Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) can serve as a model system to study heritable skin diseases. The skin is rapidly developed during the first 5-6 days of embryonic growth, accompanied by expression of skin-specific genes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of wild-type zebrafish at day 5 reveals a two-cell-layer epidermis separated from the underlying collagenous stroma by a basement membrane with fully developed hemidesmosomes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals an ordered surface contour of keratinocytes with discrete microridges. To gain insight into epidermal morphogenesis, we have employed morpholino-mediated knockdown of the abca12 and snap29 genes, which are crucial for secretion of lipids and …

Catastrophic Oil Spills And The Problem Of Insurance, Kenneth S. Abraham
Catastrophic Oil Spills And The Problem Of Insurance, Kenneth S. Abraham
Vanderbilt Law Review
The BP oil spill of 2010 focused considerable attention on the operating conduct of BP, on the potential liability of BP and other entities associated with the spill, and on the fund that BP established to provide compensation to victims of the spill. Much less attention has been paid, however, to the nature and scope of insurance covering losses caused by catastrophic environmental disasters such as oil spills. BP's establishment of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, and the compensation that will be paid by that facility, will likely dampen awareness of the mismatches between the resulting losses and the insurance …
A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan
A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hierarchical planning is an approach of planning by composing and executing hierarchically arranged plans to solve some problems. Most symbolic-based hierarchical planners have been devised to allow the knowledge to be described expressively. However, a great challenge is to automatically seek and acquire new plans on the fly. This paper presents a novel neural-based model of hierarchical planning that can seek and acquired new plans on-line if the necessary knowledge are lacking. Inspired by findings in neuropsychology, plans can be inherently learnt, retrieved, and manipulated simultaneously rather than discretely processed like in most symbolic approaches. Using a multi-channel adaptive resonance …
Sensing With The Motor Cortex, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos, Aaron J. Suminski
Sensing With The Motor Cortex, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos, Aaron J. Suminski
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The primary motor cortex is a critical node in the network of brain regions responsible for voluntary motor behavior. It has been less appreciated, however, that the motor cortex exhibits sensory responses in a variety of modalities including vision and somatosensation. We review current work that emphasizes the heterogeneity in sensorimotor responses in the motor cortex and focus on its implications for cortical control of movement as well as for brain-machine interface development.
Cognitive Bias Modification: Past Perspectives, Current Findings, And Future Applications, Paula T. Hertel, A. Mathews
Cognitive Bias Modification: Past Perspectives, Current Findings, And Future Applications, Paula T. Hertel, A. Mathews
Psychology Faculty Research
Research conducted within the general paradigm of Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) reveals that emotional biases in attention, interpretation, and memory are not merely associated with emotional disorders but contribute to them. After briefly describing research on both emotional biases and their modification, we examine similarities between CBM paradigms and older experimental paradigms used in research on learning and memory. We also compare the techniques and goals of CBM research to other approaches to understanding cognition/emotion interactions. From a functional perspective, the CBM tradition reminds us to use experimental tools to evaluate assumptions about clinical phenomena and more generally, about causal …
Tracking Development Of The Corpus Callosum In Fetal And Early Postnatal Baboons Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Kimberley A. Phillips, P. Kochunov
Tracking Development Of The Corpus Callosum In Fetal And Early Postnatal Baboons Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Kimberley A. Phillips, P. Kochunov
Psychology Faculty Research
Although the maturation of the corpus callosum (CC) can serve as a sensitive marker for normative antenatal and postnatal brain development, little is known about its development across this critical period. While high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging can provide an opportunity to examine normative brain development in humans, concerns remain over the exposure of developing fetuses to non-essential imaging. Nonhuman primates can provide a valuable model for normative brain maturation. Baboons share several important developmental characteristics with humans, including a highly orchestrated pattern of cerebral development. Developmental changes in total CC area and its subdivisions were examined across the antenatal (weeks …

Creating Animation For A Video Game Opening - The War Of Water, Yen-Chin Wu
Theses
The project creates 3D animation for a video game opening. The main idea of this animation is to ask people to save the water. The designer created the characters, the story, and the animation. The main stage is set in 2116 AD. The world has no clean water, and the main character, Taimei, is a twenty-year-old girl, who is going to find a new source of water for all of humanity. On the other hand, the R.O.C. Robot Army is doing everything they can to stop her. This game will adapt Japanese cartoon style with Toon Shader and Toon Outlines …
Infant Places, Spaces And Objects: Exploring The Physical In Learning Environments For Infants Under Two, Helen Lynch
Infant Places, Spaces And Objects: Exploring The Physical In Learning Environments For Infants Under Two, Helen Lynch
Doctoral
While the relationship between play and development is well documented, there is less known about the influence of the physical environment in that process. The purpose of this qualitative study is to describe play interactions of infants under two with the home physical environment. The aim is to explore and identify ways in which infants develop and learn through engaging with objects and spaces of everyday life in the home. A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed to gather data on five infants, two new-borns and three one-year olds, and their families over twelve months. Data was generated through video, interview …
A Test Method For Optimal Micro-Screen Drum Filter Selection, Eoin Dolan, Ronan Oliver, Niall Murphy, Michael O'Hehir
A Test Method For Optimal Micro-Screen Drum Filter Selection, Eoin Dolan, Ronan Oliver, Niall Murphy, Michael O'Hehir
Other resources
In order to meet increasing demand for seafood worldwide Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are frequently used. These systems are susceptible to contamination by waste matter including faecal material in the water. It is imperative that this material is removed from the system. The maintenance of good water quality is a pre-requisite to the success of the operation. Negligence in this area will adversely affect animal growth rates and also the economic performance of the system.
Micro-screen drum filters are a popular solution for the removal of this material (Cripps, Simon J. and Bergheim, Asbjørn., 2000). These screens are nominally rated …
Environmental Constraints And Profitability Relationships In Agriculture: A Case Study Of Wheat Farming In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Mk Hasan
Environmental Constraints And Profitability Relationships In Agriculture: A Case Study Of Wheat Farming In Bangladesh, S Rahman, Mk Hasan
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This article attempts to measure the influence of environmental constraints on profitability and resource use in agriculture by utilizing survey data of 293 wheat farmers from three regions of Bangladesh. Analysis is based on a profit function, where the selected variables representing environmental constraints were incorporated as additional fixed factors. Results revealed that environmental constraints have a significant influence on both profitability and farmers' resource allocation decisions. Output supply and input demands were significantly affected by land suitability and other environmental constraints (i.e. a combination of poor soil fertility, pest and weed infestation and weather variation). The policy implications include …
