Increasing Higher Level Language Skills To Improve Reading Comprehension, Tiffany Hogan, Mindy Sittner Bridges, Laura M. Justice, Kate Cain Nov 2011

Increasing Higher Level Language Skills To Improve Reading Comprehension, Tiffany Hogan, Mindy Sittner Bridges, Laura M. Justice, Kate Cain

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Reading comprehension involves two primary processes: (a) decoding printed text and (b) understanding language accessed through the process of decoding. In the early years of reading development, children’s ability to comprehend text is largely constrained by individual differences in decoding printed text; however, once decoding becomes automatized, reading comprehension is largely dependent upon one’s skills in language comprehension (Catts, Hogan, & Adlof, 2005). In recent decades, numerous studies have investigated how children develop decoding skills and how, when these skills do not develop normally, educators can effectively intervene (e.g., Denton & Mathes, 2003; Simmons et al., 2008; Vellutino, Scanlon, Small, …

Puffery, Whitney Warne Nov 2011

Puffery, Whitney Warne

Theses

The external body is a place to perform a version of ourselves, rather than be ourselves. To perform is to strike a balance between the self and the rules, between individual action and gesture and the script--between what you know and what other people tell you to know. Puffery explores the culturally constructed performance and expected behaviors of the modern female. I have created video and photography documented durational performances that question a female's relationship with exterior presentation. Viewers watch as she exposes her façade--examining it and breaking it down in an effort to negotiate self, power, and control.

Digitization Of Archival Collections In Africa For Scholarly Communication: Issues, Strategies, And Challenges, Brendan Eze Asogwa Nov 2011

Digitization Of Archival Collections In Africa For Scholarly Communication: Issues, Strategies, And Challenges, Brendan Eze Asogwa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Experience and observations have revealed that most archives and libraries in Africa today are filled with materials recorded in analogue formats and the traditional or analogue librarians and archivists are those who are still carrying out the tasks of acquiring, organizing, and preserving the print documents and helping the readers in locating the information they need.

In developing countries this picture has rapidly changed due to the influence of advances in computer technology. The physical materials are gradually giving way to electronic print, and online public access catalogue (OPAC) is obliterating the needs for users to physically visit the library …

Rural Farmers' Problems Accessing Agricultural Information: A Case Study Of Nsukka Local Government Area Of Enugu State, Nigeria, Nnenna A. Obidike

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Rural farmers account for the greater part of the population of any developing country such as Nigeria. Governments of developing countries have a major responsibility of ensuring that there is adequate rural development in their various communities and local governments which would lead to effective and efficient agricultural systems that will not only supply food and animal protein but also foster the utilization of natural resources in a sustainable manner (CGIAR, 1995). When the rural farmers lack access to knowledge and information that would help them achieve maximum agricultural yield, they are not only grope in the dark but are …

Betting On The U.S. Market A Discussion Of The Legality Of Sports Gaming Businesses, Glenn Light, Karl Rutledge, Quinton Singleton

Occasional Papers

Over time, the US sports gaming industry has progressed dramatically beyond what the US anti-gaming law drafters envisioned. The result is a system of mostly antiquated laws controlling modern industry causing confusion across the board. This discussion, therefore, intends to shed light on the US sports gaming legal framework, including analysis of the preeminent US laws that regulate the sports gaming industry and a brief review of various sports gaming businesses that fall within the US legal rubric.

Lymphotoxin-Beta Receptor Blockade Reduces Cxcl13 In Lacrimal Glands And Improves Corneal Integrity In The Nod Model Of Sjögren's Syndrome, Roy A. Fava, Susan M. Kennedy, Sheryl G. Wood, Anne I. Bolstad, Jadwiga Bienkowska, Adrian Papandile, John A. Kelly Nov 2011

Lymphotoxin-Beta Receptor Blockade Reduces Cxcl13 In Lacrimal Glands And Improves Corneal Integrity In The Nod Model Of Sjögren's Syndrome, Roy A. Fava, Susan M. Kennedy, Sheryl G. Wood, Anne I. Bolstad, Jadwiga Bienkowska, Adrian Papandile, John A. Kelly

Dartmouth Scholarship

In Sjögren's syndrome, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye) is associated with infiltration of lacrimal glands by leukocytes and consequent losses of tear-fluid production and the integrity of the ocular surface. We investigated the effect of blockade of the lymphotoxin-beta receptor (LTBR) pathway on lacrimal-gland pathology in the NOD mouse model of Sjögren's syndrome.

