Factors Associated With Obesity Treatment Adherence In Mexican-American Women, Julia Austin
Factors Associated With Obesity Treatment Adherence In Mexican-American Women, Julia Austin
Psychology ETDs
The current study examined environmental and socio-cultural factors postulated to predict adherence to a standard weight management program in Mexican-American women. In addition, the study gathered preliminary data on the effectiveness of the program with the study sample. One-hundred overweight or obese Mexican-American women in the Albuquerque area completed a pre-treatment intake and were enrolled in the group-based treatment. Of the 100 women who enrolled, 82 attended at least one treatment session. In terms of the predictors of treatment adherence, income was found to positively predict attendance in multivariate analyses. In addition, neighborhood satisfaction positively predicted reported walking goals completed, …
Extreme Variation In The Sagittal Crest Of Tapirus Polkensis (Mammalia Perissodactyla) At The Gray Fossil Site Northeastern Tn., Aaron Randall Abernethy
Extreme Variation In The Sagittal Crest Of Tapirus Polkensis (Mammalia Perissodactyla) At The Gray Fossil Site Northeastern Tn., Aaron Randall Abernethy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The preservation and quantity of fossil tapirs (Tapirus polkensis) from the Gray Fossil Site in northeastern Tennessee provides a unique opportunity for comparison and analysis of skeletal characters. Intraspecifically, modern tapirs show little to no variation in the morphology of the sagittal crest. However, several different morphologies exist within the sample at Gray. No osteological evidence of sexual dimorphism exists for tapirs, and no correlation between crest shape and sex was observed. Several juveniles display well defined crests, while some adults have only minor thickening of the temporal ridges; therefore, no distinct correlation between age and crest state …
Separation, Identification, And Quantification Of Low Molecular Weight Nitrogen Containing Compounds In Fish Byproducts, Jonathan Nigg
Separation, Identification, And Quantification Of Low Molecular Weight Nitrogen Containing Compounds In Fish Byproducts, Jonathan Nigg
Chemistry and Biochemistry
There is interest by the fish processing industry in the identification and eventual extraction of higher valued low molecular weight nitrogen compounds from fish byproducts such as stickwater, hydrolysates, fish tissues, and other byproducts. A hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) method was developed for the separation and quantification of amino acids, small nitrogenous acids and bases, as well as, other nitrogen containing metabolites. The HILIC method developed is a robust and non-derivatizing method for the analyses of aqueous compounds found in freeze dried red salmon whole fish and red salmon byproducts (pretreated stickwater, post-treated stickwater, and fishmeal). Triplicate samples of …

A Conserved Tissue-Specific Homeodomain-Less Isoform Of Meis1 Is Downregulated In Colorectal Cancer., Richard C Crist, Jacquelyn J Roth, Scott A Waldman, Arthur M Buchberg
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in developed nations and is the result of both environmental and genetic factors. Many of the genetic lesions observed in colorectal cancer alter expression of homeobox genes, which encode homeodomain transcription factors. The MEIS1 homeobox gene is known to be involved in several hematological malignancies and solid tumors and recent evidence suggests that expression of the MEIS1 transcript is altered in colorectal cancer. Despite this potential connection, little is known about the role of the gene in the intestines. We probed murine gastrointestinal tissue samples with an N-terminal Meis1 antibody, revealing …
Carbon And Nitrogen Assimilation In The Clams Nuculana Radiata And Macoma Moesta From The Bering Sea, Jared Weems
Carbon And Nitrogen Assimilation In The Clams Nuculana Radiata And Macoma Moesta From The Bering Sea, Jared Weems
Marine Biology
The predicted climate-induced reduction in sea ice presence in the Bering Sea could impact benthic trophic interactions; however, species-specific consumer dependence on ice algal production is largely unknown. My objective was to track feeding in the benthic clams, Nuculana radiata and Macoma moesta, using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Nuculana radiata had slow isotopic assimilation rates, with lipids taking up isotope markers fastest and muscle tissue the slowest. Lipids may thus be particularly suitable to track the immediate ingestion of sea ice algal export in benthic consumers. When isotopically enriched food was added to natural sediment cores, N. radiata assimilated …

