Functional Effects Of Cyp1a2, Nat1, And Nat2 Genetic Variants In Nucleotide Excision Repair-Deficient Human Fibroblasts : Implications For Toxicological Risk From Environmental Arylamines., Carmine Simone Leggett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arylamine N-acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1) and 2 (NAT2) catalyze the detoxification and/or activation of aromatic and heterocyclic amine carcinogens by two pathways. This metabolism reaction can lead to the detoxification by Nacetylation, or bioactivation by a-acetylation often preceded by CYP450 hydroxylation. Human NAT2 polymorphisms are characterized by rapid, intermediate, and slow acetylator phenotypes, thus resulting in differences in the rate of arylamine metabolism and consequently cancer risk. We have constructed nucleotide excision repair-deficient human cell model expressing human CYP1A2 and human NAT1and NAT2 in order to investigate carcinogen metabolism and cancer susceptibility in human cells. In this study we introduce the …

Reverse Transfer Students : Characteristics, Motivations, And Implications., Kathryn Elizabeth Lowrey 1957-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reverse transfer literature contains studies investigating the demographic characteristics of postsecondary students that attended a community college after attending a four-year institution, and their proportion in the community college student population. A few researchers have investigated reverse transfer student motives for enrolling in the two-year college. However, the literature is lacking studies exploring the intentions of reverse transfer students to complete their programs of study at the community college, and how these intentions impact retention and completion measures of effectiveness at the community college. The purpose of this study was to examine reverse transfer student demographic characteristics, education background, …

Unitive/Mystical Experiences And Life Changes, Susan F. Schneeberger Dec 2010

Unitive/Mystical Experiences And Life Changes, Susan F. Schneeberger

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore life changes in beliefs, philosophy, and behavior in individuals who reported having a unitive/mystical experience (U/ME). A U/ME is a generally spontaneously occurring state of consciousness characterized by a sense of unity or "oneness" that transcends sensory or cognitive apprehension (Stace, 1960). There is often an ineffable certainty that an ultimate truth has been perceived and can be applied to one's life. The experience may be accompanied or followed by feelings of joy and bliss. One hundred sixty adults from a broad range of demographic characteristics participated in a one-time webbased survey. …

The Culture Care Meaning Of Comfort For Ethnically Diverse Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students In The Educational Setting, Lynne K. Zajac Dec 2010

The Culture Care Meaning Of Comfort For Ethnically Diverse Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students In The Educational Setting, Lynne K. Zajac

Dissertations

The nursing profession is calling for enhanced diversity within the ranks of registered nurses to meet the health care needs of an increasingly diverse society. Nursing education is faced with the challenge of retaining ethnically diverse nursing students. Students who are ethnically diverse face unique challenges in addition to the universal stressors of nursing school. The experience of comfort as theorized by Kolcaba may provide ease, relief, and transcendence of the discomfort experienced by diverse nursing students. This ethnonursing research study utilizing Leininger's Culture Care Theory is an in-depth examination of the culture care meaning of comfort for ethnically diverse …

The Issue Of Intent In The Genocide Convention And Its Effect On The Prevention And Punishment Of The Crime Of Genocide: Toward A Knowledge-Based Approach, Katherine Goldsmith Dec 2010

The Issue Of Intent In The Genocide Convention And Its Effect On The Prevention And Punishment Of The Crime Of Genocide: Toward A Knowledge-Based Approach, Katherine Goldsmith

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Since the Genocide Convention was created in 1948, its effectiveness has been hindered by debates on what the definition actually means. It has been widely accepted that the meaning of ‘‘intent,’’ within the Genocide Convention, refers to specific or special intent, dolus specialis. However, as more trials have taken place, creating more understanding of the crime of genocide, the linking of dolus specialis with the intent definition, that was so easily accepted at the first genocide trial (Akayesu at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda [ICTR]), has been repeatedly put into question. The new approach being put forward as the …

Memory Controversies In Post-Genocide Rwanda: Implications For Peacebuilding, Elisabeth King Dec 2010

Memory Controversies In Post-Genocide Rwanda: Implications For Peacebuilding, Elisabeth King