Erect Wing Facilitates Context-Dependent Wnt/Wingless Signaling By Recruiting The Cell-Specific Armadillo-Tcf Adaptor Earthbound To Chromatin, Nan Xin, Hassina Benchabane, Ai Tian, Kerrie Nguyen, Lindsay Klofas, Yashi Ahmed Nov 2011

Erect Wing Facilitates Context-Dependent Wnt/Wingless Signaling By Recruiting The Cell-Specific Armadillo-Tcf Adaptor Earthbound To Chromatin, Nan Xin, Hassina Benchabane, Ai Tian, Kerrie Nguyen, Lindsay Klofas, Yashi Ahmed

Dartmouth Scholarship

During metazoan development, the Wnt/Wingless signal transduction pathway is activated repetitively to direct cell proliferation, fate specification, differentiation and apoptosis. Distinct outcomes are elicited by Wnt stimulation in different cellular contexts; however, mechanisms that confer context specificity to Wnt signaling responses remain largely unknown. Starting with an unbiased forward genetic screen in Drosophila, we recently uncovered a novel mechanism by which the cell-specific co-factor Earthbound 1 (Ebd1), and its human homolog jerky, promote interaction between the Wnt pathway transcriptional co-activators B-catenin/Armadillo and TCF to facilitate context-dependent Wnt signaling responses. Here, through the same genetic screen, we find an unanticipated requirement …

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: My Trip To California, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Now that the war was finished, I had to look for a job. I decided to go first to New York. I didn't take along the many and large mattresses on which I had rested during four years, nor could the "guards" that used to jump in the grass follow me, and they probably have not escaped their certain death. So I came to New York. It was twelve at night. We could leave the boat only the next morning because all inns were closed. Thus I headed to town in the early morning hours and saw a sign that …

Cornhusker Economics

In the October 12, 2011 edition of Cornhusker Economics, Professor Dave Aiken brought us up to date on the issue of food animal welfare as it might affect Nebraska agriculture. His update was rendered out of date a mere six days later when the Nebraska Farmers’ Union (NEFU) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) announced an agreement and the formation of a new advisory body, the Nebraska Agricultural Council of the Humane Society of the United States. The stated goal of the new organization is “To advance more humane practices on farms and ranches and to …

Eve Disordered: The Relationship Of Feminine Happiness And Hierarchy In Paradise Lost, Jennifer Mccafferty Nov 2011

Eve Disordered: The Relationship Of Feminine Happiness And Hierarchy In Paradise Lost, Jennifer Mccafferty

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Milton's Eve falls into sin when she attempts to upset the hierarchy by and for which she has been created, an attempt which offends on multiple levels. Her choice to disobey God's command violates her position in respect to him, and her desire to attain knowledge - a defining characteristic of masculinity in Milton's universe - encroaches on Adam's position while degrading the defining characteristic of her femininity - her beauty. However, an analysis of the simultaneously contractual and companionate marriage model that appears in Paradise Lost, paired with an appreciation for the historical context for Milton's depiction of the …

Chromosome Malorientation Precedes Nondisjunction During Female Meiosis I, Shane Gillies Nov 2011

Chromosome Malorientation Precedes Nondisjunction During Female Meiosis I, Shane Gillies

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Meiosis is a specialized form of cellular division in which the gametes are formed. During female meiosis I, homologous chromosomes must coorient to opposite poles to ensure proper segregation, otherwise nondisjunction can occur which would form aneuploid gametes. The recent discovery that chromosomes do in fact congress prior to metaphase I arrest in Drosophila requires a reexamination of the mechanisms behind nondisjunction. To do this, a series of altered disjunction (ald) mutant alleles generated by imprecise excision of a P element in the 5’ UTR were compared through a genetic nondisjunction assay and cytological examinations for the chromosomes' …

The Internet’S Influence On Environmental Awareness, Jessica Vandrick Nov 2011

The Internet’S Influence On Environmental Awareness, Jessica Vandrick

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the influence that the mass media have had on environmentalism issues since the early 1960s, and how the convergence of media on the Internet has changed the way environmental topics are communicated to and perceived by the public. For the purpose of this paper, mass media refers to all media technologies which are used for mass communication including radio, television, newspapers, the Internet, and films. Using BeGreenWeb, a web site about environmentalism, as a case study, this paper will examine the role of media in environmental awareness and how the Internet can be used effectively to inform …

Ophthalmology For The Myopic Methodologist: A Review Of Five Ways Of Doing Qualitative Analysis, Carl Root

The Qualitative Report

In Five Ways of Doing Qualitative Analysis, Frederick J. Wertz, Kathy Charmaz, Linda M. McMullen, Ruthellen Josselson, and Rosemarie Anderson provide students and researchers with both a broad knowledge base and specific examples of each of their preferred methods of analysis. The authors apply their respective expertise of phenomenological psychology, grounded theory, discourse analysis, narrative research, and intuitive inquiry to sixth author Emalinda McSpadden's narrative of responding to an unfortunate situation. The result is a comprehensive comparison of each method emphasizing unique strengths and weaknesses in each approach as well as the reflexivity required of researchers utilizing such analyses.

