Private Sector Involvement In Airport Wildlife Work, Jay Tischendorf Sep 2011

Private Sector Involvement In Airport Wildlife Work, Jay Tischendorf

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 13th (2011)

Discussion

•FAA Guidance on WHAs
•FAA and USDA Relationship
•USDA Competition vs Private Sector
•Airport Wildlife - Canada vs USA
•Case Histories: Inconsistencies in WHA Contracting
•Questions and Comments

Thesis Statement

•USDA has long enjoyed a sole-source monopoly with the FAA for airport wildlife work, including WHAs and Control
•Despite guidelines ostensibly created to enhance opportunity for Private Sector, this USDA monopoly largely persists
•USDA WS functions as private enterprise and illegally competes for federal contract dollars

The FAA requires airfields handling commercial aircraft to address wildlife hazards if a real or potential wildlife problem is present (FAR Part …

Bird Strike Prevention Version 3.X, Arie Dekker, Hans Van Gasteren, Inge Both

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 13th (2011)

Bird strike prevention is dictated by 3 main aspects of human behaviour:

•Give the Black Jack (+ the bill) to someone else!
•Do something!
•Genesis 1:28

Genesis 1:28

God said to them: “….Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground…”

In Western society this statement has justified and contributed towards a human centered approach towards nature.

Bird strike prevention Version 1.x and 2.x are based on this assumption. “Birds have to make way for undisturbed aviation operations”

•Airplane certification;
•Actions by airport operators;
•Standard regulation by ICAO & National regulators;
•PROCEDURES BY CREWMEMBERS!

•Pilots are always in contact with all sort of hazards;

•Pilots play a big role in managing the risk of bird strikes;

•Pilots are usually the last persons who can avoid an accident;

PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH:

Assess the perceptions of a selected group of airlines pilots` in Brazil and their knowledge of recommended practices that could reduce the risk of accidents due to bird strikes.

Changing Climate, Changing Business Practices : Lessons From Innovative Growers, David Gray, Nicole Baxter, Meredith Fairbanks, Geraldine Pasqual Sep 2011

Changing Climate, Changing Business Practices : Lessons From Innovative Growers, David Gray, Nicole Baxter, Meredith Fairbanks, Geraldine Pasqual

Bulletins 4000 -

Climate change and increasing seasonal variability are challenging the production efforts of growers in lower rainfall environments of the Western Australian grain belt. Significantly less rainfall than the long-term average has fallen across southwest Western Australia during the past 30 years.

Seasonal rainfall has also become more variable with later starts to the growing season and a general shift to more summer and less winter rainfall. Day and night-time temperatures, particularly in winter and autumn, have gradually increased, while in some areas, the risk of frost in spring has increased.

Vocabulary Development In Greek Children: A Cross-Linguistic Comparison Using The Language Development Survey, Christina F. Papaeliou, Leslie Rescorla

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This study investigated vocabulary size and vocabulary composition in Greek children aged 1; 6 to 2; 11 using a Greek adaptation of Rescorla's Language Development Survey (LDS; Rescorla, 1989). Participants were 273 toddlers coming from monolingual Greek-speaking families. Greek LDS data were compared with US LDS data obtained from the instrument's normative sample (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000). Vocabulary size increased markedly with age, but Greek toddlers appeared to get off to a slower start in early word learning than US children. The correlation between percentage word use scores in Greek and US samples was moderate in size, indicating considerable overlap …

Climate change scenarios suggest an increase in tropical ocean temperature by 1–3°C by 2099, potentially killing many coral reefs. But Arabian/Persian Gulf corals already exist in this future thermal environment predicted for most tropical reefs and survived severe bleaching in 2010, one of the hottest years on record. Exposure to 33–35°C was on average twice as long as in non-bleaching years. Gulf corals bleached after exposure to temperatures above 34°C for a total of 8 weeks of which 3 weeks were above 35°C. This is more heat than any other corals can survive, providing an insight into the present limits …

Evaluation Of Perennial Forage Legumes And Herbs In Six Mediterranean Environments, Daniel Real, Guangdi D. Li, Steve Clark, Tony Albertsen, Richard C. Hayes, Matt D. Denton, Mario F. D'Antuono, B S. Dear

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

There is an absence of drought tolerant herbaceous perennial forage legume and herb options other than lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) for environments with Mediterranean-like climates common in extensive areas of Southern Australia, the Mediterranean basin, and Chile. Therefore, a collection of 174 forage perennial legume and herb entries from 103 species and 32 genera was evaluated for adaptation in a diverse range of Mediterranean climatic environments in Southern Australia. The seasonal rainfall distribution varied from moderately to highly winter dominant with long term average annual rainfall ranging from 318 to 655 mm. The entries were rated for productivity and …

Throughout history there have been many discoveries that have changed the world, including Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, and Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce’s microchip. There are a few analogous contributions that have been made in medicine: Sir Alexander’s discovery of penicillin, Lister’s principles of antiseptic technique, Salk and Sabin’s vaccines for polio, as well as numerous others. These innovative thinkers all had two factors in common. First, they were pioneers who faced problems that had no solutions at the time and who refused to accept the status quo in the face of great scrutiny and …

Nebraska Bird Review

The effects of major drought in the southwest United States on bird life in Nebraska has yet to be determined, as has the effect of the historic inundation of the Missouri River bottom lands from Gavins Point Dam to Rulo in eastern Nebraska. The water level at McConaughy is coincidentally at a maximum, ensuring that breeding habitat for Piping Plover and Least Tern was much reduced in the state overall. On the other hand, bottom lands wetlands above the flood level were expanded; Black-necked Stilts initiated a late nesting in Dakota Co in flooded fields that also attracted thousands of …

Nebraska Bird Review

The Bald Eagle (Halioeetus leucocephalus) was extirpated as a breeding species in Nebraska for most of the 20th Century. Nebraska's first active, successful, modern Bald Eagle nest was near Valley, Douglas County, in 1991 (Farrar 1991). Jorgensen et al. (2010) summarized modern Bald Eagle nesting records in Nebraska from 1950 to 2009. Jorgensen et al. (2010) noted the highest annual count of active nests was 54 in 2007. In this note we summarize the 2011 Bald Eagle nesting records in Nebraska.
