Connecting Brain Research With Teaching Practice Among Middle School Teachers, Irene Sanders
Connecting Brain Research With Teaching Practice Among Middle School Teachers, Irene Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
The discipline of mind, brain, and education science is the merger of psychology, neuroscience, and education. Its focus is to address complex problems in education and provide evidence-based solutions. One facet of this mixed methods action research study expanded middle school teachers' knowledge of brain function and brain-based strategies through a five-part workshop series and created a ten session professional learning community. Participants selected strategies such as relaxation, working memory tasks, or taught students about their brains to increase academic achievement, and tracked two groups' progress. Strategy implementation was judged to be too time consuming except for relaxation exercises. Alternate …

Bringing Eyes Of Faith To Film: Using Popular Movies To Cultivate A Sacramental Imagination And Improve Media Literacy In Adolescents, Charles B. Gordon, Karen E. Eifler
Journal of Catholic Education
Adolescents are bombarded during most of their waking hours by images on various screens: computer, television, and film. As so-called digital natives, they are aware that these images are manufactured and manipulated to elicit certain responses. But while they acknowledge the artificiality of those images, they allow the same mediated messages virtually unfettered access to their hearts and minds with sad or even chilling results. Catholic educators and pastoral workers are charged with helping young people navigate the terrain created by popular media for at least two reasons: to nurture a more sophisticated approach to reading media, and to leverage …

Mithramycin A (MTM) and histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) are effective therapeutic agents for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. MTM is a FDA approved aureolic acid-type antibiotic that binds to GC-rich DNA sequences and interferes with Sp1 transcription factor binding to its target sites (GC box). HDACi, on the other hand, modulate the activity of class I and II histone deacetylases. They mediate their protective function, in part, by regulating the acetylation status of histones or transcription factors, including Sp1, and in turn chromatin accessibility to the transcriptional machinery. Because these two classes of structurally and functionally diverse compounds mediate similar therapeutic …

From Lakes To Plants: Spatial Assessment Of Vegetation Dynamics Along 52 Disappearing Lakes In The Boreal Forests Of Alaska From 1984-2009 In The Yukon Flats Wildlife Refuge, Steve Ewest
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
A spatial assessment of vegetation change along the areas of shrinking lakes was conducted in 2011. The analysis utilized Landsat TM/ETM imagery bands 3 and 4 to calculate NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) from 1984 to 2009 and applied cell and zonal statistics to measure the change as well as create an animation of the change. Also, three 30 meter bands and the zonal averages for the maximum values were assessed. The band in the 60-90 buffer bands has the greatest ratio amount of the maximum vegetation values when compared to the 0-30 meter and the 30-60 meter buffered bands. …
External Reforming Sofc Coupled With Biomass-To-Syngas Reactor, Amit Patel
External Reforming Sofc Coupled With Biomass-To-Syngas Reactor, Amit Patel
Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses
This thesis introduces a thermodynamic model of an external reforming SOFC coupled with a biomass-to-syngas reactor in order to calculate energy and power that can be extracted from the fuel. Some of this energy will be used for electrical work and some of this energy will be used to provide heat to the reactor to drive the endothermic reactions occurring throughout the process. We analyzed four different feedstocks for their fuel cell heat dissipation and fuel cell power characteristic: pure syngas, pure carbon-derived syngas, coal-derived syngas, and biomass-derived syngas. Pure syngas consists of only CO and H2 while the other …

Sacrilege In Dinétah: Native Encounters With Glen Canyon Dam, Sonia Dickey
Sacrilege In Dinétah: Native Encounters With Glen Canyon Dam, Sonia Dickey
History ETDs
This dissertation spotlights indigenous encounters with Glen Canyon Dam and places Native peoples, especially the Diné, at the center of the dam story. In doing so, it exposes the façade masquerading a less pleasant and creditable reality surrounding the dam than historians have conventionally offered. Considering traditional knowledge; relationships to homeland; pivotal moments in Navajo history, such as the Long Walk and the Bosque Redondo and the stock reduction of the 1930s and 1940s; as well as mid-century Navajo Tribal Council concerns, this study uncovers a multifaceted story of water and energy development in the Southwest. In this version, the …

