planning and execution processes in a supply-chain are subject to a high level of complexity because of the number of parties and issues involved, the number of relationships that exist among them, and the dynamic nature of the execution environment. The large volume of data flowing through a sizable computer-based logistic planning and execution management environment that is based on rote data-processing principles tends to overwhelm the human users. As a result many opportunities for improving the efficiency of supply-chain processes and thereby reducing costs are overlooked by the human users, who are forced into a reactive mode. Similar …

Writing A Feminist Ethnography: A Comparative Analysis Of Iranian Women's Stories Of Resistance And Agency In Iran And America, Tanja B. Messing Aug 2011

Writing A Feminist Ethnography: A Comparative Analysis Of Iranian Women's Stories Of Resistance And Agency In Iran And America, Tanja B. Messing

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this project works against the stigmatization of Middle Eastern women in the West by examining women's experiences of resistance and agency within the diaspora and in Iran. Through a feminist ethnographic analysis of Iranian women's narratives, I work against Western stereotypes as a way to problematize the assumption that immersion in Western culture "saves" Middle Eastern women from their supposed cultural and religious "victimization." The focus of my inquiry is centered on four issues, or themes, of analysis, which are: everyday acts of resistance, subversion, and negotiation, issues of dress, household dynamics, and women's values and self-expression. …

The Impaired Bone Anabolic Effect Of Pth In The Absence Of Endogenous Fgf2 Is Partially Due To Reduced Atf4 Expression, Yurong Fei, Liping Xiao, Marja M. Hurley

UCHC Articles - Research

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is currently the only approved anabolic agent for osteoporosis pharmacotherapy in the USA. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying which intermittent PTH stimulates bone formation are not fully established.

Activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) was recently identified to be a downstream target of PTH signaling in osteoblasts and FGF2 is able to rapidly increase ATF4 mRNA and protein expression in osteoblasts. Furthermore, ATF4 expression is markedly reduced in Fgf2−/− osteoblasts. In addition, FGF2 is required for the anabolic action of PTH on bone formation. Therefore, we hypothesize that the impaired anabolic effect of PTH in Fgf2−/− …

Sex Differences In Chondrocyte Maturation In The Mandibular Condyle From A Decreased Occlusal Loading Model, J. Chen, Takanori Sobue, Achint Utreja, Zana Kalajzic, Sunil Wadhwa, M. Xu

UCHC Articles - Research

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) predominantly afflict women of childbearing age. Defects in mechanical loading-induced temporomandibular joint (TMJ) remodeling are believed to be a major etiological factor in the development of TMD. The goal of this study was to determine if there are sex differences in CD-1 and C57BL/6 mice exposed to a decreased occlusal loading TMJ remodeling model. Male and female CD-1 and C57BL/6 mice, 21 days old, were each divided into two groups. They were fed either a normal pellet diet (normal loading) or a soft diet and had their incisors trimmed out of occlusion (decreased occlusal loading) for …

Transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) is a non-invasive form of brain stimulation applied via a weak electrical current passed between electrodes on the scalp. In recent studies, TDCS has been shown to improve learning when applied to the prefrontal cortex (e.g., Kincses et al. in Neuropsychologia 42:113–117, 2003; Clark et al. Neuroimage in 2010). The present study examined the effects of TDCS delivered at the beginning of training (novice) or after an hour of training (experienced) on participants’ ability to detect cues indicative of covert threats. Participants completed two 1-h training sessions. During the first 30 min of each training …

Representation Of Race In Children's Picture Books And How Students Respond To Them, Emily Conley

Education Masters

This study examined how race is represented in children's picture bokos and how students reacted to those representations. Research was conducted in a child care center. Data was collected through field observations, interviews, questionnaires, and audio recordings. The findings showed that the students are familiar with multicultural texts and are able to point out differences among characters and cultures. However, the students did not analyze the text from a critical standpoint. In order for students to use critical literacy, educators must understand it and incorporate it into their classrooms.

Of Ice And Men: Chilling Leadership Tales Of Four Great Explorers, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Following a brief pause after the Age of Exploration, the desire of human beings to reach every corner of their earth, however remote, was revived when expeditions to the two Polar Regions began in the 19th century. Participants of such harsh expeditions might have been carrying on the mantle of adventure or seeking fame, but they also provide fine examples for some very important lessons, said author Ragnar Kvam.

Total Body Integration: A Phenomenological Heuristic Study, Deva M. Connett Aug 2011

Total Body Integration: A Phenomenological Heuristic Study, Deva M. Connett

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this research was to study the experience of a novice dance/movement therapist’s exploration and re-patterning of the six developmental patterns of total body connectivity and integration, as outlined by Peggy Hackney, and to determine the impact they have on daily life. Literature reviewed describes the evolution of the patterns of connectivity as a holistic approach to changing maladaptive movement patterns and begins to suggest how they can be an effective tool in dance/movement therapy due to research supporting the mind-body connection, systems theory, and embodiment theories. Phenomenological and heuristic research methodologies were applied in the research design, …

A STUDY OF OZONE AT RAILROAD VALLEY, NV and TRINIDAD HEAD, CA

Ozone (Oᴣ) is a form of oxygen that protects the planet Earth from deadly ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun; without this triatomic molecule high in the atmosphere, life processes on the planet would be impossible. Ozone is an air pollutant and toxic in the lowest part of the atmosphere, and inhaling it could cause permanent damage to animals’ respiratory system. Long term exposure to high concentration of ozone has been linked with the development of asthma in children. Because of its complicated role in our atmosphere, scientists …

Navigating Socio-Spatial Difference, Constructing Counter-Space: Insights From Transnational Feminist Praxis, Sarah E. Dempsey, Patricia S. Parker, Kathleen J. Krone Aug 2011

Navigating Socio-Spatial Difference, Constructing Counter-Space: Insights From Transnational Feminist Praxis, Sarah E. Dempsey, Patricia S. Parker, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

In recent years, feminist activists have increasingly transnationalized their struggle against local forms of oppression. Our study explores the contentious nature of feminist transnationalism, asking how transnational feminist networks (TFNs) navigate socio-spatial inequalities within their own practices and as a wider social movement. We argue that: (1) TFNs make socio-spatial differences meaningful in part through their constructions of regional, international, and trans-local imaginaries; and (2) TFNs construct resistant feminist counter-spaces through dialogue and strategies aimed at destabilizing dominant structures. Our findings highlight the central role of spatial praxis within transnational feminism.