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Intrastate wars and genocides result in devastating losses and leave deep and lasting scars on those who survive. Making space for civilians to share their experiences of violence and to have them publicly acknowledged—especially by their own governments—can be important parts of (re)knitting the social fabric. This article focuses on the experiences of ordinary Rwandans during and after their country’s civil war and genocide. It is centered on excerpts from a series of field interviews and highlights Rwandans’ memories in their own words. This article contrasts this cross-section of civilian narratives with the official memories of violence that the national …

A Study On Masquerade Detection, Lin Huang Dec 2010

A Study On Masquerade Detection, Lin Huang

Master's Projects

In modern computer systems, usernames and passwords have been by far the most common forms of authentication. A security system relying only on password protection is defenseless when the passwords of legitimate users are compromised. A masquerader can impersonate a legitimate user by using a compromised password.

An intrusion detection system (IDS) can provide an additional level of protection for a security system by inspecting user behavior. In terms of detection techniques, there are two types of IDSs: signature-based detection and anomaly-based detection. An anomaly-based intrusion detection technique consists of two steps: 1) creating a normal behavior model for legitimate …

Our objectives for the Oregon coastal population in 2010 were to: 1) estimate the size of the adult Snowy Plover population, 2) locate plover nests, 3) continue selective use of mini-exclosures (MEs) to protect nests …

Characterizing Dietary Intake And Physical Activity Affecting Weight Gain In Kidney Transplant Recipients, Connie Klopfenstein Cupples Dec 2010

Characterizing Dietary Intake And Physical Activity Affecting Weight Gain In Kidney Transplant Recipients, Connie Klopfenstein Cupples

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Weight gain following kidney transplant is a significant problem with 50 to 90% of kidney transplant recipients gaining weight. Potential factors leading to weight gain following kidney transplantation have been thought to include a change in lifestyle such asdietary intake and physical activity, along with the use of immunosuppressant medications to preserve the newly implanted organ. Other influences affecting weight gain include genetic determinates such as age, gender and race. There is little data to confirm which of these factors may indeed lead to weight gain and obesity. The purpose of this study was to examine dietary intake and physical …

D2r Dopamine Receptor Mediates Changes In Dual Specificity Phosphatase Expression In A Small Cell Lung Cancer Cell Line, Scott Lemar Lattimer

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Bromocriptine, a D2 dopamine receptor (D2R) agonist, is used clinically as a treatment for pituitary tumors of a lactotroph origin. Many questions remain unanswered about the mechanism of this effect. The antiproliferative effect has not been demonstrated in DMS 53 cell line, a Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). In this thesis, we have shown that treatment with NPA (N‑propylnorapomorphine), a dopamine receptor agonist inhibits ERK phosphorylation and proliferation in DMS 53 cells. NPA treatment causes significant increases in DUSP‑1 (MKP‑1), DUSP‑4 (MKP‑2) and DUSP5 mRNA. NPA treatment also correlates with increases in DUSP5 (hVHR3) protein visualized using Western Blot. These …

La Familia Drug Cartel: Implications For U.S.-Mexican Security, George W. Grayson Dr. Dec 2010

La Familia Drug Cartel: Implications For U.S.-Mexican Security, George W. Grayson Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

La Familia Michoacana burst onto the national stage on September 6, 2006, when ruffians crashed into the seedy Sol y Sombra nightclub in Uruapan, Michoacán, and fired shots into the air. They screamed at the revelers to lie down, ripped open a plastic bag, and lobbed five human heads onto the beer-stained black and white dance floor. The day before these macabre pyrotechnics, the killers seized their prey from a mechanic’s shop and hacked off their heads with bowie knives while the men writhed in pain. “You don’t do something like that unless you want to send a big message,” …

Russia's Prospects In Asia, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Dec 2010

Russia's Prospects In Asia, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

These three chapters originated in an SSI conference in January 2010 and go to the heart of a question of vital significance for both Asia and Russia, namely what are Russia’s prospects in Asia. The three chapters outline the challenges Russia faces in Asia, the nature of the dynamic and complex Asian security environment, and the extent to which Russia is or is not meeting those challenges. These chapters represent both Russian and U.S. views and clearly do not agree in their conclusions or analyses. For this reason, they are all the more interesting. These chapters should provoke debate, reflection, …

