A Concise Synthesis Of Β-Sitosterol And Other Phytosterols, Jiliang Hang, Patrick Dussault Dec 2010

A Concise Synthesis Of Β-Sitosterol And Other Phytosterols, Jiliang Hang, Patrick Dussault

Patrick Dussault Publications

A convenient synthesis of sidechain-modified phytosterols is achieved via a temporary masking of the stigmasterol 5,6-alkene as an epoxide. Following performance of the desired modification, the alkene is regenerated through a mild deoxygenation. The approach is applied to the syntheses of β-sitosterol and campesterol acetate, and suggests a facile route to the (Z)-isomers of Δ22–23 phytosterols.

Mainstreaming Privacy Torts, Danielle K. Citron Dec 2010

Mainstreaming Privacy Torts, Danielle K. Citron

Faculty Scholarship

In 1890, Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis proposed a privacy tort and seventy years later, William Prosser conceived it as four wrongs. In both eras, privacy invasions primarily caused psychic and reputational wounds of a particular sort. Courts insisted upon significant proof due to those injuries’ alleged ethereal nature. Digital networks alter this calculus by exacerbating the injuries inflicted. Because humiliating personal information posted online has no expiration date, neither does individual suffering. Leaking databases of personal information and postings that encourage assaults invade privacy in ways that exact significant financial and physical harm. This dispels concerns that plaintiffs might …

Presidential Succession: The Art Of The Possible, James E. Fleming Dec 2010

Presidential Succession: The Art Of The Possible, James E. Fleming

Faculty Scholarship

I am deeply honored that John D. Feerick invited me to come back to Fordham University School of Law and appear in this splendid conference. Yet I hasten to say that, when it comes to presidential succession, John Feerick and Joel K. Goldstein are tough acts to follow. Indeed, in an otherwise wonderfully organized conference, the line of succession here is flawed. I suppose I should declare myself unqualified to follow these experts on presidential succession! I shall bring the perspective of the constitutional theory generalist to bear on the questions framed for our panel.

A System For Measuring Radiation Induced Chemical Products In Atmospheric Gases Using Optical Detection Methods, Tyler Webster Reese Dec 2010

A System For Measuring Radiation Induced Chemical Products In Atmospheric Gases Using Optical Detection Methods, Tyler Webster Reese

Master's Theses

This research is a part of an effort to characterize the chemical products generated by radiation interacting with atmosphere. One method of detecting ionizing radiation is to monitor the radiation induced products in the atmosphere around the source. This project explored the potential for using Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy to evaluate the presence of chemical products generated by the air-radiation interaction near an alpha radiation source. In particular, measurements of ozone concentration within a controlled atmosphere chamber as affected by radiation exposure were obtained.

The first portion of this thesis provides brief reviews of ionizing radiation and ozone formation as well …

Renewable Source Thermoplastics, Travis Palmer Ball Dec 2010

Renewable Source Thermoplastics, Travis Palmer Ball

Master's Theses

This thesis is concerned with developing renewable resource thermoplastic materials to replace existing non-renewable or possibly hazardous industry standard products.

Cerenol TPU Incorporation

Dupont has recently developed a renewable source Polyol (Cerenol) which is derived from 1,3 propane diol processed from corn feeds. This material, which is a three carbon ether repeat unit, is in the pre-commercial stage and is meant to directly compete with petroleum based polyols as a drop-in replacement in thermoplastic polyurethanes. A model kinetic study was performed to compare relative reactivity of the Cerenol polyol to standard four carbon repeat unit petroleum-based polyol ether (PTMEG). A …

Automatic Execution Path Finding Tool, Fan Yang Dec 2010

Automatic Execution Path Finding Tool, Fan Yang

Master's Projects

Today, there are many hackers trying to break software using reverse engineering tech- niques. To better protect software, we need to understand reverse engineering methods. This project presents a tool that automatically analyzes executable code in a manner simi- lar to the way an attack might analyze code.

Using reverse engineering techniques, executables can be disassembled to yield an as- sembly code representation of the program. Assembly code is much more human reada- ble than binary code. With assembly code, an attacker can attempt to modify the program to do something other than what was intended by the developer.

Computational Mirna Target Prediction In Animals, Leyan Tang Dec 2010

Computational Mirna Target Prediction In Animals, Leyan Tang

Master's Projects

miRNAs are a class of small RNA molecules about 22 nucleotides long that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. The discovery of the second miRNA 10 years ago was as much a surprise in its own way as the very structure of DNA discovered a half century earlier[1]. How could these small molecules regulate so many genes? During the past decade the complex cascade of regulation has been investigated and reported in detail[2]. The regions of the genome called untranslated regions, or UTRs, proved true to their name: they were indeed untranslated, but certainly not unimportant: they act as …

Intrusion Detection And Prevention System: Sql-Injection Attacks, Varian Luong Dec 2010