The Expression Of T-Box (Tbx3) In The Bovine Mammary Gland, Maria L. Procopio Ms.
The Expression Of T-Box (Tbx3) In The Bovine Mammary Gland, Maria L. Procopio Ms.
Master's Theses
Development of the bovine mammary gland is a complex process that is regulated by several hormones, growth factors and transcription factors including but not limited to growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and T-box (Tbx)2 and 3. Tbx2 and Tbx3 are transcription factors required for mammary gland development in humans and known to regulate cell cycle. In addition, there is recent evidence that GH increases expression of Tbx3 in osteoblasts independent of IGF-I. Based on these findings, we hypothesized GH and IGF-I will increase Tbx2 and Tbx3 expression in bovine mammary epithelial cells (MEC), the cell responsible for milk …
Behavioral And Neurochemical Characterization Of The Effects Of The Novel Adenosine Antogonist Msx-4, Jessica L. Santerre
Behavioral And Neurochemical Characterization Of The Effects Of The Novel Adenosine Antogonist Msx-4, Jessica L. Santerre
Master's Theses
Organisms frequently make effort-related decisions based upon assessments of motivational value and response costs. Dopamine (DA) and DA receptors (DA-Rs), particularly in nucleus accumbens (NAc), are known to regulate such effort-related choice behavior processes. For instance, DA-R antagonists as well as NAc DA depletion can decrease choice behavior. Moreover, previous studies have shown that systemic administration of adenosine A2A antagonists reverses the behavioral effects of DA-R D2 antagonists in rats responding on the concurrent choice task. MSX-3, a selective adenosine A2A antagonist, is a prodrug of MSX-2 with better water solubility. MSX-3 produces a substantial dose-related reversal of …

Getting Past Powerpoint, James Hayes-Bohanan, Eric Lepage
EdTech Day
For an entire generation, integrating technology into the classroom has very often meant using PowerPoint to enhance—and even to organize—lectures. More advanced integration of technology often means teaching students to prepare their own PowerPoint presentations.
Dr. James Hayes-Bohanan became acquainted with PowerPoint when working as an in-house software trainer as the application was first coming to market. As a new professor in the ensuing years, he used many of PowerPoint’s bells and whistles—sometimes literally—in his own teaching and helped both middle-school and college students to use the software.
It is from this deep involvement with PowerPoint that he eventually came …

Sirt1 is an NAD(+)-dependent deacetylase that extends lifespan in lower organisms and improves metabolism and delays the onset of age-related diseases in mammals. Here we show that SRT1720, a synthetic compound that was identified for its ability to activate Sirt1 in vitro, extends both mean and maximum lifespan of adult mice fed a high-fat diet. This lifespan extension is accompanied by health benefits including reduced liver steatosis, increased insulin sensitivity, enhanced locomotor activity and normalization of gene expression profiles and markers of inflammation and apoptosis, all in the absence of any observable toxicity. Using a conditional SIRT1 knockout mouse and …

Despite extensive investigations, restenosis, which is characterized primarily by neointima formation, remains an unsolved clinical problem after vascular interventions. A recent study has shown that CD40 signaling through TNF receptor associated factor 6 (TRAF6) plays a key role in neointima formation after carotid artery injury; however, underlying mechanisms are not clearly elucidated. Because neointima formation may vary significantly depending on the type of injury, we first assessed the effect of CD40 deficiency on neointima formation in 2 injury models, carotid artery ligation and femoral artery denudation injury. Compared with wild-type mice, CD40 deficiency significantly reduced neointima formation and lumen stenosis …
Language Typology And Sentence Frame Effects On Motion Verb Interpretation In Grade Schoolers, Emma C. Kelty
Language Typology And Sentence Frame Effects On Motion Verb Interpretation In Grade Schoolers, Emma C. Kelty
Master's Theses
Most English descriptions of motion events express manner in the main verb and path in a prepositional phrase, as in “She skips out of the house”. However, the same event can be described differently if a different syntactic frame is used: “She exits the house”. While young children have been found to interpret novel motion verbs according to the syntactic frame information, adults have been found to rely somewhat more on the overall language pattern, or typology (Hohenstein et al., 2004; Naigles & Terrazas, 1998). Grade schoolers have not been examined in this paradigm, and their linguistic abilities suggest that …

