Project: Love Yours, Wei Hsiao Dec 2010

Project: Love Yours, Wei Hsiao

Theses

Project: Love Yours is a graduate thesis project that examined the importance of emotional attachments to product longevity in the context of problems where our material culture is distant and disposable. Through research memory was identified as an influential factor in attachment formation. By incorporating the philosophical concept of imperfection as a design strategy to stimulate the process of memory building, three concept solutions were developed. The design implementation in four product prototypes proves to be successful in encouraging memories to grow within each product. As ownership continues over the years, we can anticipate memories to accumulate and build up …

The Impact Of Mentoring Pre-Service Teachers On The Mentor Teacher, Patti Andrea Dec 2010

The Impact Of Mentoring Pre-Service Teachers On The Mentor Teacher, Patti Andrea

Dissertations

Since the early 1980s, policy makers and educational leaders have pinned high hopes on mentoring as a vehicle for reforming teaching and teacher education (Feiman- Nemser, 1996). A review of literature written throughout the evolution of mentoring illustrated that researchers focused most of their attention on a relatively narrow aspect of mentoring relationships and relatively little attention has been paid to mentor benefits (Ragins & Kram, 2007). This study examined the patterns, similarities, and differences of the mentor teacher’s perspectives of potential mentor benefits of mentoring university pre-service teachers.

A phenomenological study was conducted to explore whether mentors attained leadership …

Paths To Upper Level Positions In Public Relations, Patrick J. Bishop

Dissertations

Preparation for a career in the field of public relations (PR) is based on a set of unique core competencies typically found in liberal arts. Though PR professionals rarely gain business degrees, they acquire knowledge, skills, perspectives, and strategies wellsuited to executive-level positions in business. Additionally, managerial positions in PR offer greater potential for influence than task-oriented roles with limited strategic opportunity.

This study examines the advancement of PR practitioners into upper-level management positions in business. The purpose of this research is to identify factors and behaviors that contribute to, or hinder, PR professional’s attainment of top-management positions. This study …

An Examination Of The Leadership Practices Of Effective Rural Superintendents: A Multiple Case Study, Mark Forner

Dissertations

This research examined the leadership practices of rural superintendents who have led their districts to significant improvement in student academic achievement. The overall research goal was to examine how Waters' and Marzano's six correlates of effective superintendent leadership practice have been applied by school leaders who have successfully pursued academic reform in their rural school districts. A multiple case study approach was used to examine the work practices of seven superintendents leading rural school districts in Michigan where student academic performance was on the rise.

A criterion-based selection methodology was used to identify the superintendent subjects and their districts. A …

High Flow Air Sampling For Field Detection Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Jacolin Ann Murray Dec 2010

High Flow Air Sampling For Field Detection Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Jacolin Ann Murray

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to rapidly detect and identify hazardous analytes in the field has become increasingly important. One of the most important analytical detection methods in the field is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In this work, a hand-portable GC-MS system is described that contains a miniature toroidal ion trap mass analyzer and a low thermal mass GC. The system is self-contained within the dimensions of 47 x 36 x 18 cm and weighs less than 13 kg. Because the instrument has a small footprint, it was used as the detector for an automated near-real-time permeation testing system. In permeation testing, materials …

Discovering A Better Way: The Need For Effective Civil Litigation Reform, John H. Beisner Dec 2010

Discovering A Better Way: The Need For Effective Civil Litigation Reform, John H. Beisner

Duke Law Journal

This Article addresses the myriad problems posed by unfettered discovery in the United States Rather than promoting fairness and efficiency in the American legal system, plaintiffs today often use discovery in an abusive and vexatious manner to coerce defendants into accepting quick settlements Over the past several decades, discovery has expanded in both scope and magnitude such that discovery costs now account for at least half of the total litigation costs in any given case The advent of electronic discovery has only exacerbated the problem, given the sheer number of electronic documents generated in the course of business and the …

Comparison Of H-Alpha And H-Beta Temperature Indices In The Hyades And Coma Star Clusters And Selected H-Beta Standard Stars, Miriam Anne West Dec 2010

Comparison Of H-Alpha And H-Beta Temperature Indices In The Hyades And Coma Star Clusters And Selected H-Beta Standard Stars, Miriam Anne West

Theses and Dissertations

Using the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory's 1.2-m McKellar Telescope, we have obtained spectra on 81 stars from the Hyades Cluster, the Coma Cluster, and selected H-beta standard stars. These spectra cover from 4500 Å to 6900 Å which includes both the H-β and H-α absorption lines. The H-β absorption line has a long history of being used as a temperature index and more recently, calibration of an H-α index has been established for photometric observations. Through spectrophotometric comparison of temperature indices from the H-α and H-β absorption lines we find the expected strong correlation between photometric indices based on the strength …

Improved Worm Simulator And Simulations, Arnold Suvatne Dec 2010

Improved Worm Simulator And Simulations, Arnold Suvatne

Master's Projects

According to the latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR), worms were the second most prevalent information security threat detected in the first half of 2010 – the top threat being Trojans. Given the prevalence and damaging effects of worms, research and development of worm counter strategies are garnering an increased level of attention. However, it is extremely risky to test and observe worm spread behavior on a public network. What is needed is a packet level worm simulator that would allow researchers to develop and test counter strategies against rapidly spreading worms in a controlled and isolated environment. Louisiana State Museum, Abigail Tyler

Arts Administration Master's Reports (1984-2016)

As a marketing intern at Louisiana State Museum, I worked under the supervision of the Director of Marketing and Communications. The department is based out of the Presbytere, but is responsible for the entire Louisiana State Museum system and so my responsibilities spanned many other departments and sites, including Baton Rouge and Patterson. When starting my internship, there was no specific job description, nor any guidelines indicating what my responsibilities were. In fact, the only information I had was from the offer letter received from Arthur Smith: "You'll be working in the marketing communications department under my supervision on a …

Assurance And Frustration : From Ireland And The Netherlands To Jamestown., Keith A. Donahoe Dec 2010

Assurance And Frustration : From Ireland And The Netherlands To Jamestown., Keith A. Donahoe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

English experience gained from colonization attempts in the New World and in Ireland, as well as military expeditions to the European continent and the New World, helped make Jamestown more successful than any previous English colonial venture in the New World up to that time. Jamestown's early leadership successfully applied the collective English experiences from the Netherlands and Ireland to help the Jamestown colony survive. English experiences in Ireland were instrumental in developing the concepts that led to successful English colonization of North America, but English experiences in the Netherlands also played an important role. In the critical first two-and-a-half …
