Norman Morrison Isham: Newport Restoration Foreshadows Modern Preservation, Alyssa Lozupone
Norman Morrison Isham: Newport Restoration Foreshadows Modern Preservation, Alyssa Lozupone
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Norman Morrison Isham was an authority on Newport’s Colonial architecture and was hired to guide local restoration projects in Newport, Rhode Island. These projects, ranging in date from 1914 to 1931, included the Redwood Library, the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, The Colony House, and the Brick Market. Isham’s work is representative of an early period of preservation, and as such, Isham worked prior modern day historic preservation standards and guidelines. An analysis of Isham’s restoration work in Newport provides insight into the elements that compose his preservation theory and how his theory, as carried out with Colonial era structures in Newport, foreshadows …
Enhancing Out-Of-Season Production Of Tomatoes And Lettuce Using High Tunnels, Britney L. Hunter
Enhancing Out-Of-Season Production Of Tomatoes And Lettuce Using High Tunnels, Britney L. Hunter
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The growing season for vegetable crops is limited by freezing temperatures in arid high elevation climates such as northern Utah. Logan, Utah (41.73 N, 111.83 W, 1382 m elevation) has a short, variable growing season with an average frost-free period of 135 days. Extending the growing season provides growers with an opportunity to extend revenue into a normally unproductive period and benefit from out-of-season price premiums. High tunnels have been used to effectively extend the growing season for numerous crops by providing cold temperature protection. However, limited high tunnel research has been performed in arid high elevation regions that experience …

Context Versus Rote Learning In The Martial Arts, Pearson F. Klein
Context Versus Rote Learning In The Martial Arts, Pearson F. Klein
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Research has shown that when learning martial arts katas, adults retained the information better “when the katas were taught with the context method than when the katas were taught with the no context method.” (Tovar, M.) It is imperative more experimentation be performed in this area because the findings do not relate to the population of children. Children between ages seven and twelve were instructed in two original katas utilizing two methods of instruction. First the katas with context were taught and then the other taught was purely based on rote completion of the sequential movements. Every subject was tested …
The Conservative Conversation, Heather Hall
The Conservative Conversation, Heather Hall
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The conservative movement is defined by its ideology as well as its rhetoric. Richard Weaver’s conversion to the Right offers an opportunity to define conservatism and conservative rhetoric through his hierarchy of argumentation, and his examination of Plato’s Phaedrus allows an examination of the speaker’s nature and the nature of rhetoric. Glenn Beck, one of today’s most controversial conservative representatives, also deserves examination for his ideology and rhetoric. Both Richard Weaver and Glenn Beck bear scrutiny as influential members of the conservative movement and the role their rhetoric has in the conservative conversation today.
False Positive Rates In The Neuropsychological Assessment Of Neurologically Intact Bilingual Hispanic American Adults, Cassandra Dayanira Gonzalez
False Positive Rates In The Neuropsychological Assessment Of Neurologically Intact Bilingual Hispanic American Adults, Cassandra Dayanira Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Hispanic Americans perform more poorly than White Americans on neuropsychological tests, leading to a higher misclassification rate of brain injury (false positives) among Hispanics when using the 50th percentile of published norms as the estimate of preexisting neuropsychological skill. This study aimed to determine if using an individual comparison standard to estimate preexisting skill levels would reduce the number of false positives in a sample of 20 bilingual Hispanic American adults. Two individual comparison standards were used: (a) WMLS-R Picture Vocabulary scores, and (b) WMLS-R Picture Vocabulary scores and WAIS-III Matrix Reasoning scores combined. Both individual comparison standards were found …
Predicting College Student Classroom Performance With A Simple Metacomprehension Scale, Amber Lee Klein
Predicting College Student Classroom Performance With A Simple Metacomprehension Scale, Amber Lee Klein
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The present study investigated the relationship between college student metacomprehension and the error of predicted classroom performance. College student metacomprehension was evaluated using the Metacomprehension Scale (MCS) designed by Moore, Zabrucky, and Commander (1997a). Prior to an examination administered by a course instructor, covering course content, students predicted the percentage score he/she expected to achieve. The predicted score was subtracted from the obtained score generating an error score. It was hypothesized that error of predicted classroom performance is a function of student metacomprehension, as measured by the MCS. Results indicate the MCS was not a reliable indicator of student predicted …

