Calcium-Mediated Mechanisms Of Cystic Expansion, Shakila Abdul-Majeed, Surya M. Nauli Oct 2011

Calcium-Mediated Mechanisms Of Cystic Expansion, Shakila Abdul-Majeed, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

In this review, we will discuss several well-accepted signaling pathways toward calcium-mediated mechanisms of cystic expansion. The second messenger calcium ion has contributed to a vast diversity of signal transduction pathways. We will dissect calcium signaling as a possible mechanism that contributes to renal cyst formation. Because cytosolic calcium also regulates an array of signaling pathways, we will first discuss cilia-induced calcium fluxes, followed by Wnt signaling that has attributed to much-discussed planar cell polarity. We will then look at the relationship between cytosolic calcium and cAMP as one of the most important aspects of cyst progression. The signaling of …

New Insights Into The Androgen-Targeted Therapies And Epigenetic Therapies In Prostate Cancer., Abhijit M Godbole, Vincent C O Njar

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States, and it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American men. The androgen receptor (AR), a receptor of nuclear family and a transcription factor, is the most important target in this disease. While most efforts in the clinic are currently directed at lowering levels of androgens that activate AR, resistance to androgen deprivation eventually develops. Most prostate cancer deaths are attributable to this castration-resistant form of prostate cancer (CRPC). Recent work has shed light on the importance of epigenetic events including facilitation of AR signaling …

The Evolution Of Fiscal Decentralization In China And India: A Comparative Study Of Design And Performance, Yinghua Jin, Jenny Ligthart, Mark Rider Oct 2011

The Evolution Of Fiscal Decentralization In China And India: A Comparative Study Of Design And Performance, Yinghua Jin, Jenny Ligthart, Mark Rider

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

In this article, we compare and contrast the design and performance of China and India’s intergovernmental fiscal systems. We find that there are remarkable similarities in the design and performance of China and India’s intergovernmental fiscal systems. More specifically, both countries have highly decentralized expenditures assignments and highly centralized revenue assignments. As a result, sub-national governments in both countries must rely on fiscal transfers to finance their assigned functions. Finally, there is considerable off the books and hidden borrowing by sub-national governments in both countries. We also find that there are considerable and growing disparities in the rate of expenditure …

Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie Oct 2011

Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Death and dying is not myth but a reality of life and living. Though some of us view death as a stranger and try to evade its existence as much as we can, death is inevitable. This paper proposes the inclusion of death and dying in the school curriculum and offers several ways of integrating death and dying in the curriculum for different grade levels. It argues that death has visited frequently on our school campuses and in national life over the past decades and there is always a sense of despair, panic and uncertainty about how to react to …

The 2007 Chinese Pet Food Crisis: On U.S. Media’S Coverage And U.S. Pet-Owners Reactions, May Hongmei Gao Oct 2011

The 2007 Chinese Pet Food Crisis: On U.S. Media’S Coverage And U.S. Pet-Owners Reactions, May Hongmei Gao

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

In the midst of U.S. citizens’ growing concern of food quality, few issues have shocked the American conscience as the 2007 pet food crisis. The crisis, caused by the contamination of mainly pet food with ingredients imported from China, resulted in the largest recall in U.S. history. Poisonous chemicals such as “melamine,” “aminopterin,” and “cyanuric acid” were identified in pet food products imported from China. The pet food contamination was eventually extended to the feed for fish, pigs, and chicken, animals destined to be part of human food supply. This research showed that most American families own cats and dogs …

Brics At The Gate: Modern International Monetary System In Conditions Of Balanced Uncertainty, Sourabh Gupta, Ashok K. Roy

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

The history of the modern international monetary system has been one of balanced uncertainty, with a fundamental trade-off - and tension - persisting between it anchoring mechanism and the mechanism for adjusting imbalances within. Ever since the system’s moorings drifted from its anchoring to gold and the assured automaticity of convertibility, the adjustment mechanism to regulate intra-systemic imbalances - floating exchange rates, capital controls, coordinated international intervention, or a combination thereof - has had to be progressively scaled upwards to account for the contingent nature of the tie to gold. Attempts to weave this balance have typically tended to break …

The Ability To Change Or The Willingness To Change: Stakeholder Interpretation Of Adversity, Stuart A. Napshin, Donna M. De Carolis Oct 2011

The Ability To Change Or The Willingness To Change: Stakeholder Interpretation Of Adversity, Stuart A. Napshin, Donna M. De Carolis

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Firms often face adverse environmental events which have the potential to destroy the value the firm has created. This study focuses on the occurrence of adverse events. In particular, we address the research question of what organizational and managerial characteristics impact shareholder interpretation of the severity of the adverse event. Building on insights from the resource based and upper echelon theories, we propose that bundles of firm capabilities and top management team composition signal to shareholders the ability of the firm to handle the adverse event and to engage in strategic change. We test our model in the biotechnology industry, …

Little Ecological Divergence Associated With Speciation In Two African Rain Forest Tree Genera, Thomas Lp Couvreur, Holly Porter-Morgan, Jan J. Wieringa, Lars W. Chatrou Oct 2011

Little Ecological Divergence Associated With Speciation In Two African Rain Forest Tree Genera, Thomas Lp Couvreur, Holly Porter-Morgan, Jan J. Wieringa, Lars W. Chatrou

Publications and Research

Background The tropical rain forests (TRF) of Africa are the second largest block of this biome after the Amazon and exhibit high levels of plant endemism and diversity. Two main hypotheses have been advanced to explain speciation processes that have led to this high level of biodiversity: allopatric speciation linked to geographic isolation and ecological speciation linked to ecological gradients. Both these hypotheses rely on ecology: in the former conservation of ecological niches through time is implied, while in the latter adaptation via selection to alternative ecological niches would be a prerequisite. Here, we investigate the role of ecology in …

Looking At Zoos, Irus Braverman Oct 2011

Looking At Zoos, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Looking at zoos from the perspective of zoo personnel, this article explores the importance of vision in the zoo’s presentation of its animals as well as the major technologies that the zoo uses to intensify such animal visions. On the one end of the spectrum, zoogeography and immersion design are used at the zoo exhibit to enable zoogoers to see animals in their naturalistic settings. On the opposite end of the spectrum, animals are caged and cared for in the highly artificial settings of the zoo’s holding area, with little or no exposure to the public gaze. In between these …
