A Model Of Intracellular Θ Phase Precession Dependent On Intrinsic Subthreshold Membrane Currents., L Stan Leung
A Model Of Intracellular Θ Phase Precession Dependent On Intrinsic Subthreshold Membrane Currents., L Stan Leung
Physiology and Pharmacology Publications
A hippocampal place cell fires at an increasingly earlier phase in relation to the extracellular theta rhythm as a rodent moves through the place field. The present report presents a compartment model of a CA1 pyramidal cell that explains the increase in amplitude and the phase precession of intracellular theta oscillations, with the assumption that the cell receives an asymmetric ramp depolarization (<10 >mV) in the place field and rhythmic inhibitory and/or excitatory synaptic driving. Intracellular subthreshold membrane potential oscillations (MPOs) increase in amplitude and frequency, and show phase precession within the place field. Theta phase precession and MPO power …10>

Intraspecific Aflatoxin Inhibition In Aspergillus Flavus Is Thigmoregulated, Independent Of Vegetative Compatibility Group And Is Strain Dependent, Changwei Huang, Archana Jha, Rebecca Sweany, Catherine Derobertis, Kenneth E. Damann
Faculty Publications
Biological control of preharvest aflatoxin contamination by atoxigenic stains of Aspergillus flavus has been demonstrated in several crops. The assumption is that some form of competition suppresses the fungus's ability to infect or produce aflatoxin when challenged. Intraspecific aflatoxin inhibition was demonstrated by others. This work investigates the mechanistic basis of that phenomenon. A toxigenic and atoxigenic isolate of A. flavus which exhibited intraspecific aflatoxin inhibition when grown together in suspended disc culture were not inhibited when grown in a filter insert-plate well system separated by a.4 or 3 μm membrane. Toxigenic and atoxigenic conidial mixtures (50:50) placed on both …

Stromatolitic Knobs In Storrs Lake, San Salvador, Bahamas: Insights Into Organomineralization, Alexandre J. Fowler
Stromatolitic Knobs In Storrs Lake, San Salvador, Bahamas: Insights Into Organomineralization, Alexandre J. Fowler
Master's Theses
Storrs Lake, a hypersaline lake on the east coast of San Salvador Island, Bahamas, contains well-developed microbial mats, some of which have developed calcified structures called microbialites. Many of these microbialites are laminated, and therefore classified as stromatolites. This study focuses on small stromatolitic knobs located in the southern portion of Storrs lake, which are still actively forming, to gain insights into the early stages of stromatolite formation. These knobs appear to be forming as the result of in situ micritic precipitation mediated by both photosynthetic and heterotrophic microbial metabolisms. By comparing these small stromatolitic knobs to larger stromatolitic heads …

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) are critical for the development of the nervous system. We previously discovered that FGF2 and EGF had opposite effects on motor neuron differentiation from human fetal neural stem cells (hNSCs), but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that FGF2 and EGF differentially affect the temporal patterns of Akt and glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) activation. High levels of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt activation accompanied with GSK3β inactivation result in reduction of the motor neuron transcription factor HB9. Inhibition of PI3K/Akt by chemical inhibitors or RNA interference or overexpression of …

Abstract Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, 1830 has served as a model insect for over a century. Sequencing of the 11 additional Drosophila Fallen, 1823 species marks substantial progress in comparative genomics of this genus. By comparison, practically nothing is known about the genome size or genome sequences of parasitic wasps of Drosophila. Here, we present the first comparative analysis of genome size and karyotype structures of Drosophila parasitoids of the Leptopilina Förster, 1869 and Ganaspis Förster, 1869 species. The gametic genome size of Ganaspis xanthopoda (Ashmead, 1896) is larger than those of the three Leptopilina species studied. The genome sizes of …

Biomimicry: Integration Of Dynamic Thermal Regulation In Human Habitation, Krishna Kasi
Biomimicry: Integration Of Dynamic Thermal Regulation In Human Habitation, Krishna Kasi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how naturecould inform thermal regulation in buildings, and determineits architectural implications. Student housing, a major consumerof energy due to its density, was selected as a projectscenario. The temperate climate of the project locationposed additional challenges with its seasonal variation fromhot-humid summers to cold winters. Nature recommends adynamic response to a dynamic problem. Termite mounds became the inspiration because oftheir exceptional climate control. Dynamic response of thesystems came from two different types of termite mounds, one closed and another open. Combining the two resultedin dealing with multiple mechanisms. These multiple mechanisms enriched the buildingwith …