Phylogeography And Population Genetics Of A Beringian Endemic: Dallia (Esociformes: Teleostei), Matthew A. Campbell
Phylogeography And Population Genetics Of A Beringian Endemic: Dallia (Esociformes: Teleostei), Matthew A. Campbell
Biological Sciences
In this thesis I examine the population genetics of an endemic Beringian freshwater fish genus, Dallia (blackfish). The current distribution of blackfish was heavily influenced by paleoclimatic instability during the Pleistocene. Beringian paleoclimatic changes during the Pleistocene included the fluctuating growth and decline of glaciers and an overall decrease in temperature and increased aridity in areas not adjacent to the Bering Sea. Pleistocene glacial advances resulted in the cyclical emergence of the Bering land bridge. The effects of paleoclimatic instability on blackfish distribution and abundance can be inferred through the distribution of genetic variation across the Beringian landscape. I address …
Genetic And Phenotypic Divergence Within And Between Cinnamon Teal (Anas Cyanoptera) And Blue-Winged Teal (A. Discors), Robert E. Wilson
Genetic And Phenotypic Divergence Within And Between Cinnamon Teal (Anas Cyanoptera) And Blue-Winged Teal (A. Discors), Robert E. Wilson
Biological Sciences
Spatial heterogeneity in selection pressures can lead to extensive morphological variation and differences at functional genes between populations across a species' range without corresponding genetic variation at neutral loci. Divergent selection among populations may thus lead to intraspecific variation and in many cases speciation. Phenotypic and genetic structure within and between Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) and the closely related Blue-winged Teal (A. discors) was assessed using body size measurements and neutral genetic markers in conjunction with a functional locus, hemoglobin. Cinnamon Teal are composed of five subspecies corresponding to distinct ecogeographic regions in North and South America. Subspecies and geographic …
An Exploration And Reconsideration Of Normal Body Temperature In Healthy Adults, Rebecca Mayo
An Exploration And Reconsideration Of Normal Body Temperature In Healthy Adults, Rebecca Mayo
Nursing ETDs
The human body temperature generally considered normal by medical professionals and the lay public and believed to be an important referent in diagnosing illness and determining its severity is 98.60 Fahrenheit (F). The initial work establishing 98.60 F published over 140 years ago may be flawed; and, even if correct, may not reflect the present normal body temperature. To investigate mean body temperature in adults ages 21-100 who regarded themselves as 'well,' an observational descriptive study was undertaken to measure body temperature using two commonly used measurement methods, oral and tympanic. 1000 adults comprised the non probability non randomized sample …

A Morphological And Genetic Review Of The Pardosa Groenlandica Species Complex (Araneae: Lycosidae), Jozef Slowik
Biological Sciences
The Pardosa groenlandica species complex comprises seven recognized species, P. groenlandica (Thorell 1872), P. dromaea (Thorell 1877), P. tristis (Thorell 1877), P. prosaica Chamberlin and Ivie 1947, P. bucklei Kronestedt 1975, P. albomaculata Emerton 1885, and P. lowriei Kronestedt 1975. These species have overlapping distributions, creating sympatric occurrences with at least one other member of the complex. They can be found in Greenland, throughout Canada, and occur in the United States from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific coast, through Alaska, and as far as eastern Siberia. These species' genitalia, which bear the primary diagnostic characters, are very similar and …
A Comparative Analysis Of Fish And Wildlife Enforcement In Alaska From The Passage Of The 1902 Alaska Game Law To 2011, Kenneth J. Woldstad
A Comparative Analysis Of Fish And Wildlife Enforcement In Alaska From The Passage Of The 1902 Alaska Game Law To 2011, Kenneth J. Woldstad
Arctic and Northern Studies
This study examines the institutional evolution of wildlife enforcement in the context of Alaskan history and politics from 1902 to the present. Balancing competing demands for expertise in fish and wildlife matters on one hand, with a technical knowledge of law enforcement on the other, has long been the central institutional challenge facing those protecting Alaska's living resources. Following enactment of the first Alaska Game Law in 1902, responsibility for enforcement was initially left to already over-burdened law enforcement officials, with ultimate authority remaining under the U.S. Agriculture Department. Passage of the 1925 "Alaska Game Law" and establishment of the …
Manipulating Paradigm And Attention Via A Mindfulness Meditation Training Program Improves P300-Based Bci., Daniel Ryan Berry
Manipulating Paradigm And Attention Via A Mindfulness Meditation Training Program Improves P300-Based Bci., Daniel Ryan Berry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To date, only one study has situationally bolstered attentional resources in an effort to improve P300-BCI performance. The current study implements a 4-week Mindfulness Meditation Training Program (MMTP) as a nonmedicinal means to increase concentrative attention and to reduce lapses of attention; MMTP is expected to improve P300-BCI performance by enhancing attentional resources and reducing distractibility. A second aim is to test the efficacy of the checkerboard paradigm (CBP) against the standard row-column paradigm (RCP). Online results show that MMTP had greater accuracies than CTRL and that CBP outperformed the RCP. MMTP participants provided greater amplitude positive target responses, but …

