Time Cost Measurement Of Travel In Sydney And Implications For Public Transport Patronage Potential, David Emerson, Bruno Parolin Sep 2011

Time Cost Measurement Of Travel In Sydney And Implications For Public Transport Patronage Potential, David Emerson, Bruno Parolin

World Transit Research

This paper reports on findings from a study of which the central research aim was to understand the spatial characteristics of linked trips initiated from three dissimilar areas of Sydney, and to measure the times and costs of these trips by mode. Travel desire was graphically shown to be almost a uniform pattern of linked movement in all directions from the home, almost regardless of where in Sydney the home was located. The transport services were examined to establish just how well public transport was capable of satisfying this revealed demand. The three study areas were well serviced by public …

Positioning Needs For Public Transport, Nicola Mosca, Rocco Zito

World Transit Research

Public transport is often deemed to be a solution to reduce traffic congestion problems. A positive perception of this service is vital to getting more and more people to use this efficient mode of transportation. Accurate and reliable positioning systems, also known as Automatic Vehicle Location systems, play a major role in enabling fleet management systems (FMS) to achieve better planning and scheduling outcomes and hence provide a positive perception of the service. New positioning technologies are continuously being developed, due to ongoing demand of fleet management systems to provide better public transport services. However more research is required to …

Lealiifano, John R. Pluske, R R. Nicholls, F R. Dunshea, R G. Campbell, D P. Hennessy, D W. Miller, Christian F. Hansen, Bruce P. Mullan

Animal production and livestock research articles

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether altering the timing of the secondary anti-gonadotropin-releasing factor (GnRF) immunization closer to slaughter in male finishing pigs would reduce the increase in P2 fat depth (6.5 cm from the midline over the last rib), while still limiting the incidence of boar taint. Entire male pigs are immunized against GnRF to reduce the concentration of testicular steroids that in turn limits the incidence of boar taint. Additionally, testicle measurements and color measurements were taken to examine whether they could be used to differentiate nonimmunized entire males from immunized male pigs. A total …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The Produced biodiesel through the alkali-catalyzed transesterification must be treated before utilization as an alternative fuel. Low content of catalyst is one of the important pointers needed for passing the EN 14214 and ASTM D6751 international biodiesel standards. In this work, potassium hydroxide (KOH) was selected as catalyst for the transesterification reaction. Two different salts namely; methyl triphenyl phosphunium bromide (MTPB) and choline chloride (ChCl) in combination with four different hydrogen bond donors namely; glycerol, ethylene glycol, 2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide and triethylen glycol were selected to synthesis eighteen deep eutectic solvents (DESs). These DESs were employed as solvents for the removal of …

Sex Chromosome Mosaicism And Hybrid Speciation Among Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies, Krushnamegh Kunte, Cristina Shea, Matthew Aardema, J. Mark Scriber, Thomas E. Juenger, Lawrence E. Gilbert, Marcus R. Kronforst Sep 2011

Sex Chromosome Mosaicism And Hybrid Speciation Among Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies, Krushnamegh Kunte, Cristina Shea, Matthew Aardema, J. Mark Scriber, Thomas E. Juenger, Lawrence E. Gilbert, Marcus R. Kronforst

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Hybrid speciation, or the formation of a daughter species due to interbreeding between two parental species, is a potentially important means of diversification, because it generates new forms from existing variation. However, factors responsible for the origin and maintenance of hybrid species are largely unknown. Here we show that the North American butterfly Papilio appalachiensis is a hybrid species, with genomic admixture from Papilio glaucus and Papilio canadensis. Papilio appalachiensis has a mosaic phenotype, which is hypothesized to be the result of combining sex-linked traits from P. glaucus and P. canadensis. We show that P. appalachiensis' Z-linked genes associated with …

The Robot’S Record: Protecting The Value Of Intellectual Property In Music When Automation Drives The Marginal Cost Of Music Production To Zero, William P. Jacobson Sep 2011

The Robot’S Record: Protecting The Value Of Intellectual Property In Music When Automation Drives The Marginal Cost Of Music Production To Zero, William P. Jacobson

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

Technologies such as the Internet and MP3 file format have taken their toll on the traditional business models used by entities like record labels and music retailers. Now, technological innovations such as open-sourcing, crowdsourcing, and compu-sourcing are resulting in a democratization of music production that threatens to end the monopoly skilled musicians enjoy in the music-creation marketplace. These innovations are also driving the generation of an increasing supply of music with few or no reserved copyrights and a potential decline in the average value of intellectual property in music. This Comment explores the threat computer-generated music poses to the music …

Blood, Brains, And Bludgeoning, But Not Breasts: An Analysis And Critique Of Brown V. Entertainment Merchants Association, Margaret E. Jennings

