Talking To Yourself: Garfield Minus Garfield As An Introduction To Techno-Companionship, Andy Engel Oct 2011

Talking To Yourself: Garfield Minus Garfield As An Introduction To Techno-Companionship, Andy Engel

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

A year ago while surfing the Internet, I came across a website called Garfield Minus Garfield (GMG), operated by artist/businessman Dan Walsh. Walsh received notoriety for his adaptations of the popular Garfield comic strip in which he removed its title character [1]. This act results in Garfield’s human counterpart, Jon Arbuckle, alone and talking to himself in the now empty space of the strip. A radical transformation occurs because of Garfield’s deletion that serves to emphasize the crucial role Jon and Garfield’s relationship plays in our perception of the world within the strip. Walsh begins the site with …

Canada Goose Crop Damage Abatement In South Dakota, Troy M. Radtke, Charles D. Dieter Oct 2011

Canada Goose Crop Damage Abatement In South Dakota, Troy M. Radtke, Charles D. Dieter

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) can cause considerable damage to crops during summer when geese are flightless. We evaluated the effectiveness of a program designed to alleviate crop damage on soybeans by Canada geese in South Dakota, USA. The applications of electric fences, feeding stations, and propane cannons reduced the area of crop damage by 90% in 2006 and 80% in 2007, but the timing was important. Fields where abatement practices were applied early in the growing season had less damage than fields where they were applied later. Abatement practices that were properly applied as soon as damage started …

A Search For Mri Diffusion Coefficient Standards, Hongmei Yuan Oct 2011

A Search For Mri Diffusion Coefficient Standards, Hongmei Yuan

Theses

Diffusion coefficients (D) can be readily measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instruments. Operators of these instruments often utilize standards with known diffusion coefficients to rapidly and conveniently test the performance of the NMR or MRI system to measure diffusion. A variety of these standards have been proposed in the scientific literature. This thesis describes a diffusion standard based on water constrained by container geometry, specifically water between tightly packed, parallel glass fiber filaments. The restricted diffusion of water in this environment gives a diffusion coefficient which is selectable by the choice of data …

Protective Cd8 Memory T Cell Responses To Mouse Melanoma Are Generated In The Absence Of Cd4 T Cell Help, Anik L. Côté, Katelyn T. Byrne, Shannon M. Steinberg, Peisheng Zhang, Mary Jo Turk

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: We have previously demonstrated that temporary depletion of CD4 T cells in mice with progressive B16 melanoma, followed by surgical tumor excision, induces protective memory CD8 T cell responses to melanoma/melanocyte antigens. We also showed that persistence of these CD8 T cells is supported, in an antigen-dependent fashion, by concurrent autoimmune melanocyte destruction. Herein we explore the requirement of CD4 T cell help in priming and maintaining this protective CD8 T cell response to melanoma.

Herd-Health Programs For Limited-Resource Farmers: Prevention Versus Treatment, Renita W. Marshall Oct 2011

Herd-Health Programs For Limited-Resource Farmers: Prevention Versus Treatment, Renita W. Marshall

Journal of Extension

In recognition of the changing influences on animal health, Extension professionals are charged with the responsibility of delivering educational programs to our limited resources farmers on the importance of herd health. Herd-health programs must be designed and implemented with the help of an Extension veterinarian to provide routine, planned procedures that will prevent or minimize on farm diseases. There is a necessity for Extension professionals to get involved in educating our small farmers on the importance of animal health to enable them to maximize opportunities to participate in new markets for agriculture products.

Influence Of 4-H Horse Project Involvement On Development Of Life Skills, Kp Anderson, L Karr-Lillienthal

Journal of Extension

Four-H horse project members who competed in non-riding horse contests were surveyed to evaluate the influence of their horse project participation on life-skill development. Contests in which youth competed included Horse Bowl, Demonstrations, Public Speaking, and Art. Youth indicated a positive influence on both life-skill development and horse knowledge. Eighty-six percent indicated they strongly to moderately agreed their life skills were enhanced. Youth participating in these types of projects utilized the horse as a tool to increase their science-based knowledge combined with life-skill enhancement to make them more productive young people.

Angels In The Metroplex: Hegel, The Apocrypha, And Intertextuality In Der Himmel Über Berlin (Wings Of Desire), Carrol Fry Oct 2011

Angels In The Metroplex: Hegel, The Apocrypha, And Intertextuality In Der Himmel Über Berlin (Wings Of Desire), Carrol Fry

Journal of Religion & Film

Semiologist Julia Kristeva defines intertextuality as the interaction of texts. “Any text builds itself as a mosaic of quotations; any text is the absorption and transformation of another.” Kristeva and other critics who analyze the interweaving of texts assume, as Plottel and Charney put it, that “Every text echoes another text unto infinity, weaving the fabric of culture itself.” Intertextual criticism offers interesting insights into Wim Wenders’ ironic portrayal of the traditional religious perspective on desire as opposed to Hegelian desire in Der Himmel über Berlin (American title Wings of Desire).