Attitudinal Measures Of College Students' Punitiveness Toward Sex Offenders, Antonio Zamorano
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The following experiment investigates punitiveness toward sex offenders using a sample of one hundred sixty students from the University of Texas-Pan American student population recruited from undergraduate introductory psychology courses and compensated with extra course credit. Punitiveness toward sex offenders was measured with six-point bipolar Likert scales using two attitudinal research methodologies: a randomly assigned between group experiment using a manipulated hypothetical crime scenario, and a survey using a shortened version of the Community Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders Scale (CATSOS). A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparison tests of attitudinal responses to the hypothetical crime scenario determined that …
Analysis Of Nitrogen Loading Reductions For Wastewater Treatment Facilities And Non-Point Sources In The Great Bay Estuary Watershed, Philip Trowbridge, Thomas S. Burack, Michael J. Walls, Harry T. Stewart
Analysis Of Nitrogen Loading Reductions For Wastewater Treatment Facilities And Non-Point Sources In The Great Bay Estuary Watershed, Philip Trowbridge, Thomas S. Burack, Michael J. Walls, Harry T. Stewart
PREP Reports & Publications
In 2009, the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) published a proposal for numeric nutrient criteria for the Great Bay Estuary. The report found that total nitrogen concentrations in most of the estuary needed to be less than 0.3 mg N/L to prevent loss of eelgrass habitat and less than 0.45 mg N/L to prevent occurrences of low dissolved oxygen. Based on these criteria and an analysis of a compilation of data from at least seven different sources, DES concluded that 11 of the 18 subestuaries in the Great Bay Estuary were impaired for nitrogen. Under the Clean Water …
Topical Summarization Of Web Videos By Visual-Text Time-Dependent Alignment, Song Tan, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo
Topical Summarization Of Web Videos By Visual-Text Time-Dependent Alignment, Song Tan, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Search engines are used to return a long list of hundreds or even thousands of videos in response to a query topic. Efficient navigation of videos becomes difficult and users often need to painstakingly explore the search list for a gist of the search result. This paper addresses the challenge of topical summarization by providing a timeline-based visualization of videos through matching of heterogeneous sources. To overcome the so called sparse-text problem of web videos, auxiliary information from Google context is exploited. Google Trends is used to predict the milestone events of a topic. Meanwhile, the typical scenes of web …