Enacting An Assets Pedagogy To Develop Youth Assets: Teaching K-12 Urban Youth In An After-School Visual Arts Program Using Participatory Action Research, Maureen Mccarthy

Art Education Theses

Abstract

After my first years of teaching art within a school that perpetuated a deficit paradigm, I was one of two graduate students who taught with two professors in an alternative site at a community center with urban youth from ages 7-17 years. We enacted an assets model that sought to strengthen learners' artistic thinking. Using qualitative participatory action research, I began a study of the teaching practices of Ruth, one of the art educators, to find what happens when an assets model that strengthens learner's artistic thinking is infused into the goals of an after-school visual arts program. I …

Social Support And Family Criticism: Potential Moderators Of The Relationship Between Functional Impairment, Illness Burden, And Depression., Joshua Paul Hatfield Dec 2010

Social Support And Family Criticism: Potential Moderators Of The Relationship Between Functional Impairment, Illness Burden, And Depression., Joshua Paul Hatfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social support and family criticism variables were examined as potential moderators of the association between illness burden and depression and between functional impairment and depression in a secondary data analysis. Participants (n=735) were older adults aged 65 and older from internal medicine and family medicine primary care offices. It was hypothesized that both illness burden and functional impairment would be associated with increased depressive symptoms and a diagnosis of depression. In addition, it was hypothesized that higher levels of social support and lower levels of family criticism would moderate this relationship. Both linear and logistic multivariate hierarchical regression analyses were …

The Post-Nuclear Family And The Depoliticization Of Unplanned Pregnancy In Knocked Up, Juno, And Waitress, Kristen Hoerl, Casey Ryan Kelly Dec 2010

The Post-Nuclear Family And The Depoliticization Of Unplanned Pregnancy In Knocked Up, Juno, And Waitress, Kristen Hoerl, Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This essay explores three films from 2007, Knocked Up, Juno, and Waitress, which foreground young women’s unplanned pregnancies. These movies depoliticize women’s reproduction and motherhood through narratives that rearticulate the meaning of choice. Bypassing the subject of abortion, the women’s decisions revolve around their choice of heterosexual partners and investment in romantic relationships. Although they question the viability of the nuclear family for single pregnant women, these films represent new iterations of post-feminism that ultimately restore conservative ideas that valorize pregnancy and motherhood as women’s imperatives. We conclude by addressing how these movies present a distorted and …

Targeted Insertion Of Cysteine By Decoding Uga Codons With Mammalian Selenocysteine Machinery, Xue-Ming Xu, Anton A. Turanov, Bradley A. Carlson, Min-Hyuk Yoo, Robert A. Everley, Renu Nandakumar, Irina Sorokina, Steven P. Gygi, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Cysteine (Cys) is inserted into proteins in response to UGC and UGU codons. Herein, we show that supplementation of mammalian cells with thiophosphate led to targeted insertion of Cys at the UGA codon of thioredoxin reductase 1 (TR1). This Cys was synthesized by selenocysteine (Sec) synthase on tRNA[Ser]Sec and its insertion was dependent on the Sec insertion sequence element in the 3′ UTR of TR1 mRNA. The substrate for this reaction, thiophosphate, was synthesized by selenophosphate synthetase 2 from ATP and sulfide and reacted with phosphoseryl-tRNA[Ser]Sec to generate Cys-tRNA[Ser]Sec. Cys was inserted in vivo at UGA …

Feeling Happier When Paying More: Dysfunctional Counterfactual Thinking In Consumer Affect, Sukki Yoon, Patrick Vargas

Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles

In this research the authors examine whether counterfactual thinking, the process of imagining alternatives to reality, can have a detrimental impact on consumers’ feelings. Five studies examine the dysfunctional role of counterfactual thinking in the presence of Minimum Purchase Requirement conditional message framing (“X% off all purchases if you spend at least $Y”), and its affective consequences. Results show that the presence or absence of the minimum amount restriction (Studies 1A and 1B), success or failure to meet the restriction (Studies 2A and 2B), and perceived closeness (i.e., outcome proximity) to success or failure in meeting the restriction (Study 3), …
