Physiological Trade-Offs In Self-Maintenance: Plumage Molt And Stress Physiology In Birds, Jamie M. Cornelius, Nicole Perfito, Richard Zann, Creagh W. Breuner, Thomas P. Hahn
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Trade-offs between self-maintenance processes can affect life-history evolution. Integument replacement and the stress response both promote self-maintenance and affect survival in vertebrates. Relationships between the two processes have been studied most extensively in birds, where hormonal stress suppression is down regulated during molt in seasonal species, suggesting a resource-based trade-off between the two processes. The only species found to differ are the rock dove and Eurasian tree sparrow, at least one of which performs a very slow molt that may reduce resource demands during feather growth, permitting investment in the stress response. To test for the presence of a molt–stress …

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter
Green beans are thought to have originated in Peru and spread through South and Central America by Indian tribes. Spanish explorers introduced them into Europe in the 16th century. Surveys indicate that 60% of commercially grown green beans are produced in the United States. Particularly, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Wisconsin produce the greatest amount of green beans in the United States.

Lectin-Functionalized Carboxymethylated Kappa-Carrageenan Microparticles For Oral Insulin Delivery, Kok Hoong Leong
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
We hypothesized that pH-responsive carboxymethylated kappa-carrageenan microparticles could protect entrapped oral insulin from acidic and proteolytic degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to prepare and characterize insulin entrapped in lectin-functionalized carboxymethylated kappa-carrageenan microparticles and to evaluate their therapeutic efficacy in vitro and in vivo. The encapsulation of insulin was performed using an ionic gelation technique and was optimized to give an encapsulation efficiency of 94.2 ± 2.6% and a drug-loading capacity of 13.5 ± 0.4%. The microparticles were further surface-lectin-functionalized for improved intestinal mucoadhesiveness. The oral administration of insulin entrapped in the microparticles led …
Quantum Diffusion-Limited Aggregation, David Bradley Johnson
Quantum Diffusion-Limited Aggregation, David Bradley Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Though classical random walks have been studied for many years, research concerning their quantum analogues, quantum random walks, has only come about recently. Numerous simulations of both types of walks have been run and analyzed, and are generally well-understood. Research pertaining to one of the more important properties of classical random walks, namely, their ability to build fractal structures in diffusion-limited aggregation, has been particularly noteworthy. However, nobody has yet pursued this avenue of research in the realm of quantum random walks. The study of random walks and the structures they build has various applications in materials science. Since all …

Dynamic Characterization Of The Ikk:Κbα:Nfκb Negative Feedback Loop Using Real-Time Bioluminescence Imaging, Britney Moss
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The transcription factor NF-κB is a pivotal regulator of mammalian cell function, modulating genes implicated in cellular stress responses, proliferation, differentiation, cell survival and apoptosis, as well as immune and inflammatory responses. Improper regulation of NF-κB signaling has been implicated in a myriad of human pathological disorders, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, chronic inflammation, and various cancers. A key regulatory node within canonical NF-κB signaling is the IKK:NF-κB: IκBα negative feedback loop that plays a major role in regulating the strength and duration of NF-κB transcriptional activity. We have developed and characterized an unique bioluminescent reporter (κB5àIκBα-FLuc) …

A Preliminary Report On Disordered Speech With Deep Brain Stimulation In Individuals With Parkinson's Disease, Christopher Dromey, Suzy Bjarnason
Faculty Publications
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has proven effective in treating the major motor symptoms of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). The aim of this study was to learn which laryngeal and articulatory acoustic features changed in patients who were reported to have worse speech with stimulation. Six volunteers with PD who had bilateral STN electrodes were recorded with DBS turned on or off. Perceptual ratings reflected poorer speech performance with DBS on. Acoustic measures of articulation (corner vowel formants, diphthong slopes, and a spirantization index) and phonation (perturbation, long-term average spectrum) as well as verbal fluency scores …

Intra-Operative Neural Response Telemetry And Acoustic Reflex Assessment Using An Advance-In-Stylet Technique And Modiolus-Hugging : A Prospective Cohort Study, Abdulrahman Hagr
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: The development of cochlear implant (CI) electrode arrays has focused on the use of a minimally invasive technique involving a modiolus-hugging placement of the electrode. The aim of this study was to evaluate the “advance-in-stylet” (AIS) technique compared to the advance-off-stylet (AOS) technique recommended for the current cochlear Nucleus® device. In the AIS technique, the stylet is not removed. We evaluated the electrical auditory thresholds measured when the stylet was removed (modiolus-hugging) compared to measurements taken with the stylet in place (lateral wall cochlea electrode placement). Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 30 consecutive patients received unilateral Nucleus Freedom® …

Background: Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is a severe chronic respiratory disease affecting horses worldwide, though mostly in the Northern hemisphere. Environmental as well as genetic factors strongly influence the course and prognosis of the disease. Research has been focused on characterization of immunologic factors contributing to inflammatory responses, on genetic linkage analysis, and, more recently, on proteomic analysis of airway secretions from affected horses. The goal of this study was to investigate the interactions between eight candidate genes previously identified in a genetic linkage study and proteins expressed in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected from healthy and RAO-affected horses. The …