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

In Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Ass’n, the Supreme Court held that a California statute banning the sale of extremely violent video games to minors was uncon-stitutional because it violated minors’ First Amendment rights. This decision high-lights the Court’s inconsistent application of evidentiary standards required for States to regulate the sale of erotic (not obscene) content and the sale of violent content to children.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown to positively influence calcium and bone metabolism. Earlier, we showed that CLA (equal mixture of c9t11-CLA and t10c12-CLA) could protect age-associated bone loss by modulating inflammatory markers and osteoclastogenesis. Since, c9t11-CLA and t10c12-CLA isomers differentially regulate functional parameters and gene expression in different cell types, we examined the efficacy of individual CLA isomers against age-associated bone loss using 12 months old C57BL/6 female mice fed for 6 months with 10% corn oil (CO), 9.5% CO+0.5% c9t11-CLA, 9.5% CO+0.5% t10c12-CLA or 9.5% CO+0.25% c9t11-CLA+0.25% t10c12-CLA. Mice fed a t10c12-CLA diet maintained a significantly higher …

The BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1 (BRI1) receptor kinase has recently been shown to possess tyrosine kinase activity, and preventing autophosphorylation of the tyrosine-831 regulatory site by site-directed mutagenesis enhances shoot growth. In this study, we characterized the increased leaf growth of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants expressing BRI1(Y831F)-Flag compared with BRI1-Flag (both driven by the native promoter and expressed in the bri1-5 weak allele background) and provide insights into the possible mechanisms involved. On average, relative leaf growth rate was increased 16% in the Y831F plants (in the bri1-5 background), and the gain of function of the Y831F-directed mutant was dominant in the …

Stat5a Expression In Swiss 3t3 Cells Promotes Adipogenesis In Vivo In An Athymic Mice Model System, William C. Stewart, Lisa A. Pearcy, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Many studies from our laboratories and others have shown that STAT5 expression and activity are increased during adipogenesis of murine and human adipocytes. Ectopic expression of STAT5A in fibroblasts or preadipocytes can confer or enhance adipogenesis. To determine whether STAT5A also plays a role in adipogenesis in vivo, we injected athymic mice with Swiss 3T3 cells expressing an empty pBABE retrovirus, Swiss cells expressing a pBABE retrovirus-containing STAT5A, or 3T3-F442A preadipocytes. Athymic mice injected with either 3T3-F442A cells or Swiss 3T3 cells expressing STAT5A resulted in fat pad formation at the site of injection. However, mice injected with Swiss cells …

Message from President: It would be fair enough to borrow from Shakespeare and proclaim the long budget crisis, which bodes to run from 2008 until 2013, as the fully nuclear winter of our discontent. Alas for the spirits of sorrow, the perpetual summer of our tropical state leaves us without adequate imagery to describe the gloom that pervades a campus that has been daunted by the people’s penury and demoralized by unaccountable private critics of exposed public servants. As Shakespeare well understood when he analyzed King Richard III, the deformity of the world eventually deforms even the strongest soul. Several …

Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, is a perennial woody plant native to Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay that is recognized as one of the most invasive weeds in Florida. A new species of leaflet galling psyllid was discovered attacking Brazilian peppertree in Bahia, Brazil in March 2010. In this paper, a formal morphological description of the new psyllid Calophya latiforceps sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Calophyidae) is presented along with molecular evidence confirming new species designation. This previously unknown natural enemy may have potential as a biological control agent for the Brazilian peppertree. Copyright © 2011 BioOne All rights reserved.

Receptors localized at the plasma membrane are critical for the recognition of pathogens. The molecular determinants that regulate receptor transport to the plasma membrane are poorly understood. In a screen for proteins that interact with the FLAGELIN-SENSITIVE2 (FLS2) receptor using Arabidopsis thaliana protein microarrays, we identified the reticulon-like protein RTNLB1. We showed that FLS2 interacts in vivo with both RTNLB1 and its homolog RTNLB2 and that a Ser-rich region in the N-terminal tail of RTNLB1 is critical for the interaction with FLS2. Transgenic plants that lack RTNLB1 and RTNLB2 (rtnlb1 rtnlb2) or overexpress RTNLB1 (RTNLB1ox) exhibit reduced activation of FLS2-dependent …

The identification of genome-wide cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) and characterization of their associated epigenetic features are fundamental steps toward the understanding of gene regulatory networks. Although integrative analysis of available genome-wide information can provide new biological insights, the lack of novel methodologies has become a major bottleneck. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis tool called combinatorial CRM decoder (CCD), which utilizes the publicly available information to identify and characterize genome-wide CRMs in a species of interest. CCD first defines a set of the epigenetic features which is significantly associated with a set of known CRMs as a code called 'trace code', …

Analyses Of Sorex Longirostris Distribution In Arkansas And Across The Mississippi River, Garrett Adam Mikel Sep 2011

Analyses Of Sorex Longirostris Distribution In Arkansas And Across The Mississippi River, Garrett Adam Mikel

Theses and Dissertations

The southeastern shrew (Sorex longirostris) is considered uncommon and a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Arkansas, exhibiting an apparent gap in eastern Arkansas. Soricinae are exceptionally small and short-lived with limited dispersal, making them especially prone to speciation through long-term zoogeographic barriers to gene flow consistent with phylogeographic category 1. Therefore, I compiled Arkansas occurrences, evaluated persistence at previous capture sites in the state, surveyed additional counties, quantified microhabitat at my capture locations, and evaluated systematic status of S. longirostris east and west of the Mississippi River using mitochondrial DNA. Number of documented specimens in Arkansas has increased to …