Optimized Algorithms For Predictive Range And Knn Queries On Moving Objects, Rui Zhang, H.V. Jagadish, Bing Tian Dai, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There have been many studies on management of moving objects recently. Most of them try to optimize the performance of predictive window queries. However, not much attention is paid to two other important query types: the predictive range query and the predictive k nearest neighbor query. In this article, we focus on these two types of queries. The novelty of our work mainly lies in the introduction of the Transformed Minkowski Sum, which can be used to determine whether a moving bounding rectangle intersects a moving circular query region. This enables us to use the traditional tree traversal algorithms to …
Chosen-Ciphertext Secure Bidirectional Proxy Re-Encryption Schemes Without Pairings, Jian Weng, Huijie, Robert Deng, Shengli Liu, Kefei Chen
Chosen-Ciphertext Secure Bidirectional Proxy Re-Encryption Schemes Without Pairings, Jian Weng, Huijie, Robert Deng, Shengli Liu, Kefei Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Proxy re-encryption realizes delegation of decryption rights, enabling a proxy holding a re-encryption key to convert a ciphertext originally intended for Alice into an encryption of the same message for Bob. Proxy re-encryption is a very useful primitive, having many applications in distributed file systems, outsourced filtering of encrypted spam, access control over network storage, and so on. Lately, Weng et al. proposed the first unidirectional proxy re-encryption scheme without using bilinear pairs. However, Weng et al.'s construction does not possess collusion resilience, in the sense that a coalition of the proxy and the delegatee can recover the delegator's private …
Revisiting Address Space Randomization, Zhi Wang, Renquan Cheng, Debin Gao
Revisiting Address Space Randomization, Zhi Wang, Renquan Cheng, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Address space randomization is believed to be a strong defense against memory error exploits. Many code and data objects in a potentially vulnerable program and the system could be randomized, including those on the stack and heap, base address of code, order of functions, PLT, GOT, etc. Randomizing these code and data objects is believed to be effective in obfuscating the addresses in memory to obscure locations of code and data objects. However, attacking techniques have advanced since the introduction of address space randomization. In particular, return-oriented programming has made attacks without injected code much more powerful than what they …
Protecting And Restraining The Third Party In Rfid-Enabled 3pl Supply Chains, Shaoying Cai, Chunhua Su, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng
Protecting And Restraining The Third Party In Rfid-Enabled 3pl Supply Chains, Shaoying Cai, Chunhua Su, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
“Symmetric secret”-based RFID systems are widely adopted in supply chains. In such RFID systems, a reader’s ability to identify a RFID tag relies on the possession of the tag’s secret which is usually only known by its owner. If a “symmetric secret”-based RFID system is deployed in third party logistics (3PL) supply chains, all the three parties (the sender of the goods, the receiver of the goods and the 3PL provider) should have a copy of those tags’ secrets to access the tags. In case the three parties in 3PL supply chain are not all honest, sharing the secrets among …
Evaluation Of Protein Backbone Alphabets : Using Predicted Local Structure For Fold Recognition, Kyong Jin Shim
Evaluation Of Protein Backbone Alphabets : Using Predicted Local Structure For Fold Recognition, Kyong Jin Shim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Optimally combining available information is one of the key challenges in knowledge-driven prediction techniques. In this study, we evaluate six Phi and Psi-based backbone alphabets. We show that the addition of predicted backbone conformations to SVM classifiers can improve fold recognition. Our experimental results show that the inclusion of predicted backbone conformations in our feature representation leads to higher overall accuracy compared to when using amino acid residues alone.
Exploiting Intensity Inhomogeneity To Extract Textured Objects From Natural Scenes, Jundi Ding, Jialie Shen, Hwee Hwa Pang, Songcan Chen, Jingyu Yang
Exploiting Intensity Inhomogeneity To Extract Textured Objects From Natural Scenes, Jundi Ding, Jialie Shen, Hwee Hwa Pang, Songcan Chen, Jingyu Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Extracting textured objects from natural scenes is a challenging task in computer vision. The main difficulties arise from the intrinsic randomness of natural textures and the high-semblance between the objects and the background. In this paper, we approach the extraction problem with a seeded region-growing framework that purely exploits the statistical properties of intensity inhomogeneity. The pixels in the interior of potential textured regions are first found as texture seeds in an unsupervised manner. The labels of the texture seeds are then propagated through their respective inhomogeneous neighborhoods, to eventually cover the different texture regions in the image. Extensive experiments …

Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water And Surface Sediments Of Wilgreen Lake, Madison County, Kentucky, Chad Von Gruenigen, Walter S. Borowski
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Heavy metal pollution remains problematic in natural waters, particularly for localities near plausible anthropogenic sources. We assayed the level of heavy metals in surface waters and within surface sediments of Wilgreen Lake, whose watershed drains industrial, urban, agricultural, and residential areas near Richmond, Kentucky. Water samples were treated according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocols and digested with trace-metal-grade nitric and hydrochloric acids. Sediment samples were collected with a grab sampler and digested using established EPA procedures with hydrogen peroxide and trace-metal-grade nitric acid. Both water samples and sediment samples were sent to Activation Laboratories for analysis, and were measured …

A temperature compensation scheme of detecting automobile exhaust gas based on fuzzy logic inference is presented in this paper. The principles of the infrared automobile exhaust gas analyzer and the influence of the environmental temperature on analyzer are discussed. A fuzzy inference system is designed to improve the measurement accuracy of the measurement equipment by reducing the measurement errors caused by environmental temperature. The case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The fuzzy compensation scheme is promising as demonstrated by the simulation results in this paper.

Understanding Gender Differences In Media Perceptions: A Comparison Of 2d Versus 3d Media, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, David Dewester, Brenda Eschenbrenner
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We examine gender differences in 2D versus 3D media perceptions. Using the Hunter-Gatherer Theory of Spatial Gender Differences and Jung’s Theory of Psychological Types, we hypothesize differences in men’s and women’s perceptions of skill, challenge, telepresence, and satisfaction with online experiences in 2D versus 3D media interaction. The findings suggest that even though women perceive lower skill levels and greater challenges in using 2D and 3D media than men, women’s sense of telepresence is higher than men in both 2D and 3D media. Women are also more satisfied with their interaction in 2D and 3D media than men.