The Enzyme Activities Of Opine And Lactate Dehydrogenases In The Gills, Mantle, Foot, And Adductor Of The Hard Clam Meretrix Lusoria, An-Chin Lee, Kuen-Tsung Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Alanopine dehydrogenase (ADH) and both ADH and strombine dehydrogenase (SDH) are respectively the major opine dehydrogenases in the gills and mantle of hard clam under normoxia. However, ADH, octopine dehydrogenase (ODH), and SDH are the predominant opine dehydrogenases in the foot and adductor of the hard clam under normoxia. After anoxic exposure, significant increases in the activities of opine dehydrogenases in the gills were observed for ADH as well as SDH and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). However, the activities of ADH and SDH in the mantle were not responsive to anoxic exposure. Activities of ADH, ODH, SDH, and LDH in the …

Shaken Baby Syndrome As A Form Of Abusive Head Trauma, Muna Al-Saadoon, Ibtisam B. Elnour, Anuradha
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a form of abuse that is characterised by brain injury. Because of the subtle and yet debilitating neurobehavioural impairment which ensues, SBS represents a diagnostic dilemma for attending clinicians. The situation is made worse by the young age of the affected child who may not be capable of explaining what happened. SBS has been reported in many parts of the world. To our knowledge, there is a dearth of literature on the topic from Arab/Islamic countries. This article attempts to shed light on the syndrome by reviewing information on the aetiology of SBS, as well …

The Abundance And Infection Status Of Anopheles Spp. Mosquitoes At Three Sites In Loudoun County, Northern Virginia, Priya Krishnan
Theses and Dissertations
Malaria is a re-emerging infectious disease with approximately half of the world's population at risk. In the US, since the 1950’s the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has been reporting between 1,000 and 1,500 cases of malaria every year. A majority of these cases were among US travellers and were attributed to Plasmodium falciparum. In August 2002, two cases of human malaria due to Plasmodium vivax were reported in Loudoun County, Northern Virginia. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that these cases were acquired locally. This was because of an absence of other risk factors such as international …

The evolution of the amniotic egg was one of the great evolutionary innovations in the history of life, freeing vertebrates from an obligatory connection to water and thus permitting the conquest of terrestrial environments1. Among amniotes, genome sequences are available for mammals2 and birds3–5, but not for non-avian reptiles. Here we report the genome sequence of the North American green anole lizard, Anolis carolinensis. We find that A. carolinensis microchromosomes are highly syntenic with chicken microchromosomes, yet do not exhibit the high GC and low repeat content that are characteristic of avian microchromosomes3. Also, A. carolinensis mobile elements are very …

Biology
In the postnatal vasculature, fully differentiated and quiescent vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a “contractile” phenotype are required for the normal regulation of vascular tone. The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily of growth factors (TGF-βs and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)) are potent inducers of contractile phenotype and mediate (i) induction of contractile genes, and (ii) inhibition of VSMC growth and migration. Transcription of contractile genes is positively regulated by a regulatory DNA element called a CArG box. The CArG box is activated by the binding of serum response factor and its coactivators, myocardin (Myocd) or Myocd-related transcription factors (MRTFs). …

The blind subterranean mole rat (Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies) is a model animal for survival under extreme environments due to its ability to live in underground habitats under severe hypoxic stress and darkness. Here we report the transcriptome sequencing of Spalax galili, a chromosomal type of S. ehrenbergi. cDNA pools from muscle and brain tissues isolated from animals exposed to hypoxic and normoxic conditions were sequenced using Sanger, GS FLX, and GS FLX Titanium technologies. Assembly of the sequences yielded over 51,000 isotigs with homology to ~12,000 mouse, rat or human genes. Based on these results, it was …

Maternal Investment By Yellowstone Pronghorn Following Winter Habitat Deterioration, Kerey K. Barnowe-Meyer, P. J. White, John A. Byers
Western North American Naturalist
Spring and summer–autumn nutrition are the prime determinants of reproductive investment in most largeherbivore populations, though winter severity is known to affect reproductive rates in some situations. To evaluate the effects of a long-term decline in winter habitat quality, a diet shift away from sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) during winter, and differential habitat selection during spring–autumn on pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) reproduction, we assessed female and fawn condition, maternal investment, and early fawn survival in migrant and nonmigrant portions of the Yellowstone pronghorn population in Montana and Wyoming during 1999–2001. Mean female mass at capture in late winter (46.81 …
Effects Of Habitat On Clutch Size Of Ornate Tree Lizards, Urosaurus Ornatus, Gregory Haenel
Effects Of Habitat On Clutch Size Of Ornate Tree Lizards, Urosaurus Ornatus, Gregory Haenel
Western North American Naturalist
Clutch size is an important determinant of female reproductive success in reptiles. Although female body size explains much variation in clutch size, other important factors include differences in food availability, predation risk, morphology, and demography. Ornate tree lizards, Urosaurus ornatus, display extensive variation in life history traits, including clutch size. Tree lizards primarily use 2 distinct habitat types—trees and rock surfaces—which influence both the performance and morphology of this species and may affect life history traits such as clutch size. As food availability, microclimate, and, potentially, predator escape probabilities differ between these 2 habitats, I predicted that tree- and rockdwelling …

A Reconnaissance Of Small Mammal Communities In Garland And Government Prairies, Arizona, Joseph L. Ganey, Carol L. Chambers
Western North American Naturalist
Small mammals play key ecological roles in grassland ecosystems, yet little is known regarding small mammal communities in large (>50 km2), high-elevation prairies embedded in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests in north central Arizona. To provide information on community composition and habitat relationships, we live-trapped small mammals on 6 transects in 2 prairies in 2008. We captured 78 individuals in 5501 trap occasions. Capture rates were low and varied widely among transects. Community composition was simple, with only 3 species of small mammals captured. In order of relative abundance, these species were deer mouse ( …