Age-Related Deficits In Spatial Memory And Hippocampal Spines In Virgin, Female Fischer 344 Rats, Victoria N. Luine, Maureen E. Wallace, Maya Frankfurt
Publications and Research
Effects of aging on memory and brain morphology were examined in aged, 21-month-old, and young, 4-month-old, Fischer 344 female rats. Spatial memory was assessed using the object placement task, and dendritic spine density was determined on pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus following Golgi impregnation. Consistent with previous studies, aged females showed poorer object placement performance than young subjects. Young subjects significantly discriminated the location of objects with a 1.5-hour intertrial delay while aged subjects did not. Spine density of basal dendrites on CA1 pyramidal cells was 16% lower in the aged subjects as compared to the young subjects. No differences …

A Neurocomputational Model Of Stimulus-Specific Adaptation To Oddball And Markov Sequences., Robert Mill, Martin Coath, Thomas Wennekers, Susan L. Denham
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) occurs when the spike rate of a neuron decreases with repetitions of the same stimulus, but recovers when a different stimulus is presented. It has been suggested that SSA in single auditory neurons may provide information to change detection mechanisms evident at other scales (e.g., mismatch negativity in the event related potential), and participate in the control of attention and the formation of auditory streams. This article presents a spiking-neuron model that accounts for SSA in terms of the convergence of depressing synapses that convey feature-specific inputs. The model is anatomically plausible, comprising just a few homogeneously …

WE COMPARED LUNG DELIVERY METHODS OF RECOMBINANT ADENOVIRUS (RAD): (1) rAd suspended in saline, (2) rAd suspended in saline followed by a pulse-chase of a perfluorochemical (PFC) liquid mixture, and (3) a PFC-rAd suspension. Cell uptake, distribution, and temporal expression of rAd were examined using A549 cells, a murine model using luciferase bioluminescence, and histological analyses. Relative to saline, a 4X increase in transduction efficiency was observed in A549 cells exposed to PFC-rAd for 2-4 h. rAd transgene expression was improved in alveolar epithelial cells, and the level and distribution of luciferase expression when delivered in PFC-rAd suspensions consistently peaked …

The ‘‘aha’’ moment or the sudden arrival of the solution to a problem is a common human experience. Spontaneous problem solving without evident trial and error behavior in humans and other animals has been referred to as insight. Surprisingly, elephants, thought to be highly intelligent, have failed to exhibit insightful problem solving in previous cognitive studies. We tested whether three Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) would use sticks or other objects to obtain food items placed out-of-reach and overhead. Without prior trial and error behavior, a 7-year-old male Asian elephant showed spontaneous problem solving by moving a large plastic cube, on …

Bulimia As A Masturbatory Equivalent, Eric Levin, Md
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
Introduction
In the last few years much has been written about those who binge-eat and then purge. These people, most of whom are women, resort to extreme measures to avoid gaining weight while not foregoing the gratification of eating.
Most recent papers on this disorder have focused upon description, classification, and the search for neurobiological causality . Little has been presented on the psychodynamics of bulimia that would help us understand the symbolic significance of this disorder. The following case presentation illustrates how bulimia may present as a neurotic symptom, and as such may be overdetermined, yet representative of a …

The Use Of Light In The Treatment Of Depression, Mark D. Miller, Md
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
INTRODUCTION
Light has recently been reported to be a useful treatment in affective illness (1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6). What type of patients respond to this type of treatment ? What is the theoretical mechanism of action of light therapy and what are the implications of this research for the existing theories of affective illness? This review will seek answers to these questions by summarizing the recently reported studies of the effects of light on depression , by reviewing the pertinent contributions from neuroanatomy, endocrinology and circadian rhythm physiology, and, finally, by suggesting some points of integration of these recent …