Quality Assessment Of Weathervane Scallop (Patinopecten Caurinus) And Purple-Hinge Rock Scallop (Crassadoma Gigantea) From Alaska, Kathryn A. Brenner
Fisheries
In Alaska, the Pacific weathervane scallop (Patinopecten caurinus) is the only species commercially harvested. In the Eastern Gulf of Alaska, harvesters report occurrences of poor quality and difficult to market scallops from some fishing areas, designating the product 'weak meat' scallops. The purple-hinge rock scallop (PHRS, Crassadoma gigantea), has aquaculture potential. A recent grow-out study in Alaska was promising, verifying this potential. Our goal was to assess the quality of Alaskan scallops using physical and chemical analyses to understand the perceived differences in meat quality. 'Weak meat' (WS) and standard quality (SS) whole weathervane scallops from Yakutat, two batches of …
Growth Physiology Of Juvenile Red King Crab, Paralithodes Camtschaticus, In Alaska, Miranda J. Westphal
Growth Physiology Of Juvenile Red King Crab, Paralithodes Camtschaticus, In Alaska, Miranda J. Westphal
Fisheries
Lack of recovery, following collapse of the Alaskan red king crab, Paralithodes camtschaticus, fishery, has prompted research directed towards rehabilitating the species. To better inform rehabilitation efforts aimed at increasing survival and growth of P. camtschaticus in their first year of life, I compared individual growth of hatchery-raised and wild-caught juvenile crabs in the laboratory and then compared both sets of laboratory individuals with cohorts from the field. To understand molt cycles, hemolymph was collected from age-0 and age-3 crabs to quantify circulating molting hormones (ecdysteroids) and the duration of premolt. Size, growth increment, molt interval, and cumulative molt interval …
Fishing For Pollock In A Sea Of Change: A History And Analysis Of The Bering Sea Pollock Fishery, James Strong
Fishing For Pollock In A Sea Of Change: A History And Analysis Of The Bering Sea Pollock Fishery, James Strong
Fisheries
The development and evolution of the eastern Bering Sea fishery for walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) is retraced, its current economic and institutional structure is modeled, and the resiliency of that structure to substantive changes in pollock biomass and fuel costs is explored. Small variations in exvessel prices, total allowable catches, or allocation of catches between seasons and among industry sectors can lead to large changes to first wholesale revenues. Similarly, changes in fuel prices, changes in technology, changes in regulation, and changes in the spatial distribution of catches can lead to changes in harvesting or processing costs. Together, these changes …
The Use Of Art Therapy In A Patient With Chronic Schizophrenia, Robert Morrow, Md
The Use Of Art Therapy In A Patient With Chronic Schizophrenia, Robert Morrow, Md
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
The artistic drawings of psychiatric patients have been of increasing interest to mental health professionals over the last hundred years. In the 1870's Simon speculated on the relationship between the art of psychotics and their illnesses (1) . Freud and Jung made observations about the symbolism of art work. By the 1940's Naumberg developed a system of art therapy relying heavily on psychoanalytic theory that is now a therapeutic discipline in its own right (2).
In the inpatient milieu art therapy is commonly offered in conjunction with other therapies that make up the inpatient experience. The art therapist often shares …

Bats Of The Western Indian Ocean Islands, John O'Brien
Bats Of The Western Indian Ocean Islands, John O'Brien
KIP Articles
The natural colonisation of many remote oceanic islands by bats, including those of the western Indian Ocean, has been facilitated by their unique capability among mammals for powered flight. In the western Indian Ocean region, only the Malagasy islands of Madagascar and the Comoros archipelago have been naturally colonised by non-volant mammals. Despite their greater potential for inter-island dispersal, and thus gene transfer, endemicity of Chiroptera in the western Indian Ocean islands is high. Given their vulnerability to stochastic and anthropogenic disturbances, greater focus needs to be placed on investigating the demographic and ecological history of bats on Western Indian …

Estimating The Timing Of Early Eukaryotic Diversification With Multigene Molecular Clocks, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Andrew H. Knoll, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Although macroscopic plants, animals, and fungi are the most familiar eukaryotes, the bulk of eukaryotic diversity is microbial. Elucidating the timing of diversification among the more than 70 lineages is key to understanding the evolution of eukaryotes. Here, we use taxon-rich multigene data combined with diverse fossils and a relaxed molecular clock framework to estimate the timing of the last common ancestor of extant eukaryotes and the divergence of major clades. Overall, these analyses suggest that the last common ancestor lived between 1866 and 1679 Ma, consistent with the earliest microfossils interpreted with confidence as eukaryotic. During this interval, the …

Plant-feeding insects have been recently found to use microbes to manipulate host plant physiology and morphology. Gall midges are one of the largest groups of insects that manipulate host plants extensively. Hessian fly (HF, Mayetiola destructor) is an important pest of wheat and a model system for studying gall midges. To examine the role of bacteria in parasitism, a systematic analysis of bacteria associated with HF was performed for the first time. Diverse bacteria were found in different developmental HF stages. Fluorescent in situhybridization detected a bacteriocyte-like structure in developing eggs. Bacterial DNA was also detected in eggs …