Detecting Suspicious Behavior With Low-Cost Sensors, Ahren Alexander Reed Nov 2011

Detecting Suspicious Behavior With Low-Cost Sensors, Ahren Alexander Reed

Master's Theses

A proof of concept is created that demonstrates how low-cost sensors and a simple software solution can be used to proactively detect IED placement. The main goal is to detect suspicious behavior; Specifically we derive requirements that loitering, meandering, improper location and object placement shall be detected. Current methods being used to detect Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are costly in terms of equipment and risk to life, and many are retroactive; IED detection occurs long after explosives are placed. A prototype system is explored with the quality attributes of being low-cost, proactive and using simple software methods. A wireless sensor …

(Wp 2011-09) The Development Effects Of Natural Resources: A Geographical Dimension, Fabrizio Carmignani, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

Despite the recent growth resurgence, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains the poorest region in the world. At the same time, it is a region that heavily relies on natural resources. In this paper we investigate the extent to which the second fact helps explain the first one. The distinctive feature of our study is that we take a geographical perspective and allow the effect of natural resources to differ across regions of the world. Our findings suggest that (i) the effect of natural resource intensity on per-capita income is positive and significant in general, but almost negligible and possibly negative in …

Linking Fruit Traits To Variation In Predispersal Vertebrate Seed Predation, Insect Seed Predation, And Pathogen Attack, Noelle G. Beckman, Helene C. Muller-Landau

Biology Faculty Publications

The importance of vertebrates, invertebrates, and pathogens for plant communities has long been recognized, but their absolute and relative importance in early recruitment of multiple coexisting tropical plant species has not been quantified. Further, little is known about the relationship of fruit traits to seed mortality due to natural enemies in tropical plants. To investigate the influences of vertebrates, invertebrates, and pathogens on reproduction of seven canopy plant species varying in fruit traits, we quantified reductions in fruit development and seed germination due to vertebrates, invertebrates, and fungal pathogens through experimental removal of these enemies using canopy exclosures, insecticide, and …

Exploitation Of Environmental Noise By An Araneophagic Assassin Bug, Anne E. Wignall, Robert R. Jackson, R. Stimson Wilcox, Phillip W. Taylor Nov 2011

Exploitation Of Environmental Noise By An Araneophagic Assassin Bug, Anne E. Wignall, Robert R. Jackson, R. Stimson Wilcox, Phillip W. Taylor

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Predatory arthropods that specialize in invading webs and preying on the resident spiders ('araneophagic predators') face special challenges. As webs are exceedingly good at transmitting vibrations, it is difficult for a web invader to move through the web and remain undetected by the spider. An araneophagic predator that generates vibrations in the web may risk prey escaping or even counterattacking. To increase the chances of an undetected approach, predators may exploit episodes of environmental noise to approach, while their prey's ability to detect them is compromised ('opportunistic smokescreen behaviour'). Here we provide the first experimental evidence of convergent opportunistic smokescreen …

From Cosmogony To Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies In Vedic Cosmogony And Samskara Rituals, Christine Boulos Nov 2011

From Cosmogony To Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies In Vedic Cosmogony And Samskara Rituals, Christine Boulos

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that the inscription of bodies is necessary in order to constitute the cosmos, gender and sex. A study of the Vedic cosmogonic mythologies of the deities Purusha and Prajapati illustrates the ways in which sacrifice, as a form of inscription, constitutes the cosmos by ordering and fashioning the boundaries of the bodies of the deities through differentiation and unification. An analysis of samskaras, or consecratory rites of The Law Code of Manu, show that they operate as regulatory norms in order to constitute sex and gender. But the instability and unnaturalness of the categories of gender and …

Sorting Through The Junk Box: Dickens's Objects And The Great Exhibition Of 1851, Audrey Raymi Grounds Nov 2011

Sorting Through The Junk Box: Dickens's Objects And The Great Exhibition Of 1851, Audrey Raymi Grounds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In Bleak House , Dickens satirizes contemporary conditions in London in order to diagnose what he sees as social and industrial ills to prescribe a solution to the "Condition-of-England" question. Beginning with a review of the topicality in the novel, I use Dickens's personal letters, the text of Bleak House , and articles from Household Words to explain his contempt with the Great Exhibition, misguided philanthropy, and sanitary conditions, among others. Ultimately, it is his anathema to the Great Exhibition which drives both Dickens's plot and the issues he explores. Dickens's mockery of England is refracted and emphasized through his …

Georgia High-Stakes Testing: The Correlation Between Eighth Grade And Ninth Grade Achievement, Venita Lee Bruton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Standardized tests are an education reality and an important accountability consideration in most states and school systems. Most states require standardized assessments to meet requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Changes to curriculum and instruction and to the school culture frequently occur through a school improvement process, and standardized test data are often used to inform these decisions. The school improvement process and professional development should focus on student learning, but how administrators and teachers perceive standardized testing and the ensuing data analyses is an important consideration in understanding what needs improvement and the professional …