The Steroid/Peptide Theory Of Social Bonds: Integrating Testosterone And Peptide Responses For Classifying Social Behavioral Contexts, Sari M. Van Anders, Katherine L. Goldey, Patty X. Kuo Oct 2011

The Steroid/Peptide Theory Of Social Bonds: Integrating Testosterone And Peptide Responses For Classifying Social Behavioral Contexts, Sari M. Van Anders, Katherine L. Goldey, Patty X. Kuo

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Hormones, and hormone responses to social contexts, are the proximate mechanisms of evolutionary pathways to pair bonds and other social bonds. Testosterone (T) is implicated in trade-offs relevant to pair bonding, and oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) are positively tied to social bonding in a variety of species. Here, we present the Steroid/Peptide Theory of Social Bonds (S/P Theory), which integrates T and peptides to provide a model, set of predictions, and classification system for social behavioral contexts related to social bonds. The S/P Theory also resolves several paradoxes apparent in the literature on social bonds and hormones: the …

A Sense Of Place: Examining Music-Based Tourism And Its Implications In Destination Venue Placement, Richard Bret Campbell Oct 2011

A Sense Of Place: Examining Music-Based Tourism And Its Implications In Destination Venue Placement, Richard Bret Campbell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Music, and the ability to make it, understand it and interpret it, is one of the characteristics that make us uniquely human. However, when it comes to seeing the performance of live music, there are other variables that come into play when determining where to see a concert. The potential connection between people, music, and a “sense of place” are explored in this examination of music-based tourism. Based on information from journals and related news media, and using parallels to the sports tourism industry, the paper found a distinct connection between humans and music in the context of human development, …

Isn't It Ironic? The Undermining Of American Public Policy By American Tax Law, And The Ramifications On Middle East Peace, Amanda Berman Oct 2011

Isn't It Ironic? The Undermining Of American Public Policy By American Tax Law, And The Ramifications On Middle East Peace, Amanda Berman

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note critiques the broad and vague definition of "charitable" under U.S. tax law, particularly in the context of domestic organizations operating internationally. It argues that the current system allows organizations to act contrary to U.S. public policy while receiving tax-exempt status, and it calls for reform to prevent the misuse of tax-deductible funds for activities that undermine government policies. The analysis focuses on the IRS's oversight failures and the need for clearer guidelines to ensure charitable organizations align with public interest and policy goals.

Why do some people donate blood while most eligible individuals do not? Why do many self-identified environmentalists eat meat? Why do numerous people who are concerned with social justice ignore oppressive practices affecting women? These questions have both ethical and psychological dimensions. Ethics, as it is traditionally understood in terms of rules, rights, and consequences, emphasizes rationality but often reason is not enough to compel moral action. One can make compelling rational arguments with empirical evidence to support donating blood, becoming vegan, and advocating education and aid to assist girls and women in developing nations. Yet, cognitive assent is insufficient …

The Invisible Forest: Conservation Easement Databases And The End Of The Clandestine Conservation Of Natural Lands , James L. Olmsted Oct 2011

The Invisible Forest: Conservation Easement Databases And The End Of The Clandestine Conservation Of Natural Lands , James L. Olmsted

Law and Contemporary Problems

Olmsted talks about "invisible forest" refers to forest lands -- and, for that matter, any other land types -- protected by a perpetual conservation easement, the existence and location of which are concealed from the public, whether deliberately or because of the opaque nature of the easement process. Because easements, like other forms of deeds, must be recorded at the local land registry or recorder's office, they can never be made undiscoverable. But, despite the efforts of some states and conservation organizations to compile conservation easement data for public consumption, there are few functional systems that comprehensively track and provide …

Exploring Net Benefit Maximization: Conservation Easements And The Public-Private Interface, Julie Ann Gustanski, John B. Wright Oct 2011

Exploring Net Benefit Maximization: Conservation Easements And The Public-Private Interface, Julie Ann Gustanski, John B. Wright

Law and Contemporary Problems

Gustanski and Wright talk about conservation easements and the public-private interface. The ease of application across varied lands coupled with the financial and tax-associated benefits of conservation easements have driven the popularity of their use in conserving private lands across the US. Conservation easements typically require sizeable public funding resources, which are provided through either direct public expenditures via diverse public programs established to promote the conservation of land or through tax benefits.

Evaluating Conservation Effectiveness And Adaptation In Dynamic Landscapes, Adena R. Rissman Oct 2011

Evaluating Conservation Effectiveness And Adaptation In Dynamic Landscapes, Adena R. Rissman

Law and Contemporary Problems

Rissman talks about evaluating conservation easement effectiveness requires interdisciplinary research that reaches beyond legal analysis to examine how easements influence human behaviors, which subsequently influence environmental conditions. Conservation easement effectiveness is not a fixed target, but is influenced over time by social and ecological landscape change. The promise of perpetuity is central to the appeal of conservation easements within the conservation movement.

Conservation Easements At The Climate Change Crossroads, Jessica Owley Oct 2011

Conservation Easements At The Climate Change Crossroads, Jessica Owley

Law and Contemporary Problems

Owley discusses the conundrum that occurs when climate change leads to a landscape that conflicts with conservation easement terms. A conservation easement that is too changeable endangers the perpetual protection that is the cornerstone of conservation easements. But, forcing the landscape to fit a conservation easement requires active management, something more often associated with fee-simple ownership.

Conservation Easements And Perpetuity: Till Legislation Do Us Part, Richard Brewer Oct 2011

Conservation Easements And Perpetuity: Till Legislation Do Us Part, Richard Brewer

Law and Contemporary Problems

Brewer talks about conservation easements and perpetuity. Although conservation easements have many appealing features, their drawbacks have caused some observers to see the heavy reliance on them by land trusts as a weakness with possibly serious consequences. The protection provided may be fragile or, at least, of unproven dependability.