Intrusion Detection And Prevention System: Sql-Injection Attacks, Varian Luong

Master's Projects

Personally identifiable information (PII) is information regarding things such as bank accounts, retirement or stock investment accounts, credit card accounts, medical records, or insurance claims. There is a need to protect the PII in databases that are connected to the ubiquitous, global network that is the Internet. If there is any vulnerability in the protection in a system that holds PII, then it presents an opportunity for an unauthorized person to access this PII. One of the techniques available to would- be information thieves is SQL injection (SQL-I). In this project, a system is developed to analyze the values submitted …

An Online Versions Of Hyperlinked-Induced Topics Search (Hits) Algorithm, Amith Kollam Chandranna Dec 2010

An Online Versions Of Hyperlinked-Induced Topics Search (Hits) Algorithm, Amith Kollam Chandranna

Master's Projects

Generally, search engines perform the ranking of web pages in an offline mode, which is after the web pages have been retrieved and stored in the database. The existing HITS algorithm (Kleinberg, 1996) operates in an offline mode to perform page rank calculation. In this project, we have implemented an online mode of page ranking for this algorithm. This will improve the overall performance of the Search Engine. This report describes the approach used to implement and test this algorithm. Comparison results performed against other existing search engines are also presented in this report. This is helpful in describing the …

Japanese Kanji Suggestion Tool, Sujata Dongre Dec 2010

Analysis Of False Cache Line Sharing Effects On Multicore Cpus, Suntorn Sae-Eung Dec 2010

Analysis Of False Cache Line Sharing Effects On Multicore Cpus, Suntorn Sae-Eung

Master's Projects

False sharing (FS) is a well-known problem occurring in multiprocessor systems. It results in performance degradation on multi-threaded programs running on multiprocessor environments.

With the evolution of processor architecture over time, the multicore processor is a recent direction used by hardware designers to increase performance while avoiding heat and power walls. To fully exploit the processing power from these multicore hardware architectures, the software programmer needs to build applications using parallel programming concepts, which are based upon multi-threaded programming principles.

Since the architecture of a multicore processor is very similar to a multiprocessor system, the presence of the false sharing …

Extending Owl With Finite Automata Constraints, Jignesh Borisa Dec 2010

Extending Owl With Finite Automata Constraints, Jignesh Borisa

Master's Projects

The Web Ontology Language (OWL) is a markup language for sharing and publishing data using ontologies on the Internet. It belongs to a family of knowledge representation languages for writing ontologies. Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a declarative programming approach to knowledge representation. It is oriented towards difficult search problems. In this project, we developed an extension to OWL add support for collection class constraints. These constraints come in the form of membership checks for sets where these set are computed by finite automata. We developed an inference engine for the resulting language. This engine extends the Java-based Pellet library …

The Cd-Te Phase Diagram, Robert F. Brebrick Dec 2010

The Cd-Te Phase Diagram, Robert F. Brebrick

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The properties of the liquid phase in the Cd–Te system are fit using thermodynamic properties of CdTe(c) recently optimized by the author. These include a high temperature heat capacity significantly lower than commonly used such that the enthalpy of formation of CdTe(c) at its melting point is about 10 kJ/mol less negative than previously thought. An associated solution model with Cd, CdTe, and Te species is used. Seven adjustable parameters are sufficient to quantitatively fit the liquidus and partial pressures of Te2 and Cd. Additional partial pressures for Te rich CdTe(c) near its melting point are extracted from an …

Publications and Research

Background The increasing resistance of Plasmodium, the malaria parasites, to multiple commonly used drugs has underscored the urgent need to develop effective antimalarial drugs and vaccines. The new direction of genomics-driven target discovery has become possible with the completion of parasite genome sequencing, which can lead us to a better understanding of how the parasites develop the genetic variability that is associated with their response to environmental challenges and other adaptive phenotypes. Results We present the results of a comprehensive analysis of the genomes of six Plasmodium species, including two species that infect humans, one that infects monkeys, and three …

The Effects Of Childbearing Patterns On The Timing Of Retirement, Hsiao-Yin Chung Dec 2010

The Effects Of Childbearing Patterns On The Timing Of Retirement, Hsiao-Yin Chung

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The effects of childbearing patterns on the timing of men's and women's retirement were examined. The data for this study come from the Health and Retirement Study, waves 1-7: 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004. A proportional hazard model (Cox regression) was chosen for this study. Two measures of retirement were considered: labor force exit and self-defined retirement. The results indicated that men with dependent children are more likely to postpone the timing of labor force exit and their self-definition as retired. At the same time, the study indicated that the presence (or absence) and timing of early …

Worker Cooperatives And Revolution: History And Possibilities In The United States, Christopher Wright Dec 2010

Worker Cooperatives And Revolution: History And Possibilities In The United States, Christopher Wright

Graduate Masters Theses

Worker cooperatives have a long and tortured history, but recently they have been advancing globally on a more stable foundation than before. In this essay I provide a theoretical context for the current growth of cooperatives, drawing on Marxist theory to illuminate their potential. I also consider the sociology and economics of worker cooperatives, in addition to expounding and evaluating their history in the United States.

A case-study of a cooperative printing press in Jamaica Plain gives a more intimate portrayal of worker co-ops, and hopefully provides lessons for future cooperators. I interpret society as on the cusp of a …