Cerebral Lateralization Determines Hand Preferences In Australian Parrots, Culum Brown, Maria Magat
Sentience Collection
Individual preference for the use of one limb over the other to explore the environment or manipulate objects is common trait among vertebrates. Here, we explore the hypothesis that limb preference is determined by the engagement of a particular cerebral hemisphere to analyse certain stimuli. We recorded the eye and foot preferences of 322 individuals from 16 species of Australian parrots while investigating potential food items. Across all species, eye preferences explained 99 per cent of the variation in foot use in Australian parrots. The vast majority of species showed significant relationships between eye and foot preferences at the population …

Mixed Messages: Assessing Communication In Architectural Education And Practice, Amanda Weko
Mixed Messages: Assessing Communication In Architectural Education And Practice, Amanda Weko
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of communication in both the academic and professional architecture communities. The author addressed (a) whether profession-specific communication skills are part of any National Architectural Accrediting Board-accredited U.S. undergraduate architecture program; (b) how architectural educators feel about communication studies; and (c) how registered architects feel about communication skills in their practice. Research findings pointed to a dichotomy in academic and professional perceptions of the importance of communication training in undergraduate architecture education. While only 13.8 percent of academic programs require communication coursework directly related to architectural practice, 94 percent of architects surveyed …

Abstract Background: Resistance to anoikis, which is defined as apoptosis induced by loss of integrin-mediated cell attachment to the extracellular matrix, is a determinant of tumor progression and metastasis. We have previously identified the mitochondrial Bit1 (Bcl-2 inhibitor of transcription) protein as a novel anoikis effector whose apoptotic function is independent from caspases and is uniquely controlled by integrins. In this report, we examined the possibility that Bit1 is suppressed during tumor progression and that Bit1 downregulation may play a role in tumor metastasis. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using a human breast tumor tissue array, we found that Bit1 expression is suppressed …

Potential Applications Of Curcumin And Its Novel Synthetic Analogs And Nanotechnology-Based Formulations In Cancer Prevention And Therapy., Murielle Mimeault, Surinder K. Batra
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Curcumin has attracted great attention in the therapeutic arsenal in clinical oncology due to its chemopreventive, antitumoral, radiosensibilizing and chemosensibilizing activities against various types of aggressive and recurrent cancers. These malignancies include leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, brain cancer, melanoma and skin, lung, prostate, breast, ovarian, liver, gastrointestinal, pancreatic and colorectal epithelial cancers. Curcumin mediates its anti-proliferative, anti-invasive and apoptotic effects on cancer cells, including cancer stem/progenitor cells and their progenies, through multiple molecular mechanisms. The oncogenic pathways inhibited by curcumin encompass the members of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR and erbB2), sonic hedgehog (SHH)/GLIs and Wnt/β-catenin and downstream signaling elements …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
The MUC4 mucin is a high molecular weight, membrane-bound, and highly glycosylated protein. It is a multi-domain protein that is putatively cleaved into a large mucin-like subunit (MUC4α) and a C-terminal growth-factor like subunit (MUC4β). MUC4 plays critical roles in physiological and pathological conditions and is aberrantly overexpressed in several cancers, including those of the pancreas, cervix, breast and lung. It is also a potential biomarker for the diagnosis, prognosis and progression of several malignancies. Further, MUC4 plays diverse functional roles in cancer initiation and progression as evident from its involvement in oncogenic transformation, proliferation, inhibition of apoptosis, motility and …

Secret Prayer
ATS Digital Resources
"OUR Saviour, in language the most emphatic, has enjoined upon us this duty: "Enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." How distinct is this command! And yet it is to be feared that by many professed Christians it is more neglected than almost any other."
To Young Men

"To you, young man, are these words spoken, with a significant and impressive meaning. You, too, if unconverted, are dead, and on your way to an eternal sepulcher. Mistake us not. Alive, indeed, you may be to all that this world calls life. To the pleasures of sense, the allurements of sin, the scenes of time, the great excitements of' the day, ....And yet you are dead; your soul is "dead in trespasses and sins." You are dead to holiness, dead to spirituality, dead to all real religion, to all scriptural hope of heaven; and each throb of your pulse …

"Here we have the compound nature of man clearly stated. While the outward man, or physical part, decays, the inward man, the soul, is renewed, etc. But if man is a unit, and the soul, spirit, mind, or whatsoever materialists may choose to call it, is but an attribute of the physical nature, which, of course, decays and perishes with it, how can it, then, when that on which it entirely depends for its existence is perishing, be renewed day by day? Materialists may understand this, but we do not. Personality is, by the apostle in this text, attributed to …
