Live 3d Production Of Sporting Events, The Future Of Sports Broadcasting, Scott A. Changnon

Research Papers

The broadcasting of live sporting events in America has embarked into a new frontier of three-dimensional (3D) high-definition (HD) broadcasting. In this research paper, I examine what the future holds for live 3D broadcasts of sports in America. I believe that there is a future of sports in 3D. In this paper I go over the history of both sports media and 3D technology as well as gather opinions from professionals in 3D manufacturing, 3D sports media, 3D advertisers, and 3D retail. 3D is here and as time goes on, more and more 3DTV’s will be in American homes.

Electronic And Paper-Based Teaching Portfolios: Student Perceptions And Recommendations, Steven B. Smith, Christopher M. Cook, Shawn A. Faulkner, Michele G. Peers Nov 2011

Electronic And Paper-Based Teaching Portfolios: Student Perceptions And Recommendations, Steven B. Smith, Christopher M. Cook, Shawn A. Faulkner, Michele G. Peers

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

This paper documents a yearlong pilot study, conducted by teacher education faculty, to evaluate methods for creating, sustaining, and assessing teaching portfolios. Selected issues with paper-based and software-based programs are compared. Key design, instructional, and procedural problems that arose during this study are discussed as well. The findings of this study support the need for a flexible electronic portfolio system in which students play a key role in the design, development, and content of their portfolios as well as the need for a clearly articulated academic purpose and requirements for the teaching portfolio with implications for students in all disciplines.

Instructional Design In Online Learning: Components Of Quality, Lenore J. Kinne, Shannon M. Eastep Nov 2011

Instructional Design In Online Learning: Components Of Quality, Lenore J. Kinne, Shannon M. Eastep

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Although there are obvious differences between online instruction and face-to-face instruction, this paper focuses on their similarities. One of the challenges when designing a course that has been successfully taught in a face-to-face format is deciding what will stay the same versus what will be changed. How does one replace what happens in class with meaningful online content? In what ways can content be presented aside from reading text on one's computer screen? With these questions in mind, an instructor began collaborating with an instructional designer to develop her first online course, a graduate level course in pupil assessment and …

Incorporating Electronic Books Into A Graduate Reading Methods Class: Improving The Comprehension Of Students In Grades K-12, Chhanda Islam Dr. Nov 2011

Incorporating Electronic Books Into A Graduate Reading Methods Class: Improving The Comprehension Of Students In Grades K-12, Chhanda Islam Dr.

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this paper was to explore how various features of electronic books captured students’ attention and built their confidence and knowledge base, and to what extent, if any, reading electronic books supported critical thinking skills and understanding of the text of students in grades K-12; the experienced teachers were enrolled in a summer reading/writing literacy program, offered by a mid-western university. The graduate reading methods course consisted of a tutoring session utilizing electronic books to improve the comprehension of students in grades K-12. The experienced teachers implemented electronic books to provide a context that helped their students to …

Podcasting From Powerpoint Made Easy For Faculty, William J. Attenweiler, Gregory A. Bryant, Michael Lively, Alex Greene Nov 2011

Podcasting From Powerpoint Made Easy For Faculty, William J. Attenweiler, Gregory A. Bryant, Michael Lively, Alex Greene

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

Student demand, institutional support, and evidence of quality learning through web-based instruction should encourage faculty to experiment with alternative methods of delivering instruction. The authors developed a procedure to produce and deliver classroom lecture material by narrating PowerPoint presentations and converting to podcasts. This procedure requires little to no technical support, even for the technologically impaired, and costs less than $100 in equipment and software combined. It is an example of the many alternative distance education options available to educators today.

The Anchor, Volume 125.08: November 2, 2011, Hope College

The Anchor: 2011

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Enhancing Student Learning With Case-Based Teaching And Audience Response Systems In An Interdisciplinary Food Science Course, Davide Giacalone Nov 2011

Enhancing Student Learning With Case-Based Teaching And Audience Response Systems In An Interdisciplinary Food Science Course, Davide Giacalone

Higher Learning Research Communications

A growing body of research in higher education suggests that teachers should move away from traditional lecturing towards more active and student-focus education approaches. Several classroom techniques are available to engage students and achieve more effective teaching and better learning experiences. The purpose of this paper is to share an example of how two of them – case-based teaching, and the use of response technologies – were implemented into a graduate-level food science course. The paper focuses in particular on teaching sensory science and sensometrics, including several concrete examples used during the course, and discussing in each case some of …

Cervical Remodeling/Ripening At Term And Preterm Delivery: The Same Mechanism Initiated By Different Mediators And Different Effector Cells, Juan M. Gonzalez, Zhong Dong, Roberto Romero, Guillermina Girardi Nov 2011

Cervical Remodeling/Ripening At Term And Preterm Delivery: The Same Mechanism Initiated By Different Mediators And Different Effector Cells, Juan M. Gonzalez, Zhong Dong, Roberto Romero, Guillermina Girardi

Publications and Research

Background Premature cervical remodeling/ripening is believed to contribute to preterm delivery (PTD), the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Despite considerable research, the causes of term and PTD remain unclear, and there is no effective treatment for PTD. We previously demonstrated that complement activation plays a causative role in cervical remodeling that leads to PTD in mice. Methodology/Principal Findings Here we found that complement activation is not required for the physiological process that leads to term delivery in mice. Neither increased C3 cervical deposition nor increased C3a and C5a serum levels were observed at term. In addition, macrophages infiltration …

Migration And Invasion Of Brain Tumors, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Dudu, Maribel Vazquez Nov 2011

Migration And Invasion Of Brain Tumors, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Dudu, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

Recent advances in molecular biology have led to new insights in the development, growth and infiltrative behaviors of primary brain tumors (Demuth and Berens, 2004; Huse and Holland, 2010; Johnson et al., 2009; Kanu et al., 2009). These tumors are derived from various brain cell lineages and have been historically classified on the basis of morphological and, more recently, immunohistochemical features with less emphasis on their underlying molecular pathogenesis (Huse and Holland, 2010). The detailed molecular characterization of brain tumors has laid the groundwork for augmentation of standard treatment with patient-specific designed targeted therapies (Johnson et al., 2009; Kanu et …
